Her father was legendary sitar musician and close friend of George Harrison, Mr. Ravi Shankar. Not only does she have the voice of an angel, she kind of looks like one, too.
Salute to Ravi Shankar, one of the greatest musicians to walk the planet. If you got 18 minutes, check out his set at the Monterey Pop Festival. You’ll see some familiar faces dumbfounded in the crowd.
Multi Grammy award winning sitar legend and composer. He was responsible for bringing the Indian influence to George Harrison which in turn brought said influence to the Beatles compositions (such as Norwegian Wood).
This is from Nora's debut album, Come Away With Me, 2002. It was nominated for 3 Grammys. Her voice is so delicate but commands 100 percent of your attention. Her piano playing is so elegant and graceful. She is so captivating, beyond beautiful. Great reaction. Buckets of Maple Syrup love from Canada ❤️❤️ 🇨🇦 🇨🇦
Isn’t she wonderful…. her voice is weep full your right Jay! When I heard the song for the first time tears fell! When she sings live oh boy what a mesmerizing ability she has!
The album won Grammy Awards for Album of the Year, Best Pop Vocal Album, and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The song "Don't Know Why" won Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
Yes 2003 was a HORRIBLE year for music in America. Maybe they could react to Siouxsie and the Banshees Kiss Them For Me on a Female Friday? Anyone like that one besides me?
She had daily online music sessions for an hour during Covid. Just her sitting at her piano and singing. She helped many people feel more connected and calm through that time. She’s amazing!!
That is a good way of putting it. I've also heard it said that her voice is like a reassuring hug, in fact the first time I heard that it was said by a vocal coach reacting to her. Which blew my mind because it was exactly what I had spent decades trying to figure out.
You MUST check out her live tribute to Chris Cornell, singing "Black Hole Sun", 5 days after he had passed. You won't be able to make it through the song without tearing up.
The version on her "live" collection titled til we meet again, is especially good. It may even be the same recording, does the crowd drown everything out in rapturous applause for what has to be 10 seconds at least, right near the start? [I believe she's actually done a few takes of black hole sun]
I used to come home for a long day at work. Eat some dinner then lay down on the couch in the basement, turn on this Nora Jones CD and nap with my newborn snuggled on my chest. Her voice would carry me away and relieve all the stress of the day. My cares and worries melted away with every note of her songs. Nothing mattered but my family and the peaceful feeling this whole album would saturate my being with. So glad you reacted to her. A great anchor for New Years Eve.
Norah is also the daughter of Ravi Shankhar, who taught George Harrison how to play the sitar, and played other times with George. The lady has a wonderful voice.
I played this entire album in my 1st born sons room during nap time and it set the tone perfectly every time. He’s 18 now and the calmest human being I’ve ever met.
Norah Jones is so talented. And People may not realize it if they have never seen her perform and just watch artistic videos, but the reason she is so comfortable with her songs is that she has written quite a few of them, and not only that, but when she performs, she is playing the piano. That is her, and her skill on the piano is equal to her vocal performance. So many of these are HER songs, or ones arranged by her, with her timing, her piano, and man, she is doing so much in a performance. The vocals are just her expression, they do seem to be effortless but I'm sure there is discipline involved. She, and her band, are serious musicians. And if you ever get a chance to see her in person, or a recording of a live performance, it beats a video. She's fascinating to watch, and her back story is interesting as well. If I remember she was a college student who was moonlighting playing in piano bars, and it just took off. Databyter
She still is completely unique. Many imitators, maybe, since back then, but few if any can even approach that level of quality for their voice. And to say that she is better now then ever she was, well that would be a severe understatement.
I'm an old geezer myself, but when this cd came out it was the first new music I had bought in almost 20yrs. She impressed me so much, and have bought several more since then.
She comes by her brilliance genetically. Her father is Ravi Shankar--the amazing sitar player from India, who influenced the Beatles and taught George how to play sitar. See Ravi's performance at The Monterey Pop Festival to understand his popularity.
My husband and I listened to Norah all of the time. Thank you so much. I’m overcome with emotion, my love passed away a year and a half ago. Happy New Year to your family and you!❤🎉
Norah's voice is incredible. If you want to have your heart stolen for 5 and a half minutes, you should listen to her and Bonnie Raitt sing Tennessee Waltz together. It's a very slow song, but you will feel every note they sing in your heart. Phenomenal.
Her voice is heavenly. She is also an accomplished musician with the piano. Thanks for your great reaction. Happy New Year to you both and your lovely family. 👏👏🇨🇦🇨🇦
Look at her doing LIVE PERFORMANCES. She is wonderful! I played her stuff over and over and over! Her singing and piano skills are so soulful, jazzy, quiet and memorable!
Norah was huge in the early 2000s. She didn't have many songs that garnered tones of radio airplay, but this song (her first single) was one that did. She did amass a huge following, though, and you can hear why. ""Sunrise", "What Am I To You?" and "Thinking About You" are all great outings by Norah. Thanks for reacting, and have a great new year, guys!!
Agreed. As you said, this was her initial single and her breakthrough. She won 3 Grammy Awards for this song. The title track “Come Away with Me” was the third single released off the same album. I had the CD.
Got this CD when it came out..just love it! She brings me peace!❤🕊 btw..listen to Corrine Bailey Rae " Put Your Records On". Love her too..makes me think of Nora!
One of the best voices of the early 2ooo's. Her debut album and singles went platinum 10 times over and won over everyone for what was called, old folks music. The cover of Hank Williams Sr COLD, COLD HEART is a gem. But my personal favorite is the song I'VE GOT TO SEE YOU AGAIN. Just enough smoke and sensual suggestion to get meaning across. Her follow-up album has the sophisticated IN THE MORNING. Norah Continues to plow her own little garden of quiet flowers. Easy, light, and whiskey slow. She also has a country band she plays with as a change of pace named the Little Willie's. She named them after Willie Nelson, who is her friend, and that she grew up mostly in Texas her herself. One mow thing. Ray Charles recorded an album of duets with si gers he liked before passed away. It was my Mother's favorite. Norah and Ray sind HERE WE GO AGAIN and the contrast and compliment of their their voices is beautiful. Give it a listen. Enjoy
One of the best voices ever. I got this album (her first I think) when my unit got back to Kuwait after invading Iraq back in 2003. Just so soothing and beautiful. She didn't just help people through COVID but me and many others through PTSD for a couple decades now
You need to hear the "live" version of Cold cold heart then. To say it's another level wouldn't do it justice. I readily admit I love most of that album. The only song I could pick or leave is "feeling the same way", but it's sandwiched between Cold cold heart, and the enchanting title song, so, what chance did that have? My absolute favourite song on the entire album, from an album I have undoubtedly heard thousands of times, is "The nearness of you" that closer never get's old. It encapsulates what Norah has always been about. I will however dispute that she, Norah, is NOT just one of the best voices of the early 2000s. She's one of the best voices in he world, period, of ALL time. [And she is massively underrated and underappreciated]
I remeber hearing this song for the first time on the radio and will NEVER forget how STUNNED I was. 7 studio albums, 50M records sold, 9 Grammys. A few must listens: Come Away with Me, Humble Me (Always brings a tear), Sunrise, and the entire latest record Pick Me Up Off The Floor. What a talent..... I don't even have the words. Great reaction, TY.
What Norah Jones is SO dang good at is her phrasing of the words that she sings. You can clearly hear every word that she sings which is not as common as one would think. Combing her phrasing, her cadence, & near pitch perfect delivery just makes people melt into her songs.
Norah has so much more to offer that would surprise you. My favorite album of hers is Little Broken Hearts. It’s a little bit Rock-A-Billy, a little Pop, and little Blues. A little of everything, but quite different from her early material. Kind of similar to Lana Del Rey’s album with The Black Keys “Ultraviolence.” She even did an album duet with Billy Joe, of Green Day.
I remember listening to her first two albums on repeat as a teenager when they first came out. As I grew older I would sing her song “Seven Years” to my daughters. She’s purely talented. Love her.
Nora is a phenomenal musician with a pedigree. Her father is a very famous musician from India who also happened to play on several Beatles songs. She also did a pretty incredible album with Billie Joe Armstrong (lead singer of the 90’s pop/punk band Green Day). That album was remake of an entire Everly Brothers album from the late 1950’s. They LITERALLY recorded an entire album (every song) that the Everly Brothers released 50 years before called Songs Our Father Taught Us.
Beatles connection! Her father is Ravi Shankar, whom George Harrison was fascinated with. With the influence of Shankar, Harrison used a sitar on "Norwegian Wood." He also took classical Indian music lessons from Shankar.
This is the song that brought her into the spotlight. What a talent she is with such an unique voice which brings you in every time. Try Seven Years next. Beautiful song.
I heard this at work one day and instantly fell in love. After work I went out and bought the CD. Her voice is a soothing balm upon my parched and withered soul.
Hard to believe this song is already 20 years old. Seems recent somehow, still. From the opening cords, you instantly can tell the song is going to be soft, poignant, and special, and when Jones sings the first line, a shiver runs up your back--even decades later. For another spectacular vocal performance, consider This Woman's Work by Kate Bush. It's an obscure song that I don't think even charted in the US, but a work of absolutely piercing beauty.
The first time I heard Norah Jones sing I felt I was going to die. In truth I was ready to. I'd heard nothing before that was quite like that, and have heard nothing since that has ever truly measured up. She is something else. IMO she stands alone. I could type about her for hours on end, but I will spare you that, and just say I think she's the best. As in the greatest there has ever or will ever be, and that she is hugely underappreciated, but that probably has something to do with her philosophy and how she does things. She could have easily been a commercial mega star as some I won't mention, are, but she wouldn't be the true musician that she is, had she gone that route. I said I would spare you and then... my apologies. I confess when it comes to Norah I find it hard to be concise.
I just love her cover of the original Hank Williams' "Cold, Cold Heart." You should do them one after the other - the original and then Norah. Sure, Hank wrote it - but Norah owns it.
I love Norah Jones so much every time I decide to listen to her music I just feel this sense of peace and calm come over me I feel myself snuggled up in a nice warm sweater, a nice warm blanket, a cup of hot chocolate, reading a book by the fireplace❤❤❤
Amber explained so so well ms. Jones great voice. Less than two years with reactions and she speaks about music like a pro. No offens Jay, love you tooo…
Not a single bad song off that record and her voice is impeccable. Norah Jones is intimacy, romance, and sexy all rolled into one. "Come Away With Me" is another fantastic one.
Norah has a CD with collaborations with Willie Nelson..The Foo Fighters... Herbie Hancock..Ray Charles and many more. The CD spans from 2001-2010 it really shows her range and different styles of music. Truly a gifted soul🎵🎶🎵🎼
This used to play repeatedly on the radio back in early 2000's. We'd hear her every day while I was working. Was one of the most popular songs on the New Zealand charts.
Another song that brings a tear to my eyes, "Summertime" performed by Sarah Vaughn ♥️ Edit: also Nora's cover of Nina Simmones "Turn Me On" is really good!
Knew this song from back in the day, and as gorgeous as it is, somehow I never got further into her catalog. I've rediscovered her recently because she started doing a podcast (Playing along with Norah Jones) that is so good! She'll have a single guest that she interviews, hangs out with, and plays with. Found it on RUclips and she's as sweet a soul as you might imagine...She's done one with Jeff Tweedy (Wilco) and another with Mavis Staples. If you enjoy her music, you should check it out!
Have you considered subscribing to her? Just saying because you mention the back catalogue thing, well, much of it is available to check out on this very medium. Maybe I'm a little bit biased as a 2 decades long fan, but I'm just throwing that out there.
To start out my day right, Norah Jones is one I listen to. It doesn't make a difference how uptight yesterday was, Norah takes my anxieties away without trying. She sings without trying too hard to sing. My mother influenced me in that way.
My Dallas, TX girl! Her voice is so captivating, it's impossible not to stop and listen and sway along with the music. I think you'll both love her song "Turn Me On".
her entire first album is absolutely spell binding...even down to the jazz standard at the end...she's often overlooked as a performer, saw her in the early 2000's and she is spot on great.
I wouldn't say she was ever a "performer". She's a musician, a great one at that, who over her career has developed her stage-craft, but she's too real and honest and up-front and lacking in a desire to "put on a show" to ever be a performer. Musicality and feeling and expression, and staying true to the emotion and tone of the songs that she sings, is always fore-front with Norah Jones.
Was lucky enough to see Norah Jones live many, many years ago when she played Massey Hall here in Toronto, she’s simply phenomenal. If Jay loves her voice so much, I think there’s another singer by the name of Sarah McLachlan he might enjoy . Take a listen to her singing “Angel”. I sure you will like her too Amber. Keep up the good work. Love you two and a Happy New Year to you and your family 💕💕🇨🇦🇨🇦
I feel ya, Jay. I'm absolutely melting. One of my favourite songs actually. Jazzy, the piano, her voice, the whole vibe. I just love this so much. I love to sing it when I'm home alone as well 😅
YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Glad you two checked out this song... hope you keep on discovering just how talented she is. I've always considered her voice to be smooth as silk with a soulful sophistication. Seriously though, you should check out her duet with..... DOLLY PARTON... it's called "Creepin' In"... and it's amazing how well their voices blend considering how different their voices and styles are.
Ravi Shankar, the father of folk singer Norah Jones, became widely known for his collaborations with The Beatles, among other western musicians, and brought the intricacy and beauty of classical Indian music to the masses in doing so.
Some artists don't need every note. Just the right ones. I loved Jay's comment... something like "oh and she plays the piano too" lol. She was blessed with lots of talents. No doubt there's plenty of work behind the scenes, but some people just make it look so easy!
I like the absolute joy jay has when he listens to her sing. I am the exact same way. My friends used to laugh because I would jam out to her cuz I was in high school when this album came out but I carried on listening all the time with no shame at all!
This may have been mentioned at your last reaction but she’s the daughter of Ravi Shankar an Indian (eastern) composer and musician and friend of George Harrison, and Sue Jones a concert producer
Omg, I actually remember I was about 15 when Norah Jones came out with this song, they'd always play jack Johnson flake right after on my way to summer School many a times. But I fell in love first time I heard this...good songs are timeless!!!! ♾️
Dang, I turned 22 the year the album Come Away With Me came out. Her voice always reminds me of the film "Maid In Manhattan." This was overplayed on the radio, such a soothing angelic voice.
Thank you for reacting to Nora Jones again. She is such a phenomenal singer! Her voice has an ethereal quality to it. When she sings, it's as if her voice massages your soul.
Ah, yes - Norah Jones! A warm drink of sunshine for the soul. I highly recommend checking out her song "Sunrise", especially the "live in Amsterdam" version. The official video is cute, but you get to see her and her band performing in the Amsterdam version and it sounds great. Another great song of hers is "Those Sweet Words."
My 24 year old daughter loves Norah Jones (jazz is her favorite) and loves vinyl records. I gave her the album, Come Away With Me, which this song is on, for Christmas. I tried to replace my old 80s stereo too, so she'd have her own new equipment. She wouldn't let me because she said a new one would sound clear without pops and cracks. She said that if she wanted to hear super clear, remastered music, she would just stream it or listen to a CD....she may be 24, but she's got an old soul. 😊🥰
This child was born with music in her blood, literally. Her father is Ravi Shankar (you should check him out). Her mother is Sue Jones who is a concert producer. Her dad was buddies with George Harrison of the Beatles.
The whole album is a masterpiece. Used to listen to it to start the weekend after five days of stressful work when I was young. Need to do it again, thanks for remembering me.
Her father was legendary sitar musician and close friend of George Harrison, Mr. Ravi Shankar. Not only does she have the voice of an angel, she kind of looks like one, too.
And her half-sister, Anoushka Shankar, has followed in their father's footsteps playing the sitar.
Thank you, I didn't know that.
Salute to Ravi Shankar, one of the greatest musicians to walk the planet. If you got 18 minutes, check out his set at the Monterey Pop Festival. You’ll see some familiar faces dumbfounded in the crowd.

YES YES YES! Ravi Shankar and Alla Racha give one of the greatest live performances of all time at The Monterey Pop Festival!
Multi Grammy award winning sitar legend and composer. He was responsible for bringing the Indian influence to George Harrison which in turn brought said influence to the Beatles compositions (such as Norwegian Wood).
This entire album is a masterpiece. I’ve always felt this album was my generations “tapestry”
Yes
That's a good analogy!
So true 👍
What a delightful way to describe the song. I shall happily adopt it.
Love Tapestry too!! That album is my generation. I also have all of Nora's albums ❤❤
The bliss on Jay's face as her voice begins to wash over him is absolutely all of us!
This is from Nora's debut album, Come Away With Me, 2002.
It was nominated for 3 Grammys.
Her voice is so delicate but commands 100 percent of your attention. Her piano playing is so elegant and graceful. She is so captivating, beyond beautiful.

I think I have that DVD
Norah did and still does little live sessions from her home all through the covid last couple of years. on her own YT site
She had daily online music sessions for an hour during Covid. Just her sitting at her piano and singing. She helped many people feel more connected and calm through that time. She’s amazing!!
CONvid. But yes, beautiful music.
I saw a few of those! She is really great at the piano! Oh, and that voice! ❤😂😊
Her voice is like sunlight through the trees. Warm, dancing and beautiful. Happy New Year! 🥂 ☮❤🎶
Sunlight through the trees. That is a perfect description!
I could have tried for days and never come up with something so absolutely spot on.
Great description!
That is a good way of putting it. I've also heard it said that her voice is like a reassuring hug, in fact the first time I heard that it was said by a vocal coach reacting to her. Which blew my mind because it was exactly what I had spent decades trying to figure out.

Gonna have to check this out.
@@jennifermorris6848 Me too. Back in the day Black Hole Sun was my favorite song. 🖤

I’ve always said her albums are like auditory Prozac
I’m in total agreement with you guys. Norah is in a class by herself.
Two of my many favorites are One Flight Down, The Nearness of You.
This is one of those songs that it doesn't matter what type of music you listen to. You know this is beautiful.
About 4 notes into the first time I heard this song I was hooked. The smoky breathiness into the crystal clear notes... Man! Just a killer voice.
I think it took me 3. ❤❤❤❤
Took me 2 notes to be hooked. After a thousand listens my heat still melts. But, it’s a secret pleasure.
Daughter of Ravi Shankar, another music great
Norah is one of my favorite singers. Her voice is so different and she has so much passion when she things. Just love it
Me too!
I love Nora Jones. She is so smoothe that she almost slurs her voice. It’s so soft and comfortable and unique. Just love her jazz style singing

I agree 100%. Norah’s voice, coupled with the jazz, is sensuality in sound waves
Jay & Amber, you'll love her "Sunrise", "I'll Be Your Baby Tonight" and more!!!
Norah is a major talent. Very special.
I'm an old geezer myself, but when this cd came out it was the first new music I had bought in almost 20yrs. She impressed me

Her best song in one of the best albums ever.
I love Norah Jones so much every time I decide to listen to her music I just feel this sense of peace and calm come over me I feel myself snuggled up in a nice warm sweater, a nice warm blanket, a cup of hot chocolate, reading a book by the fireplace❤❤❤
Top to bottom, this album is a masterpiece.
Amber explained so so well ms. Jones great voice. Less than two years with reactions and she speaks about music like a pro. No offens Jay, love you tooo…
Years ago when these songs were first out, I got to attend her concert. She is so beautiful and her voice envelopes you like a warm embrace.
Not a single bad song off that record and her voice is impeccable. Norah Jones is intimacy, romance, and sexy all rolled into one. "Come Away With Me" is another fantastic one.
During the quarantine, she played this live from her home. Just her and the piano... That was a treat!
Another song that brings a tear to my eyes, "Summertime" performed by Sarah Vaughn ♥️
Edit: also Nora's cover of Nina Simmones "Turn Me On" is really good!
If you enjoy her music, you should check it out!
thanks for this info. sounds great.
It doesn't make a difference
how uptight yesterday was, Norah takes my anxieties away without trying. She
sings without trying too hard to sing. My mother influenced me in that way.
Beautiful song Amber and jay were definitely feeling this song
Wheeeeeew, Norah MAKES you FEEL the Word's. Every One of her song's. Always A Great Cruise Song.
She is a perfect example of femininity! Even her voice. ✌️♥️
I never knew that. Is there a large gap in age between he and her?
@@cweefy not sure
She has a unique way of phrasing, beautiful.
Some artists don't need every note. Just the right ones. I loved Jay's comment... something like "oh and she plays the piano too" lol. She was blessed with lots of talents. No doubt there's plenty of work behind the scenes, but some people just make it look so easy!
My wife and I saw her live at the Newport Jazz Festival last summer. She is a legend.
So many great songs - Sunrise, The Story, Chasing Pirates, It’s Gonna Be, Stuck, Back to Manhattan.
Jay is smitten! I love this song and the way she chose to sing it!
Norah got her career start in Denton Tx when she went to UNT. She sang often at the Flying Tomato and clubs around town.
Denton was the next biggest town for me (amber, about 50 mins away) growing up! I can’t believe she started that close!
I knew you were not far away. Sly Stone was born here too.
I like the absolute joy jay has when he listens to her sing. I am the exact same way. My friends used to laugh because I would jam out to her cuz I was in high school when this album came out but I carried on listening all the time with no shame at all!
The word that you are searching for is ... SOULFULL!
A song that takes me back instantly to the world I first heard it in - absolutely perfect.
This may have been mentioned at your last reaction but she’s the daughter of Ravi Shankar an Indian (eastern) composer and musician and friend of George Harrison, and Sue Jones a concert producer
It's a sweetness that she has in her voice and phrasing.
Omg, I actually remember I was about 15 when Norah Jones came out with this song, they'd always play jack Johnson flake right after on my way to summer School many a times. But I fell in love first time I heard this...good songs are timeless!!!! ♾️
Nora is just special, period.
Soothing. That's the word that comes to mind. 😊
I love listening to this talented lady.
Woke up to her playing this song on SNL. It was so beautiful.
This child was born with music in her blood, literally. Her father is Ravi Shankar (you should check him out). Her mother is Sue Jones who is a concert producer. Her dad was buddies with George Harrison of the Beatles.
YES ‼️
I love the smooth tones of Norah Jones ‼️😁
The whole album is a masterpiece. Used to listen to it to start the weekend after five days of stressful work when I was young. Need to do it again, thanks for remembering me.
