    I'm running a spray bar and an air stone. No such thing as too much oxygen. The fish love it. They like to play in the current but also have areas of low current.

    I started adding air stones to all of my aquariums last year or the year before, and I've noticed since that the water quality is easier to maintain at a consistent level, most of my plants grow out much quicker (especially the normally slower-growing ones, crypts and anubias in particular grow WAY faster than before), and my non-anabantid fish seem perkier. Anabantids are my centerpiece fish in almost every tank, and of 20+ tanks in my house only a couple don't have bettas (they have either other anabantids as the centerpiece, or loaches). So yeah, multiple airstones on gentle, low settings for every tank so they don't blow the bettas around.
    High-flow in my loach tank, both from the filter and from the airstones. My plants are practically immortal in almost every tank. Rasboras of all types, guppies, platys, mollies, corydoras, plecos, and loaches all enjoy the increased water oxygenation.

    People try to claim that all airstones do is add extra surface movement. But they seem to forget that each individual air bubble has it's own surface area and dissolves oxygen into the surrounding water.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop 5 лет назад +9

      The internet focuses on gas exchange at the surface. Which is fine, but that's like saying pizza is all about the toppings. If you don't have any crust, then it's no longer pizza.

    • @Ayane13b
      @Ayane13b 5 лет назад +2

      You're correct, but also incorrect. Yes, each bubble has its own surface area. But it's not in contact long enough to actually do an awful lot. Just like using an air stone for Co2 injection will do almost nothing.
      Secondly, as long as you have enough surface agitation, you basically reach the point that you would reach with an airstone.
      Bear in mind, I myself haven't conducted the science, but am gathering my information from people that have. Also, by no means am I saying that airstones are bad and useless, because quite frankly, a lot of people don't know what they are doing and an airstone would benefit them. But you just can't look at someone without an airstone and blindly assume that their fish aren't as "happy" as yours are because you run an airstone.

    A case of different environment for different tools. An air-stone for an indoor aquarium, removes splashing and the risk of water damage. Especially if the tank is located in an office, with electrical sockets, paper, books, etc. But it makes sense to use splashing water in an outdoors aquarium, where delicate things don't get stored.

    One more test I’d like to see RE oxygen levels. I believe in airstones but I’m also curious to know how much a heavily planted aquarium effects the oxygen levels. We have looked at canister filters, hang on backs, airstones but the one test I’d really like to see (I don’t have an oxygen meter) is how much oxygen is dissolved in the water column in a heavily planted aquarium without any other form of water movement or a bit of movement from a pump midway down the tank. Could this be set up as the final o2 test?

    Hey... I'd been dosing flourish Excel heavily in my 15 gallon planted tank... I had an airstone on there running 24 hours but noticed that my plants weren't doing too great... I dose about 3 ml daily and my fish were doing fine but I lost all my shrimp in the process. Few days back I pulled out the airstone and am now noticing that the plants are doing better without it... That's just my personal experience tho. I guess the Excel releases co2 in very small amounts so it was getting gassed off too quickly... I'm switching over to diy co2 soon tho since I want to add shrimp and see faster growth in my aquarium.

    It's easy to say that a water change will help lower nitrate levels in an aquarium, but for many people, they unknowingly have city water that would be considered high in nitrates. Example, it's basically impossible for me to lower my tanks's nitrate levels with a water change, because my tap water already has between 0.25mg/L to 0.64 mg/L (as stated by my city's online quarterly report). Everyone should check online to see what their own city tap water actually has.
    Many hobbyist say that you should try to aim for between 0.10mgL to .20mg/L (the lower one being ideal for a fresh water tank), but that's impossible for me to do. I've read that in the USA, many people have tap water that is around .10mg/L (or less). If I had that level, I'd be able to lower my aquarium's nitrates very easily with a quick water change.
    The only solutions I have available, is with ion exchange, distillation, or reverse osmosis... and of course, using one of Seachem's nitrate removal solutions, but I don't like to use chemicals in my tank unless absolutely necessary. Anyway, I can buy RO water from my local fish store, but the cost can add up over time. That's why I have also chosen to add low maintenance plants to my aquarium. The tanks food/feedings are very low already, so the levels in the tank (ammonia, nitrite, etc) are not affected by it (as confirmed with multiple water tests over a few months using my API fresh water master test kit). But even with the plants (which do help consume nitrates and other minerals), I still need to use RO water when I do a water change. Btw, all other levels (ie, ammonia, nitrites, etc) are zero.

    I'm assuming it's counterproductive if you're running pressurized CO2

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop 5 лет назад +5

      Why would it be counterproductive? co2 and oxygen are independent. You can have high levels of both in water. All of my planted aquariums, even with co2 injection run airstones. Most people will say "the bubbles will cause gas exchange" they certainly will, but you don't have to run an airstone full blast, even a very small trickle of air makes a huge difference. As can be seen by a trickle of co2 makes a huge difference.

    • @Ayane13b
      @Ayane13b 5 лет назад +4

      Assuming I'm understanding your comment correctly, I'll explain it like this.
      The amount of O2 in your water is not affected by the amount of Co2, and the amount of each dissolved gas are totally separate entities.
      Co2 doesn't reduce the amount of O2, or vice versa.
      That being said, if you don't want to gas out your fish while running the highest amount of dissolved Co2 possible, you need lots of O2 your water, which would generally be more than a standalone airstone could provide.
      Reaching that amount of O2 is quite ridiculous, hence why we don't generally pump in a crapton of Co2.

    • @AquariumCoop
      @AquariumCoop 5 лет назад +10

      We don't announce every price change, prices for our products change often. Most often they get cheaper. As to why these plants went up, our buy price went up from the farms. Being that we are running at a much lower margin, we have to pass along increases until we can find a way to reduce our costs again. Easy Carbon and Easy Iron also went down by $3 each bottle. Prices change all the time based on availability and our prices. The same plant we used to sell at $12.99, we got it down to 4.99. Then the farms raised their price and now it's 5.99. If it were still 12.99, there was enough margin to absorb the cost. With much lower margins, any cost increase to us, means we essentially become unprofitable on the item. Conversely when we can lower prices we do, as seen with most products this year.

    Ziss filter is my giant air stone

  • @strayiggytv
    @strayiggytv 5 лет назад

    Would an air stone have any benefit in a betta only tank running a hob filter? I already have enough trouble trying to slow the flow on my hob so it doesn't disturb my betta. Adding an air stone would just create evenn more water flow and make it tough for the betta to find a still spot to rest in. Considering bettas gulp air and like still water it just seems like a waste.

    • @EYEoftenLOL
      @EYEoftenLOL 5 лет назад

      I made the switch to a sponge filter, acts like an air stone and the flow isnt too bad to stop my betta from getting around his 10 gallon jungle.

      Did you conclude this from testing with a dissolved oxygen test? In my testing those are the tanks that need it the most from the plants depleting the oxygen at night and people leaning towards just water surface movement.

    I still feel its a little bit of a myth but I would like to see real science done on it. Just that I switched to hang on backs 14 years ago and I've never needed air after that, fish breed and stay a live show great colors still and my plants even do fine. I might be super wrong but I look at numbers more then I look at hearsay.
    Great Vid Keep up the good work.

    • @urbansk8r231
      @urbansk8r231 5 лет назад

      Anything that ripples the surface or cause water movement is allowing more o2 to enter water. So your hang on back is doing some of the job the airstone is doing. I think the vid was aimed at people who have still water.

      @@urbansk8r231 Then why did he say EVERY TANK in all caps multiple times?

    • @urbansk8r231
      @urbansk8r231 4 года назад +1

      @Anthony Czajkowski Hi, Cory's just emphasizing the benefits that an airstone makes. It also depends on how big your tank is as well. Because you can get dead spots (where o2 can't reach.) So having multiple devices at different ends of the aquarium, that riple the surface or creating a current will eliminate that. That's why I run a power head along with an airstone. I have a stocked planted tank with 29 fish.... If I was to turn off my airstone do you think the fish will struggle to breath?. Sure I run my airstone during the day, but it's mainly for night time when the lights on the tank is off. Everyone knows plants/trees use carbon dioxide (co2) to grow an expel oxygen(o2) for us to breath. What some people don't know is that it's the sun, or full spectrum aquarium light in our tank that trigger photosynthesis to start. When the light is off or the sun is down for the night. The plants an trees do the opposite. They take in o2 an expel co2. So at night in our tanks there is more co2 in the tank as a result. So I always turn up my air diffuser at night to agitate more of the water surface, allowing. more o2 to enter water, and also for some of the co2 to gas off. Hope that cleared it up for ya. Thanks Cory for doing that test to show that the ehiem pump is the quiet one. ✌

      With your condition it's perfectly understandable. Cory wasnt saying you must have an airstone or your aquarium will crash. It's good that you dont believe everything you hear. I've heard Cory say this like 5 different times now, but he never actually goes into detail as to why. That is kind of important. Cory. You have to really say why especially when you say EVERY TANK. Why do I need an airstone Cory? My surface is agitated with a HOB filter, a powerhead pointed to the surface, and a surface skimmer. My gaseous exchange is fine. Why do I need an airstone Cory? My tank falls under every tank.
