  • Just in time for Halloween here is my thoughts on Fear and Hunger on Steam and itch.io. Can't necessarily say I recommend this game to just anyone... it's undoubtedly the most disturbing and terrifying game I've played in over a decade.

Yes, definitely. The RPG/survival horror hybrid game Sweet Home on the Famicom was considered one of the scariest games ever made for many years and it was also the biggest influence on the creation of Resident Evil.

I consider the Fear & Hunger series to be one of the best things in gaming, it's up there close to SMT and Blasphemous when it comes to my biggest gaming obsessions. Fear & Hunger 2: Termina is also a must-play, the mechanics of the series are better realized in that game. While it is more forgiving than the first game in some ways and has a reputation for being easier because of this, it doesn't lose any of the horror element and it is also more challenging in some ways, there are some enemies and bosses that are more difficult than in the first game. For example, there are more bosses where you will instantly lose the fight instead of just taking a lot of damage if you lose a coin flip during the battle and there are more enemies that use mind control attacks that turn your party members against you. While it is easier to restore lost limbs in the second game, it also seems easier to lose limbs as well.
For those who like the Fear & Hunger series, I strongly recommend checking out The 7th Circle: Endless Nightmare and Inferno: Beyond the 7th Circle. Those are also brutally hard survival horror dungeon crawlers, but they play from a 1st person perspective with an interface similar to the Eye of the Beholder games. In these games you fill face powerful enemies, it is difficult to refill HP and MP, and resting comes with the risk of being ambushed in your sleep, so you will have to evaluate risk and reward in choosing when to fight and when to attempt to flee. Dealing with hunger and preventing status effects from becoming fatal are also a major part of the gameplay in this series.

Thank you so much for putting these games on my radar. Truly never played anything like them before and I have got to try the 7th circle series. They sound eerie lol. I’m excited and nervous to try Termina someday. But truly Fear & Hunger is one for the history books

3 games that absolutely made me shit my pants for different reasons.
Fear and Hunger, the idea and context of everything. The fear of encounters and starving. Losing progress. Termina is more of the decisions that come along with your choices. As a DM for D&D fear and hunger, and the way its written is very well done.
    2) Darkwood. The noise, and ambience. Holy shit. Flew out my seat a couple times. 😂
    3) Amnesia The Bunker.
The other amnesia games had scary moments, and tense moments. This whole game rides that intensity, that even the flash light making noise. Made my skin on edge. Not to mention if you have a headphone amp. I can hear the rats in the walls. 😂

Where I agree it’s very scary, I do feel Darkwood is the scariest game I’ve ever played. It’s legitimately terrifying. F & H is right up there with it, but for me it’s just utterly oppressive and harrowing, and so far nothing has dethroned Darkwood.

This game accomplishes horror in every metric possible.
    -Jumpscares
    -Graphical horror
-Prior horror traumatic experience on what could possibly happen to you later. Heck even stuff that wasn't supposed to be scary started scaring me like large rolling iron balls
-Possible death can lead to more horror.
-Even after you're done playing you are scared yet you want to play and haunted/addicted to it.
    -Causes existential crisis
-How it makes you scared by your gamer senses
-The music/sound alone can scare you.

I have not yet played this game (I do not have a PC 😞) but in my wanting to learn more about this game I have inadvertently stumbled upon minor spoilers in my readings that I would rather have not known so as to experience the shock when things first happen. Which leads me to say: I felt extremely chilled when the prison guard noticed you and you trapped yourself in a room when trying to run away... 😬😰😰😰

Holy hell this game looks intense. It's like a way beefier and crazier Sweet Home... One of my favorite horror turn based RPGs. It's only $3.99 on steam right now... I'm apprehensive, as I usually don't play super gory, intense horror games, however I think I'm gonna grab this and give it a shot. Amazing video and review. Perfect for my favorite time of year!

Is a game not relevant to you unless it is a new release? While Fear & Hunger has built up a small cult fanbase over the years, its fanbase is tiny even by the standards of cult games. So wouldn't giving it more exposure be a good thing? If more people play this game and its sequel, then it will greatly increase the chance that a Fear & Hunger 3 will exist some time in the future. An attitude like yours would probably piss off developers and publishers if they saw your comments because you are essentially criticizing someone for giving their games more exposure that they need to be more successful in sales.
