The Barbour Beaufort is a British Country Sports (Game Shooting) jacket. The sleeves are short to aid shotgun use. The front pockets are large for shotgun cartridges. The hand warmer pockets are for stopping your fingers from freezing when standing with your shotgun waiting for the next drive of birds. Game bird Season in the UK runs from the end of August to first week of February. It rain's a hell of a lot in October and November. And is very chilly. A jacket that can withstand this environment is a jacket for life.
Excellent and most helpful comment. Do wonder if the jacket comes with straps to keep the front pocket flaps open for easy access during shooting. These straps have a push-button and are normally tucked -away in the handwarmer pockets.
no hunter here but i am a guy from the netherlands who bikes everywhere no car no scooter i have the baeufort simply for its looks and function it's amazing and as you know the climate here is kinda similar to the uk!
I've had my Beaufort jacket for three years and find it indispensable for the variations of weather in Michigan. I bought it for the length so I can wear my Harris tweed sport coat and not look out of place.
I enjoyed the review thank you. I've had a Beaufort since the late 1980's, I've rewaxed it every two or three years and it's now due to go back to Barbour for lining repairs. My Beaufort has been great value for money and at times during ownership I've even been fashionable! A word of caution though, the Zips to the rear pocket can cause havoc to car upholstery and your mother in laws furniture which won't make you popular.
Thanks for this review. I own a 1991 vintage Bedale which was recently re-waxed by Barbour and I recently bought a NOS 1989 vintage Beaufort. Of the two, the Bedale is considerably shorter, given it was originally designed for riding, but it has the knitted cuffs, which I prefer. The large rear pocket on the Beaufort is handy for storing gloves and a scarf and the longer length makes it warmer. I also have the acrylic liner and detachable hood, which are transferable. I’d be interested to see a review of the vintage jackets versus their more modern iterations. From what I understand, the Classic Bedale and Classic Beaufort continue to be made in the U.K., but some online commentators appear to suggest there has been a decline in build quality over the years. Keep up the good work! 🧥
I have a regular Beaufort. I sprung for the matching hood and liner too. My arms are covered to the wrist with the sleeves. With Nova Scotia’s increasingly mild winters, I might be able to wear it year round. I have a Beaconsfield parka and Union Jack motorcycle jacket too. Barbour makes excellent gear.
I love the Baeufort Jacket - have mine since 30 years - you can send them in to get them refreshed, waxed whatever - just great and stylish for a lifetime
Wow. 30 years, that’s a lot. I hope I would carry the same Beaufort jackets through the years. I was thinking to send it to Barbour. But they don’t do it in Canada. You have to send it to the US.
I recently bought the Beaufort. Excellent jacket with one problem - the sleeves are too short (even to aid shot gun use). For those who do not intend to shoot, it is still worth buying but you will want to use Barbours alteration service to extend the sleeves 2 - 3 cm....and factor in the additional cost...
This was a brilliant video. As a Scottish person my parents forced me to wear them when I was a child. I utterly rebelled but at the tender age of 45 I'm now understanding the genius in the madness. I'm about to go shopping for one but what colour is yours?

Hello; At the beginning of the video, that is, is the color on you olive color and is it the classic Beaufort model or the normal beaufort? I am 1.72 tall and 80 kilos. What size would you think would fit me in the classic Beaufort model?
Just wonder how long you have been wearing this one (classic beaufort). Its colour seems really nice, quite different than i expect it to be on the classic one. i thought it would be a bit lighter colour.
I had my first Barbour Beaufort in the mid eighties. It serves for riding , canoe trips in Sweden, for making serious woodbucking and other woodcrafts as well as walking down Ku`damm in Berlin. It serves me for 14 years. What a jacket. Then it starts to fall appart- So I bought an other. The first one claimed to be made out of only the best of agyptian cotton. The second one only says to be made out of high quallity cotton. The second one only lasts me 4 years. What a pitty. So I bought a cheap one that costs me only 100 euro . that one lasts me even longer than the second Beaufort. So why should I spend 500 euro or more to for a jacket, when the company has quit to produce real quality? It realy is a shame, that barbour produces high priced jackets today that doesn`t hold what they say.
Thank you for sharing your story. I heard that the quality is not the same these days. But I got two Beauforts about 5 years ago. I am pretty satisfied with the quality.
Hello. l am a taller fellow. 194 cm tall & about 105 kg. I have been researching a bit today & have been leaning towards the Bedale since it has that 'bum flap' that the Beaufort doesn't have. Would there be a size that could accommodate my long-armed frame nicely? XXL size is hit & miss for me dependant upon the manufacturer it seems.
Shall you try it on at the store ? The sales guys would suggest for the sizes . I am 180 cm , 70 kg. They advise me to go for 38 …. Say that only lady or very skinny guy would go for 36…. It intends to have relaxed fit . if you prefer slim fit , it’s better to go for the international line than classic lines. Bear in mind, during the years, the Barbour waxed jackets shrink a bit.
