As a kid, this boss is when I hit the "I Don't Wanna Play This Game Anymore" mark.
It's Kriller Time right there with the Bottom of the Well in Ocarina of Time

This boss battle never scared me, but it sure had me laughing quite a bit. The entire time, I was thinking, “that’s Donald Duck!“
Man that feeling when you defeat a boss in this game is so nostalgic. When that victory soundtrack kicks in and the key appears with bright sparkles and the deep voice saying "Donkey Kong" is just bone-chilling. Still gets me to this day.
It was so relieving to hear that music after the second Dogadon battle
How does beating something feel nostalgic. Yes the game is old but this doesn't make sense. Nostalgia is just a clout word now.

My favorite boss of all of Donkey 64 bosses because of the design of this boss, the boss fight is pretty fun, also the fact that tiny Kong, is fighting a humongous sinister jack-in-the-box, he has a Donald Duck voice, and the music is great + The sinister laugh in the background makes the song even better

This is what happens when you combine donald duck with a jack in the box, a cyborg, and frankenstein's monster.
Pure unadulterated brilliant awesomeness!
Love this fight. It has good escalating tension to the plattforms suddenly rising, to not knowing what's inside the box to having to figure out how to actually hurt the boss to it upping the game by going into frenzied invisibility mode.
This fight is mechanically challenging and makes good use of Tiny's signature pony twirl jump which you really have to master if you want to beat this fight. I remember my hands getting sweaty and clutching up from the tension of having to nail every single jump.
The sound effect of the jack in the box charging its laser and releasing a deadly voltaic burst onto the platform you just stood on a mere second ago remains a favorite of mine onto this day. The fire balls are actually scarier though because they can hit you mid air and track your movements while the laser only ever hits the platform while you stay safe midair.
This boss is in my opinion the greatest! when you get to him, the first thing you notice is that there is not TNT barrel, so how should you make damage to him? you just start running for your life...

Me too and I would love to see Mad Jack return.
This in my opinion is arguably one of the best boss and battles for any 64 game.
This boss coupled with the dark abyss below and the insane laughter was so terrifying xD
To be honest, I didn't find this boss to be scary at all when I was a kid.
Instead, what terrifies me is the challenges I have to face in order to defeat Mad Jack.
The only thing that still terrifies me about this game is looking in first person view at a zinger dive bombing you.
Seeing Mad Jack go "bye bye" was the most satisfying thing as a child

***** Explain to me why the laughter was added in the sound track? It ruins it 100% and that Donald Duck laugh in a Nintendo based game? WTF Rare! And the setting for this boss is terrible. Why can't it be a like an evil circus with this boss not a fucking factory! I swear I just want to shove a banana down Tiny's gullet because she keeps making those noises when she spins. ANNOYING ISN'T IT!
EARNEST The YTP Master Well, the factory setting also had enemies based on toys (dominoes, dice, wind-up robots, etc). I think what they were trying to go for was "toy factory," not "general factory." The challenges you need to do are also themed around toys, like playing a giant keyboard (that makes burping sounds), scaling a tower of letter blocks, and even playing the original DK arcade game. Mad Jack fits the toy theme rather well.
***** I do agree with you man. But I wish the battle arena was better. Take The Factory Boss from DKC Returns. You have a fucking chicken controlling this huge ass robot and in the background you can see the factory in action. This game however the battle arena looks boring and bland but the boss looks amazing and the music fits his evil tone. It's just platforms and jumping.
Hey! Mad Jack is awesome. You here me? AWESOME!!!! Granted he is easy. Anyways I wonder if Nintendo will give him a comeback in the new Donkey Kong game ( If there is gonna be a new game, that is)

I never said I hated the boss just the arena you fight him in.
That scared me when I was 8 years old to the point I wasn't able to sleep for the night.

Mad Jack is a big step up in difficulty from the first two bosses. He’s divided into two phases, the jumping phase, and the attack phase. The jumping phase gets faster and faster the more damage you do to him. After enough jumps he’ll pop out to attack, Hit the switch that corresponds to whatever color tile he’s currently standing on during the attack phase, if you hit the wrong color switch it’ll damage you instead. If you fall off the tiles at any time you won’t die, but it will reset the jumping phase and you must do it over again
I can literally feel myself playing this as I watch 😃 I love the nostalgia

Yeah in the guide they said that it says a lot about him that got rejected from K. Rool's incredibly unsafe and evil toys.

Mad Jack was voiced by Clarence Nash!!! Clarence Nash was the original voice of Donald Duck. Various Donald Duck sound clips were used for Mad Jack because Clarence Nash died 13 years before this game was released.

Levels and characters like this are nightmare fuel especially if your a kid.
I want to know who thought this would be a Good Idea, to make Mad Jack as a Boss Fight, in a game Marketed to Kids.
I mean seriously, his design was Nightmare fuel for kids, and possibly still could be.
You gotta teach the kids that fear's a thing. They can't go around thinking everything's perfectly alright their whole lives. Sometimes it's just OK to be scared, because you probably have someone to reassure you that everything's just peachy. And besides, fear's a way of telling you about self-defense.

I remember back when I first saw this fight at a birthday party, I could have sworn the fight was intenser with a higher rez in graphics and movement as well as there being a lot more red flashing in the background.

I'm going to be honest this boss as well as the pufferfish, the giant billboard of King K. Rool, and the first encounter of the armadillo fights creeped me out as a kid because of the location the fight was in.
One of the scariest bosses I ever faced. I'm glad he turned invisible.
As far as I remember, the Box can’t jump diagonally, but Tiny can.

Imagine playing Donkey Kong 64 at the age of 5/6 (late 1999, early 2000) my mom bought me a nintendo and i never knew what to expect, i don't knew english (I'm from Portugal) and at that time english was only learned in school at age of 10, was hard to complete the game but after i guess it was 2 years I did it. Great atmosphere in the game, was the first game that gave me really nice emotions and frightened me a bit, i guess that's what made it so memorable. forever one of my favourite games! :)
Me and two other people were just playing this game (me for the first time in years) and I had to fight this same boss. Dude is freaking fast. We were all on the edge of our seats and yelling every time I fell off the platforms. Lol.
I'm glad I played this game when I was older. Because if I had played this back in, say, 2003, I would be frightened to the point of refusing to watch any animations featuring Donald Duck because this guy would've given me Donald Duck Phobia and the way he _looks_ and the scary laughter in the music and... _UGH!!_
Also, hard to believe _this guy_ was listed among K.Rool's biggest and most feared soldiers.
Some say he was rejected because he was too unsafe for the factory. At least that's what the strategy guides say.

I have fun memories of playing this game all the time when I was in high school back in 1999-2001 (when I should have been sleeping/studying, haha). A couple things I noticed are that your first clue about how dangerous Mad Jack is is that he was rejected for being unsafe even by whatever safety standards a Kremling toy factory would have. Second, the battle arena with the factory buttons looks like a giant disco floor (and you do kind of "dance" around the arena in a sense). Third, the camera angle problem is solved by staying in the middle four if possible.
God this thing petrified me when I was a kid.
It was a huge accomplishment for me when I was finally able to conquer my fear of him.
Here's a little known fact, at least one I've never heard anybody talk about. If you fall off and are brought back on the corner, there's a chance Jack will only flip once guaranteeing a hit. This can only happen if he is next to the next two available platforms. You have to wait until he jumps first, otherwise if you jump, he will trick you and hit you immediately. He killed me like that and I'm still salty. He's sneaky and can easily catch you by surprise with that move if you aren't careful.
Also some trivia: Mad Jack was supposed to throw flaming toy blocks and not fireballs. This was changed last second, giving us the attack we encounter now.
This boss' laugh reminds me of Mark Hamill's Joker. ...I'M CRAZY FOR IT!!! 8-D

Normally when MadJack appears, the music kicks off. However this was run on an emulater that appears to have an audio delay.

It happens, DK 64 has numerous bugs. I was surprised when I looked years later on RUclips that other people's videos of Mad Jack their music starts right away. But I've had the opposite happen with ArmyDillo second fight where the music starts early sometimes and other times doesn't until he actually comes out of his armor.
I don't actually use emulators except Nintendo's virtual console.

Not that I've seen. It tends to occur in emulators for PC and even Nintendo's own VC service.
@@YowLife It very well might on those versions but I can say with 100% certainty that this video was played on an actual N64 using a DVD recorder and Pinnacle Video Transfer Capture Card. I still remember making it 13 years ago.

Anyone else actually thought the second phase was easier? The laser is easier to predict since it just hits the block you're currently on. When you hear that sort of exhaling sound, be at the edge of the block and jump.
Help Tiny defeat Mad Jack. Watch out for fireballs, lasers, and the electric shockwave.
The fucking heart attack ten year old me got when i got to the last phase of this boss. This shit was hard. And to this day, i struggle with this boss sometimes, but a heart attack isn't one of them.

Since I noticed that Clarence Nash (voice of Donald Duck)'s archival recordings voiced Mad Jack. I bet if Mad Jack returns in the future Donkey Kong games, he'll be voiced by "Tony Anselmo (the current voice of Donald Duck)"!

This boss was so difficult to defeat as a kid. Still remember surprisingly, when he does his introduction and he does his evil laughter. That scared me as a kid not traumatize.
