Great review! The thing I like the most about the series is the idea that you keep delving too deep out of curiosity, but you didn't have a choice once you entered anyway

It is an awful game about agony, despair, Fear and Hunger. You will not enjoy it, and you'll feel like you're being crushed by the atmosphere. And honestly? I think we need more games like this- that capture that roughness and how fucked things can be.
    The sequel is even rougher.
Edit: for clarification, I mean awful and rough in a genuinely affectionate way- that the horrible things are what make F'unger work and that oppressive atmosphere is something we need more of in today's triple a sludge fest of power fantasies. I guess what I mean to say is this series is ugly and horrible in a gorgeous and appreciative way.
Thank you to the creator of Fear of Hinger. You legitimately made something that captures the title and deliver on the brutality.

Also definitely try pathologic. The soundtrack in that game is phenomenal, it is just as brutal and unforgiving as funger but in a much more rewarding way imo, if you're into that kind of stuff. Atmosphere is brilliant too, you play a doctor trying to cure a plague.

There's a stark beauty to both of them though darkest dungeon is a lot prettier intentionally so

What i love about fear and hunger is it's raw, unfiltered grime and grittyness.
What I also love it it's permanence, when you get cut you slowly bleed out in which you have to bandage the wound. You loose a few fingers and limbs in fights like in real life.
You can get infected from bites or stepping on rusty nails. If you loose your legs, you have to crawl like a worm. Your character will get beaten, battered and scarred through out a playthrough.
Enemies move differently, attack differently and have 8 or 16 limbs which have their own attacks.
The game is heavily knowledge based relies on strategy. Every run you get random items from crates and chests which force you to approach the enemies in new ways. If you get
an item that is weak against a coming enemy, that same item could be used to access a new section. (Like a key instead of a weapon)

If you enjoyed the game you might wanna try pathologic, a game about curing a town afflicted by a deadly disease. Does a lot of the same things with the grim atmosphere and unforgiving gameplay, if you let important npcs get sick you can't talk to them anymore, if you get bitten by a rat and catch the plague you're basically dead, have to worry about food etc. I think it does a lot of the things funger does even better, and is accompanied by an excellent soundtrack.

The suffering that this game gives you is strangely pleasurable, challenging, and agonizing, everything is done to see you in the most miserable way possible, AND EVEN THEN I LOVE THIS GAME, WHY? I DON'T KNOW, IT DOESN'T MAKE SENSE, IT'S JUST TORTURE, BUT IT'S WONDERFUL

The problem isn't the game's theme or the consequences of actions but the lack of attention to anything that would indicate clues as to what's going on, even for the more mundane things like... hey, you've got an infection. Instant death with only a warning of a tiny image on your character that you cannot find information for. It's an interesting game idea, it explores a cool place where most games do not go, but it is ultimately a disappointment you have to suffer through which, to me, isn't much of a video game but a misery simulator. I understand that might be intentional. It doesn't feel intentional. It feels half-assed but approaching something interesting.

I just started and am having a good time (curiosity sometimes gets the better of me, specifically with a certain toilet 😂) I dont need to worry about softlocking out of progression do I? @@coltj5907as far as I’m aware there are no doors that will be blocked off by killing a guard.
The only enemy early on that could potentially do that is Trortur. I won’t spoil what it is, all I will say is that it’s a cool but ultimately not mandatory thing in terms of getting endings.
Edit: side note, the two things that ARE required for some of the normal endings are:
      1. Getting to LeGarde in time and
      2. Having the girl in your party.
The other three normal endings can always be achieved.

@@goobermagoob9160 I was kind of worried about it so I didn’t save after it happened but there is actually another door that can be blocked.
It was very early in-game (I was backtracking), might be the first locked door you come across. I’d have to double check but I’m pretty sure it’s in the room with the statue of gods that has “save us” written on it when you interact. The door is on the left right in the beginning of the room. There was one of those standard guards standing there and it didn’t seem like it would move from that spot to patrol. I beat it and after I did I could interact with the guards body but not the door to use a key. As far as I’m aware playing so far the bodies don’t disappear but maybe I’m wrong about that.

I think the scariest part was running into a guard for the first time and me not knowing how my dad would react…
…He didn’t say a thing but later he literally called me out because I accidentally forgot to check some crates and barrels and such.
