Elmer tried to do a young Cassius Clay
Elmer looked like he was in a Rush to get out of that ring!
He wasn't in a rush to get back in either.
He didn't fight again for another six and a half years!
🤣I know. Clearly he was imitating Ali's style, which worked quite well against Liston.
This is why Sonny thought he would whup Ali n didn't train for Ali and why Angelo knew Ali would win
Sonny had already fought Ali in 1964 and Lost his title. This was in 1967 and Rush thought he could use an Ali style to whip Sonny but failed.
Well he whipped liston twice, so did he not train for both times.
@@tblake1114 The second time it was most likely fixed
I noticed that Elmer Rush's lateral movement bothered Sonny Liston.
Gone Ballistik Liston never really mastered the art of cutting off the ring and forcing his opponent to circle to the right, where he couldn't maneuver and punch at the same time. He just followed the man around the ring. Having said that, he was usually successful. But this weakness was observed by a number of opponents.
Go watch the fights when he was young. Start with Wayne Bethea
@@vestibulate Insightful comments. Thanks. I'm learning a lot from the comments here about cutting off the ring and such. I did notice that Rush's constant moving to Sonny's right meant he couldn't use his most effective weapon, that powerful long-reaching left jab. But I see your point that if he cut off the ring at any point he could have finished this fight quickly. Obviously Rush studied Liston's fights previously and saw this flaw, unfortunately, Rush didn't figure out to break through Liston's defences, he only figured out how to avoid being KOed.
Elmer Rush was an Olympic hopeful along with my father. I saw his picture daily as a kid in the book with all the boxers in it. I always thought that he had a cool pose. Lol. I was in elementary school. He saw that side to side and setting up the overhand right was Liston's weakness and he was successful for a while with it. He did not follow up with any left hooks to the body I noticed. Ali threw lefts and rights in combination with so much speed that Liston was in trouble in the first fight round 1.
That was the day where ali was stripped of the WBA Title again
I also noticed that when they were in the clinches Liston punched a lot and Rush did not.
He was more worried about not getting hit
Well, Liston undoubtly was leathal in a toe to toe situation - but when meeting somebody running backwards he looks like a complete amateur. Couldnt any of his trainers just showed him how to cut off the ring for a backpeddling oponent . . .?
Anders Richardsson how about using this fight for a workout. I guess you didn't know that Andrés
If so, this would have been an excellent "work-out" for training the art of cutting off the ring - which Liston obviously failed to do. Compare how George Foreman was a masterr in this practise. Even Ali realised there was no escape and found himself trapped against the ropes.

Liston was also able to cut the ring succesfully in his prime years. Watch his older fights and you ll realize that. He was too old and heavy at that time.
He never learned how to cut off the ring especially noticeable in first Ali fight
Foreman, Tyson, and Frazier, were better at cutting off the Ring than Liston. But Toe to Toe Liston was brutal
Nobody could do it like Ali
Elmer ran like a scared rabbit Elmer Fudd
Wonder what the referee tell him at 3:30?
+Shadowsnake 89 You need to fight, son
'Move your ass, Elmer."
Looks like the ref kind of discouraged rushes style and cussed him to stand still too much. I think rush wanted to play escape artist for the first few rounds then when Liston was tired look for an opportunity.
The ref likely would have just asked him to engage more, you can dance all you want in the ring as long as you throw some punches in.
If I was in the ring with Mr Liston I would be running faster than that dude..
Liston was a beast
1:25
They all try to move like Ali but there was only one of him and will never be another
Cool
Dude fought like it was a track meet
Liston vs Mayweather?
Liston easily kills mayweather
it looks to me that this is in the UK
AND LISTON NEEDED FIGHTERS TO COME IN HEAD ON FOR HIM TO BEAT THEM
The new Clay !!😅
Sonny sure had a mean glove
I respect BOTH fighters BUD AND ERROL, And had Crawford going into their first bout with a definitive edge, based on how Spence looked a year ago against Ugas. I felt Errol needed to be more active and bring more to the table in terms of versatility preparing for a counter puncher like Crawford. That being said, I dont see how These recent pictures somehow translate into these ignorant, baseless narratives in the comments that Spence is depressed, had his will and spirit broken, really doesn't want the rematch, he's this and that etc.....
Does anyone know the man personally to make these assumptions? Just curious if someone actually has the inside track to back up all of these " theories " . Actually no one knows. In summation 95 percent of these comments are just your basic run of the mill narratives.
When a ring was one size

Anders R Liston knew how to cut the ring off.
This is an show
Who do you think taught foreman all he knew. ?? Take a wild guess. It wasn’t dick Sadler
Michael Ares I Don’t think Liston taught Foreman anything. They where both brawlers relying on murderous punching power. A fight between them would certainly be spectacular. Liston mainly fought second rate fighters and only
against Williams and Patterson both foolish enough to trade punches ,
he managed to impress.
Anders R your wrong
Sonny was able to cut the ring off on this guy...Ali....was just so talented moved stuck...shuffled barrage amazing prime Ali..
I thought Sonny was bad at cutting the ring off in this fight
Prime Ali and Old Liston . It is believed that Liston was between 38-42 years of age when he fought Ali
@@wayneedwardwhite6240 I've been hearing that one person said Liston was actually 44 in his first fight with ali
Sonny was in side killer, would have trouble with boxers with great movement Ali, also Sonny was a bully hit him good he doesn't like it
Dude is TERRIFIED
Sonny must have been over 50 in this fight?!
Was the ref Harry Gibbs?
