Games Done Quick Express is our new mini-event series, expanding upon GDQ's two main events. GDQx 2018 took place at TwitchCon 2018, benefiting the TwitchCon Charity Plaza, from October 26th-28th.
So I did the math. At 2:01:23 Andy decides not to check the big chest. At 2:04:11, he discovered the boots were necessary. It then took until 3:01:35 to find the boots. So if it would have taken 30 seconds to get the boots the first time, he would have saved 57 minutes and 54 seconds to get a new finish time of 2 hours, 18 minutes, and 28 seconds.
It was a bad decision to not check in a randomizer showcase like this, and Oats knew it when he said "Glad you saved those frames..."
It would've been a colossal loss for us as that one hour between the moments was full of entertainment.
Ahem.
22:52
@hongmeiling8219 As a randomizer player I can safely say it's too true. I've had this exact thing happen in link to the past, ff4, and kh2 lol. That last item is always in a place you either thought you got everything or just don't want to get
(Samus picks up Book of Mudora)
"...The hell am I supposed to do with this?"
hahhaha
samus can't actually read, she picks up the book and just shrugs
@@pendularnuncius2618 She can only read bird language
@@shinysamurott613 So she only can read tweets?
@@jokeryoshikage9051 That was good. Fuckin hell my sides hurt
I love the irony of the Ice Rod being submerged in lava.
Also finding hi jump boots at prolly the highest mapped item location in the game. And not sure if ironic, but a donation by "the fallen one" after moldorm was lulz
And the Fire Rod near water
@@xdarrenx first one is ironic
I'd expect high jump boots someplace high, means someone used them, so not ironic, just poetically unfortunate
Find someone who looks at you the way Andy looks at Oats
I feel like it goes both ways in this scenario
I literally came here to say this lmao
They’re so cramped, when they look at each other it’s like a foot away. So intimate lmao
Find somebody who laughs at your jokes the way Andy laughs at Oats's.
Oats just slaughters him for three straight hours.
Damn you beat me to this comment by 5 years lmfao
Having to 'waste' an hour looking for the boots was actually nice in showing off all the chest locations in ALTTP, so could be useful if any watcher decides to do the challenge themselves one day :)
These two have a really good dynamic between them.
i was gonna comment something very similar to that, haha. It'd be neat to see them both stream together again.
You have decent videos, thanks. Not a lot of subs for what you make.
"good thing you seved those frames" after a 30 minute+ search is probs the most scarcastic clapback ive heard from this gdqx XD full savage, loved the run guys it was great
"So did you want to be a Metroid speedrunner or a Link to the Past speedrunner?"
"Yes."
It's not both.
it's YES!

2:01:06 - Andy talks about how messing up movement in Super Metroid can make you look like the "biggest idiot". In 40 seconds time, everyone will be giving him a round of applause. No-one knows that, in those 40 seconds, he's made a decision which will turn out to have cost them almost an hour by the end of the run.
Man, I feel sorry for him; that was actually the right call when going for an out-and-out PB/WR attempt (of _course_ you pick the strategy that saves a few frames and hope RNG goes your way, that's standard), but will wind up being one of the go-to examples of when taking a safer strategy at the cost of a few frames makes more sense in an exhibition setting like this.
Still, this is a great run to watch, the boots saga made for a lot of tense entertainment, and I'm going to be following both of them on Twitch!
I love how the tracker clicked the boots icon a bunch of times as if to say WE HAVE THEM happily.
A very good troll seed and a great run even despite that.
46:18 “cuz you don’t wanna miss a location that have the thing you get stuck behind”
Two hours later: skips boots
I’ve loved how much foreshadowing is in this run
This run is also known as "mom says it's my turn on the emulator" any%
more like "mom says it's my turn on the emulator" 100%
@qaydrin Oh thats cool to know. but owning original game lets you to emulate anything you want so, have you neigh sayers‼‼
I'd just call it "mom says it's my turn%"
Except that it is not on an emulator.
They are playing on a real, genuine SNES.
@@1313eable using an SNES cartridge that lets them play an SD card where you copy ROM files to. It's not an emulator, but the game itself isn't real so it's essentially the same thing in the end.
I get 2 hours in and see Andy entering Ganons tower and there's an hour and ten minutes left on the run and I think "man something is about to go horribly wrong"
I'm impressed with Andy's extensive knowledge of SM and SM randos.
Highlight for this run: Super Boots/A Boots to the Past, this speedrun exists solely for the donation puns (Boots crisis starts at 2:03:47)
And not resolved until almost an hour later. Amazing.
To add to the comment chain for any future viewers.
The moment it all went wrong: 1:52:05
Karma then took the wheel for a good hour.
This is still hilarious to watch. The boots crisis.
Now I'm imagining a buddy cop movie starring Link and Samus.
This should absolutely be in Smash Ultimates story mode.
"Processing denotes the victim suffered hemmorhagic shock before being entirely exsanguinated. What do you make of the situation, partner?"
"Chy-ah!"
@@danielgehring7437 YES
I imagine Samus acting like Gamora in Guardians of the Galaxy, while Link and Navi would be Groot and Rocket.
I'm thinking more like Samus and Link go to White Castle.
This entire run could've been a whole hour faster, but instead it turned into karmic schadenfreude of the highest caliber. He passed up those stupid boots literally _minutes_ before running into the one thing he needed them for.
Pass by the chest(big one at the top) at 2:01:00
Needs the boots at 2:04:08
It's not really accurate to say he should have just taken that one quick sideline to that one chest, because it could have just as easily not been in that chest and he could have lost time instead. It could have been in any of all of the chests he checked; you have to allow time for diversions to many of those.
This run is so great to watch the second time, listening to their commentary, knowing how screwed they are without the boots
I love the chemistry between the two runners. Makes it so much more fun to watch.
1:35:55 "All we need is the hook shot and we can beat the game."
*sees we're not even half way through"
-.-
Amazing how an old married couple plays games like this.
Andy: Enters Ganon's Tower at about 2 hours without boots
Me: "But there's like an hour left; how would tha-"
Key: Is on the torch
Welp
gg ez no re
@@fullmetal7984 unfortunately, saving frames caused the loss of even more frames
Great concept. Great games. Great runners. Great speedrun.
This exactly what an INCREDIBLE randomizer run should be.
This is by far the most entertaining run I've ever seen from a GDQ event. Oats and Andy have an amazing comedic chemistry.
I wish we could get another with them.
me too!
Only a year and a half late to say it, but hey
We can't blame Andy too much afterall, missing the boots let us kill the animals. Gotta save those frames!
The moment he passed up the Moon Pearl chest, I knew he was going to need whatever was in it.
This is one of the most legendary runs ever. Back again to watch it. Love their chemistry, it's so entertaining!
2:17:28 I'm living for oats' sarcasm "I'm still looking for your stupid boots..." "well that opens the door for, nothing actually!"
i find 2:52:47 to be so hilarious
in the middle of the whole boots crisis, andy going to the item screen and just deflating because he suddenly realizes no cane of somaria
thanks I was trying to figure out what was going on lol
These two are just as entertaining as Andy and Patty. Just wholesome folks having fun doing the thing they love and sharing it with the world. More please.
Alternate universe where the hero of time helps samus save the future by helping her find things she lost in the past, and in return she helps him save his timeline.
Sounds like a plot similar to Endgame.
Avoiding a chest to save a few frames in a RANDOMIZER is...just oof.
especially when each dungeon has 1 major item in it.
Yeah that's a gamble maybe worth in a race, but definitely not safe for marathon.
Although it is a low probability for the big key to be boots or cane locked. 6/27 I believe?
Yeah its a completely stupid move, especially since HE should know so much better. In a normal run i get it, but not in a randomizer. The few frames he might save don't matter there.
One does not simply try to save frames in a randomizer marathon.
i mean they still finished under estimate, so its not a huge deal ^^ more run to watch
All these people making boots jokes are just soleless
Watch your tongue. You need some heeling.
That joke was about as bad as some wrestling heels good sir!
Nice one ... I got a real kick out of it.
these comments are laced with good puns. i'd add to it, but my tongue is tied
Time to call on Nike, the victory goddess so that I can shoehorn TWO puns!
Knowing the total time ahead of watching this allows you to feel the tension right before they realize they missed something important.
“The Boots are going to be here, I have faith.” Technically you got the geographical location down, just not the right dimension.
wow this really looks like a game I'd have played in a dream as a kid, surreal
"Don't you guys have boots?"
Lol at 3:46. "Please Link... You must... Save the kingdom... Here's 20 dollars... I leave the kingdom in your hands."
The found the Ice Rod in a room of lava, and the Fire Rod in a room full of water.....
It's called safe storage. You've seen what happened to the cave the ice rod was stored in for Vanilla LTTP, haven't you?
I LOVE the irony
When they found the boots and Andy said "to save....the frames" I laughed so hard that I actually cried :D
Turned it into 100% run just for the kicks
“I bet that guy TAS could”😂😂😂
@@scottrauch1261 He never seems to be on any leaderboards, though. Wonder why that is.
@@CalebTibster ive heard rumours that he uses "tools" or something. Im not sure what that means but he might be cheating? Or just using a controller with macros or something
These guys crack me up ... very entertaining run, and as always, great team behind the scene making this awesome event happen year after year!
Love all the speculation about the pedestal hype toward the end. Whenever it was long dead due to the red cane being on library which required the boots. So much fun it all is though to watch and love the combo rando.
When I first got introduced to randomizers, I wasn't that interested. But now I think they are really cool and interesting and this one is one of the most impressive. Great run, guys!
these guys are one of the more funnier deadpan duos
I can't believe nobody went with "Bootsngoots"
Good one
Man...finding the boots was his "sole" purpose...
At least at the end he chucks some converse-ation into this speedrun.
Love the dynamic between these guys and although I'm sure it was painful to get basically every single item BUT those dang boots, it made for the perfect bad luck entertainment. Now go take a nap tired boiz.
Runner introduction starts at 0:10.
Run starts at 0:25.
and they finally find the boots at 3:01:30
They never introduced the couch haha
what is the seed?
10:00 the foreshadowing....
Ringbearer79 yes! The expectation of early-ish boots when seeing the cane in library. And than the GT troll. Perfect.
@@michelvanderlinden8363 The sad part is that Andy is very possibly the best LTTP Randomizer player in the circuit. The fact that he's only one of like, 3 people that can pull off the "hover" trick is testament to this. There's a few other VERY great LTTP Randomizer players that are in the LTTP Randomizer tournaments...but Andy is always a large favorite. That he'd miss those boots really is an actual shame. :P
And 22:56
@@ruggedlemmings9163 everybody makes mistakes, and sometimes those mistakes lead to crazy fun hijinks. . . For everyone but andy.
This is probably my favorite speed run ever the chemistry between the two runners and the combination of the game makes it something I come back too often
This duo is low-key some of the funniest commentary I’ve seen in speed running. Wish we could have heard the audience laughing.
SMZ in a nutshell.
*Runner:* I have a 17/22 chance of everything going well.
*_One hour later..._*
two games, one of which I am very good at, the other I am decent at. amalgamated into something that I'm not sure should exist
@2:41:09 perfect timing XD "Here's 20$" as a red rupee (20-rupee) falls from the heavens xD
I enjoyed this run infinitely more because of how trolly the seed was, the puns of donators, and the banter between Andy and Oatsngoats.
Seeing Samus and Link collect each others items is so strange. It's like something I would have dreamt up when I was 11.
These guys are like professional Game Grumps.
The reaction by Andy seeing the GT big key on the pillar was priceless...I laughed so hard.
I think that i watch this once every 2 months. This group is hilarious.
Andy and oats both seem like genuine good guys. I like this.
"If we decide 'we should skip this' it will probably be a good item" self fulfilled prophecy
This took me many nights to watch, but it was so worth it. Very entertaining, nice job peeps
It's the "Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell" of video games
very charismatic players, great run
I come back to this run every so often, since I love anything that's a co-op randomizer, even more so if it's a crossworld rando.
Im sad there isn't any more Andy + Oatsngoats content. They are such a dynamic duo. I know nothing about speed running but I could watch these guys and their chemistry all day.
This is probably the coolest speed run I’ve ever seen
This run was a lot of fun, despite the long search for the boots.
55:25realls shows how chill these guys are
Man, this run sure had Andy seeing RED
...I'll show myself out
Best run I've seen in a while. I'll have to keep my eye out for these guys from now on
Andy playing Super Metroid vs Oatsngoats playing a Link to the past race.
55:20 Literally burst out in laughter in this moment.
Kelpsey sittin' back there just chillin'
Interesting thing, if there were a Super Metroid/Metroid Fusion combo, by not saving the animals at the end of Super Metroid, you doom yourself in Fusion.
I love the SM/ALttP randomizer. Seeing it speedrun is even crazier. Keep up the hard work you guys! :)
Those secret levels in Super Metroid almost looked like Zelda III
I come back to this run once or twice every year, and every time, I find myself shouting, "ARE THOSE TWO *STILL* LOOKING FOR THOSE DAMN BOOTS?!"
Man this is great, I'd love to see a Super Metroid // Castlevania SotN randomizer, the TRUE Metroidvania!
imagine falling into a sewer, finding 3 chest. one containing a map to "somewhere", a small key, and 5 *MISSILES*
Ok, I’m going to actually mark my stupid calendar tonight so I stop missing these by... like... days. Can’t wait to watch this; thanks so much for posting these, GDQ!
I love patty, "Where's your hover God now!?!"
2:49:39
They go along so well, it's even more fun to watch than each individal speedrunner
I love this! 2 of my favorite games ever & randomized. This is the best!
I wonder how fun it would be if they tied missiles to arrows, power-bombs to zelda-bombs and the healthbars to eachother. :P
2:04:11 that happening, with this audience...the single most PERFECT "rando gonna rando" moment in history.
Legendary run, keep coming back
I can't believe we're at the point where rom hackers are able to COMBINE games into one. Holy shit.
@@redgyrados2000 its still unreal lol
@@redgyrados2000 i gotta wonder if there was some crossover in developing these games that made this possible, because it seems like a hell of a coincidence.
@@coastersplus It sort of is. Has to do with the memory locations of the items, they're completely different from game to game so they're able to randomize them. That's the way I heard it, anyway. There is an explanation for how it works, though, probably on the site where you can transform the two ROMs (Zelda and Metroid) into the combo randomizer
Those two runners got such an amazing synergie.. its even more entertaing to listen to the commentary of both then watching the game.. :D
You could say it's "a Link Between Worlds"
I'm not apologizing
This is a cool as hell hack. Imagine being able to play both game simultaneously. That will be super sick.
They're like the speedrun version of Conan O'Brian and Andy Richter.
Absolutely love the SM/ALTTP Combo Randomizer - have watched several runs and races of it. A race at a future GDQ event would be hype!
37:37 “I didn’t need to grab those but they looked so shiny” *grabs 10 arrows* “did those also look shiny?” i love both of these runners and their chemistry with each other
Every time you'd fire the bow and miss, there was a small twinge of "aw, hate that wasted durability." I've been playing too much BotW.
This is like golf style commentary... And I love it.
these two have a come a long way in terms of being comfortable with themselves infront of a crowd since 2017.
These two have a great dynamic!
