    In this video we're talking about why Las Terrenas, Samana in the Dominican Republic has become so popular in the last couple of years.
    We make our way around Las Terrenas, from Playa Bonita to Playa Las Ballenas and in town to talk about what everyone loves about this town.
    We talk about how amazing the beaches are in Las Terrenas as well as different water sports (surfing and kite boarding) you can do here.
    We also talk about the unique transportation options, we've rented a quad bike (ATV) which is a common way to get around on the roads here. You can also drive UTVs (buggies), golf carts and of course cars and motorbikes.
    We discuss real estate options and prices and what you can get for condos and villas.
    Lastly we head into the main part of town to Plaza Centro Colonial. A building that isn't historic (but looks like it is) and looks like it's straight out of Spain. We have happy hour drinks at a place called the Garage Bar. While here we talk about the European influence and feel of Las Terrenas.

    I feel that the main concern with Las Terrenas growing and becoming more popular is that it may gradually turn into another Punta Cana. I personally love the "small town" charm that characterizes Las Terrenas, I just hope that developers and real estate folks don't ruin the essence of the town by proliferating the whole area with high-priced condos, villas, and hotels.

    • @life107familyfitnessboxing8

      I visited there in 2004 and it was totally different. I personally preferred it when it was undeveloped and natural. There are more options for accommodation with it being developed. They usually trash the place when over developed and I hope this don't happen there.

    • @DelightfulTravellers
      @DelightfulTravellers  2 года назад +3

      We feel like it's in a perfect spot right now with development. But there sure is a lot of land that I imagine developers will snag up. I can't see it becoming another Punta Cana but there's no doubt about it that it will develop more. It seems like it's just getting started really - Trevor

    And to answer your question at 18:45 , most Dominicans understand very well the importance and impact of tourism and foreign investment, foreigners aren’t the only ones investing. A lot of Dominican internal wealth is being reinvested and Dominicans who live in the US are also major investors including myself. I think the growth is great , and I’m so proud of the advancement my country has made in the last 25 years , but like the Japanese say , don’t drink too much. The growth is remarkable but we need to also think about the long term and ensure the social responsibility remains strong and is fortified even more.

      Very interesting Luis, we have been hearing that LT in particular has become possibly the most sought after area for tourists (buying and renting) in the Caribbean. While prices were very reasonable a few years ago the prices have been increasing. LT seems to have small micro communities within the town that feature different cultural aspects. As you said I hope that long term effects are being fully considered.

      Let's not hide the "sun with a finger" a Dominican saying. Yes, development is great, however without good urban planning is disastrous and the basic in fractures that goes with it. The terrible corrupt governments of the past 20 years and continues. Dominicans have always had their beach villas in Samana and their mountain retreat in Jarabacoa, of course wealthy Dominicans, just as wealthy New Yorkers in the Hamptons or Bostonians in Martha's Vineyards. Dominicans have always invested in their country. What I don't want to happen is these massive hotels of 600 rooms, all-inclusive, only benefiting the hotel companies, leaving crumbs to the communities. Samana is a very small territory and a fragile eco-system, needs to be protected, we all know the terrible damage and greed of our politicians, have done already, is up to us to be guardians. The history of Samana goes from the French that wanted to build their "empire" port city to the US who wanted to establish a military zone but had to settle for Guantanamo.

    • @LuisRodriguez-tm1ld
      @LuisRodriguez-tm1ld 2 года назад +1

      @@louisescano3961 the hotels aren’t leaving crumbs to the community when Dominicans who work there can make hundreds of dollars in tips which is life changing. Millions of Dominicans are out of poverty because of those hotels, did every single citizen benefit equally ? No , and that is ok , it will never be perfect , as long as we keep moving forward and improving are country will be good. And all of what you’re saying is definitely discussed and recognized

    • @louisescano3961
      @louisescano3961 2 года назад +3

      @@LuisRodriguez-tm1ld You know that the service industry is the worse paid industry in general. First, most of the TOP management is not even Dominican. The benefits that this hotels companies have, with all the tax breaks, all inclusive are geared to a particular public, that pays a sum of money, in their countries and will not likely venture out. You think they are that generous to be tipping, is an all inclusive. How many of the staff is Dominican, as other industries in the country you know very well who are employed. To develop a country is through education, innovation, research. We are a rich country with talented people that have to emigrate, because of a corrupt governments that need to keep a mass population uneducated, in public assistance and given hand outs, painting themselves as demi-Gods saviors. I don't want to make this into a debate and certainly I value the amazing job of Trevor and Anna, my apologies for using your platform for this. God bless.

    BTW, my 1st visit to Las Terrenas was back in 1980 (just a 15 year old teen) and immediately fell in love. It was a almost 4 hr trip from the capital. There was just Portillo as a resort development and you could buy 1.5 -2 acres of land beachfront for about US$10,000 (That land would cost now over US$1 million (not very smart of my dad not to buy, because to him “it was way to far” to ever develop...not long after, he “invested” 6 times that on a 600 sq meter land -no beach front- in Nagua or about half way from Cabarete to Las terrenas). Las time I was there, was 6 years ago and, from your videos, there’s definitely a real state boom👍 I hope one day to retire there🙏

    Questions for your next Q/A - How do you handle your cash flow (do you go to a local bank and withdraw DOP every so often?). Do you pay in cash? I am curious if you use a credit card also (asking these questions because we have been dinged exchange fees even on a more recent trip) and while all part of travel just wondering what works for you especially since you have been there for many months. Also are safe's available in your rentals and do you feel that you have adequate security (especially with your equipment). Others might have also asked these type of questions, thanks.

    I'm Dominican, raised in Las Terrenas; it is indeed changing, exponentially more so in the last 2 years than ever before. The development of it is seen differently depending on whom you ask.
    The born and raised are happy to see money flowing more constantly, and the new opportunities that comes with it are also great for those struggling.. But those who came from elsewhere and found Las Terrenas don't want their "heaven on earth" to become mainstream or known..
    Terrenas is a charming place, but as soon as you pack it with people (as it happens for example in Spring Break or Christmassy) it looses a lot of its charm. The town and roads were not built to withstand so many people and vehicles using it at once, and because of that, every time the town is full, it becomes chaotic in multiple ways.

    Hi guys another great video. Trevor very smooth drone shooting. Excellent. Samana is a very special peninsula with amazing history from pre-colonization, amazing cave paintings, dating 5,000 years, exquisite marble quarry, Napoleon wanted to convert Samana into the port capital of the French America's empire. The blueprints are in the library of the US Congress. I worry that over development, especially without urban planning would ruin the magic of this very special corner of the world, even the giants of the north Atlantic who call it home, returning every each to birth and mate. The humpback whales.

    This is so nice to see. I am thinking about investing in the DR but I was more leaning towards downtown Santo Domingo or
    Piantini( where I was born) But I now live in Florida and I am in my 40’s and thinking about my retirement and would like it to live there. But I think I might leaning towards Las terrenas. Santo Domingo is soooo expensive right now. Wow! The amount of expats is insane and the prices have risen to another level! Hopefully Las terrenas stays like this for a while.

    Another delightful video 😄 I found LT 10 years ago. To be honest at first I didn't want to tell anyone about it...lol . It was heaven on earth for me and I didn't want to have it become like punta cana. I am happy for the growth and the income it provides to the people but keep the big resorts away please. My guess on the villa would be 850+. Question for Q&A, do you believe rentals have jacked price or lower prices because of covid? Do all of the rental places have a safe, or security of some sort? How do you secure credit cards/ cash/ passport, etc.

    What a “bad luck” you guys have. I see did you get to see both playa Bonita lagoons (on each extreme), specially the one after punta bonita. Unfortunately, the sea was extremely rough and your viewers didn’t get to appreciate the “lagooness” type of water. You have to go back on a calm day and film again (also, I don’t know if you got about 150 mts further is my favorite spot of Las Terrenas....(A suggestion for your next trip: Playa Esmeralda, across Samana bay, where tourist take a yatch and helicopter trip from Punta Cana just to visit that “still natural” beautiful beach before they build 4 big resorts this coming year). Good luck and thanks for promoting my beautiful country👍🙏🇩🇴😊

    The excess of spa and residential ends up harming the locals, since free public access to the beaches has been reduced and in some cases eliminated, due to the fact that the spas and private projects restrict public access to the beaches.

    • @DCampusano1
      @DCampusano1 2 года назад

      It's both a good thing and a bad thing depending on how you look at it. On one side it's bad for Dominicans because they are losing free access to their own beaches. But on the other hand, privatizing the beaches can be a plus for the environment. Private beaches tend to be much cleaner and better maintained. Unfortunately many Dominicans are careless and lack education, they litter trash on public beaches which has dire consequences for the ocean and the environment. Some public beaches throughout the country look a hot mess and are filthy.
