The taxis have been improved greatly these days. They are locally made by Toyota and almost in all cases they are road worthy and modern. However, taxis are mostly used by people who stay in townships who do not have cars. In the suburbs people either drive their own cars or use Uber. I don't see you guys taking these kind of taxis when visiting SA. So I would say only people needing this form of transport use it, since it is extremely available and covers areas that are not served with busses. They are the back bone of transport for commuters, there is a taxi for every route. They also cover long distances, I would think that the long distance taxis are the ones where you are likely to wait for long, before it fills up. Old taxis have largely been removed from the roads and the traffic officers are always on the look out and inspecting them for road worthiness.
Guys don't even try to board a taxi in SA we understand and don't usually have a choice, no one arrives home smiling from a taxi we all leave the taxi we a story to tell. It's a bad attitude of drivers mixed with some uncomfortable seats and some kind of odours found in a military hospital.

The vehicles he's calling taxis are mini buses with around 12 to 14 seating capacity. These exist in Trinidad and Tobago in two sizes, around 14 seaters and around 24 seaters and are called "maxi taxis" or just "maxis" and are shared taxis. They travel specific designated routes, like public buses do, pick up or drop off passengers anywhere along the route, and have a colored stripe along each side that designates the route. The larger ones sometimes have someone who functions like a conductor, collecting payments.

In Joburg the people are rude in Durban KZN you can speak English to the taxi driver no smoking allowed though but in predominantly Indian areas they smoke in the taxis
I guess the language thing mostly applies to Joburg. Most of the taxi drivers I've seen in Cape Town are coloureds, so English or Afrikaans will get you by.
The Ubers here in Cape Town don't seem to mind you sitting in front. I only sat at the back when Covid restrictions were in full swing. Many of the drivers also don't have passenger permits, so to avoid getting pulled over by cops and having their cars impounded, they'd rather have you sitting in front so it's not as obvious that they're an Uber.
If you planning a trip take Uber or hire private tourist shuttle company to drive you around please. There are different modes of transportation in SA we have a variety so pick the one that will help you to navigate your way around the country.
The presenter is mostly speaking "tongue in cheek" so please don't stress about hopping onto a minibus taxi. The minibus taxi is the lifeblood of transportation for millions of South Africans. ❤ from CPT, SA
In Namibia mini busses are used for long distances ,,,,around the town we use sedans and that's what we call taxis and for some long distances they also use 7 seaters especially not so far distances
The part about sitting in the front seat and signing a lifelong contract was said "tongue in cheek". However, you will be expected/asked to collect the fares and to give change, but just for the trip. From an ex minibus taxi driver in CPT ❤❤❤❤
I get what you guys mean with a private driver, BUT that takes the experience out of it. Coz you have to experience the interactions between the people getting in and out, and the driver etc. Maybe split it up. Dion goes alone an Ciara waits with the kids, and vise versa. This way you basically have 2 different experiences to share. And dont be alerted, but rather dont take the kids with, it might be too overwhelming. Thats just my opinion/suggestion
Taxies that take school learners to school (specifically high school learners) can hold a capacity of up to 50 learners in and 14-15 seater taxi😂😂. I mean some even come out of the boot (trunk)🤣🤣😭

1. I always avoid the passenger seat because my financial skills disappear when I sit there.
2. I had to learn IsiZulu just to communicate with JHB Taxi drivers because when I first got here, I'd speak my home language and they'd just ignore me.🤣
3. Finding the engine vacant is a privilege I am not always afforded😅
I think every South African has an experience of sitting in that engine. Its burn the shit outa ya ass😅😂
Avoid front seat😂😂😂
Will do, bro!😂
I ain't sure if SA Taxi drivers know how to use traffic lights or they just ignore them on purpose. Hilarious & dangerous right!? 🤣🤣
There's no seatbelts 😂
Children will sit on your lap
And be careful not to fight with texi drivers you might end up dead, just apologize even if his wrong don't go violence, specialy in Durban and cape town
Lol! Like the part "otla bona mao"😂😂😂
Also the English part. Never speak English 😅😅😅
Bro hit the nail on the head with this one😂😂😂
This is 100% true for Uganda
4:16 there aren't any seat belts in majority of South African taxi's 🫣
but taxi ranks do have lost and found room...if you lost your valuable item in the taxi you can go to the taxi rank and ask for it.
Rule number 1 SA taxi never sit in front 📢📢📢 I learnt the hard way
I like this guy's content 😂😂
If the taxi look older then their grandparents, just trust that that taxi driver is super experienced, you'll get to where you're going before time
LOI HE IS REALLY FUNNY THOUGH AND IT I AM A TEXI DRIVER MYSELF🤣🤣
It's all of them. ALL OF!!
Somethings are jokes you don’t have to wait for hours unless it’s long distance in most cases not in cities
7 sitters are mostly used for distances which are less than 400km or so
Wow this one Has some beef with the Taxi drivers😂
I smell spices in each and everyone of his tips😂😂
That is how it is in taxis, he is still puting it mild, and they disobey all traffic rules
Interestingly we in Cape Town dont do the hand signals
We look at the destination that's pasted on the windscreen and our index fingers does the rest of the work.
If you come to East London, Eastern Cape, I will take you on a taxi ride experience
😂😂😂 he was on point mostly, but he was also exaggerating alot
The part about sitting in the front seat and signing a lifelong contract was said "tongue in cheek".
However, you will be expected/asked to collect the fares and to give change, but just for the trip.
From an ex minibus taxi driver in CPT
❤❤❤❤
I get what you guys mean with a private driver, BUT that takes the experience out of it. Coz you have to experience the interactions between the people getting in and out, and the driver etc. Maybe split it up. Dion goes alone an Ciara waits with the kids, and vise versa. This way you basically have 2 different experiences to share. And dont be alerted, but rather dont take the kids with, it might be too overwhelming. Thats just my opinion/suggestion
It sounds overwhelming 😂. I get anxious quickly when I’m overwhelmed so I’ll leave that to Dion.
Seems like an amazing experience…? I wish I saw it that way too
Taxies that take school learners to school (specifically high school learners) can hold a capacity of up to 50 learners in and 14-15 seater taxi😂😂. I mean some even come out of the boot (trunk)🤣🤣😭
the taxi industry of south africa is just like the mafia
The engine comment, i experienced it first hand and my zibunu were on fire
Come to cape Town if you wanna experience taxi
Arguably the best drivers on the road. Taxi drivers
Normally tourists will have a private cab and not travel with the locals...
I don't know if your friend will get the experience but definitely recommend it
Yes i leave in a rural village in South Africa and there is a taxi rank !honest to God that taxi will not leave the rank until is full whether is 4 hours wait its so frustrating !😈😈
I saw how concerned you were about the no English thing. but if you explain that you American, they'll be nice. Its just that if you a black South African and you speak english, they view you as a snob and they treat you like a snob.
Y'all should come to South Africa and experience it your self 😂😂😂
The hyperbole on some of the points he mentions though. But ngl for the moat parts it's true🤣😭
he is 100% correct
Taxi drivers differs from the cities he was mostly speaking of kzn taxi drivers based on the language, clearly shows that he haven't seen how they are in pta😂💔
Is it worse there?
lying unprovoked!!!
Yeah PTA they don't mind English to be honest. But again, front seat is a no go, or you'll learn the hardway.😂 And the sleeping part only applies if your destination is near. If it's the last or second last destination you can sleep comfortably at least until the swap.
There’s Ubers in SA but the taxi is xp definitely gotta be your bucket list😂
13:57 "Cheese boy" is Joburg slang that kinda means "rich boy", I think. Someone who's not 'hood. i.e. Someone who could afford to have cheese sandwiches packed in for school lunch.
Our taxis have numbers this side so at least we are saved from using fingers to symbolise locations😂
Taxi drivers dont throw hands they beat the shii outta you😂😂😂😂
Every he said was 100% true
True story about taxis 😂😂🤞
