You bring much knowledge for the newbies. I remember when I wanted to know about ammo and pistols, I watched a lot of youtubes, your channel has been great.
I'm a US Army veteran, CCW license holder, NRA member, 2A supporter. 🇺🇸. A few basic points for new shooters & CCW users; know & understand the gun laws, Handgunlaw.us . Keep firearms clean & understand how to load, unload, store them. Use only 🚔 type factory made ammunition. No reloaded styles or hand load. As for general, proven CCW brands: see Speer Gold Dot, Federal HST, Corbon DPX, Winchester Ranger T, T series(Ranger One), Hornady Critical Duty. I use Critical Duty & Federal HST loads mostly. I'd add to always have at least 1 extra loaded magazine with you or with a 5-6 shot DA revolver use 2 speed strips. ✔
I haven't even watched this episode yet & will in a few hours. But you and so many other "Guntubers" have done the firearms community and really all personal proctecters a great service by affording us so much info and data at your own cost & risk. Thank you.
Guardian Minifarm Yeah, Thanks for showing us all of your testing and how deep the rounds penetrated and the avg expansion of the rounds and the retained weight after penetrating and how effective the rounds are in simulated targets. Oh, I'm sorry, that's right. It's those other channels that give us that boring information about velocity and foot pounds of energy and all that other useless information. I get confused.
Hollow points for any kind of self defense or home defense. 124gr HST is what I carry in all three of my edc guns. I also keep a small stash of 124gr gold dots and 135gr Critical Duty on hand as well. I also reccomend stocking up on ball ammo for any kind of shtf or ammo shortage such as now. If crap goes down for real ball ammo still makes holes in stuff and is way cheaper to stack deep! Excellent video as usual Jesse!
I've been reviewing these types of videos for a few years now, and fairly new to the gun world. But this by far was one of the best videos I've ever stumbled across. You have the gift of keeping it clear and simple, so clear I'm now a subscriber. Great job, looking forward to more great videos.
My take on the Hornady self defense ammo is that the Critical Defense is designed more for the shorter barreled (3" - ) pistols and the Critical Duty for the full size pistols with longer barrels (4" - ). Also, the ammo chosen should be the ammo that gives you the best accuracy and groups. For example, my pistol does not have adjustable sights and I use the ammo type/weight that gives me the best POA/POI results. Great video. Keep up the fight.
Hey man good on you for making this video there's a lot of new gun owners out there recently who probably don't know anything about this. I love how our community is coming together and giving our knowledge to people who are new to firearms and the sport of shooting
Could you test the 150 grain HST micro in a full-size gun just to see what it'll do? I'm quite curious and it doesn't look like anybody else has done a full size test.
I agree HST and gold dot are the best! But I don’t mind the critical defense 115. But the duty goes to deep for me and low expansion. The Remington is great for the cheap hard to find since Walmart stopped carrying handgun ammo. Thanks for all you do enjoy the ammo reviews! Great channel!!!!
The reason the military uses ball ammo is the Hague Convention of 1899, Declaration III, prohibited the use in international warfare of bullets that easily expand or flatten in the body. The 147 grain HST seems to have the best controlled expansion over a large range of barrel lengths because the bullet speed stays approx the same from a 3.5" barrel through a 16" barrel. The Speer god dot also looks good but at longer barrel lengths (8" and above)the bullet goes faster causing uncontrolled expansion and pedals that break off.
I appreciate your observation regarding ammo choice as it pertains to legal issues. I often point out this concern when talking about home defense weapons as well. Having a wood stock Remington 870 on the evidence table for the judge to look at will give a very different impression than an AR-15 with a 30 RND magazine. Also, 1 blast of buck shot from the Remington is likely to end the fight, whereas, the AR may take several shots to incapacitate an armed perpetrator. Again, ignorant people may misunderstand the realities of armed conflict.
I've got my carry gun and my home defense gun loaded with Hornandy Critical Duty 135 grain. It seems like I'm switching between that and Federal HST 124 grain depending on what the gunshop has at the time. Yesterday besides a little bit of FMJ they had a few boxes of 147 grain Winchester PDX1 so I bought the 3 boxes that they had . It's not my favorite but the way things are going right now I figured I'd snag what I can while they have it.
Awesome video, as usual, great knowledge for all the new shooters. I've always sent new shooters and family members to your ammo videos and I absolutely intend to keep doing so. Keep it up!
I carry 9mm and 40sw half-and-half. And I do own a 3.3 inch 45acp. The one positive thing I can say about the 40 is it is less dependent on barrel length for expansion. My 3” 40shield projectiles look the same as my 4.5” glock 22 projectiles. 9 mm you definitely have to pay some attention to. Some rounds just will not expand out of a 3 inch barrel. A short barrel 45acp requires major attention. The only round that I found that expands reliably every time out of my 3.3” is the Speer gold dot 200g +p. For 9mm I gravitate towards the same as 1shot for my 3.25” barrel. The 124 +p gold dot and hst. Either or.
Well done video. I also recommend the 124 grains. I have a mossy MC1sc and I carry the 135 critical duty in it. Your review of the critical defense and critical duty was fantastic and I suggest everyone watch that.
My two chosen loads are Critical duty in 124 or 135 and Rem 147 Golden Saber. Been using The Rem load for many years and have taken many deer and coyote with it from duty size pistols. I have used it as well from 3.2"-4.5" barreled pistols in duty applications and self defense. I have had to use it four times in the last 20 years for real. Worked outstandingly every time.
Golden Saber original is a good load from my experience. Duty wise we used Gold Dot. Winchester SXT for a short time after the Black Talons got a bad rap. Same bullet just no lubalox. Retired now and I use Gold Dot, HST and 135 grain +p Critical duty. According to what I'm doing or what weapon. I use Underwood 45acp 255 grain flatnose hardcast or Underwood 9mm 147 grain flatnose hardcast when in the backwoods. That 45 255 grain is one of , if not the most accurate rounds I've shot period. With very little, if any lead build up.
Assuming you are LE, did you get to talk to ME about it after as far as expansion, penetration, did the jacket separate and if so how far did jacket go in before separating (but even when does seems a .32 90-120 gr core still goes deep). Those all 4 cases from 147 gr. GS? Thank you. I use some 124 plus P in some of my guns before I got HSTs.
Thank you for giving the new gun owners something to go by. I do have to say though the extreme penetrators are not really meant for home defense if you're going to go with Underwood the extreme Defenders are very good and I really like them in 380 where I don't necessarily trust the hollow points but I've done some testing myself plus done a lot of research and I think are just as good if not better than hollow points. Thanks again for putting out great videos.
The military uses ball ammo because of international law (Hague Convention of 1899/1907). It is a war crime to use hollow points or expanding projectiles. I read that the military had to stop using multi shot 45 ammo during Vietnam because it was banned by the Hague Convention too. We are signers and enforcers of the 1907 Hague Convention. Just a FYI bit of info.
Newbie here and I got the 43X and went to Local shop they had HST 150 and Critical Defense I passed on the hst because I thought it was for full size I went with Critical Defense 😕 thanks for the info I should of grabbed the HST
Its worth pointing out that training and becoming familiar with the load you intend to shoot is crucial. EX: If you go to the range and dump 115grain FMJ 9mm all day, but your defensive ammo is 124, 147+grain hollows... It may not seem like allot of difference, but it is... The ballistics and even recoil between the loads will vary. What ever you decide to shoot for defensive options, plan to train and learn with allot of those rounds. My preference is training with 115g FMJ and sticking to 115g Horandy critical hollows. The training and cost efficiency in the ballistics are well balanced. Great vid and suggestions.
I switched over to.the underwood 124 gr jhp plus p. In my 9mm. 125 gr in my 686 and 27. Jhp plus p's they are super. Rather be tries by 12, than carries by six.
Always great to see you and thank you for helping new gun owners. Your information is thoughtful and honest 😁. Thanks for all you do and those who help.
black hills has a round called the honey badger and it stays with in the 12 to 18 inches. seems like a good round but have not had the chance to order from black hills. I have been seeing good things about them.
shootingthebull410 has also done a lot of ammo tests especially using short barrel guns like the Shield. He also likes the Federal HST 124 gr. He says the HST stands for "Hot Stuff."
Ball ammo getting used in army started in ww2 the reason being that if you shot someone with that ammo in a non vital area the estimate around 10 people have to nurse that person you got people on the battle field trying to carry them out so there’s 2 extra people slowed down and once they get them safe you got to think about doctors and nurses it takes more time and people when you wound someone vs just 1 dead
Ordered myself 3 boxes of those bad boys. I was a little bit turned off mistakenly thinking he was dogging those when it was the penetrator rounds he was talking about.
The only exception i make to the no ball ammo is 32acp, 25acp, and similar small caliber handguns. Either the hollow point doesn't expand in them or the expand and only get ~6in of penetration and very little extra damage compared to fmj.
Agreed even .380...380 and under it won't have enough energy to get out the back of body with any retained energy...even getting to back skin is a lot, let alone through that, through back shirt, and dropping out w less than 50fps left over and that would be super super rare if you talk to Medical examiners.
Let’s see choose the best ammo for your new gun. I just bought a new gun the other day. it’s a 6.5 Creedmoor and the best ammo for that gun is the ammo I make myself . because I tune my ammo to my guns and it’s always on the shelf.
I have run HST and COR*BON. Don't be afraid of COR*BON. It works well. You mentioned Underwood Xtreme Penetrator and promptly chased people away from it but you did NOT mention the Xtreme Defender by Underwood. It doesn't penetrate like the Xtreme Penetrator, it does do a lot of damage in the intended target. It works. It works great. I don't think it was right to talk about defense ammo then mention the other but not the Defender, when it's arguably one of, if not the best round out there. That becomes subjective and personal opinion very quickly, i realize, however the "reports from afield" will back me up. I like my 1911 and hot-rodded Glock 9mm but this stuff even brings my 9mm short (.380) up to full 9mm performance, and then some. It's quite an impressive combination of an improved projectile and the modern, better burning powders improving ballistics across the board. My little, Keltec "pocket rocket" makes me even happier than ever. It's a good backup and a stop-gap when I'm somewhere that carrying anything bigger just isn't an option due to very light clothing, church... lol. What have you, it just disappears into any pocket, the palm of my hand covers it and, now, its got a bigger bite. People like to readily dismiss .380 out of hand. That's a mistake. It's still a 9mm round, it's just not going as fast. But when you're only 5-6 ft. away, anywho, it does a fine job. Especially with "the good stuff" in it. Sorry for the tirade, I just get into putting out the straight scoop, which you do a good job of. And thanks for letting people know not to get caught up in the hype of things like the R.I.P. ammo, with tombstones on the box. You're right, how it looks in court is more important than how it looks on your kitchen table. Thanks for the good videos.
From what I remember, military can not use hollow points in war because it is considered inhuman. So the whole good enough for them/ good enough for me, is not a good way to look at it. Definitely get hollows.
Great vid bro. I agree on the UMC hollow points. I have tested and used the 9mm and .45ACP UMC loads. While not the most impressive they always perform in a very decent manner. Good load. If I had to carry them only i would feel confident in them.
What about Bulldog? I just became aware of this round and I like the idea of the reliability of hardball feeding and the compression reaction to *expand* the bullet.
Hey 1Shot! I was wondering if you could do some ballistics tests on the Hornady Black 9mm JHP? I have tried to find stats on them but I have not been able to find any ballistics on this round. Love the Critical Defense round! I had a buddy who had to defend himself with a M&P Shield using 115 grain Critical Defense and the court mentioned how the round was specifically for self defense. Hope you are staying safe my man!
Haven't they proven that 124 is the optimal weight for 9mm in any barrel really. But I know for a fact that my XD Mod.2 9mm subcompact with 3in barrel shoots 124-135 better than anything I've tried so far. I'm pretty sure heavier bullets work better in longer barrels for the velocity to open up. Im also a fan of +p in short barrels too. Any modern firearm in good condition can handle it especially when manufacturers don't load to true +p. Also +p loads optimized for shorter barrels the recoil is negligible. 124 though is definitely the sweet spot for 9mm. You don't lose velocity for weight and vice versa. Winchesters newest load is pretty available right now and it's the best on the market if you ask me.
My .o2$ worth. If your new first gun new. With out going into the guns just the ammo. My suggestions is. #1 make sure hollow points are leage for you where you are at. Ask the local cops or sheriff's dep. What brand they carry. If it a leo only + p or +p+ the manufacturer normally makes a standard version of it. That's what I would go with if you can find it. They the cops and manufacturer put the r@d time into duty ammo. Also remember you need to shoot the gun to make sure it will feed your choice and to make sure it hits to the sites. #2 if you have a rifle especially 223- 308 again ask the local cops. If a different cal a middle weight deer hunting bullet will normally work just fine. Again make sure it works and hits to point of aim with your choice. Also if who sold you said rifle told you its boarsited you will still need to do a final sight in. #3 shotgun most Leo's will use eather 00 or #4 buckshot. Eather should be ok I would go with a low recoil version if you go with them. Me I would go with #1 buck. The reason more pellets than 00 and bigger diameter and heavier pellets than #4 buck. With you being new I wouldn't recommend a slug. Now if you know some one that knows about guns get them to help. If you don't when you can take a class go to a good clean shooting range I am sure you can find help there. You could also take a hunter ed course. It will give you some basic knowledge and a good bit of safety knowledge. If you stay with the guns after all of this. You might find shoot to be fun. And you may like it. If you don't enjoy it I would still recommend you keep it in case something else happens. But get some school on it including taking care of it. and remember to at least practice and get fresh ammo at least once a year. And please be safe with it and in these times. Welcome to gun ownership please be responsible.
There really isn't a choice right now. You just have to buy whatever is on the shelf. I haven't seen any .223 or 5.56 for awhile. Stuck with cheaper stuff as far as 9mm goes. 2 box limit. Never used Magtech before. It's probably ok. At least it's not made in China. Made in Brazil.
I'm a new gun owner and was wondering if you could do a video on the best ammo or the ones you recommend for shooting range training for 9mm. I see all these brands like magtech, pmc, blazer, winchester and confiused as to what to buy to practice shooting with?
Fairly new to guns, I picked up some 9mm I don't remember the grain maybe 124 or 147 not there at the moment to check, thought it just regular ball ammo but it has flat tips? Any idea why or what for?
Nice newbie ammo vid! I just subbed. I agree that the Underwood Extreme Penetrator penetrates too much in the average self defense situation. However, I’m wondering if you’ve tried the Extreme Defense in regular or +P? I’ve watched a lot of ballistics jell tests with and without barriers, and these seem the most consistent barrier blind bullets that I’ve seen. I carry the +P 90 grain. Keep up the good work!
The extreme penetrator was designed to achieve 18 inches of penetration after going through barriers like car doors winshields and drywall ect. To be fair this has to be taken into account, its a solid copper non hollow point much like using ball ammo. In my opinion this would be the best round for any encounter where one may have to shoot through a barrier such as in a car through a door ect. It will do what a lead cored jacketed bullet wont do and what a hollow point jacketed bullet cant and thats penetrate and continue on into the target with less deflection and no expansion as it gets there. Just my two cents.
In my country i cant use hollow points HST or jacketed . With concelead permit i can use just FMJ so i use flat nose 147 fmj. What do you think about my choice?
Or 437.5 grains per ounce. A 1oz slug out of a 12 gauge, is a 437.5 grain bullet moving 1500fps making 2,185 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. That’s some power.

Huh, didn't know the Critical Defense had a bad wrap. On paper I figured that it would be ideal given the consistent expansion and how well it avoids over penetration. Of course I've also never shot anyone with it so all just guess work
A Civilian has never once had an over penetration through a bad guy into a good guy. NOT ONCE. Now, the 80% of misses with full energy is what you should worry about. bodies are a lot tougher than you think.
Very informative, well flowing video. I even learned something about the Tumbling Ammo. I'd like to see a Gel Test with it. Just curious, what state are you in?
FLsheepdog1 Thank you! I have a couple videos on it way back on the channel and actually the “New Carry Gun” Video i just uploaded a couple weeks ago, i end the video with a Fort Scott gel test. I live on illinois border, film vids in Indiana
You should get some subsonic ammo and put it up against regular and plus p ammo and see if they have a penetration difference they probably do but it would be interesting to see how much of a difference there is I just thought of it I thought would be good video idea for you
Subsonic only means the round doesnt break the speed of sound (around 1125 feet per second) in comparison between pistol rounds and rifle rounds; a .45 with a 185 grain projectile fired from a five inch barrel would only hit around 950 fps. But the same round out of say a 18 inch barrel may go past that as the bullet would have more time to burn all the powder through the length of the barrel. That is the difference between rifles and pistols with the same caliber bullet weight and powder weight. The longer the barrel the faster the speed the bullet exits at and more time in contact with the lands and grooves builds more spin and more stability. Hope this helps!
Its so funny that you think anyone has options to choose from right now. lol hahahahahaha. But what you can get. That is pretty much the advice I have to give right now. The stores around here are just empty.
I also want to add to what was said in this video. The G2 R.I.P. ammo is hot garbage! If you are a new firearms owner and are learning, please do not ever buy that ammo. I work law enforcement and the 2 most common types of ammo that are used by law enforcement agencies are the Federal Premium HST and Hydrashok ammo and the Speer Gold Dot ammo. Don’t confuse the Gold Dot ammo with the Speer G2 ammo. The G2 ammo was supposed to be the second generation of the Gold Dot ammo but has grossly under performed. So stick with the original Gold Dot ammo if you choose it. The HST ammo and Hydrashok ammo is very similar and both work great. The Hydrashok ammo may penetrate some hard barriers slightly better, like auto glass or auto body panels and doors. In 9mm, I prefer those brands of ammo in either 124 gr. or 147 gr. With +P and +P+ rated ammo, I recommend for new firearms owners to stay away from them. The P stands for pressure or some may even say power. But unless your firearm is rated to accept +P ammo, you can damage it and have a very serious malfunction that could include the barrel of your gun blowing up. But even if your firearm is rated to accept +P, what you will experience is greater recoil or where the muzzle/front of the gun flips up as each round is fired. This then takes slightly longer to get your firearm back on target. Then, because of the increased pressures, they will cause the barrel of your firearm to wear out sooner. Most barrels on any decently made firearm should last anywhere from 50,000 rounds to 100,000 rounds but it is not uncommon to see barrels last even longer if the firearm is properly cared for. But +P ammo may shorten your barrel life if that was the only ammo ever fired out of it by up to 25%. With +P+ ammo, you cut the barrels life expectancy in half at best because the pressures are so much higher. With the Hornady Critical Duty ammo, it too is also very good. In 9mm, I prefer the 135 gr. They only offer the 124 gr. bullet in +P pressure but I have tested this ammo very thoroughly and have also used it for years. If barrier penetration is not a factor, the ammo does great. But if barrier penetration is a factor, the ammo really shines because that is specifically what it was designed for. With the Critical Defense ammo, it is specifically designed to be used in sub compact handguns with barrels that are less than 4” in length. Outside of thick clothing being worn, those rounds do not penetrate barriers at all. That ammo was specifically designed for someone who has a firearm like a Smith & Wesson Shield, or a Glock 43X and keeps it in their night stand for home defense. The last ammo that I recommend and I think is the best ammo that anyone can buy is made by 2 different companies but it is the same exact bullet with both companies. And that is the Lehigh Defense Xtreme Defender and Underwood Xtreme Defender. It is very similar to the Xtreme Penetrator that is also made by both companies. It is only 90 gr. though for a 9mm. Like the Xtreme Penetrator ammo, the Xtreme Defender ammo is a solid copper piece that looks like a Phillips head screwdriver with the tip cut off. With the Xtreme Defender ammo, it is designed to not over penetrate. It has larger size flutes and dumps all of its energy very quickly into a threat. The primary wound channel is almost always twice as big as the primary wound channel from hollow points. But the great thing about the Xtreme Defender ammo is that it can be used in any firearm with any barrel length. It penetrates the same no matter if a barrier needs to be penetrated first or not and because it is a lighter round, it has a lot less recoil. With the Xtreme Penetrator ammo, it is not designed for self protection or home defense. It is designed for hunting or for someone that goes hiking and/or camping and the person could encounter a mountain lion, bear, or a bigfoot and you need a round that will penetrate much deeper, through really thick fur, skin, bones, muscle and tissue and still have enough energy to reach vital organs on the critter trying to attack you. The other really good think about the Xtreme Defender ammo is that in some liberal States, where they like to suppress and violate people’s rights, States like New York and New Jersey for example, law makers have made hollow points illegal. This is idiocy because the whole reason why you want a hollow point or expanding ammo, is so the round dumps all of its energy into the threat. If you use ball ammo or what is also known as full metal jacket bullets, all they do is shoot holes through a target the size of the bullet. But most of those types of bullets have enough energy to go through 3 or 4 people before the round stops. With the Xtreme Defender ammo, it is legal in all 50 States since it is not a hollow point and it does not expand. But by its design, does not over penetrate. Or maybe I should say that it has a very small chance of over penetrating. If you are a new firearms owner or are considering becoming one, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Even if they seem like they are very basic or stupid questions. There truly are no stupid questions for someone that does not know an answer. And let the people know that you are talking to and asking questions, that you are new to firearms.
Thank you for all your info. I got very cynical in my comment because so much info in this video WAS WRONG !!! Wrong 1Shot, you were WRONG !!!! Thank you for taking the time and courtesy of correcting 1Shots errors in info in this video. Other than this video I have enjoyed this channel. But your youth got the better of your misinformation this time and I'm sorry, but not only should You Tube ban this video, but you ought to take it down yourself 1Shot. Thank you Officer for all you do and your sacrifices and for correct r many mistakes in this video today. GOD BLESS YOU SIR !!!
This is a lengthy post but I wanted to reply to a few points. First, the +P 9x19mm factory load is FINE 🙄. 🇺🇸 ammunition are made to SAAMI specs. A modern, clean 9mm pistol firing 9mm +P is not going to blow up 💥 or be a hazard. The Orlando PD, 🚔 Orlando.gov has issued SIG P226, P229R type 9mm sidearms since 1990. They switched to the newer SIG R(rail) models in 2010 or so. The Orlando cops used Winchester 127gr +P+ JHP for many years. The guns did not break or "wear out". No 👮🏽♂️ burst into flames either. I'd agree good CCW brands include Speer Gold Dot, Critical Duty, Federal HST. Avoid the gimmicks, Be aware of the local laws, Handgunlaw.us . Consider a legal aid plan like CCWsafe.com
DL Lambert, most firearms will handle +P ammo. However, many older firearms will not. Before anyone ever uses +P ammo or +P+, they really should read their owners manual first or call, write or email the manufacturer.
Have you ever shot any of that Federal "PUNCH" ammo ?? I found some on the federal website for super cheap which isnt very promising but it hasnt gotten here yet. I usually have critical defense or hst but its slim pickin's out here...
I don't know if you have found federals new ammo or not yet but it's called punch. Really curious to see how this preforms in gel out of a short barrel.
You should let new PEOPLE know it's very easy to load their own ammo not EVERY gun likes factory ammo . my guns heavy loads work best. Aka +p hot loaded rounds. You want hit hard the shock of the hit will stop a heart and pop lungs. You can dial in any round for MAX expansion or penetration or both.
Honest question. Between the top 3 or so brands, does it really matter? I’ve never beard or someone getting shot and getting up and saying “ha! That wasn’t enough expansion to stop me!” Lol
Just bought my first gun. Actually I bought two....thank you stimulus check. I bought a Benelli Supernova 12 gauge, thanks to you. I also bought a SW M&P Shield 9mm. My questions is, have you ever shot Nosler ammo? It was the only 9mm ammo I could get within 2 weeks....everything else was 8-9 weeks out. Just curious what your thoughts are on Nosler, or if you've ever even shot it?
Shawn Carter Thats awesome im glad i could help! No i actually haven’t shot Nosler but from everything ive seen it looks great. I will add it to the list to buy and test
Sir, I respectfully disagree with your recommendations for short-barrel 9mm bullet weights. I WANT the light, 115 gr weight at the HIGHEST velocity I can get. More velocity equals more energy; from an engineering standpoint, energy is the ability to do work, and the work we want to do is stopping as rapidly as possible that attack offered against us or someone we are acting on behalf of. Agent John Jacobs of the Border Patrol National Firearms Unit, in a published report, established a minimum of 400 ft/lbs of energy for any round carried by the BP, CBP, and ICE. I am a retired INS/ICE/CBP Officer and 38-year firearms instructor. I carry, in any gun I am wearing, the Federal 115 gr JHP in +P+ level pressure. It works...and it only penetrates to around 14 inches, and now that I'm retired, I DO NOT WANT deep penetration; I no longer have to shoot through car bodies, windshields, etc. Critical Duty will go through you, and become a risk to innocents behind you. The Critical Defense is a good choice for John Q. Public to use/carry. My Master's involved a LOT of ammunition effectiveness study, and I SERIOUSLY recommend the three books by Evan Marshall and Edwin Sanow, the last of which was Street Stoppers. They had no theory to "prove," rather they documented what actually happened in 28,000 shootings over 20+ years. In 9mm, the Fed 115 gr JHP +P+ tops the effectiveness chart. Hammer
You bring much knowledge for the newbies. I remember when I wanted to know about ammo and pistols, I watched a lot of youtubes, your channel has been great.

What is shtf?

I like hollow points for less penetration in urban/home defense and heavier rounds for penetration in woods/animal defense.
Do a video on the federal Premium train and protect!! I’d say it’s comparable to the Remington green and white box
You did forget to mention with plus P ammo that some guns aren't rated for it and it could be potentially dangerous to shoot out of those guns
Ive never even owned a gun before and am looking into a ccw and your videos have been so informative and easy to understand thank you
Kelsey Dunn just bought the s&w m&p 2.0 9mm 4” barrel, it is great you can look at videos here on you tube
I've been reviewing these types of videos for a few years now, and fairly new to the gun world. But this by far was one of the best videos I've ever stumbled across. You have the gift of keeping it clear and simple, so clear I'm now a subscriber. Great job, looking forward to more great videos.
Chuck Man Thank you very much i seriously appreciate that
My take on the Hornady self defense ammo is that the Critical Defense is designed more for the shorter barreled (3" - ) pistols and the Critical Duty for the full size pistols with longer barrels (4" - ).
I love guns and it feels like an eternity to turn 21 and finally when i turn 21 it’s soo complicated to find ammo and gun prices go up😂😂
Could you test the 150 grain HST micro in a full-size gun just to see what it'll do?
Either or.
Thanks for the honest, well-informed opinions...and for staying away from politics. Just subscribed....thanks again.
Well done video. I also recommend the 124 grains. I have a mossy MC1sc and I carry the 135 critical duty in it. Your review of the critical defense and critical duty was fantastic and I suggest everyone watch that.
Awesome information!! I had to re-start the video to take notes 🤗 thanks!!
I carry a Springfield hellcat and I carry it with hornady critical defense 115 grain and Speer gold dot mismatched
Kick er I agree 100%. I wish i would have mentioned the xtreme defender i had a box sitting right there
Let’s do the Fort Scott gel test with 16” pcc
I have been shooting for years and I still like to see videos like this. 😎👍
“We are signers and enforcers” show your sources. We did not agree to this, it’s just cheaper using FMJ.
Newbie here and I got the 43X and went to Local shop they had HST 150 and Critical Defense I passed on the hst because I thought it was for full size I went with Critical Defense 😕 thanks for the info I should of grabbed the HST
Civil Defense. It’s the only hollow points I use. You should check it out.
Great vid and suggestions.
well that is not an informed decision on 115 critical anything
I switched over to.the underwood 124 gr jhp plus p. In my 9mm. 125 gr in my 686 and 27. Jhp plus p's they are super.
Rather be tries by 12, than carries by six.
You really helped me a lot in this video.
Thank you for sharing
I really would like to see a precision test on the TUI ammo. Light rounds usually dont have the same impact point as a regular round.
You left out a great budget self defense ammo, the Winchester White Box Personal Protection.
Great video, very informative. I love the HST.
Always great to see you and thank you for helping new gun owners. Your information is thoughtful and honest 😁. Thanks for all you do and those who help.
Chris Volckening Thank you very much
It's hard to find now but look for federal syntech hollow point. Look up vids on it's bad ass and cheeper. And for the new people welcome
Some very good information. Good job bro. Federal HST HST 124gr +p is in all of my guns.
Alaskan Ballistics Thanks man. There is so much info to cover I definitely missed a couple things... Tried to keep it simple. Appreciate it
It’s all about the Winchester Ranger T Series 147gr 9mm. They are just hard as hell to get. It’s a nasty round.
Superb presentation for an broad introduction!
Good job, Very informative. Thanks.
black hills has a round called the honey badger and it stays with in the 12 to 18 inches. seems like a good round but have not had the chance to order from black hills. I have been seeing good things about them.
The Military uses ball ammo because of the Geneva Convention.
shootingthebull410 has also done a lot of ammo tests especially using short barrel guns like the Shield.
Underwood xtreme defender 90 grain +p is my go to defense round
Junior 83 I was upset that i failed to mention that one when i brought up the xtreme penetrator. Xtreme defender is a great one
Ordered myself 3 boxes of those bad boys. I was a little bit turned off mistakenly thinking he was dogging those when it was the penetrator rounds he was talking about.
95 grain are bad ass
HST my number one defense ammo!👍🏽🇺🇸
Really good video. I appreciate the break down. 💪🤙
Critical defense are good some boxes and other boxes they dont perform. I dont trust hornady for consistency
The Richie Thank you. Yeah they are great for the price
Hope you are staying safe my man!
my man forgot to mention underwood xtreme defender, other than that great explanation as always.
Winchesters newest load is pretty available right now and it's the best on the market if you ask me.
.45 HST is my defense round with ball for the range.
Have you heard of people alternating their ammo in the magazine. Hollow , FMJ,hollow, FMJ etc...? thoughts on this?
I can’t believe u supporting it with this video.
Great content! .300 blk please.
Maybe not on topic for this video; but, if one has to shoot, one needs to shoot at least twice or until the threat is stopped.
Yes 20 guage ammo please!!! Video is GR8 TY!.!.!
Absolutely love your content...!
In my country i cant use hollow points HST or jacketed . With concelead permit i can use just FMJ so i use flat nose 147 fmj. What do you think about my choice?
You know everything
For reference when he talks about grains 7000 grains= 1 pound
Or 437.5 grains per ounce. A 1oz slug out of a 12 gauge, is a 437.5 grain bullet moving 1500fps making 2,185 ft lbs of energy at the muzzle. That’s some power.

out of all the tests i have done i still perfer the vcrown
Great information! 👍
Andrew Lowrie Same here. I still dont think its the worst thing you could choose
Tbh a hallow is a bullet it’s going through your lil coat / jean jacket
How about..
Barnes 9mm 115+p tac?
Great video!!
J R thank u for insight. Hope this comment gets pinned.
Hey there! What about federal Punch ?🤔
Have you ever shot any of that Federal "PUNCH" ammo ?? I found some on the federal website for super cheap which isnt very promising but it hasnt gotten here yet. I usually have critical defense or hst but its slim pickin's out here...
@iPac9mm Yes , that Punch came in. Its pretty good i guess
Can you try the 180gr 9mm from siesmic ammo
You choose the right ammo by watching 1 shot. He’s compared and analyzed the best of the best!
Frost River Thank you
I don't know if you have found federals new ammo or not yet but it's called punch. Really curious to see how this preforms in gel out of a short barrel.
Eric Hodson jr I am anxious to try it as soon as i can find some. Just heard about it recently so it will be getting tested soon
WHAT ABOUT FRANGIBLE???????
You should let new PEOPLE know it's very easy to load their own ammo not EVERY gun likes factory ammo . my guns heavy loads work best. Aka +p hot loaded rounds. You want hit hard the shock of the hit will stop a heart and pop lungs. You can dial in any round for MAX expansion or penetration or both.
Honest question. Between the top 3 or so brands, does it really matter? I’ve never beard or someone getting shot and getting up and saying “ha! That wasn’t enough expansion to stop me!” Lol
So does this mean the heavier the bullet the better?
I disagree with you on the Critical Defense, They expand reliably and the penetration is decent. 🇺🇸
@@1ShotTV, thanks! Keep up the good work, love the videos.
Can you do 556 ammo comparison
The reason the military uses ball is because of the Geneva convention.
Do you prefer +P or normal pressure?
Thank You!!!
