earless seals are also called 'true seals' because, I suppose, along with the fact that they are more adapted to aquatic life, they probably returned to the seas earlier in history than the eared seals, and they are the archetype of a seal. The ones that can walk on their limbs are 'eared seals' and sea lions are in that group. They are almost evolutionary still near a 'crossroads' between being a land animal and sea creature. The ones that wriggle across the substrate are earless, true seals-
The most common belief is that they became aquatic before the two lineages diverged so they have been in the sea for the same length of time

Sea lions tend to be more aggressive but it depends on the species of sea lion or seal, plus their habitat and/or if they were raised by or around humans.
Seals are also quieter and less social, whereas sea lions are loud and more social.
Elephant seals gather in massive groups though.
@@hunterhq295 Elephant seals are overgrown sea lions (check their ears and locomotion on land), the seal part of their name is a misnomer. The literal translation from several other languages into English is sea elephant.
Infinitely quieter than those obnoxiously loud sea lions!

They don’t have a need. The seals generally leave when the sea lions come. Sea lions come in groups, and they’re loud. Seals will just flop away to avoid them.

How do you tell a fur seal though? This pinniped is not a true seal or sea lion, though it is called a seal and looks more like a sea lion. It's hard to not get them confused with sea lions.
Fur seals can't walk on their back fins, and their fur is much thicker, a sea lion has a very smooth surface.
Seal (true seal or earless seal): phocid
Sea Lion and Fur Seal (eared seal or walking seal): Ottaridae
Walrus: Obenidae.
I always thought seals were sea lions and vice versa. I'm shamed of myself.

I have found that there are seals that are very much like sea lions, they have ears and walk easy, they are "fur seals". How can we differentiate for sure fur seals from sea lions?
Fur seals obviously have thick longer darker coats. Sea lions have thin smooth brighter coat.
If they stood together, fur seals are smaller yet have larger ear flaps and longer hind flippers, they could really "run". Sea lions usually are larger.
It's kinda hard to identy if they were seen individuals honestly, have to look closer to check out the fur.
I myself couldn't identify harbor seal, ringed seal and spotted seal unless they stood together 🤷🏻♀️

+Hanlu Cao There are basically four different types of pinnipeds. Walruses, True Seals, Fur Seals, and Sea Lions. True Seals are also called "earless seals". While Walruses and True Seals do not have ears, Fur Seals and Sea Lions do. Since Leopard Seals do not have ears, they are considered True Seals. They are related to Harbor Seals and Spotted Seals (other members of the True Seal subfamily), only larger, and with larger teeth. Leopard Seals are about the same size as Walruses, and they will prey on smaller seals like Harbor Seals or Fur Seals.
