You've inspired me to have a go Mark, and I'm willing to die trying because this society keeps on punishing me for being a hard-working - upstanding citizen and rewarding people for being lazy and nasty to each other. I'm tired of this way of life. It's really getting to me.

I have recently made the descision to buy some land and build an off grid cabin. Humans are the only species that pay to live on earth. I have had enough paying. Think what you could do with your life with no electric bills, water bills, gas bills, council tax bills, no rent, no mortgage.

i love the concept, just who's farm are you living on, who's land and i understand how you can barter for your clothes, and other things you may eventually need if you dont make them yourself, but who pays the taxes on the land/farm. this, unfortunately does take money and is how our society is set up. i'd love to learn more and want to be as self sufficient as possible too. thanks

deerfromot - thanks for comments. As stated, you just have to look at Asia (India) and Africa to see what a population living without money can do to the environment. Man has created deserts where jungles and forests used to thrive. Why? Animal species wiped out. Why? Take a look at the 1960's communes - living off the land. The land had to be bought or rented. All I'm saying is that resources would not permit with our present population. It is a lovely idea, all the same.

The essential difference as I see it is that with barter the agreed value of the exchange(goods or services)is subjective&depends on the individuals' needs&resources,&the interaction between members of a local community. If you've no wood ready for winter then wood represents huge value to you, less if you've prepared your own already. Currency removes that flexibility of value&trade, reducing everything. No worth in quality of life anymore, profits, quotas&units per m2 dictate the terms of our lives.

No, I do understand. If I didn't understand that money was an illusion, I'd have never spoken of the imbalance of wealth that it creates, as I did. I agree there is manipulation, and as long as money is the standard, this will perpetuate slavery of a nation. One day your house is worth 200 k. The next, 150 k. What was that 50 k to begin with? Maybe we're on the same page, here; money is merely a medium. It's sort of the same as saying guns don't kill people; people do. The people are what's bad.

If everyone tried to do this there wouldn't be a tree left standing or an animal left alive on the planet. There are many who live this way in Asia and Africa, witness the deserts etc. I would like to think that it could be done, but practically speaking this world would have to change drastically - like humans would have to be reduced in numbers.

Sounds to me like "money" is something you wish to get away from, and yet, you sit in front of your split/stacked wood through the interview. No doubt, that wood represents great value to you. If you ever intend trade your wood with an individual, then you will have "succumbed" to the thing you were trying to escape. "Money" represents work or material. When you produce, you create value; Money is the way we exchange work and materials conveniently. Removing "money" only reduces the efficiency.

@japierce15 Absolutely perfect question. It's disingenuous in the EXTREME for this man to claim he is living without the benefit of money for he (or somone, probably his parents) most certainly had to have money to buy the farm, let alone to continue to pay the property tax on said farm.

    • @welsh_vegan_allotment_holder

He doesn't live on his own land. He lives in a caravan on an organic farm which he helps out on in exchange for him staying there ( at least that's what he was doing when he became moneyless ). People should read his book/s before judging mark. He is no sponger.

When washing cloths and yourself in the stream with "soapy" stuff, you introduce abnormal levels of wetting agents and oils that become breeding grounds for an increase in bacteria and viruses down stream... Living "green" or "off grid" or "self sufficient" is more often than not, just a shift in human impact. Often, when one compares the "greenlyness" of an "offgrid/moneyless" system to normal living, the "impact" per human, on the environment, is often worse.

@TheOzTruth I completely disagree with you. Mining resources does not lead to the destruction of the world. The cure is advancement, not devolution; going forwards, not backwards. The solution lies with making the consumption of the Earth's resources less harmful, not preventing the consumption of them.

  • @tylerdurdonxx

@Happen2008 Yeah I agree. That doesnt make sense. Do you realize how many trees and water each person wastes right now? A lot more than this guy does. Plus it's not like this dude can't re-plant trees that he cuts down. And FirstSoul8, i'm not sure if you realize but this is how people used to actually live long, long ago. Before technology, television etc. people had to live off of the land. duh.

The Andromedans have high tech thousands of years ahead of us and no CONCEPT of money. No homelessness for them either. Not to mention they live literally forever (start believing)
Make no mistake, when we keep evolving technologically, free energy and free living are a must or we will sink like Atlantis. Money feels like a game you cant keep up with, cant win, and someone is always ready to throw you out if you mess up.

It truly is impossible to live without money without living off of somebody else's dollar. Every square inch of land on this planet is clamied for by some type of entity.
So yeah, you can live without money. But not without the help of a person who does live with money...

  • @cknite

Dude I've seen Alone in the wilderness many times, actually I have it on dvd. And that cabin was built on land owned by retired nave captian Spike Carrithers.
So maybe you should take your own advise and try to research before you try to correct someone. But there is no such thing as free domian land, either it's public, or private. And you can't set up shop on public land, so only was is to set up on private land that somebody had to pay for. That's just reality...

That's not true. You shouldn't say things so absolute without researching them and knowing for sure. Google Dick Proenneke. He was a vietnam veteran who went to alaska and built his own cabin and lived there for 35 years. He didn't pay for the land or anything. There is a lot of places in America where you could just build a cabin and live free of money. OR, just buy land and then live off the land without need for money. There are a lot of people in america who are self sufficient.

great, but...what the legal rights you have to occupy this piece of land? you surely cannot just put your caravan anywhere you want. In the UK you cannot even go to the wilderness and put your tent up if it is not a paid camping place. How people would send you any correspondence? post restant costs too. Imagine you have to go back to civilization and then there is no record of any work, what would you put into your CV?
You must have more problems of this kind, can you really support this way of living and ssay it brings more benefits than disadvantages like getting cold in the winter, smelly without a bathroom, lack of security etc.
    Please explain it.

one has to ponder: if "mark boyle" retreated from the adult world of responsibility and contribution for 'a few years,' how, then, is it that he's been found and then made a subject of interest for interviewing. Did someone dialup a media source (or did Mark, himself) to peddle the "romanticism of poverty and irresponsibility" as somekind of appeal to the unprepared and unskilled, uneducated and aimless youth? This smells like propaganda.
