I absolutely adore how the crowd is on the edge of their collective seat the entire run. The gasp, they cheer, they chant the runner's name, there's just so much honest hype, it just makes you smile.
This was one of the top 3 runs if not #1 for me for AGDQ 2020. I stayed up late to watch this. INCREDIBLE run. Couch commentary from poo bear was a great touch, even if he’s not a Metroid runner. You don’t always need runners from the same game on the couch, just great personalities.
I watched like the first 20 minutes of this run, and stopped it so i could play Impossible myself blind(the rest of the way). I made it to that room after Wrecked Ship but right before Maridia where you have to kinda bomb yourself literally above the screen? I got past it, but not without watching the rest of the run to see where the heck to go next. Then i decided to quit when i saw that wall jump part where he tried getting everyone to honk for every jump. THEN, i decided i WILL finish mastering all the speedrun skills after his perseverence through Ridley(and i swear to god i heard him say 'RiPley' unironically, shame on you!) So thank you, OatsnGoats, for introducing me, supporting me, deterring me and finally inspiring me to (eventually) play and beat this rom hack. And of course, mostly thank you for all you've done for GDQ, healthcare and speedrunning in general! (ps, in case anyone was curious, a lot of the rooms oats doesn't go to, there's just either trolls or nothing there. Like paths will be sealed off, one e-tank location had the e-tank, but it was just a collapsable block with an e-tank sprite painted on it, stuff like that.)
the rising, MASSIVE donation counter, the bidding war, the superhuman (pun intended) gameplay... this is my favorite part of any GDQ. i love this community.
One of my favourite GDQ runs. One of those ones where all the elements of the great crowd, game skill, knowledgeable commentary and humour all come together for a beautiful almost 3 hours. Big ups Oats
Watching this a year later and hearing UraniumAnchor’s comment say “I’ll see you all in June for SGDQ 2020” hurt 🥺 can’t wait for (hopefully) an in-person SGDQ 2021 to make up for missing 2020!
I know it's a pretty basic choice, but Super Metroid is my favorite speed game (mostly because it's my favorite game period lol) and seeing the main event of the biggest speedrun marathon in the world be a unique take on my favorite game to play AND to watch makes me so, so happy. Love GDQ, Love Super Metroid, wish I had a chance to see it live.
The appeal of rom hacks is a beautiful thing, to be able to take a reimagining of an adventure, particularly when we have to do things differently. Even with the deaths, great job Oatsngoats!
I love the very genuine camaraderie coming from the couch. Andy going over and giving Oats a massage to loosen him up after a couple of tough Ridley fights was particularly heartwarming.
At first I was put off by this run cause it was a mod and not the actual Super Metroid. But after a while I finally decided to watch it and man am I glad I did. This was the best GDQ run I've seen in a long time.
Funny enough I had heard of you guys but never paid much attention due to lack of cash but like the goal you do. Then I randomly found Andy on RUclips and started watching loads of his content. Started to hear names like Oats but honestly had no idea who was good or not, etc. Now I watch this and it is nuts. So much content but I don't have the time for everyone! You guys rock though! :D
GrandPoohBear's runs are usually funny, all the Super Mario World and Mario Maker races and stuff. ZFG's OoT runs are usually really good too. Well, they tend to go bad at GDQs, but this year's one was top. The glitch exhibitions are always cool as well. The Tetris stuff from the last few years has been awesome (none this GDQ unfortunately).
@@speedude0164 it just seems to be something said anytime anything ball-like appears in Metroid. You hear it a lot in Metroid Prime whenever someone uses the infinite speed glitch. I'm not sure where/how it all started
@@speedude0164 It's a reference to SMB 3 I think, where some of the exits are 'orbs'. Which started people calling out orb whenever a level had one as the ending. I could be wrong about which SMB it is though >.>
Super entertaining run! Races and modded classic games are the two things i look forward to the most during GDQ. Really helps keep things feeling fresh while still showing off the classics.
Just wanted to say you guys are really amazing! Thank you for always putting on an amazing show and supporting all the charities. Much love from Los Angeles!
I just wanted to say that this is a game (that is, Super Metroid, not this hack) I beat normally with ~80% completion in 2hrs 14 minutes, and this is well beyond the sort of screwing around I've ever gotten up to (I'm not a speedrunner and have never even seen half these tricks). Amazing skill, Oats!
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooow I get it. I was like "why the heck are people cheering at seemingly random stuff during a boss fight?" Then I saw how close they were to 3 mil! :D
~19:51 WHAT?!?!?! GrandPOOBear, the Mario player infamous for killing innocent Yoshis, is *FOR* Saving The Animals?!?!?!?! Edit: ~21:00 WHOA!!!! THAT SAVE WAS *EPIC!!!!* Just 31 HP left! Talk about a close call! Edit 2: ~1:05:36 I completely misheard him here, and had to a double take. He said "very utilized beam," but I heard "very utilized meme..." Edit 3: ~1:26:25 I can't believe someone made Saving The Animals sound like a bad thing... Edit 4: ~1:43:47 Okay, I really liked that donation. That was clever and neat. Edit 5: ~End I cannot *IMAGINE* the sheer skill necessary for this run. Nice going, Oats!
"RNG manipulation" reminds me of a VERY old trick: in the original Space Invaders arcade game, the number of shots you fired affected how many points you got from shooting flying saucers!
Speaking of the internal battery dying, I had a copy of Zelda 1 that had a bad battery. It was really sad, but I just got good enough to finish the game in one sitting.

Super Metroid impossible: the only speedrun where you actually have time to hear the boss music properly
I can't believe this was streamed in 2020. It feels like fucking years ago
Feels like I’m watching a time before an apocalypse
@@solidlink97 well, that's a way to put it
A relic of the old world.
Super Metroid: Where the Heck is the Varia Suit
nah mate everyone knows the Varia Suit was just a myth, it was never in super metroid.
Yeah everybody just uses gravity suit instead
Ridleeyyyy? WHERE is my SUPER SUIT?
I absolutely adore how the crowd is on the edge of their collective seat the entire run. The gasp, they cheer, they chant the runner's name, there's just so much honest hype, it just makes you smile.
I love that Poo is just here to be the voice of people who have never seen it before. He's the "WTF?" guy on the couch.
I love it, like when he did it on the Pepsi Man run few events back.
Poo must be strategizing the frame perfect moment to kick the console.
Lol
I would have said stomp the console

Carcinogen's resident evil 7 run is just as good when it comes to the couch commentary
Oats is such a talented runner. That was a riveting run from start to finish. Amazing!
This is my favorite run ever in GDQ history, and I’ve watched dang near all of them. It is everything you could want in a run at this event.
GrandPooBear: I'm all for saving the Animals.
Also GrandPooBear: Kills all the Yoshis he can Kill.
Yoshis aren’t animals, they’re tools to be used and then discarded :p
Yoshies are tools, not animals
not just kills them all, but feels it is his personal requirement to BOO any level that requires him to finish with a Yoshi LUL
I disagree strongly
That's what Yoshi gets for not paying his taxes.

so, have you done it ?
the rising, MASSIVE donation counter, the bidding war, the superhuman (pun intended) gameplay... this is my favorite part of any GDQ. i love this community.
Okay, putting the varia suit behind Ridley at the deepest depths of Zebes is like the perfect troll
That alone is impossible
Only took one of the best players in the world multiple attempts
It would be a troll if you put the gravity suit there and the varia in tourian
No, the real troll is people up voting your comment to heaven so this is spoiled for people as soon as they click on the video :P
riiiiiiight after literally the entirety of norfair
49:40 The guy that screamed OH MY GOD
That man just had his mind blown
fuckin Joseph Joestar was watching it live
No spoilers, but the Ridley fight had me on the edge of my proverbial seat. That was some serious skill there. I wish I could've watched it live!
I was hoping he would do it 1st time or at least 2nd time. That would have gotten his run in just under 2 hours. Still obviously very impressive.
I did watch it live ! It was awesome. Oats handle it like a pro, which he is.
wtf spoilers
And I was always told "Being good at videogames will never help anyone"
3 million dollars. Three. Million.
Ya'll are fuckin' legends.
HA HA HA! 3 millions, 3!
It’s a hell of an achievement
“Why would you be scared, oats, Phantoon’s never done ANYTHING bad to you EVER.”
I just about hacked a lung out laughing at that sarcasm
I only discovered GDQ last year. I'm gonna have to go back and search for the cause of this sarcasm.
Keimdhall did you find it?

Here in 2022 and this optimism didn’t age well
This host announcer guy has the best announcer voice. Especially with that jacket!

This rom hack was superbly done too. That's why it's rare to find rom hack runs, not many garner respect on their design. It was a delight.
The only problem for me is than it loses originality after the phantoon fight
Oats and goats was the last person to perform live in person at a gdq as of rn. Damn i miss the in person stuff
that perfect item spawn and placement at 2:06:20 lol
Getting the Varia Suit felt very satisfying.
Better late than never!
That was a RAMBO level of complexity. I got speechless with Ridley fight. The precise moonwalks and shots, damn bro

43:49 New record
Holy shit. One of the best speed runs I’ve ever seen.
I love the very genuine camaraderie coming from the couch. Andy going over and giving Oats a massage to loosen him up after a couple of tough Ridley fights was particularly heartwarming.
Amazing! Probably the most entertaining closing to a GDQ event. Bravo to the runner and thanks for the people involved in making this happen!
This is such a great run. Between the rapport on the couch, the sheer talent oats is displaying, and breaking that record. What a showcase.
This game is true NIGHTMARE. An amazing run, 200 minutes of hyper-stressful action...GREAT!
This was such a blast! Absolutely my favorite run in the whole event. Awesome performance and interesting commentary! This was so amazing
Thanks, RUclips algorithm, for reminding me how much I love SM speedruns even though it's been like two years since I watched one.
At first I was put off by this run cause it was a mod and not the actual Super Metroid. But after a while I finally decided to watch it and man am I glad I did. This was the best GDQ run I've seen in a long time.
This is some incredible gameplay, props to the runner and his chill commentary.
That was quite the great combination of crowd, hosts/commenters, and runner. Really entertaining from all sides.
This is my favorite speed run, I could watch this over and over again
Metroid: Samus' Inferno

What are people in the crowd yelling?

Orb
Yeah that took me a while to figure out. Also while we're at it what's the backstory behind ''orb''?
@@speedude0164 it just seems to be something said anytime anything ball-like appears in Metroid. You hear it a lot in Metroid Prime whenever someone uses the infinite speed glitch. I'm not sure where/how it all started

Oats is a bloody machine, that was amazing
Such an amazing run, I am glad to see such a feat from Oats and I am glad to see so much raised for charity
Best runner, crew, commentators and crowd I've ever seen, so much momentum and skill, the deserved last run, keep your good stuff up
57:00 Boss fight, multiple indications of Samus moonwalking. Epic
Game này mình xem hoài không thấy chán cảm ơn nhà phát hình video clip này rất có ý nghĩa một thời tuổi thơ
This was just so cool and so incredible. MUCH respect.
“How many people have beat this” “one” bruh
Such an amazing run by an incredible runner. Well played Oats!!
What a murderous romhack... Oats killed it, for sure
Really nice of Samus herself to take some time to donate after one of the deaths at Ridley
36:40 That jacket is sweet
What an awesome run! Congrats to GDQ and all the wonderful runners for the ten years (a bit later). You all are an inspiration.
i love seeing how the gaming community comes together for such a good cause! I want to go to the next GDQ
I remember when oats was a rocket league streamer
I met him when he had the Ceres' record and I don't think any other #1's in SM yet. It's been awesome seeing how far he's come.
GrandPOOBear is such a charisma machine, he can bring hype to any crowd. Love that guy.
What a legend, great speedrun!!!!
ive heard them say kill or save the animals for years and never knew what it meant
Do you know now?
Amazing run, that took some major skill!
Fantastic run guys! Couldn’t be more proud of GDQ. Thank you.
This was an amazing run to watch
So glad that around 2 and a half years after the last in person GDQ run, we're finally getting them back in a few days.
In 10 years we’ve raised over 21 million dollars for cancer
Just wanted to say you guys are really amazing! Thank you for always putting on an amazing show and supporting all the charities. Much love from Los Angeles!
it is an honor to finish GDQ with this level of racing and in metroid. Congratulations for your achievement!!

Rewatching this in May 2020, Poo's joke about people calling in sick/"working from home" to watch GDQ hits a LOT different now.
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooow I get it. I was like "why the heck are people cheering at seemingly random stuff during a boss fight?" Then I saw how close they were to 3 mil! :D
That was incredible, Oats rule !
This just gave me 2 hours, 23 minutes and 42 seconds of anxiety.
Very fun to watch👑 You make a difference.
Watching this just reminds of how much of a true masterpiece Super Metroid was in the SNES era. A truly epic journey.
awesome run and awesome situation there
Such an awesome run! Great job dude
Super Metroid: If you’re nothing without the suit then you don’t need it.
It's a shame spore spawn isn't fought more often. 2nd best theme in SM aside from Brinstar Depths IMO
The greatest GDQ run ever
And now, Its Super Metroid Possible.
I love the hypeman in the crowd
I'm so proud of this community.
