This 58 Corvette reminds me of my 'Uncle Bob' (Mother's 1st cousin).
He showed up one day at our house with his 58 Corvette and gave us all a ride. (one at a time of course)
I was 9 years old and it was one of my favorite car memories when I was a kid.
My Uncle Bob worked for GM as a director of film.
He was responsible for many of the GM commercials of that time...
    A super nice guy.

Awesome 'Vette. The '58's have been criticized as being over-the-top in chrome. Chrome was EVERYWHERE!! Screw those bonehead critics!! I think the '58 was almost built to be a show car from the beginning. What a scrumptious example... Thank you, Lou, for featuring this gorgeous piece of GM history. Two thumbs up all the way!! 👍👍

    Great job Lou.
I had a 1958 that I bought for $10,000 in 1990 from the original owner ( an Eastern Airlines pilot) who bought it for his Wife in February 1958. Black and Silver color 283 ci 245 hp 3 speed.
My car options were AM Wonderbar,
Windshield pump wash, Heater, Soft and hard top, Seatbelts, and cars built before May 1958 had a generator counter in the tach. BUT this was the best -- a factor tow package. The original owner had a small sailboat that they towed to the Lake.
*:note with the 3 speed the car was an absoulute dog off the line , but once it was rolling if you punched it the car got up and barked.
I am 6'2 and It was tight to get in, and my head was right up to the top of the windshield.
Other then removing those awful ply tires and replacing with wide white coker radials my car was original. .
The 1958 is a head turner no doubt.
I parted ways with it in 2016 for a 66 mid year big block, I just had to have.
Thank you Lou - this car is wonderful

I would be really curious to know what they paid for it in 1958. I have read that they cost about $3500 in 1958 but I wonder if local dealers had different variations based on different offers.
How do you find the size of the steering wheel with your size.

    • @Cha-y412
      @Cha-y412 2 года назад

@@bighands69 I never asked what he bought it for new.
I dont know how to determine the steering wheel size, but can tell you the one on my 58 was very large and I needed all of it without power steering in tight spots.
I always got a kick out of heat being optional.

Hi Lou! I discovered your channel only a couple months ago and I’m now HOOKED! Excellent stuff!
One point on the “roof”. The first generation Vettes (‘53-‘62) were only convertibles. But as the owner told you, they sold an optional one-piece hardtop. For northern locations, you’d put the hardtop on the car (it clamped down with engineered fixtures) so that you could drive the car in winter.
When they came out with the Second Generation Sting Ray, you could get either the fixed roof fastback or the traditional convertible. Just like the First Gen, if you had the droptop, you could buy a single piece hardtop for winter.
But wait, there’s more! Even into the Third Generation, if you had a convertible you could get a one-piece hardtop for winter use!
Those one-piece hardtops weren’t designed to install and remove at the drop of a hat. Basically, you made the decision late in October or early November that “good weather was over” and you clamped the hardtop on. It was heavy and a 2 man job, although I guy I knew had his rigged up in the garage on ropes so that he could just lower it down onto the car!

What a difference a few model years made with the first generation Corvette. The Corvette had a very humble beginning with in 1953 with a 150 horsepower 6 cylinder engine and the 2 speed powerglide automatic transmission. By the 1957 and 1958 model years Corvette had a 283 cubic inch 230 or more horsepower engine and a four speed manual transmission. Zora Arkus-Duntov made a good decision when he insisted that the Corvette needed the Chevrolet small bloc V8 engine and manual transmission.

These were always cool cars, never went out of favor. There was nothing else like it on the road for many years and could be identified from a long way off. The ‘58 was instantly recognized as a ‘58 from the front or rear. I love the silver cove paint and red interior on this one. Driving slow in traffic or at the local car-hop restaurant was a ton of fun for onlookers for sure. Thanks for featuring this one!

Many years ago, I was working on my paper route when I came upon an accident. A white, first-generation Corvette had been T-boned by some big American car. Pieces of the Corvette were everywhere. I knew that Corvettes were fiberglass, but I'd never thought about what would happen to the fiberglass in an accident. I picked up a conveniently sized piece of the fiberglass and took it home. (I figured the car's owner didn't need it any more.) I kept that piece of fiberglass for a long time. It was the closest I got to owning a Corvette.

I love that this man has kept that precious vehicle stock! That 283 4bbl setup is just right as far as power goes. Some folks would want to really tweak that engine, but why would you?...The car, even with a 400bhp engine would not be the ultimate fast car nowadays. 230bhp scoots that chassis down the road quickly, with authority,, and sounds just right!

First year for Quad Headlights on Corvette. There wasn't enough arm room for me and I'd bang my elbow going into second! Certainly a beauty though.

In 1973 I bought a '58 for $2500. Same drive train. My favorite car ever to drive. 1 day I stopped for an ice cream cone to find (must have been) 6 girls crooning over the car. Ah youth is lost on the young. I didn't think to ask for a single phone number.

Lots of great 1 year only features plus it was one of the last ones to have a trunk think they did away with that in 61 or 62

If panorama windshields weren't illegal, Chevrolet could do a retro '58 Corvette, just like Ford did with the first generation Thunderbird

Nice looking 1958 Corvette! I do believe that '58 was the first year to feature the 283 V8 engine, because prior to that most all previous Corvettes were equipped with the Blue Flame 6-cylinder engine. That engine sounded awesome and the Borg Warner T-10 4-speed sounded sweet winding out through the gears with its moaning sound. Sweet car indeed, Lou!

The 58 sported the most chrome ever on a Corvette. Too much some would say. They toned it down in the 59 which according Vette aficionados has the most tasteful amount of Chrome.

When I first saw the car I thought Ursala. Being my demeanor and characteristics around certain types. Men of course. I didn't wanna do the Autozone thing they came up with now days. So I've been looking for my description at that time frame. You would be amazed about someone saying the spoiled life is boring. I played dad and their you have my grandma's diary. My offer is at that year the same. $2958.13/100 receipt at eye view.

From the 50's to about 1970, The U.S. made some of the most beautiful cars in the world. As the government with all their regulations stuck their filthy nose in the car business, the U.S. auto industry went to chit.
