Liston's best fight. Look how skinny he was here compared with later. Liston looked liked Joe Louis with the accuracy of his punches. Gave his opponent no chance to recover.
It's unfortunate that Sonny Liston is remembered primarily for those two humiliating fights he had with Cassius clay (AKA Muhammad Ali.) in his two Cleveland Williams fights and his fight with Marty Marshall where he fought on for six rounds with a broken jaw liston proved he could take punishment.
1. Look at some of George Foreman's first 40 opponents before facing Ali,, all cruiserweights and tiny heavies with losing records: Fred Askew -- 2 wins 6 losses Johnny Carroll -- 12 wins 19 losses Roy Wallace -- 7 wins 12 losses Leo Peterson -- 3 wins 4 losses Bob Hazelton -- 3 wins 6 losses Levi Forte -- 20 wins 21 losses Charley Polite -- 11 wins 14 losses George Johnson -- 17 win 19 losses Lou Bailey -- 16 wins 30 losses Mel Turnbow -- 8 wins 10 losses Stamford Harris -- 14 wins 21 losses Vic Scott -- 1 win 2 losses Joe Murphy Gordwin -- 1 win 14 losses Ollie Wilson -- 21 wins 39 losses Clarence Boone -- 3 wins 25 losses Terry Sorrell -- 4 wins 15 losses Shocking isn't it. The rest are not much better like one arm one 👁️ eye high blood pressure diabetic cruiserweight Joe Frazier. "My left eye went when I was young. I was working the speed bag and some steel went in the eye and scratched it to pieces. I was blind in that eye. Some doctors were my best friends. We sheltered the story and kept it a secret. And I learnt the eye-chart by heart." -- Joe Frazier Medically Joe Frazier would not be allowed to fight professionally today. Fact 💯
2. Foreman was relatively unknown when he challenged Joe Frazier for his heavyweight crown in 1973, that's why he was a 3 to 1 underdog going in. Frazier had slipped since beating Ali in 1971. That fight had taken a lot out of him and Joe was about 10 pounds heavier when he got into the ring with Foreman, which is a clear indication that he had lost some of his desire to train. The only names on Foreman's record that stood out were 19-5 B-Level punchbag Chuck Wepner and 59-16 214 lb 6'0" George Chuvalo. Foreman's greatest win at his best was against little one arm one eye high blood pressure diabetic cruiserweight Frazier inside two rounds. After knocking out the overmatched 54-27 5'10 196 lbs Jose Roman in the 1st, Foreman scored his second best career win against Ken Norton. Kenny had just broke Ali's jaw and many boxing experts believes he beat Ali second and third fights also. Foreman destroyed Norton, again in under 2 rounds. This was the high point of his career. When he agreed to fight Ali, many feared he would seriously hurt the aging former champion.
3. Foreman was always a slugger, never a patient slick boxer. That's why after the 3rd round, commentator Joe Frazier said George is rushing himself and not staying calm, he's not going to last. Frazier saw exactly what we all saw. Ali didn't pull off a miracle, he simply used his defensive boxing skills and counter punching which was tailor made for slugger George and his lousy philly shell defense. What should have been Ali's most difficult fight was actually one of his easiest because Foreman Panicked in the sweltering heat and humidity which exceeded 90 percent and punched himself out. Ali took complete control by the 2nd round and controlled George like he was an amateur fightin in a Golden Gloves tournament. Ali was peeking through his gloves and hitting George at will while George was flailing away like a wild kitty cat. Did y'all see how illegally loose those ropes were. They were loose enough to allow Ali to avoid getting hit in the head leaving Foreman no choice but to go after the body. Fans demanded an immediate rematch but Ali knew better. If Ali was really the greatest why didn't he prove it by having a trilogy of fights with George? NO NO WAY, instead Ali ran back to tiny washed up one 👁️ Although Foreman went on to bully Frazier for a second time after his loss to Ali, it was clear he was not the same fighter. He was knocked down twice and looked very vulnerable against Ron Lyle in their slugfest. Then several easy fights later, George was humiliated Again, this time by featherfisted 19% KO's Jimmy Young. Being devastated and depressed Foreman retired from boxing.
4. Comeback Foreman was flattered by two things: #1. Frazier made george look better than he was. #2. Ali made norton look better than he was. Here's some more bum of the month club fighters with losing records they hand picked for George: Frank Lux 19 wins 30 losses Mark Young 11 wins 13 losses Manoel de Almeida 3 wins 8 losses Mike Jameson 14 wins 15 losses Little 5'7" Qawi hit Foreman at will till he ran outta gas (why couldn't Frazier hit Foreman at will? Cause Joe was simply a one dimensional left hook slugger, never a slick boxer). Gerry Cooney fought George with his right arm tied behind his back, he didn't throw a single right hand punch. Holyfield and Morrison hit George whenever they wanted to and Alex Stewart gave Foreman the worst beating of his career closing both his eyes. Foreman proved he had the talent to compete in his second career,, but that's it ..in truth, old Foreman was a celebrity fighter by then. Nobody minded that he leap frogged real contenders to cherry pick opponents with belts that suited him stylistically and were 30 to 40 pounds smaller. First Foreman tried Holyfield for a belt. Three fights later he tries Morrison for belt, then very next fight they hand George his belt on a silver platter for fightin career LHW Moorer. Big George wanted absolutelyyy Nothing to do with "POWER" hitters Lennox Lewis, Riddick Bowe, Ike Ibeabuchi, David Tua, Mike Tyson, Oliver McCall, Andrew Golata because he was to slow and his philly shell defense was atrocious. Boxing politics did the same for Ali as they did for Foreman. Just follow all the $$$ trails for answers 🤑
Young sonny liston 1950s/ 1962& invincible: bonecrushing punching power before Cassius clay lucky didn't fought young sonny liston;; stretcher; smelling sauce & body bag
How times have changed! 1/A hair under 6'1", & "only", (in today's world), 206 lbs: Considered huge back then. 2/"Old" Joe Louis, being helped in the ring, was only 44 years old!
Not sure if Bethea is putting on an act for the audience complaining about the stoppage. Wouldn't blame him if he was. Just read in Sonny's latest biography that by the time the fight was stopped, Bethea had 18 teeth knocked out, broken or cracked, with several of them still sticking in Liston's glove!
Classic stuff before Sonny perfected his "baleful stare". I love the way the Baer brothers grabbed The Bombers arm's and escorted him to Sonny. Great upload.
Liston was one of the greatest and most terrible thugs in the history of boxe, perhaps the strongest. But he was really very unlucky. Without prison and ties with the mafia he would have become world champion several years before defeating Patterson and, in any case, he would have kept the world title for many years to comeif he had not had the misfortune to encounter a phenomenon unique in the history of boxing as Alì as a young man, the only boxer who could have confused him and bewildered him with a speed and mobility in incredible movements, unattainable, never seen before or after. So Liston could not use his exceptional, devastating, formidable power in the blows because Ali avoided them almost all. Many don't know that Bethea lost seven teeth in that meeting, four remained in the ring and three in Liston's glove. As well as few know that the managers of Liston offered Marciano in 1959 a mountain of money for a match with Liston but Rocky immediately refused it without hesitation and Marciano's wife, as soon as she saw Liston she told clenched teeth that her husband would not have met that monster because he had abandoned boxing for some years and she said through gritted teeth that she had absolutely no intention of of remaining widow or a wife of a disabled person still young. @@michaelares4240 The only time I seen Liston seem intimidated was the rematch against Ali in 1965. The way Ali stared him down , in his eyes saying I’m going to fck you up, no wonder Liston sht & took a dive.If he couldn’t beat him by blinding him in the 5th in their first fight , there was no way he was going to knock out a bigger & faster Ali a year later.
@@TheBatugan77 Too convenient, superficial and wrong is to criticize without motivating. Liston, who was older than he claimed, without ties to the mafia and without prison would have been world champion already in 1952-53 by beating Marciano. He was much more complete, technical and powerful than Ezzard Charles (who was afraid of him), Marciano's best opponent. As for Ali, find me in the history of boxing someone like him who wins the title, holds it for three years, takes it away from him because he refuses to go to war and recaptures it seven years later, when he is now 32 years old and is already in decline and he no longer has the astonishing speed and mobility of the past that allowed him to avoid the majority of shots. And he retains the title for another four years, in all fourteen years at the top, an enormous, an exceptional feat, never accomplished by anyone . How can one reasonably deny such greatness? It would go against all logic. Who has ever managed to do so much? Ulteriori informazioni su questo testo di originePer avere ulteriori informazioni sulla traduzione è necessario il testo di origine

dont know why bethea was protesting after practically turning his back and running away from liston lol
Sonny was the only one to stop Bethea in his career, 1st round too, impressive
Refs usually let guys get clobbered during this era, great stoppage
Actually, I like watching guys getting clobbered.
turning your back= "I don't wanna fight."
