The Ferrari 512 TR - The car of the 80s and 90s

  • The Ferrari Testarossa has become an icon of the 80's, and for good reason. Built with an aggressive and in your face design, coupled with ample power from the mid mounted flat 12 engine, the Ferrari Testarossa, Ferrari 512TR and Ferrari 512M were the poster car for many auto enthusiasts of the 80's and 90's. The original Ferrari Testarossa produced 385 horse power, and its wide and low body helped keep it glued to the road. However in the ever evolving automotive world, pushed forward by the desire for more and more power, the next variation of the Ferrari Testarossa, the Ferrari 512 TR, was bumped to 428 horse power! Ferrari also made many changes to the car to improve the handling, such as lowering the entire engine and transmission in order to improve handling. The Ferrari Testarossa series was Ferraris best selling 12 cylinder car, with about 10,000 units produced across all the various models. About 7,700 of those were the original Ferrari Testarossa, with production reduced to about 2,200 for the Ferrari 512TR, and a mere 501 512M. There is a good reason the Ferrari 512 TR and entire Ferrari Testarossa series has become so popular today. With timeless styling and immense power, it is everything you could want from a sports car from the 80's.

I was a Tech when the 512TRs were new. I think my store sold about (10) of them. So good of a car some owners, about (6) drove them daily and proceeded to stack on the miles. One of the most reliable Ferraris I have ever worked on.

One of the most iconic supercar designs of all time. You show a picture of the Testarossa/512 TR to anyone and they'll instantly know it's a Ferrari. It looks amazing even by today's standards, just imagine driving one in the 80's. It must've been like a UFO landing to see the Testarossa on the road. Absolutely wonderful machine.

Love the 512 TR - I have always thought of it as the original Testarossa with the kinks worked out, and a bit more polish on the interior treatment. I would buy a 512 TR before a 512 M, any day (price no object, in this case).

The 512M is one of my favourite modern cars (post ‘90). Finally saw one in the flesh last year and it blew me away. The thought of that titanium crank spinning and singing is something else. The presence it had was undeniable- don’t judge until you see one before your eyes over pics in a magazine. For me it would have to be in an unusual colour. Oro, Grigio ingrid or canna di fucile.
    Stunning machine

Its unclear why Ferrari deleted the pop up headlights in the 512M because the F355 had pop up headlights until 1999. Lotus kept them on the Esprit till 2004! Either way, aesthetically, to my eyes the 512 is the one to get.

I still keep mine in very good condition and I still drive it every weekend. Originally was red, then it was painted white and now is black. Got a few swapped parts here and there and BBS rims but mostly it's still as I bought it in Germany 36 years ago. To me, it's one of the most durable Ferraris ever made.

I also want to make the case for the 512 TR. I have owned one since 2006. Done many miles in it. The car usually works, it is a nice place to be. Also on longer trips. You can drive fast in it also on smaller roads. And when it rains it creates a lot more spray behind the car compared to normal cars on the road - so its cool to drive in the rain also ;-)

I firmly believe a no-stories well documented 512TR will be trading at $500k USD levels in the next 18-months. They built/sold much fewer of them for the US Market and they reflect the best of the Testarossa lineage. Assembly quality/fit/finish and performance improvements. Not to mention they're head and shoulders more attractive than the subsequent 512M.

She also said the 512M was more desirable. I don't think she did enough research. Mote rare doesn't mean more desirable. Also, the 512TR & M have a shorter rear end/qtr panels than the Testa.

Great video Colleen, the level of production is really stepping up. A lot of very interesting information in this one and I'd certainly consider the TR, never really took much notice of them until now. Like Ferrari sometimes do, they took notice of the things they needed to improve and did so...
I agree on the 512M, Ive never really cared for its looks, the TR is the sweet spot for sure.

I've long thought the 512 TR was the best looking of the Testarossas. It's not as sexy as the 288 GTO--stylistically my favorite Ferrari from the era--but it's definitely an automotive icon of the 1980s, along with the Porsche 959.

Among the Testarossa variants, the 512 TR is the one you want - it’s the original, but with the bugs worked out, and without the crazy price of the 512 M (due principally to scarcity).
    Decent examples currently around $ 270 K (June 2024).

I think they look cool as hell.. they scream 80s and early 90s to me which obviously thats where they from lol. I just like the look of em their just really neat... the pop up head lights , just as the 3rd gen Transam , the Lamborghini Countach and the diablo and the c4 vett all those iconic cars of that era where pop up head lights

My first sighting - as a young man driving my mums car i was passed by a red testarossa. The thing was just driving at a slow speed in a quiet neighborhood. The visual impact of it gliding by my sholder was way more than anything id ever seen come past me. Then up at the traffic lights i was able to take in the dynamic look of it a bit more. To this day a most favorable impression was made. A car with a stirring presence (imo).

Such an iconic car, one of my absolutely favorites in the Ferrari line of beasts. It’s look and styling hands down is stunning and that 12 cylinder engine’s sound is melodic and hypnotizing you mentioned that they can get loose and swap ends if you put too much throttle input, I wanted to ask; does the car communicate that while driving, can you feel that threshold of it loosing adhesion or is it instantaneous? I have heard stories second hand and I wasn’t sure if they were accurate. Thank you in advance! Great video, your on camera presence is really enjoyable and informative!
