Called in at Dickies this week, Steel Melody still there as you left her, drop keel still under the hull awaiting refitting. No signs of rust on the paintwork, looked quite tidy actually
First of all happy birthday Melissa! Then about the trip, in hindsight its always easy to know what you could have done better. But you coped will with the problems and the ship took the pretty big waves easy it seemed. I loved the dolphin or (bruinvis they call it here, brownfish can't be the english name .. ) its nice to see some sea shots, the previous video showed the tidal flows in the channel, I couldn't believe how strong that was. Now because of the tides big waves.. the sea always seems so .. flat and sometimes with waves, but in reality it's an ever changing environment depending on a load of factors. Its always fun to see Jack, he smiles a lot so he is having fun I think :-) I wish I would be allowed by my parents to sail the family ship at that age.. (we didn't have a ship and learned to sail from a good friend when I was well past the age of Jack) I think with all the difficulties in the past and the stress you made the very right decision to go on and follow the dream you both had.. it's gonna make a great adventure for Jack, a unbelievable start of the life of Ollie and a great life for you both. I wonder how the stress levels of you both are now, I know it's a ever going around thing in your head about how to keep financing it all.. but I think with steel melody gone, and you out on the sea most of the big things have gone.
Happy Birthday Melissa, I loved your Milford Haven stay in late May, we were in the same berth that you had which was tricky getting in. Not nearly as tricky as the lock which appeared to me to be not much bigger than us. We are heading south soon so hopefully we will catch-up to you, happy to show you over our Oyster 56. I used to have a rival (bowman) 38. Love your videos, sail safe.
All great experience - I learnt some significant practical skippering lessons on the Bristol Channel. Getting the confidence to raise and lower sails in the sheltered, but some times more confined waters of a harbour or river will make a big difference to your sailing comfort, especically when you have to work halyards at the mast.
@@SailingMelody nice to see you have made it to Falmouth. Would have said hello but not sure if you were around - we only stopped into the Haven for fish and chips while we waited for the tide to get back to our berth upriver!
Well done, a Champagne navigation and another lemon, that's the sea, that's life, ups and downs, good days and bad days, WHAT WE MUST BE CLEAR IS TO SEE THE GOOD SIDE OF ALL THINGS. P.S. Oyster is the best of British sporting naval architecture, a Jewel, but big ships, big problems. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I must say your dog house looks smashing on ocean Melody. Not often you see a diy solution blend in that good on an old boat. Thanks for taking us along on your journey. 🙂
Melissa, I am only a few seconds in and I didn’t even know it was your birthday until I just started typing this. But I’ve said it before and I will say it again you are a very beautiful young lady. Your husband is a very blessed man.
I thought it was an exciting journey. Motoring in dead calm is boring. I realise that having a youngster sick is no fun (especially for him), but it's part of the life you've chosen. Another good film and you've more than done your bit for Welsh tourism. Happy birthday Melissa.
Hello Andy. The yacht with the curved doghouse in Milford Marina, the SY484 Dancing Queen was designed by Bosgraaf Yacht Design en built by Vels Jachtbouw in Medemblik in the Netherlands.
Glad you got the autopilot. They are excellent if greedy on power. Don't do what i did, i.e forget to isolate the engine starter battery from house power 😱. Gosh that was an expensive and embarrassing mistake. Lesson learned, autopilot on, generator on.
Happy birthday Melissa, great to have an extra episode. Spicey conditions but you dealt with what was thrown at you. As sailors we have to continually adapt to conditions, weather and you guys did exactly that. They are not mistakes just learning experiences. Take care and hope,to maybe see you when you hit the South West, not literally though I hope. Andy UK
Great watching you enjoying the sailing after knowing the background of the boat. Nice to hear about the learning curve too, Overall really great video thanks 😊
This is a must see episode as these seasoned sailors rough violent and horrible sea conditions ( 1meter) on the Bristol Channel. Commercial traffic is notorious here and thus Andy navigates with extreme caution. HAPPY BIRTHDAY Melissa, marvelous editing and we loved Ollies new bunk cushions.
What I like to do in those conditions is to roll out a bit of the jib. It provides that extra bit of stability and drive that you wanted from the main.
Personally I would have removed the centre line whilst the lock was emptying, that then just leaves you with two lines to worry about. Crew does the bow line, helm can pull in the stern line whilst crew shoves the bow off, then let go and motor. When coming in, centre line first, crew comes aft on the pontoon and helm passes the stern line to the crew already on the pontoon, helm then goes forward, takes the bowline and does that.
to me sailing is like the old saying a bad day fishing is better than a good day at work. some of my favorite sailing days were heeling way over and big swells water spray all that stuff. that said i didn't have a baby on board. simi scary uncomfortable sailing is something that some people enjoy.
Hope you had an awesome Birthday Melissa. I am so surprised at how big Ollie has got. So glad you guys are getting things sorted out with boat life. You guys look fantastic. Best regards from South Africa
My first sailing boat was a Snapdragon 23. A fair bit more squeezed than a '24 but still was a super safe boat that though not very 'pointy' inspired supreme confidence. Cracking little thing that cost peanuts. 😎
Happy Birthday, Melissa. 🎉 As the owner of a ketch, may I put in a word for the Mizzen? If you set the Mizzen it’ll steady your rolling. And it’s a really useful and highly versatile option …. if you experiment, you’ll come to love it in all kinds of situations, especially where you might not want the Main. Sail well, guys! 😊
Hey a rough passage is a good learning experience and gives you an idea as to crew dynamics. Good slop always give ya a run for ya money. Great to see Jack getting Helm time😅. It is nice to see you all getting into relaxing sailing mode into the Groove. Happy Arrival on the Planet day Melissa ya smile is infectious.😅😂❤ Be well now and let's be chillaxing then.😅😮😂❤
Great video love the fact you’re sailing a lot more still like it when you’re doing jobs aboard the boat lovely genuine family Chanel well done to you all 😊
Hindsight is a wonderful thing! Nobody learns anything without getting out there and doing and that means mistakes get made. Plenty uncomfortable but never dangerous i would guess and happy birthday btw. Biggest issue was Ollie finding his tolerance for seasickness, again as a parent not nice but not dangerous. Well done.
4:30 The Westerly Centaur was my parent's 1st sail boat. I totaly agrre with you as a 1st boat, Excellent boat. Not a race machine but rugged, forgiving and extremely well build. Actualy I've learned to sail and navigate on her. And BTW, their 2nd sail boat was a Westerly 36, regular mono keel,, like the one beside the Snapdragon you noticed, but with a ketch rigging. A marvelous ship. I realy hope these 2 ships are still sailing with their current owners.
Happy Birthday Just a thought. When I sail with my wife I let her do the helm and I do the lines when docking undocking etc Makes it much easier on them Just an idea
Happy birthday Melissa!! Another voyage under your collective belts, well done! A suggestion, if I may - I’ve noticed that you’re using braided lines for mooring warps which do tend to snatch if there’s any swell or wash when along side. You may like to consider rubber snubbers to alleviate the shock loads, or, even better, change your mooring warps over to 3 strand. It has far better stretch properties and is easier on the boat, plus it’s much quieter when you’re onboard. All in all, another great episode, keep up the fantastic content!
on my boat i rigged e very thing for cockpit helm single handed sailing, its not necessary to leave cockpit except for spinnaker and headsails roller reefing, expensive to set up but worth it for safety and ease in bad weather.
