  • Daniel Suelo lives in caves in the canyonlands of Utah. He survives by harvesting wild foods and eating roadkill.
    He has no job, no bank account and does not accept government welfare. In fact, Suelo has no money at all.
    Suelo may have shunned all the trappings of modern American life, but he is not an isolationist.
    Since abandoning money in 2000, the former cook from Moab, Utah has remained an active member of his community and avid blogger.
    Mark Sundeen, author of The Man Who Quit Money, admits many people would regard Suelo's alternative lifestyle as bizarre. But the 2008 financial crash has led many to question the value of money. He explains some of the lessons found in Suelo's philosophy.

    The love of money has become greater than the love for others. Popular sayings today are as such; "How can I help you when I have to help myself." Or "Only the strong survive".
    Serving others, even if it means sacrifice, is the path less taken. If we all worked side by side to improve humanity instead of ourselves. We would need no money.

      i help when i can all the time being on limited income does limit my ability (but when a friend needs a roof they know they got here) hell my friend needed a ride to work cause of winter so i just had him stay here for a month (he would walk to work then my dad would pick him up after) i was down the street from his job (so at least the walk there was during sunlight) i spent my teen yrs helping my neighbor (i learned so much from him too) elderly neighbor of mine. he did pay tho he wouldnt take no for an answer (he has strong belief in u pay for the work a person did) only times he did was when we did volunteer work and thats to be expected.... would cook chili for knights of columbus during christmas time when they sold trees (also was a tree unloader for them too) even tho i dont like churches i still helped them as well... he was a church goer.. so i would help setup and cook for them as well.. my other neighbor i helped his daughters private church school run a fair... i might not like religion but still they want to have fun as well like i do! sorry for long post (ive spent most of my life helping folks so figure at least let ya know we do exist still!

  • @JB-fw3pm
    @JB-fw3pm 7 лет назад +46

    Just a thought..
    I'm choosing to deliberately live the rest of my life with as little money as possible.
    What does that accomplish?
    "The System" survives off of our desire for more. We willfully enslave ourselves to corporations and individuals for the reward of money. That money is then spent to buy food, clothing, and shelter.. oh yeah, and stuff.
    But what if we didn't buy stuff? We didn't have mortgages and vehicle payments and debt in general. What would happen if we didn't give away a good chunk of our paychecks each week to the Gov for the privilege of just simply living?
    You see, "The System" operates much like a prison system does. The more inhabitants the prison has, the more money it receives from the government to take care of those prisoners. Except, we are the ones paying for our own imprisonment. The more of us there are working and paying taxes, the more money the Gov gets from us in the form of taxes. And why should we give up anything that is ours so a bunch of politicians and their families can live the rest of their lives without worrying about money. WE ARE THE ONES GIVING IT TO THEM!!..
    The only way to kill this Beast is to starve it. We do that by not participating in their programs, their jobs, their oil, their food. Don't you see? It has become a high crime nowadays to live freely off of the land. They won't bother you much if your paying land taxes, electricity and water, internet bills, have a car payment and financed your "off-grid" castle. But let me tell you something. THE GOVERNMENT OWNS NOTHING. To own something means it is yours, you created it, and have the right to give it away or sell it. Land is not one of those things. The world was designed to be shared not fought over and stolen like a bunch of ungrateful children.
    MONEY IS THE FUEL THAT FEEDS YOUR ENSLAVEMENT. It isn't worth it...

    Some days I think this, just how, as humans, we have this ability to understand the world, the resources we have, the means, how to build, create, and destroy.. but all of it is measured in money, and people starve and die, because of not having money.
    It takes a brave man to survive in a world that can't live beyond such a means.

  • @WizzRacing

    Money is an illusion. You ever ask yourself why you work to earn money? The answer is to buy stuff that you want or need. You can get those without money!
    Besides you don't own anything. You spend half you life getting stuff and the other half getting rid of it as my grand parents told me. So don't get caught up in buying stuff. You won't miss it when its gone. What you should do is be happy with what you have and hope to enjoy it with others. In the end you're not taking any of it with you when the grim ripper comes to claim his reward.

Also, he might be avoiding the garden because if he planted on the land they might arrest him for it, it could be he's trying to live as well as he can without running afoul of corrupt laws. He should toss his bike, cooking pots, glasses, bedsheets and all other economically derived material possessions. Do not accept discarded food or handouts as they too are products of the economy. Cut through the new age propaganda, he’s simply a homeless person eschewing reality for the sake of a parasitic lifestyle.

    To those saying "those things cost money at some point! He's just bumming!" or whatever, you realize that those things originally came from the Earth and cost NOTHING, right? The Earth creates enough to provide for all of us. He only is taking things that are wasted, but if there was no money and no bins to dive, he'd still be taking from the Earth. Many people live moneyless and refuse to take from anything that ever cost money -- including waste and gifts from others. They live off the land. And the land has enough to support everyone. Just because a select few hoard food and resources and force you to slave for money in order to have things you need doesn't mean the resources themselves are scarce. The scarcity is artificial. If they were scarce, there wouldn't be waste for people like Mr. Suelo to be digging through. Grocery store shelves would be empty and some people would just be out of luck. There is abundance. Look around you. There's more to buy than people to buy it. That's why we throw it out. If no one used money or worked for money, that stuff wouldn't go away. Just the illusion of its scarcity.

    • @fishblades
      @fishblades 10 лет назад

      You really need to read Wealth of Nations. You don't seem to understand the concept of adding value, or work. Or rising cost adding to the price, which you seem to call "scarcity"
      I don't want to wander around in a forest trying to find an onion because I want to make spaghetti, let alone the other 15 or so ingredients. Other people have already done the work for me. They have done it more efficiently and better than I ever could have. That service has a value.

    • @thaaohanshew5458
      @thaaohanshew5458 10 лет назад +2

      fishblades That "value" is a social construct. It is not intrensic. The value only exists because someone said it existed, and other people believed that. It's not quanitfiable outside of this construct. It cannot be measured physically. It is completely imaginary. Certainly, as long as people agree upon its value, it can work as a system, but that doesn't mean that this "value" is somehow definite or intrensic. I understand the rules and qualities of money and money economies -- but to think it's the only type of economy that can exist and is somehow natural and unchangable is absurd.

    • @MrValentas
      @MrValentas 10 лет назад +1

      fishblades Society would live and thrive if there would not be parasitic elite making people life more miserable every day. Capitalism would never fail if everyone played honestly. In real capitalism there would be very very fierce competition to provide best product and the price would go down. Projects such as kickstarter helps to fund some capitalistic ideas out there completely by public. It adds value. However, nothing will change in the world until people drop the shackles and start leading themselves. Firsly, one should 'come clean': examine who you are banking with, where do you buy food and whether these companies are benefiting humanity or are they in bed with elite guys. Then adjust your habits accordingly. Would you bank with HSBS who launder drug money? I wouldn't. I try to shop in local markets for my fruits, veggies and usually pay cash. I don't buy from amazon because it is cheaper. Instead, I pay 2 bucks more for mom and pop business and contribute towards true value. The man in the video shows an example of courage and freeing your mind from all propaganda you are fed. So, value is created everywhere but you must consider who will benefit humanity and who is destroying it.
      Markets would never collapse if people would take back the control. So one mind at a time. Even if you pay more for your groceries or electronics in local business do it. Don't feed the corporation that drains you and your fellow citizens.

      K Simpson I refuse to pay child support in the title IV-D handbook that is the child support act created by the government it says it is a voluntary program that they violate by saying it's a law when in fact it's a voluntary program, the thing is states like to say it's a law and enforce it because they get $63 for every $1 they collect from me from the government for their social service programs. Title 4-D says I have to enter into the contract willingly it also says that no one can profit when working with child support decisions. Most people have never read the handbook and are ignorant to their rights when I went to court for child support I didn't sign anything I told the judge to go to f--king hell, I said I had a child to raise a child not to pay some unfaithful whore my money, I also told him my daughter when done with school with her mother will come live with me and repeat every grade of school from k-12 so I get my parenting time or she will have no future in this world. I have told child support agents who send me notices their addresses and how many kids they have their husbands names they question how I found this out I tell them it doesn't matter f with me and I will do the same. Needless to say they are scared of me they know I know how to make poisons, explosives like HMTD, they know I have a military background and all this scares the hell out of them, my ex wife's attorney is even scared of me he knows I'm coming for him the judge is scared of me also, police are scared I have my house ridged to electrify them if they touch my door 220v through a transformer to 480v, my vehicle is rigged with a pressurized tank to shoot napalm (flame thrower) police do not bother me. Make them know you can eliminate them at any time and they leave you alone.

      I'll not pass judgment on the guy simply because, none of us know what led to the events in his life. I'll say this much, though: The courts are biased and sexist against men and that's a fact that can never be disputed. Another indisputable fact, is that there is zero accountability on what the mother does with funds she receives from child support.

      there should be some sort of fund that funnels the financial resources into the childs development only in order to prevent a parent from taking advantage of the funds. i don't know, like a gym pass to a martial arts school or dance school, or a tuition of some sort to an art or technical school of his/her choice. something. two people bring life into this fucking world, they better both be active participants in the rearing of that child directly or indirectly. or stop having fucking accidents. selfish fuckers.

      Your brother is not alone. It's only a matter of time and these guys will fight back. The American government is starting a war with their own citizens and men aren't just going to keep going along with having their children kidnapped and being forced to pay and not even get to have their own kids. Thats the point where most men don't have anything else to live for anyway and are willing to give their lives to fight. I certainly wouldn’t be working if they could take my money from my check and if they put out a warrant I would prepare for war! If they were going to keep locking me up anyway they wouldn't take me alive and I would take out as many that tried to catch me as I could until I was dead even if I had to strap a bomb to myself. They already took my kids and then they're going to take my money and my freedom? Fuck that! Thats a call to war for me! Give me my freedom or give me death!

While this man's life looks (almost) romantic, back-to-basics life, the fact is that we cannot go back to that extent. He is dependent on other people's money. I hunt using a bow I made myself, made from Black Locust, and strung using the fibers from a Yucca plant. I use EVERY part of the animals that I kill, to respect them(For example, I made gloves from a rabbit.)
    I even make paints and pottery. Going into the wilderness like this sure opens your eyes.

    Money is the tokens rich people give out to make everyone have to play their game, their way. If you are lucky you can turn the tables and get ahead and become one of those rich people, but the odds are most will not, and many will be killed or enslaved in some way by this inhuman system. I couldn't live like this, but I think this guy has courage and in his own way is taking life on his own terms ... which is more than most of the slaves to our system do.

    If you have to resort to digging out of dumpsters then you have no life at all. This man chooses to live the life of a bum, and he still has to depend upon others to throw the right food trash away for him to eat because he's afraid of work, and that's all there is to it, plus he has to take money hand outs from others to survive. Having no place to bathe other then Public Facilities or a stream is no freedom at all,, this man has created a bondage unto himself. Life is full of responsibilities and it doesn't matter what kind of life you choose to live, you still have to do something to get something in return. This man has to get up and go search through dumpsters so he can survive, the same goes for the working man he has to get up every morning to receive something in return or he will not survive.. No body is making him eat out of that dumpster it's his own free will to do so. That's what happens to you when you refuse to believe in a God to provide.. Filthy corporations you call them.. The only reason they picked up and left in the first place is Politicians gave them that right away to do so.. The rich is what places politicians into office, they've also given themselves exemption to know inside trading secretes where Martha Stewart went to jail for.. Judges for example most likely receive information from their politician friends to know where to invest. These same judges put people behind bars for the very same thing that they are guilty of themselves.. Corruption is every where my friend.. In the US. The rich politicians start with the Democrats then trickles down to the Republicans. Their Goal is to let the rich become richer and the middle class to become poorer, what they call equality.. I call it manipulation at it's best

Led by ignorance, selfishness, lack of compassion, fuelled by greed and lack of respect for human equality and human rights - MY RICHES.

      I'm not going to get in a debate over this man. He has chosen his way of life, it's called freewill. No body made him the way that he is, he has made himself the way that he is.. He has chosen to dig through garbage cans and at times beg for a hand out if need be to survive..
      That isn't life at all that is bondage.. Sure people like me would give him a helping hand in a moment but that doesn't change the fact that the man is in bondage unto himself.. Every time that he digs out of a dumpster for food he's inviting death or disease. That is not life at all that is called foolishness. Proverbs 14:8 The wisdom of the prudent is to understand his way: but the folly of fools is deceit.

      The vast majority of 'unfunded obligations' will become funded. Congress only funds things very shortly into the future and it's set up that way on purpose. We do budget things further into the future but the actual Congressional Budget passed every year is when the check book is actually taken out to literally fund the budget. But not all will be funded. Or, not all will be *able* to be funded, and that is where the debt comes from. But that 'unfunded obligations' number is not just the number that will some point be added to the debt.

    • @samuelrs5138
      @samuelrs5138 6 лет назад

      There are so many misconceptions about the federal debt, I've heard them all. The US, or US citizens if you prefer to think of it that way, are their own largest holders of their debt through a process called quantitative easing.
      The benefit is that there obviously is no interest on such 'loans' and really it's not a loan at all. it's the printing of money along with specific monetary policies (low interest rates to flood investment into the economy) Eventually, interest rates will be raised and the money that's put back into the Fed by it's reserve banks will be used to deflate the currency. It will actually be beneficial to the average American in a way, with real wages increasing without actually increasing the amount of $'s they're being paid, but the economy itself will slow down.
      Another part is who's to blame and what is actually happening. Though 95% of Americans will blame either Bush or Obama, reallly it's Reagan and Clinton with their deregulations that set the 2008 housing crisis into motion. At first it was Enron, then Exxon, then the Lehman Brothers then Fannie and Freddie then came Dodd-Frank. The Iraq war didn't help, but that was just shitty timing.
      The US federal budget deficit (basically the amount that goes unfunded every year and into the debt) rose drastically the last few years under Bush to a total of $1.6 trillion in 2008-09. Under Obama, it lowered every single year to about $600 billion in it's last. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, some progress is being made. but it'll get harder with Baby Boomers aging. And now Millenials are being forced to pay for something, SOcial Security, that we probably won't get. And Millenials are now America's most populous generation, beating out the Baby Boomers at about 90 million total. So we're going to have to figure out something for the next generation after finally taking over from the Boomers who haven't seen to do much good for America and don't really seem to care what's left over for their own children, let alone leave us with a plan.

    Dear Editor:
    Have you read the book, The Man Who Quit Money? I have. It was written by a man from Missoula, Montana, Mark Sundeen. In TMWQM, Mark Sundeen writes about Daniel Suelo who, supposedly, lives in a cave outside of Moab, Utah, without any income at all, using no money, of his own freewill, and survives! This is far from the truth. Daniel often goes to the public library in Moab to use the Internet. Daniel often hitches rides here and there using the public road and a Good Samaritan’s fuel. However, Daniel does not consider these activities as using money, even though he is consuming a public goods (library computer and Internet) and private goods (the Good Samaritan’s car and fuel.) Daniel Suelo has some mumbo-jumbo philosophy that allows him to consume all public goods and any private goods from “friends” as long as he accepts with gratitude. Let me make this clear: In Daniel Suelo’s mind, all the people in the world can live freely, as long as we give to one another and accept with gratitude. What a bunch of malarkey! If a person uses a public good (a road, the library, attending a museum, whatever), then that person is using money. This isn’t up for debate. Yes, the money is tax-payers’ money so the money is being consumed indirectly, in the form of taxes, but money is being consumed nonetheless. And, anyone who accepts “gifts” from others (private goods from “friends”) is still CONSUMING, even if he or she accepts with gratitude. Daniel Suelo cannot see these truths. Daniel Suelo still insists he uses no money. Thus, Daniel Suelo is delusional. Also, Daniel Suelo often “house sits” for friendly supporters, using their home, sleeping in their beds and eating their food while his supporters are elsewhere. But, according to Daniel, he is not using any money. Remember, this consumption is allowed, as long as he accepts with gratitude. Suelo’s delusional mind should be clear to rational people. What is terrible and very troubling is that Daniel Suelo, along with the help of writer Mark Sundeen, is spreading this delusional malarkey to other people. In effect, Daniel Suelo and Mark Sundeen are lying to these people, enticing these innocent and gullible individuals to give up the striving of life, to leave the money system, to live like the great one, Daniel Suelo, the prophet, free of money. This is disgusting. Daniel Suelo is an egomaniac perpetrating his myth into weak and impressionable people, not only in the USA but around the world. Why? Why do you think? To get a following. Once on his Facebook page, Daniel Suelo said that he remembers when he was five years old, standing in his crib, holding onto the bars. There, in that moment, he had a vision, a vision that said he was going to be a LEADER OF A MOVEMENT. Ha! I am not making this stuff up. It is there. Go to his FB page and research it. You might have to go back some time, circa spring 2013. Anyway, really, who sees such visions at five years old? Budding egomaniacs; that’s who, maybe a David Koresh. In writing his sympathetic biography of Daniel Suelo, TMWQM, Mark Sundeen has not only endorsed Daniel Suelo’s lies but romanticized his lifestyle and encouraged others to attempt to live thus, to attempt to live free of money. The writer Mark Sundeen knew and associated with Daniel Suelo BEFORE the writing of his book, TMWQM. This leads one to believe that Mark Sundeen knew good and well that Suelo’s ideas would be appealing to many, and this appeal would make Mark Sundeen much money. How ironic?!!! Mark Sundeed writes a book about a prophet who lives his life without money in order to make money for himself!! Now, I am not some Ayn Rand, selfish tea-bagger. I have been a lifelong liberal and understand the incredibly difficult path to becoming financially secure in this life. Even in today’s modern world, equality and opportunity are still myths. One’s birth is the greatest indicator of financial success, a greater indicator than ambition or even IQ. Nearly half of the world’s population lives on less than two dollars a day. About 40 percent of the USA population lives from one paycheck to the other. Considering these dismal truths, I would love for a human being to be able to live without money, to live in a beautiful utopian world, to live as John Lennon once sang in his song IMAGINE: nothing to kill of die for, with no heaven above us, no hell below, no possessions, in a brotherhood of man. Ha! Yea, John Lennon was a dreamer, beautiful, but a dreamer nonetheless. That life is just not going to happen. Even in the old Soviet Union the idea was not to live completely without money. Vladimir Lenin and Leon Trotsky were not that stupid, so stupid to try to pull such a ridiculous idea over the heads of the people. Can you imagine Vladimir Lenin saying: “We can live free! Using no money!” The people would not have been deceived. So, Lenin and Trotsky told a partial live. “We can live equal!” This partial lie didn’t turn out too well, even though North Korea and Cuba (not China) are still continuing with such pretense. The world is rough, and this rough world is established on money. Money is the proof that we are physical beings. Money is proof that our existence is not only spiritual, as the prophet Daniel Suelo would like to convince people, people whom he hopes will become his new disciples. Once again, let me be very clear: An utopian society of life-without-money is complete BULLSH@#. There will never be a way to live COMPLETELY without money. If you use public goods, then you are using money indirectly. If you “house sit,” you are using someone else’s money. Sure, there are minimalist, people who choose to live with the bare essentials, (remember Henry David Thoreau), and there are people who just glean off of society, people whom John Lenin’s buddy, Paul McCartney, might have been referring to when Paul sang: got a good reason, for taking the easy way out… These people don’t bother me, either one, the minimalist or the person who has sort of just checked out. I understand they are fed up with the money system. However, do not lie to me and say you live with NO MONEY! In his book TMWQM, author Mark Sundeen did not ask any real difficult questions to Daniel Suelo. Sundeen was definitely not working as an objective journalist or and objective biographer. Remember, Daniel Suelo and Mark Sundeen have known each other for many years. They were friends before this book was written! Such a friendship automatically produces a biased book, a biased book in favor of Daniel Suelo’s mythical life. Sundeen’s angle was clear. He wanted to romanticize Daniel Suelo as much as he could in order to sell books. Someone in the Missoula community needs to contact Mr. Sundeen and ask him a simple question: “Do you really believe that Daniel Suelo is living without any money?” If Mark Sundeen says, yes, then Mark Sundeen is a liar. If Mark Sundeen says, no, then Mark Sundeen is knowingly glorifying a charlatan, a charlatan who is seducing young people from around the county into a fake life, a life that cannot be lived, a life where one day the convert will wake up and ask: “Why have I been wasting my life?” Of course, the prophet Daniel Suelo would say, “You are not wasting your life, you are living your life freely.” Yea, you are living your life “freely” if you can find some “friends” who will let you “house sit” during the winter months like the great guru, Daniel Suelo, does. People, do not be deceived! Do not join Daniel Seulo’s, Moneyless Tribe, his group of disciples who, day by day, are becoming just as delusional as their leader, accepting his indoctrination. The Moneyless Tribe is Daniel Suelo’s cult. Daniel Suelo’s Moneyless Tribe is not like Occupy Wall Street which was trying to bring attention to outrageous CEO pay and the corruption in the banking system. No, Daniel Suelo’s Moneyless Tribe just wants to live outside of the system, the system of money. There is a problem, NO ONE can exists COMPLETELY outside the system of money. Daniel Suelo is really a Freegan, a person who does not want to live in our consumerism society, a person who wants to glean off of the leftovers, the kind of person Beatle Paul McCartney sung about. This is fine with me. Just tell the truth. Stop with your malarkey. Stop with your lies.

      If when Daniel dies, he lies down in his cave and his body decomposes into ashes, then I am wrong. However, this will not happen. A lavish funeral that cost thousands of dollars will be purchased by his friends. This is my prophesy. Then and only then, at this lavish funeral will Suelo's hypocrisy be understood.

    People keep looking at the whole issue at too much of a complex perspective. It essentially comes down to one thing. Food and water. You have to work for those two resources regardless or you die. The monetary system was originally set up to make the transfer of goods and services simpler and easier. Instead of carrying 2 chickens under each arm to barter with, you have that $20 bill in the wallet. Yes people have abused and corrupted this system but money or not, the game has ALWAYS been about obtaining resources...

    This is a complete crock and a cop-out. I would be the first to agree that the money system is screwed, but this guy totally depends on others going to work and doing their jobs so he can pick up the leftovers. If we all lived like him, we would starve. Idealistic self-aggrandizing bullshit.

    Reading about hobos from Jack London or George Orwell, seems there was a class of hobo who had rejected being a rat on the wheel in a factory for the 19th century Industrial Revolution. London even wrote a short story on a case of a man who had a nervous break-down from factory life. Life was more difficult in some ways on the road but at the end of the day, they had more freedom and peace of mind as individuals. How did we end up in the same boat a century later?Yet in the modern world.
