When me and my sister (who is a big House fan) were watching this, we weren't paying attention to what was going on. Then when House stepped up on to the balcony, our hearts were racing. He then jumped and she gasped. But after that, we just pissed ourselves laughing.

We love House for his genius and his frailties ... we fight his addiction along with him. The writers really nailed this one when they accompanied this powerful scene with Gabriel's amazing cover. House argued that we have to raise the bar ever higher as we get older in order to "Feel The Thrill" and remind ourselves that WE ARE ALIVE !

Then he jumped to the pool, to have fun with the young guys who were there, because the barman said "they were young and had no worries". That's what he wanted to feel. I interpreted the scene this way, probably your point of view is right too.

i remember watching this episode and pausing it right when he was jumping like WTF lol but then glad i finished it. the way it was set up was a perfect mind fudge . you really thought he was gonna try to end it only to turn out to just be house being house. a perfect moment for sure lol its a great moment where the scene and music purposely makes the audience expect one thing only to completely get another.a masterful act of subverting expectations
