No worries on snipping and adding a new esc plug. And traxxas radios are pretty nice if youre running the tsm ones. And being able to bind 30 traxxas rigs to one radio is a really nice feature to have!
You learn something everyday. I had no idea you could bind multiple trucks to one radio! Any idea if I could use a traxxas battery this a non Traxxas truck? I kinda want an Arrma infraction...
Thank you, and absolutely. I'm working on a video right now about upgrades for the Maxx V2, not to spoil it, but my recommendation is to leave it stock and make upgrades when (or if) you break something. So far nothing has broke, but I'm about to do the upgrade to the metal gear servo and the metal drive shafts. I think these are both very safe upgrades and do improve the performance of the truck. Unlike most of the crawlers I have, I feel that the metal upgrades should be avoided for this truck because they may actually reduce durability. The force from a hard landing or crash will transfer to different parts of the truck causing parts to break instead of flexing.
That is part of the reason I like the open ELRS radio system for fpv. I was thinking about trying to get elrs to work on my micro crawler.... Do you have a favorite radio protocol for rc cars/trucks?
@@Nathan_Adams Futaba and Sanwa are probably the best. They're used a lot by those who race. Expensive, though. I've been using cheap Spektrum radios lately. If I ever do spend real money on a radio, it will probably be a Futaba.
great video man! Which one would you recommend ? this one or the MT 10 Rival V.20 ? I'm looking to get back into RC after a long time, I had the Tamiya Grasshopper around 30 years ago! 😀 Cheers
I really like the maxx, If your budget can accommodate it I have been beating on mine relentlessly, even tossing the controller to friends and it never seems to skip a beat. I am super impressed with it still. That said the MT 10 rival seems like an excellent option for a significant amount less, the one time I got to take it for a rip, it feels real good and is probably a better value overall than the Traxxas Maxx.
I also wanted to add, the price difference between the two means you can have a bunch of extra batteries, upgrade parts, and cash left over for any kind of repairs you may need to do. The value on the MT-10 is really good!
@@Nathan_Adams cheers mate! yeah, very good points. I put an order for it last night, looking forward to getting it hopefully for a bash this Saturday! I need batteries and a charger too, I've got nothing! 😀
Hello my fellow Magnificent Bastard :) I used to run a lot of bashers back in the day but now I run crawlers. Raising a glass of MOntana born Devils Brigade whiskey to you.
I love crawlers, micro crawlers was what got me back into the hobby during the pandemic. I got an SCX24 that became wildly out of control with metal parts and other upgrades. Also cheers, with a glass of port Charlotte heavily peated! 🍻
Hey Nate. I ended up pulling the trigger on the Wide Maxx V2. In your view and experience, what are the immediate potential changes I may need to make out of the box (hex hubs, toe links, etc.)??? I haven't even run it yet as I just took it out of the box. Heading to the LHS in the AM, so if there's anything I need to pick up while I'm there, that will be a good time to do it since then shops not right down the road. Thank you again for your time.
This is the most un interesting answer, but I would run it stock. The plastic is great because it flexes, but does not break. If anything, I would consider picking up the metal axels and metal geared servo, they are a good upgrade if you break the stock ones. I actually did have one of the hub carrier bolts tear out after a particularly nasty crash into a curb, but I just screwed it back in and kept bashing.
Yeah, I used a stock gopro mount with 3m extreme duty mounting tape. I still have it fall off now and then. I am thinking of JB welding one to the same spot
Just the stock adhesive mounts. I cleaned the truck body with alcohol before applying and let it dry/stick for an hour or so before ripping with it. I have had it fall off before
If it is warmer than 90 degrees F (33 degrees C) I have had it overheat while relentlessly beating on it. It if it is less than 80degrees F, I have had no issues. I am not 100% sure if the dust cover made a big difference, but I would say it does not help if it is hot out.
I would say if you are having fun with the Kraton, stick with it. If you are spending more time repairing the Kraton or just want a change of scenery, the Maxx is a great and fun truck.
I think what I was trying to go for there was you can find plenty of replacement parts, both factory and aftermarket, and accessories for the Traxxas Maxx
the worst part of the traxxas connectors is not even that they are propriatary but just that they are terrible in general. they wear out, get hot, melt and unsolder themselves constantly.
Another good reason to clip the connector of 😂 If mine does overheat or melt, what do you feel is the best connector for ground vehicles? I was thinking about EC5 or xt150
@@Nathan_Adams im still wallowing in the world of melted connectors but when i do make the snip i plan on going xt90. i cant bring my self to ditch $800 in batteries and chargers to make the cutover. i cornered myself before i knew better
Yes, I found that out after I put up the video. I think that is the move unless you will never use a Traxxas battery and your warranty is expired or you will never use it.
The radio and reciever would work together, but I have never tried to swap the reciver in a traxxas rc truck out. Since the hardware is not all that different, I assume it is possible. As for the battery, depends on the cell count. Assuming you are looking at the current Traxxas Maxx, the electrics are rated for 4s (4-cell lipo batteries) so a 4s battery from Power hobby should work if you get the adapter for the Traxxas proprietary battery plug to xt60.
I have been looking to replace my cinematic XMaxx (xmaxx with no body and a Ronin gimbal mount) with the Arrma Keaton. How has reliability been for you? And how his the availability of upgrade parts?
Thank you. Part of the long explanation is me learning what needs a long explanation and what doesn't (I agree with you in hindsight, this really did not need it), and what I need to explain in detail for viewers. Generally, anyone who has a familiarity with the RC hobby already gets it, but I am learning what those who have never been exposed need explained.
Just curious, what is the netting or cloth type cover laying over the internals when removing the cover? I loved the point you made about it not being suitable for unsupervised children. What are your thoughts on the Hoss compared to this Maxx V2? Thank you for the video and your time. Stay safe out there!
The cover over the top of the internals is a "dust cover" for the xmaxx chassis that I got off Amazon to reduce the amount of cleaning I would need to dd since I drive in a lot of grassy and dusty areas. They are like $15 and for me they are worth it. I do notice on hot days it gets a little warmer than without it on there, but it is manageable for my use. As for the Hoss vs Maxx, I prefer the maxx because it is a little longer, a little wider, and has the 4s electronics. It makes it feel more stable and lets me drive a little more aggressively. The Hoss does have more ground clearance, but for me, the extra $100 is worth it for the esc upgrade.
@@Nathan_Adams Is the dust cover RC specific or just something you were able to utilize for that purpose? Have a link possibly. Thanks for your time and replying. Stay safe! 😎👍🏼
No problem and I am always happy to help. The dust cover is specific to the Maxx v2 (I assume they make similar for other RC trucks). This is the one I use amzn.to/3F6gkbV
@@flhandster4395 shockingly yes, i was skeptical about the Velcro can double sided tape to stick the Velcro to the truck, but seven month of use and it is still kicking! I have not driven in water too much, but it is holding well so far.

for the proprietary batteries you can use an adapter like a EC5 to Traxxas adapter and it wont void the warranty
I did not know they made one! That is great news. Now I need to find a good 4s in that same shape.

Why not use an adapter, XT90 to Traxxas plug, no wire cutting or modifications 🤔
When I made the video I did not know adapters existed 😂. I now use one of those adapters with my TRX4
