Why didn't we get a ghoul school sequel instead?
Hey wasn't there a story idea pitch for a Live-Action dark and serious teen drama based on Scooby-Doo that was going to be aired on The CW? I think it was going called "Mystery Inc." and it was going to be worked on by some of the people who did Riverdale, Arrow, and Supernatural.
i feel ya pan i hate this with every fiber of my being

Can't wait for Ghoul School to be retconned into the girls just cosplaying as monsters and the school being an acting school

Love Train Velma: you somehow ate swamp gas
Well, given that the Ghoul School was brought back in OK KO they really are monsters.
It just boggles my mind at how Scooby Doo seems obsessed with switching back and forth between "Monsters are real" and "Monsters are fake" to the point of basically retconning an entire 21 year old movie as a swamp gas hallucination only to switch back to AHHH REAL MONSTERS at the end.
And really? Daphne's talk show career is now a school project? C'mon...
plus side, all these continuity errors mean we can safely say this is SUPER non-canon
Yeah, totally confusing set overall.
Its especially baffling considering Scooby doo is canonically part of the DC universe which has completely supernatural elements.
Honestly I think Scooby Doo should stick with the it's all fake stick I mean I just find it more entertaining than oh shit Scooby has to save the universe or samurai stuff even tho I do love the samurai movie
I am convinced the people who made this movie never saw the original except for a couple of stills

Yes he did
WTF!

Gotdang swamp gas making folks commit murder
Cill Bipher Velma might’ve accidentally made the first one even scarier with that revelation lol
Zombie Island was perfect as it was. They really didn't need to return to it.
I don't think this was even done as a cash grab, this was an intentional middle finger.
@@supermariof0521 At least TTG vs TT wasn't. It's decent.
They certainly didn’t need to try to actually ruin it.
scooby doo movies dont need sequels in general anyway so...
I was expecting it to be an attempt at recreating the story and spookiness of the first movie, which would turn out to be a watered down version of the original (after all, family content these days can never have actual scary stuff)...But it was so much worse. They didn't even try. I would be ashamed to make such a soulles sequel to a classic as Zombie Island.
It's pretty lame to know that both the Sequels for Zombie Island and 13th ghost decide to just retcon the existence of actual monsters.😑
Nathaniel Foga Neither are canon because of it.
@@bunsmasterbunny Scoob canon is pretty flexible. There isn't a timeline, and there isn't really a canon to speak of, outside of continuities within a show
No, the movie clearly shows that that catman is real and everyone but Velma actually does acknowledge monsters exist.
Yeah the fact that they go back to previously fully supernatural cases and try and stick a 'real' explanation isn't doing the originals any favors. They leave it open in both movies that Velma is wrong and the supernatural DOES exist but then what was the point of these movies? The main reason they were so fondly remembered was straying from the traditional Scooby formula and trying to string it together into the modern DTV version of the gang just isn't working. I hope they go full supernatural with that teased potential Reluctant Werewolf follow up. The way I see it, the movies happened exactly as we remembered them, its just THIS gang experienced the same mysteries with some of the details shuffled a bit. According to Mystery Inc. the Scooby verse being reset is an actual thing so there you go.

I'll admit I go back to Monsters Unleashed sometimes. Pretty enjoyable.
This and Curse of the 13th Ghost are the most dissapointing films I've seen.
The only thing I think was tolerable in 13th Ghost compared to Return to Zombie Island was the voice actor of adult Flim Flam, Noshir Dalal. He was also known for voicing Wolf from Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice though him voicing Flim Flam sounded like if Fred is on helium and is strangled.
Return to Zombie Island has none of it. None of the edginess and creepiness of what made the original good and ended up looking like a joke. Such a failed and wasted follow-up to the original...
That is interesting
@@spritemon98 Noshir deversed better roles after Sekiro.
I can agree with that, the voice actor for Flim Flam was really good. But goddamn Curse of the 13th Ghost was like someone curb stomping the old fans. It offered us no closure and Velma was just a bitch throughout the whole movie, kind of like this one too.

Here's a better idea for a sequel to Zombie Island:
*Make the gang adults like they previously were before Mystery Incorporated rebooted them back into teens.
*Include Beau Neville (now promoted to commissioner) to aid the gang.
*The villains turn out to be a new cult of werecats & worshippers that resurrect Simone, Lena, Jaques, and crocodile victims (who are werecat zombies seeking revenge).
*The zombies are now new victims of the cult's sacrifices for immortality, while the zombies from the first film are now ghosts who won't rest until the werecat cult is finally dead.
It's not perfect, but it might sound at least better than this.
Definitely sounds better.

The people behind the franchise kept us waiting 21 years for this?!
That sure was bad. Anyway, great review.
I HATE how much the last couple of films have made Velma into this stubborn non-believer in denial. It’s so annoying.
So if it was all hallucinations, did Fred preform a fatality on a innocent homeless person when he tried to take the mask off that one zombie he decapitated?
That still sounds fuck up
Zombie Island made Scooby-Doo horror absolute and I loved it. All WB did is cash in on our nostalgia; how shameless...
The plot twist of this sequel would've been awesome if Moonscar Island was just an apparition and the film director was revealed to be a werecat who originally formed a cult based on the urban legend, and performed necromancy to finish off the Mystery Gang after the mind screw via film production. Sure, it'll be not as good as the first movie's twist, but still.
This feels like a fan-fiction of one of the most cherished Scooby Doo stories of all time, it's absolutely sacrilege!
Swamp gas?! They fought tooth and nail for their very lives over the course of an entire night, all witnessed the exact same phenomena at the exact same time, and even experienced physical levitation before their very eyes that their trusted comrade Velma confirmed wasn't just some trick... and they just shrug and go "Nah, there weren't no zombies. Must have been the wind."
2:16 Comparing the sequel to the original, it reminds me of the awful ppg reboot due to the tone down violence and the characters forgetting the past events.
I thought: "Eh, how bad could it be" But your gripes with this movie are the same I had with Curse of the 13th Ghost. "The ghosts were never real, they were only an illusion caused by the high altitude!" Yeah Velma but that doesn't explain why they all saw ghosts and used magic when travelling around the rest of the world to seal them away. Also the way the Gang reacts whenever Scrappy is mentioned is downright antagonistic. It doesn't make me love the characters, it just makes them look awfully vindictive and unlikable as a result. "Oh our fans don't like you? Well we're just going to pretend you never existed" and I'm like: "Wait, who were the 'good-guys' again?..."
It looks like Warner Bros. doesn't care about Scooby Doo asside from Mystery Incorporated (can't wait to see how they'll retcon that in the future). I mean, if you're going to do a sequel to a popular movie you'd imagine that those movies would have fans who care about the premise and play in on that, not retcon it. That's like spitting in the face of those who liked the original. It's not 'clever', it's like that annoying fanboy who wants to 'stick-it' to those who like the Classics. It just comes off as vindictive and petty... then again, it's Warner Bros. so...
Yeah, as a Scooby Doo fan I'm still looking forward to Scoob! but I already know that I probably shouldn't be expecting anything.
Yeah...sometimes, I think the folks at Warner Bros REALLY don't want adults watching cartoons.

The original terrified me when I was younger as I expected it to be the usual "person in a costume" and I couldn't sleep
Comparing the animation quality between the awesome original and this... thing just makes me sad for the state of 2D animation in 2019. Then again, the original was animated in Japan and 2D anime is still alive and well... for now at least.
If it helps, when it comes to the west we do have some spectacular talent when it comes to 2D animation in recent years, ex. the creators of Cuphead and Cartoon Saloon (Secret of Kells, Song of the Sea)! It takes a little more digging, but thankfully it's there. :-)
I knew OG Zombie Island had a bit of an anime feel to it; particularly the cat transformation/clothes ripping scene.
Original: (happyness noises)
Return: (Toby Miguire esque scream of horror)
This movie is more of a disappointment than my own children, though that would imply that I had expectations for this movie. I wouldn't even get my hopes up for the live action movie unless James Gunn is directing
Also the zombies look like they were ripped from Plants vs Zombies
The worst kind of bad sequel: not only is it a bad movie on its own, it's so bad it retroactively makes the previous movie worse.
Ralph Breaks the Internet and A New Legacy has NOTHING on Return to Zombie Island! At least that actually cared about doing something different from the original film's storyline by going in a new direction with Vanellope and Wreck-it Ralph's friendship, and giving Ralph a villainous edge without retconning their previous characters. Space Jam: A New Legacy is infamous for just being a soulless advertisement for the WB server-verse, but it had the decency to leave Michael Jordan from the first Space Jam out of this mess.
Remember when Scooby Doo treated its audience with some respect because they understood that kids could handle being scared a little and could handle more serious movies? Because I do. I feel like everything started to go downhill after that first live action movie, and that movie is actually one of my guilty pleasures.
Seriously, #1 rule of how to avoid killing your franchise, DON'T RETCON AND REWRITE WHAT IS LARGELY CONSIDERED THE BEST MOVIE IN YOUR FRANCHISE. It was the parts that they're trying to remove, the serious, more mature feeling/design and the fact that there were actual monsters, that make long-time fans of the show consider it one of the best, if not THE best, movie that has ever been made, and arguably the best piece of material from any of the franchise's 50+ year run. That says a lot. Was it scary? Yes. Did it give most of us nightmares for weeks? HELL YES. But that was the best part about it, it was legitimately terrifying for kids, in a fun way.
Can't wait for the sequel to the Boo Brothers movie where those ghosts were frat guys in costumes.
That'll be a hoot.
Frat guys who hit on the Ghoul School girls, because this movie apparently loves crapping on its other entries too now.
And Revolta is an old radio star who's in a costume with her butler, Creeper, the hypnotic headphones were recordings of a self-help book, and Matches/the monster girls are all child actresses who decided to go to a rundown boarding school.
Such joy.
Are you kidding me? Swamp gas? Next you'll tell me that "13 Ghosts" was caused by oxygen deprivation...oh wait.
Velma is officially the worst character in this franchise.
That's what I'll say about Ghoul School if they ever decide to make a sequel to that and insert Velma in there for "scientific research" or something.
Well...I dont know What i expected, its a modern Scooby Doo film
Funny you uploaded this right after i just finished watching the first movie, i had no idea the sequel existed
To be fair-ish, this movie does have some weird thing where Velma tries to have a rational explanation while the other characters in-universe just seem to feel like her explanations are flimsy at best. Doesn't save the movie, though, especially since this feels like every other scooby-doo movie in the last 10 years.
Looks like we're going to need an official Scooby Doo timeline that puts all the movies and shows in chronological order.
Problem with that is multiple different incarnations retconning and conflicting with each other. There are a few projects that can be strung together under the same continuity but each series is kinda it's own thing. I mean, Fred has had at least 4 radically different pairs of parents throughout the franchise. The last issue of Scooby Doo Team Up really hammers the multiverse of Scoobys idea in.
@@ConsoleWarriors Now I'm eagerly awaiting "Scooby Doo: Into the Scoobyverse."
@@ConsoleWarriors I just got that issue yesterday. Sucks that it's the final issues because I enjoyed the series. To think Scooby had met three different incarnations of Batman.
I only just learned that this was a thing a few hours ago and I just knew it wouldn't be good. You're right that the overall tone was ruined when they took on a more comedic and light-heard style even through the movie's color palette. When you played the comparison of new vs old, it just made it all the more apparent. And eh... I still just felt it was unnecessary because the first movie wrapped things up as good as a Scooby Doo film could. The mystery was solved, the settlers were able to rest in peace, and Simone, Lina, and Jacques were wiped out accordingly to the curse. There was no reason to do a sequel other than an obvious cash grab hoping that those who grew up with the original movie would automatically love this one.
It's funny because this takes me back to when the darker style of the Scooby Doo feature films ended with Alien Invaders and how when Legend of Vampire Rock came out after Cyber Chase, I wasn't really feeling it because of the lighter tone (since it was taking the style of What's New Scooby Doo) and how much more better it could've been with the same darker tone that the first 3 direct-to-video movies were.
Anyway, not surprised at all that this film bombed with the fans, it just misses the mark of what made Scooby Doo on Zombie Island work so well.
Thanks for informing me of this and then ruining Zombie Island. I wish I didn't know this existed.
"Brighter, light hearted, and not as threatening" Why is this such a common trend with sequels and reboots lately? Watering things down and making them inoffensive to appeal to wider audiences?

I'm convinced this movie doesn't exist, and it was all just a bunch of swamp gas causing a collective hallucination that this was real.
I gave up years ago with the release of the Loch Ness monster movie, where they expose the monster as a fake.. and then they throw a lame cop out at that end that the real monster still exists somewhere. Yup.
I actually hated this movie so much that I contacted it's screenwriter to complain. He told me that he actually hates his own film as much as we do, and he was forced by the studio to make it like this because they insisted that the point of Scooby-Doo was to teach kids that monsters weren't real and there was nothing to be afraid of. He also told me he would pass on my complaints to the studio executive that said that.

@RebelTaxi everything you said in this review can be said about Curse of the 13th Ghost. That movie was supposed to offer older fans closure on a series that was cancelled before it could officially end. Guess what? It spit in all of their faces by saying that adventures Daphne, Shaggy and Scooby went on to capture these ghosts were hallucinations due to oxygen deprivation at high altitudes because they went to the Himalayas. I almost snapped the dvd in half when it was over.
Man I hope they don’t go after the Witch’s Ghost, Cyber Chase and the one with the Aliens next 👀😨
Let's just hope they don't nerf the Alien Movie's Aliens. Those were real aliens! And they were good guys! And Shaggy and Scooby went on a date with them! Blaming it on a pizza's mushrooms or something would be utter bs!
The sequel was awful, it’s like the people writing the movie hated how great the original was and spent the run time shitting on it.

They did the same thing to Elvira's chest that they did to Daphne's accomplishments.
so this is a sequel to a movie where the gang was visibly older- in their early adult years- only they're dressed in their pre-break up clothes which means they're in their 1940's attire as opposed to their more mature attire you see them in with movies like "The Witches Ghost" and "Scooby Doo and the Cyber Chase" But they weren't older because now they're teens again, but they're revisiting a place they clearly went to when they were older- but are younger and dismiss it with the idea that they were still kids doing an intern job even though "zombie Island" shows them all having jobs and tells the audience that Daphne has her own show... but they're younger now... and.... and... does anyone else smell copper...?
This movie feels like a bad Fanfiction.
For me, Curse of the 13th Ghost and Return to Zombi Island are nothing but published fanfiction. WB did not even get Tom Ruegger's permission to work with 13 Ghosts.
When I first learned about Scooby-Doo: Return to Zombie Island, I *knew* that Warner Bros. would do a shitty job! 🤦♂️
I'm guessing the reason they reconned this was so that all the Scooby Doo movies could be canon to each other. Which is an unnecessarily stupid idea. I mean it's not like every single Batman or TMNT cartoon property has to be in same continuity or something.
I forgot how good the animation of Zombie Island was.
6:00 Is that the studio talking here?

The first Zombie Island was amazing! This looks awful!
Honestly, if I ever had such a crazy time ANYWHERE in Lousiana, I would never return to the state and NOT remember that time. For them to forget the first instance as a group encountering real monsters suspends disbelief.

What's the point of making this a sequel if it's going to undo everything that the previous movie made?
Just to piss off fans of the firty film.
This is erasure of Daphne's career as a successful, independent woman. We do not stan.
Ironic, isn't it? That the very sequel to the movie that saved the franchise would be its death.?
Yes.
Very ironic indeed.
I like the original Scooby Doo Where are You? and most of the late 90s/early 2000s films (with the exception of Cyberchase) but called this as a cash grab when I saw the DVD. Scooby Doo as a franchise is obsolete, let it rest in peace.
