The RPG Maker engine is known for the overabundance of horror games, but very rarely considered are the titles that are more Sweet Home than Clock Tower. These 10 games feature unique and uncomfortable experiences that blend the fundamentals of turn-based RPG games with the aesthetics and atmosphere of modern and classic horror tropes.

Im planning on making a turn based rpg phycological thriller about Christianity and his dark and awful past and this video really help me get more ideas on how to execute it better. Thank you!

Rpgmaker games keep surprising me with how versatile they keep proving themselves to be
I'm still trying to remember a RPG Maker game about a black guy and his sister. He was a cleric or priest and his sister was a sorceress. Why I remember that so fondly is because it was incredibly rare to have a black main character and also rare to have a white mage main character. It was really well made and the story was engaging with a frightening enemy from their own mistakes.

@exfurry4377 Sadly I don't. It was cleverly written. Had very interesting and colorful characters. Google isn't going to help it was decades ago.
@@epicalexfurry4377 If you want to try I still remember two character names Angelo and Pepper. I can't remember the two main characters brother and sister. They also had parents who run their school. Yes it was about a kind of Magic School. This shit was way before Harry Potter. The classes was things typical like fighter, cleric, mage stuff like that.

I was hoping to see also Black Souls somewhere too.
ONG, I knew funger was gonna be mentioned... it's basically the only horror turnbased game out there with GOOD gameplay instead of "click your best skill and that's it", Black souls 2 has decent combat but is kinda hard to figure out some DL3 fights (still one of my favorite all time games)

I feel Omori more like Earthbound beginnings (Mother) due to the graphics and movement too similar to the NES.

Came here from the algorithm but this is such an interesting video. Making a top 10 about a niche genre isn’t something you see everyday. I also appreciate the fact that it’s not overly drawn out or click baity for being a top 10. I appreciate that’s it’s straight to the point and actually shows obscure and interesting games besides the Off and Omori. Overall, great video.

As much of people love Omori my only biggest pet peeves about it is how long they stretch the game about something not related to the story, I really dislike how the headspace adventure (the most time you'll be spending on) is nothing sort of pointless it doesn't affect anybody or the story whatsoever and you don't even learn anything about anybody at all, it only finally gives you the main story piece and learning more about what you were interested in until the end of the headspace, it's like turning 180 degrees saying "oops forgot we have a main story of the game" after dicking around for hours.
I feel like Omori would benefit much better if the game was cut down being more simple and straightforward. The story isn't Avant-garde writing; puzzle piecing or symbolism theorizing story like OFF or Endroll there's a clear message and story that could've been viewed in a much better and simple way.
Either way for someone who loves the weird usage of storytelling on rpgmaker games and thought it would capture it like that just in a much bigger budget it was pretty disappointing it turn out this way.
TLDR Omori feels like playing a sidequest for 20 hours of the game and only get like 1 hour of main story of the game, it's annoying.
I would love to see a playthrough of Jummy and the pulsating mass, tried looking around but couldn't find one.

Ahh, I see you are a man of culture as well... Jimmy and the pulsating mass is kino af. After reaching the final stretch of the game, the different times it aluded to it broke me so much, hearing the ost of some of the optional super-fights make me bawl my eyes in hurt. Had good amounts of horror and unsettling things, hidden in childlike first stretches.

I just feel uncomfortable about that punishes you for escapism in your escapism.
Fear and hunger really and that bad. Its basically a knowledge based trial and error game. But once you learn what the game expects from you, it becomes less and less trial and error and more knowledge and logic based

Kodelka was a absolute masterpiece with the voice acting which was pretty rare with video games from the 90s I just wish it's sequel shadow hearts series had that same level of writing and story as it was uhhhh pretty goofy and anime-y to say the least the sound track for all 4 games slaps hard as fuck though

You mentioned Sweet Home in the intro, and that's true, that's the kind of game I think of when looking for horror games with actual RPG mechanics. Most RPG Maker horror games like Corpse Party or Mad Father or Misao are more akin to topdown puzzle or chaser games; I seek horror games that are more like the classic Final Fantasy series, or maybe even strategy horror games that play similar to XCOM. Actually while looking at a list of horror turnbased games, one had Inscryption listed among them. In some way that kinda makes sense considering card games do go by turns.
Exactly! Sweet Home is one of my favorite NES games of all-time. I also love Inscryption a ton (probably my favorite game in the last few years) and really want to try out the old XCOM games. Thanks for your comment!

I totally get that opinion about Omori - have had disagreements with friends before about the game. Can't deny the well-executed horror sections though.

Can anyone tell me free rpg maker games with good battle animation?
I found Nocturne rebirth, it has cool combat but i can't play further, it crashed after first battle.
At the moment, RPG Maker XP is free! Only a few more days left though.
