Yeah, if you're confused about the devil offering butter to her, back in those times, butter was a luxury food. It took a lot of cream from a lot of milk to make it, so if you just had a single cow or a few goats, it wasn't as though you could just churn your own all the time.
According to folklore about witches/witchcraft, witches used the fat of unbaptized children to make their “flying ointment”; and baby Sam was indeed unbaptized.; hence, he was killed and, well, made into the ointment. Witches also had the ability to turn themselves into a hare (the “rabbit” you kept seeing), the power to blight crops and to sour milk. All of which were well represented in the movie. Eggers did his homework!
@@Sara01977 Very well could have been! But if you look at the very old witchcraft lore, there’s a Scottish witch, Isobel Gowdie, who claims she (and many others) turned into a hare by chanting: ‘I shall go into a hare, With sorrow and sych and meickle care; And I shall go in the Devil’s name, Ay while I come home again.’ And so methought the hare was the witch in disguise.
Such a dark, gritty, depressing watch, in a great way. No jump scares n cheap thrills, only real terror. Incredibly well made horror movie. Looking forward to Eggers’ version of Nosferatu
About the script: Eggers also pulled chunks of dialogue from real-life Salem witch trial accounts, journals, and other written documents from the time.
About the W in Witch being styled with two V’s, that’s how it used to be written. there was no V (they used f instead). the shape was a “U” sound, hence two of them being a “double u”
You've probably figured this out: in the 16th and 17th centuries, spellings could vary, and in early forms of typesetting with engraving, certain characters served a different function, for example, the interchangeable use of S and F in print. The use of the double V V is perhaps only to give more of the feel of the time and King James period english.
What I like about this guy, is that he appreciates mood. - So many other "reactors" recline on expensive vibrating chairs under fluoroscent lights like in an office - and then expect to be gratuited for it. CREATE A MOOD!!
Imagine being so religiously weird & extreme that a colony of freaking _17th century Puritans_ kicks you out, lol. William's sin of pride is what led his family to their end. The colony judge even called him prideful in the decree. Having said that, one can certainly see how living on a knife's edge in a harrowing 1600's wilderness could lead a young woman to eventually say "F**k it" and sign the book in order to live deliciously.
I don’t think Thomasin was evil, at least not throughout the movie. I think at the end, she realized with no family, no food including no crops or livestock, a young girl would never make it on her own in the harsh New England wilderness. She essentially gave up and gave in to sell her soul to the Devil. She felt she had run out of options to survive. Even if she somehow made it back to the group in the beginning, the probably would’ve burned her at the stake for being a witch.
What made it more unsettling to me is that its script is from actual writings in 1600’s. As far as witches go, they steal babies and take baths in the baby fat, which returns them to looking younger. So the old crone bathing in Sam’s blood is the same young witch that seduces Caleb. The rabbit was the witches familiar. It is evil and cannot be killed and that’s why you didn’t like its eyes.
I can't place exactly why, but this remains one of my favorite scary movies of all time. best performances, incredible dialogue and legitimate psychological horrors, watching a Puritan family fall apart in the great wilderness of New England 1600s.
It was traditional in the Puritan colonies for teenage girls to be traded off to work as servants for other families. Her parents would have sent her away at some point even if none of the events of the film happened
from some evidence apparently they said the witch/witch trials in new England was due to a certain kind of mold from corn/wheat that would cause hallucinations....I feel like this film explores that but I really couldn't tell you the deeper meanings behind it. It's def a weird film but still enjoyable. I may just not be deep enough to get it lol 🤷🏼♀
this is a great film to watch deeper meaning breakdowns of! there's a list of sins attributed to each character that allows their downfalls to occur. I love this movie. top 5 horror for me.
This movie has so many layers. I love it, honestly. The ending kind of is gross to me, because in some celtic and old witchcraft lore, the way for a witch to fly is to consume the rendered fat of a virgin child, and the stole they baby at the start of the movie. Just another layer of yuck LOL
If that’s the case, because all of those witches are flying at the end, I’m going to assume it’s the twins who went missing not the baby from the beginning.
this movie is cool cause you learn more and more every time you watch. like the rabbit is the witch. is the witch real or they just have bad luck. do witches cause bad luck?
You should react to The Lighthouse but don't try to interpret the movie (unless you know your Greek Mythology) because doing so will make you lose your mind. The Lighthouse is simply a experience to behold. The Lighthouse uses metaphorical storytelling.
7:28 so what? As long as they dont procreate then there is no side effects or moral dilema in incest. Me and my sister experimented with each other some when we were little girls Anyway, I like that you are actualy inteligent and watched it with subtitles, unlike most channels. Other amricans didnt understand anything from the movie because of the dialect

The actor who plays Caleb, one of the best child performances I've ever seen onscreen.
The only role he ever played.
If you want to see his polar opposite, watch "Gretel & Hansel". Makes Anakin from the prequels look like Tom Hanks.
Totally agree, for me it's up there with Haley Joel Osment in The Sixth Sense
Caleb's death scene is one of my favorites in film history.
The black Phillip actor goat was such a menace he’s now banned from ever being in a film/on set 😂
"Do you not see your nipples bleeding?" Dumbledore asked calmly.

Me too, can’t wait to see Nosferatu!

I love this movie and watch it every October. The Black Philip reveal at the end is great.

Who thinks he’s ready for MOTHER! ?
I agree!
I was genuinely just thinking that I’d love to see home react to Mother! while watching this video. I also just adore Mother!
The scenne when Black Philip speaks is incredible
15:10 They're "bleeding" him to let out the fever. Medical science in those days was like this.
This movie was the goat. I had to say it because nobody else did, and it has to be said about this movie!
I see what you did there 😂

Such a good atmospheric and slow burn film with the authentic folklore added. Great for spooky month
You need to see "The Lighthouse".
Just watch Robert Eggers' entire catalog, brilliant across the board. Not to mention his rendition of NOSFERATU is coming this December
Kate Dickie and Ralph Ineson both starred in The Green Knight, the titular role being voiced by Ineson 😁
Looks at the two-V’s typeface. “I’m assuming that’ll come back later”.
What???

One of my favorite folk horror movies.. The acting is so good and the buildup is so tense with a great payoff. One of my favorites.
I really love this movie so much and I think Robert one of the great directors of the current ❤

The Lighthouse is another good one by Eggers. Brilliant acting by Dafoe and Pattison.
I could listen to Ralph Ineson read the back of a shampoo bottle.
It was traditional in the Puritan colonies for teenage girls to be traded off to work as servants for other families. Her parents would have sent her away at some point even if none of the events of the film happened
At the end homegirl had nothing to lose..no fam, no home..let's fly 😂
You must watch Eggers’ Lighthouse! The acting is amazing by Pattinson and Defoe.

We appreciate your insights. We look forward to see more.

A true Hallowe'en movie.

Eggers’ best

Nice. And people think Hereditary is freaky. This movie is tops for freakiness, to me...

or is the corn. check out the fungus on corn... hallucgenic properties?!

The Lighthouse uses metaphorical storytelling.
"Finding something for herself" - selling her soul to Satan and eternal damnation 😅
It's one of those movies where nothing good happens to any of the characters.
