Air stones in every tank for sure! Not only do they provide air, they also provide flow, and prevent surface biofilms from appearing.
Thanks for this video very informative! I started my 125g and noticed some biofilm developing at the top of my water. This video gave me all the answers I was looking for and even more!

In using a 20 gallon external filter on my 10 gallon tank. I keep the water level 3/4 of an inch below the top of the visible glass. It is providing great water disturbances and creating lots of bubbles deep in the water. For my setup this is all I need.
Callisto 405 There are plenty of ways to get surface agitation and have a healthy tank.
Valuable info. if I ever have a fish aquarium, which I would love to have someday, I will definitely use an air stone.

I love the look of air stones & recently took a tank for free off of someone. My question is, it looks good but it’s quite noisy. Put your ear to the glass and it’s a loud hum. It’s not vibrating on the glass, nor the stones (it’s under some gravel) but where ever I move it too it’s still quite loud & im concerned it’s bothering the fish with constant noise. I’ve brought a smaller air stone and the noise is still the same. Is this normal!??
I actually turn it off at night just to let the fish rest.
Just got a Betta that decided to sit in the corner near the water after day 2. Been there for 2 days and not eating. I figured since it's a new aquarium, it shouldn't be ammonia buildup so soon and this gave me what I was looking for. I'll go by an air stone and pump, then see what happens.
Bettas don't need air stones. Bettas are labyrinth fish thus they get their oxygen from the surface.
There are many benefits of an air stone in all aquariums. Air stones provide so little actual air

Technically, air stone does help with gas exchange AND displacing gasses. This is the reason why we place culture media on either orbital shaker or magnetic stirrer.
However, shaking and stirring forceful will not introduce Oxygen into any solution, if an organism is producing Carbon Dioxide. This is when the said 'displacing' of gas comes in. Carbon Dioxide is heavier than Oxygen and Oxygen does not dissolve well in water in one atmosphere (regardless of temperature). Hence, Carbon Dioxide happily scratches backside hovering on the surface of solution.
Maximum dissolved Oxygen or DO is normally 8 ppm. Which is why your tests maximum is approximately 8 ppm.
I am terribly familiar with the sort of individual you mentioned. I call them "PubMed idiots". They are obsessed with sciency papers. Those idiots clearly do not know how dirty peer-reviewed papers can be, and certainly do not so science. There will be at least one of that idiots will show me irrefutable and infallible scholarly journal that stirring is enough. (It happened anyway. LMAO!) Yeah right, tell it to yeast factories and any people or premises with bioreactors. Economics tells us all to go inexpensive and minimalistic, in business terms means low cost while earning more money, but still never will they discount proper aeration or oxygenation.
I am so new to this, so your reply would be very helpful. I have a new fluval flex 32.5 gallon freshwater tank kit. Since it has a filter pump, can I still use this air pump or do I need a specific filter/set up? I only hear sponge filter from people who use this. I don't know how to set this up and the website doesn't help newbies with clear instructions. Thank you.
I would recommend using the filtration built into the system. It is a great system.
Now if you want to add onto it you can use one of the small air pumps and hook it up to either an air stone or sponge filter and place it in the aquarium.
Sponge filters are great for how cheap and easy they are but with you already having a built in filter you are set.
I run a air stone in my 120 gallon Fahaka Puffer tank. Now it states its a 4 inch air stone. Would one of the Ziis be enough for that tank? Should I place it into a sponge filter or having it placed near the glass is ok? My stone I have now is white, but within 3 to 4 weeks turned to a green.
You will find that the size of the air stone does not matter that much. It really comes down to the amount of air being pushed through the stone. In my opinion a ziss air stone and a small air pump would be beneficial to your 125 gallon tank because it is still adding that surface agitation. And it is up to you if you want to place it into a sponge filter, will only add beneficial filtration along with benefits of the air stone. And I often have air stones and sponge filters near the glass of my tanks with no concern.

So I have a wave maker that I added an air pump too so now it pumps out water full of air bubbles but not too many! Will it help the health of my plants and fish, will it also side my plants to pearl?
It is drawing in oxygen and dispersing it into the water. If you are with the look of the bubbles it will be a benefit. I cannot guarantee it will make your plants Pearl
Been keeping tropical fish for roughly 5 years and never even considered an air stone until this video (got one from Lidl for £6:99) and I'm kicking myself for not getting one sooner...

I have 2 guppies and 2 black skirt tetras in a 28 gallon tank. The guppies seem to stay up top but the black skirt tetras don’t. I do have an air pump and the hose is connected to a seashell so that when the bubble goes up it raises the shell lid. Anyway, it blows a big bubble up top. Do I still need an air stone or is what I got just as good?
Guppies are top feeders so they will be at the top black skirt tetras are middle so they will stay middle and sometimes bottom ish I would still recommend an air stone
Hey! Im a new fish owner, i have guppies and shubunkins which are about 2 inches long already and i have some snails in their tanks, can i use an airstone even with the snails in them?
Absolutely. An air stone will not affect snails negatively at all
My only concern is that you're mixing a cold water goldfish with tropical water guppies. More likely to have diseases or shorter life span if they're not in their natural temperature range
Off the wall questions... do you need to put it at the bottom or can i hang it near the surface... to prevent the current from blowing everything around too much, but still adding enough oxygen?

My 5 gallon aquarium has 4 live plants in it. I have one fish (a male Betta) Do I still need an air stone?
It never hurts. If you are using let’s say a hang on the back filter you are still bringing in oxygen to the tank with the water movement on the surface
I bought an airstone with sponge filter, however when i put it in my guppy tank, they started to swim up and down constantly which i worried that they might be stresses. Just wondering, might it be the problem the airstone i bought too big for my 8gallon guppy tank and should i buy a smaller one like the one u holding because mine is twice as large.
The airstone size will not matter, it is the size of the air pump that will actually affect how much current is being produced by the airstone. Even with the small one I am holding I can produce a lot of flow with it using a large air pump. I would not be to concerned as a lot of fish will actually play in the current.
@@WeldonTanks i see, so the current is the problem. I checked the airstone again and it seems you r correct. I don't think i will apply airstone on my guppy tank as they clearly not happy with the current made or at least not until i buy one with weaker pump and way to reduce the current made. Thanks

If I remove my filter to add the air stone in the sponge filter, will it disrupt the cycling process?
If you simply remove the filter to add the airstone and then put it back into the tank it will not disrupt anything.
After buying an air stone, do i have keep it soaked in water overnight before putting it inside my tank?
No you do not have to. If you are concerned about it you can rinse it in hot water. Personally I have never rinsed or soaked and never had a problem.
Can I use that instead of sponge filter?
Yes. I have used an air stone on its own plenty of times

We all start somewhere! Glad you are in the hobby. An air stone diffuses the air coming in to a smaller bubble. You can run just air line from an air pump but you will find it difficult to keep submerged and will get a larger bubble.
Dont listen to @Wel-Don Tanks, Betta's dont breath O2 from the water, They actually take air from above the surface, same as gold fish.
Now, there are other and better ways to add air to your aquarium.
A stone will clog over time from slime, cal buildup, etc..
However, with a water pump, you can add a line to the pipe, and air line sits above the surface. the pump will draw in are, and the force of the water pump will defuse the air bubbles into micro bubbles.
They also make venturi tips for the water pump, you can diy an air line before the pump intake.
There is also "soaker" hose, intended for gardens that have micro holes to soak a flower bed, etc.. add that to the end of an air pump for super cheap. you can buy rolls of the stuff for the price of air stones.

What if we have a power outage and my filter isn't working, does a (Rechargable oxygen pump) airstone gives oxygen while the filter is not on? Newbie here 😀
Yes, a battery operated pump even to just an air stone will assist your tank.

You could make the same test but not to controll o2 concentration but chlorine and chlorammine, beacause chlorine evaporate and chlorammine get oxydated in chlorine and NOx.
Hard part is getting test kits that accurately measure that.
Do air stones effect Co2 being ran into the tank?
You will have minimal amounts of co2 brought in from the air being pumped in. Now if you are injecting co2 there is a debate that by running an air stone it will decrease the oxygen levels. I have personally injected co2 for a planted tank filtered with sponge filters and never saw a decrease in usable co2 for the plants.

The strength is determined by the air pump you use.

You can use a sponge filter in place of an airstone. Still getting the benefits with added filtration

In my opinion it is not a bad thing to have air running in your tank even with a planted system.

Hi! New to the hobby! Is the goal to get the highest oxygen levels as possible? Can you reach a point where there is too much oxygen?
I would say the goal is to keep gas exchange happening. You will drive yourself mad trying to test oxygen levels. If you have surface agitation that will bring oxygen in.

I cannot tell you “IF” there is an amount of oxygen that can be harmful. What I can give is in my opinion you will not exceed levels by any normal means: air stone or filter causing surface agitation. Take a river for example and the amount of gas exchange taking place there.

Doesn’t it take CO2 out of the aquarium faster therefore not all the great for plants? (Idk if that’s how that works)
That is a common statement you will read on the internet but in reality any type of filter that causes surface movement will technically gas off co2 at a faster rate.
Here is my opinion: it will not gas off the co2 at a rate that will do any damage
Hard to find which air stone I need for a little 10 gal. This is 5th video watching and still don't know.
Any airstone will work, all do the same.
I would recommend the never clog airstone and usb Nano air pump from Aquarium Co-Op if you are in the states.

Information and advice is easily given but much more harder to accept.
You will always have critics even if your right. It's truly up to the individual to 1. Test water parameters and 2. Resolve issues based on that findings.
It more often that hobbyist overcrowd small tanks without taking into account what's needs of each species. Most cases the simplest way to resolve the problem is to do water changes. By doing this you remove some of bad water and wastes and replenish the tank with fresh water providing more oxygen.
I always like to follow the K.I.S.S mantra. Keep it Short & Simple.
We often overthink for solutions when it's as basic as water change or adding more oxygen or filtration.

I don't run air stones as I have sponge filters that do the same thing as well as filtering my water.

In my experience it has not. It may if you were able to run a line to draw air in from outside like reefers do with skimmers

I would not specifically say a particular fish needs it; adding an air stone will just bring greater oxygen content to the water. Even though a Betta has the ability to breathe at the surface, greater oxygen content will provide a healthier environment for the fish in my opinion.
Idk why but my airpump or airstone isnt making a lot of bubbles.
Stronger the air pump the more “bubbles” it will produce. If you are using a Ziss air stone you can adjust the flow rate through the stone by turning it.
@@WeldonTanks There must be something wrong with my air pump, the diaphragm possibly. It's a tetra 10 gal air pump I believe, the smaller ones. I've had it for 2 months.
It produces only a single line of bubbles, not a lot, incredibly minuscule.
I might just buy the usb nano air pump from aquarium co op. But it's a shame I spent about $15 on a tetra air pump for it to last only 2 months.
I have used a lot of the tetra pumps in the past with decent results.
I would check your line for any kinks or even if anything is clogged.

The same process as an airstone. It is still causing surface agitation which will allow gas exchange. Plus you are running the air pump into the sponge filter.

The camera will give u better reading then your eyes can see do to all the pixels to mimic color

The size of the air stone actually does not matter. For a 55 gallon a Ziss never clog air stone paired with a usb nano air pump would be perfect.

I have those exact Ziss air stones that I put inside my sponge filters, all powered by their own USB air pump.
There is a myth of air stones, that the bubbles themselves somehow diffuse oxygen into the water as they pass through the water but you are right, it is the popping at the surface that creates agitation and it is that agitation that causes oxygen and carbon dioxide to each exchange with the atmospheric air.
The real test of this idea would be to use something like inert nitrogen gas instead of atmospheric air to create the bubbles coming out of the air stone and see how the oxygen levels in the tank compare to a tank running an air stone off a conventional air pump.
Sounds like a fun experiment to run but you are out of my league on that one lol
Bubbels in water do not provide Oxgen , but surface agitation does that. i see so many people think that way there is no bubbels at sea.
so if you have a filter does a good agitation at surface its all good you do not need air stone ..

It's not the "popping" that does the oxygenation, contrary to what Cory from Aquarium Co Op says. It's the turbulence caused by the bubbles rushing to the surface through the water column. Is the same gaseous exchange principle from surface agitation.
