I always thought it was weird that videos like this never mentioned the snake boss. Being one of the things that really stuck out to me when reading the cutting room floor, I thought they would at least give it a small mention. Thank you for finally revealing this to so many people that don’t know about it!
23:28 That’s actually the Lightfish, a new animal buddy who does appear in DK64 during any section in Gloomy Galleon where you go into a ship underwater.
Sorry about that! Seems myself (and my source) forgot this creature was already in the game. I'll make a note here in the pinned comment. Thanks for that!
Wow I never knew of the Snake Boss that was originally planned. Honestly I think that would’ve fit the theme of the map a lot better than what we had in the final version. One of my only complaints with this game is the repeating of boss battles for certain enemies like Dogando and Armydillo. The idea of connecting various games together through the Stop and Swap feature may have had some great potential if it had been used for extra content such as possibly playing as Banjo in multiplayer with his own unique abilities as opposed to having players require both games to complete a portion of the story which would’ve proved tedious. Regardless another quality video as always sir!! I can’t wait to see what content you will find with the Donkey Kong Country series!

Wonderful video. Both part 1 and 2 were very interesting while I was aware of some of the cut content like the usage of real guns and miyamotos reaction lol you provided alot of information I wasn't aware of which blew me away. DK 64 always had a mystique to me mainly because I never actually owned the game growing up. I grew up in the era where renting games was the way to go if you couldn't afford a new title. So my experience was just from renting this game on and off and even the idea of having to use the expansion pack I found so cool. I never got to beat it when it came out. It wasn't until the 2010s after high school I revisited this game and actually beat it surrounded by great friends. I felt so fulfilled since it was basically a childhood checkmark of mine. Thanks for taking me down memory lane looking forward to more videos!
Thank you! I actually was in a very similar boat. I kept renting this game for a while as a kid but then eventually bought it as an adult and played it properly. Glad you enjoyed it and were able to get a good nostalgic feel from it.
Watching this made me think how awesome a N64 Mini would be. Including DK64, Banjo-Kazooie, Super Mario 64, Diddy Kong Racing, Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time / Majora's Mask, and other classics would be amazing!
We missed out on such a unique feature with Stop 'N' Swap. I mean, I know it was a little unconventional the method they were trying to use for it, but with how we can save our games now, a Stop 'N' Swap would be possible in this day.
Actually, the Snake bosses room is deleted in the kiosk demo (where the footage of those objects is taken). A few cheat codes are used to force load Army Dillo's room to prevent the game from crashing.
Not that it wouldv'e fixed the main problems with the game, but i think a GREAT role to give the Animal Buddies would be fast travel: say at the peak or outskirts of a world you can hit switches that activate animal buddy crates in main areas of the levels, then you can ride the Rhino or Ostrich OR Swordfish for underwater and simply rush through areas youv'e already been: cut down the tedium of meandering around quite a lot
@@TheObsessiveGamer I know this will never happen but imagine if one day, Nintendo and Rare get together and release special editions of BK, BT, DK64. All three including cut content, including Stop and Swap!

Yeah, Stop 'n Swop was a neat idea, but having kids swap out cartridges like that is just asking for trouble. 😅 I hope at some point, someone from the N64 modding community creates a hack of Donkey Kong 64 that incorporates some of these cut ideas back into the game.

THANK YOU for going super in depth of DK64 (cut content, beta, etc.)! I keep seeing so many videos that skip a ton of stuff that I've only ever heard mentioned, but was never shown or talked about. Somehow, It's a game that has fascinated me for years and what it could have been too. I never knew that Puftoss was also going to be a Fungi Forest boss. I always thought it was going to be that weird giant Bug creature. Also never even knew about the Snake boss. There was a lot here and it was awesome to see this! Btw, it would be awesome if you covered Jet Force Gemini (if you haven't already). 😉 Always wanted to know why RARE couldn't finish the Abandoned Space Station level as there is an empty door at the end. And much more. Haha.
Thank you too! I am surprised how pretty much no one has went this deep into it prior. Glad I could bring it all together. Though the information was quite scattered so this video was quite an undertaking that I wasn't expecting haha. I personally wanna go through every Rare N64 game with this as the opener here. Jet Force Gemini would be on that list at some point too as planned.
Great video. I didn't know almost any of this stuff especially the snake boss and mini mad jacks were interesting. This game always gave me an eerie vibe more than Banjo Kazooie or any other N64 game, and the creepy test levels just add to this.
So most of those "test rooms" except for the one that you can access at Snides are actually the remaining objects left in the kiosk loaded with a different map for example the armadillo boss fight map. Also in the kiosk to save on memory they deleted all the geometry for the levels and sub areas but kept the objects.
That would make quite a bit of sense actually as to why the same map was used there. It could then mean that the original temple map was still there with the torches too (even if the mermaid and zinger were now there too)
Army Dillo from Donkey Kong 64 (1999) is an armadillo boss like Armored Armadillo from Mega Man X (1994) and Sillydillo from Kirby and the Forgotten Land (2022).
I never knew about the snake boss in Aztec, and that the flames were leftover from that. 23:35 that just looks like a much larger version of the fish that lights up the sunken ship areas in Galleon.
Yeah interesting way that the test room as actually an old boss room eh? Also yeah the lantern fish was that. Seems my source and myself forgot about that haha. I did already add that in my pinned fix notes
Not only was it a weird game, it also left a lot to the imagination with its mysterious level designs, I also used to have dreams about this game as a child.
If you think about the bosses, there was a lot of pedophilia innuendos and fetishes. The army dillo's nose was phallic and it would shock itself in the head (almost like it liked it), the flying thing always followed you around and tried to harass you, the puffer fish loved being shocked like BDSM, when you beat King K Rool, you beat him by hurting his toes (foot fetish), and that jack in the box was also a pedophile as well (wanting to harm young Kongs). The whole game was sick!
@@wewhoareabouttodiesaluteyo9303 A lot of those are super obscure, i don’t believe there was any intention there. Other than the K. Rool one, that seems somewhat strange. However, armydillo’s nose is well, a nose. Its soft like any nose and is gonna wobble. It got shocked in the head due to the shell malfunctioning. Dogadon is literally a boss, he’s meant to attack you. I don’t see how he’s harassing the player. Puftoss did not look like he was enjoying being shocked. Its an electric gate meant to damage him to progress the fight, what else? Mad Jack wants to harm the player because he’s a bad guy. Again, same reason as dogadon. He’s K rool’s minion, his job is to try and stop the kongs. He threw fireballs and lasers, seems like any fiction boss to me. There were only weird things going on with Candy kong and the mermaid. @@skeleton819 Then throw in Tiny Kong and have her fight these bosses (particularly the Jack in the Box with an eye patch, basically a creepy pedophile). Idk..I think they made it very clear that something was going on in this game. Why not make bosses where gates do not electrocute them (this was one of the few games that did this)? There are many other ways to show that a boss is being damaged by a player. Army Dillo or any creature for that matter, it is highly unlikely that it would keep something on itself especially when it electrocutes its brain, cranial region (like that is just a gross way of portraying harm). I mean these are things they do not show you on t.v., for even adults, because it is just so wrong. It is almost like a PG version of something that should be rated R.

Stop n swap didn't have you power your console down, I thought. You quickly swapped cartridges within a less than 10 second time, while the data for the first game was still in memory. Turning off the console would've just reset the memory
No it required you to power it down as keeping it on would actually damage your cartridge. The idea was that the RAM would retain it for 30 seconds after you shut down the console. Problem was that Nintendo was also making a revision where it would clear out the RAM quicker. If kept on, the RAM wouldn't actually lose the memory its keeping at the time unless you do something ingame change that.
