Not sure if you know this, but you can actually switch weapons while the serpent is harpooned using the hotkeys. As long as you don't use the harpoon again it wont break free. Meaning you can slap him around while he's tethered. Would definitely recommend having a 3 meal stamina bar though, they break free when you run out.
You can also kill them just be keeping them on land. After a short period of time out of the water they just explode. ;D
I started spearing them, pulling them on shore and just waiting if I felt lazy/mean. Serpent soup is a pretty great food in this game.

Another good tip for mining the Chitin on the kraken is to take a stamina potion with you. This way you can keep on mining until the very last second, until the kraken sinks and you're in the water. You can drink your stamina potion just before sinking and swim safely back to your boat. According to a friend you can even drink the potion while swimming, but I'd need some confirmation on that.
@@comateur Someone on another thread also suggested hitting all of the barnacles a few times (just before they break) since breaking them is what triggers the sinking. Get them all down to 1 hit from breaking and you should be able to finish them all.

Just goes to show if he can do it with an empty stomach, then imagine how easier jt would be with a full stamina bar
He also pointed his ship directly into the wind and turned hard right, then put the sails to half....he literally was not moving an inch lol. He also slammed his boat into the creature, jumped off into the water when his boat was moving away from the creature rather than stopping and jumping straight from the boat to the creature.
That's the whole point of these videos. He fucks it up as much as he possibly can while still performing A to B to show you, someone who knows how to do it better, that you should get on your boat and go do it already, scrub. Git gud.
You can be on the Leviathan when it submerges. Absolutely nothing happens to you. No damage. No drowning. Unless you're out of stamina to swim back to ship that is.
maybe that guy on reddit who had a sunken crypt spawn under the water could use this trick to actually reach the entrance lol
I have had the misfortune of drowning afterwards because I ran out of stamina 😂
i always pause and make sure i have some stamina remaining before doing more mining. it doesnt seem to go down unless you keep mining it but i could be wrong. another thing is to just bring a stamina potion and greed farm it.

You have answered my question. I wasn't sure you could drive the boat with a serpent harpooned. I need more chitin as I dumbly made the knife first and haven't seen anymore yet. I did get my boat ruined by a serpent at the edge of swamp and Plains..... I was lucky enough to have my portal stuff but had to get wood for a workbench sneaking around the big Lox... Which was good because my nails and such sank. Luckily the cargo floats as I had 120 Iron scraps on board. I managed to make a new boat and kill one Lox in a huge battle for my life. (I've only beat the 3rd boss and am not ready for the plains yet imo.)
Chitin isn't a consumable resource (yet) but if you are wanting to harvest as much as possible on each kraken, pre damage each barnacle. I two-shot them with an iron pickaxe, so I hit each one once. Then starting furthest from my boat, start popping them. I have yet to have the kraken start shaking before fully breaking the 3rd or 4th barnacle.
Now you can gear out you and your friends even faster!
you can create a knife and harpoon from chitin...

I legit got scare the first I met this dude and was mining the chitin then it just start moving I’ve never ran to land this fast before playing survive games
I first met him while transporting my first shipment of iron ore, my hearth stopped for a moment :D

I know what you mean though. I'm pretty cautious about being in the ocean. Not because of the Levithan, although he is kinda' just floating there, menacingly. Lol! That Sea Serpent though. *shivers*
Make sure you top off on food before doing this. It makes things a lot easier.
if you have other creatures there at land just pull them to the serpent. they will kill it for you while you are waiting. the line is breaking under following circumstances: you start attaking something, you run out of stamina, or you run to fast (at a certain distance the line will break) so if you try hitting the serpent again with the harpoon and you are to far away, the line will instantly break again.
According to the Valheim wiki, each barnacle mined has 10% chance to make the Leviathan retreat. So if you have multiple people, its better to damage the barnacles first, then mine as many barnacle as possible at once.
Pretty sure the wiki is wrong. Found a single Hafgufa so far(thats how they actually called apparently) and he started roaring after I hit 1st barnacle once. I tried to hit others without breaking and he just started sinking.(didnt break a single one up to that point)

@@ABIGD0G every single Levi I've found has started it's submerging cycle the moment I began picking at the barnacles. Every single one.
They have a 10% of sinking EACH time you HIT a barnacle. Not each one fully mined.

Small disclamer from me: Being on the Kraken when he dive doesn't endanger you nor your boat. My to go strategy is to make sure I'm not wet, mine barnacles from the bottom to the top (this way I can mine some extra barnacles when Kraken is already diving) and when I know won't be able to mine anymore, I walk towards ship to regenerate some stamina in case I have to swim a little.
The number of things you can do in this game is just outstanding...
1:40 I was able to mine the barnacles using the Antler axe.

i hope they make a diving mechanic soon. tired of loot dropping to the bottom of the ocean.
They should just make an iron diving belt that when you equip it you can't swim and walk along the bottom instead.
This dude is struggling hard but he keeps himself so professional it’s beautiful. He did it on an empty stomach, on a hill, and had to fight him through the night. Wow, man really heard about this and said, “I need to make a RUclips video and I only have 11 minutes to record”
Small tip: have a stamina mead to bolster your depleted stamina while in the sea to prolong the swimming time, as mining takes a lot of stamina out of you
Agreed, wish i had thought of that earlier and i mined my 1st Levi earlier today; only got 27 Chitin though :( had i the stamina potion i could probably have nabbed another node and had enough for a harpoon, lol
my biggest fear is the ocean or just deep water in general and i have to sail across the ocean to fight the elder and im debating just not risking it bc if i encounter one of these things ill prolly have a panic attack and quit playing
Same, lol. after hearing about Sea Serpents i was dead nervous of sailing beyond the shores. but thankfully i learnt that they are an uncommon sight and generally spawn at night/during storms. im at 200+ days and i only jst ran into my 2nd one earlier today during storm night (just like my 1st)
So I got my friend to play finally and had a gear set for him he wanted to sail around and I said “btw there’s sea monsters in this game” 15 seconds later here comes one and kills us both. We spent 3 hours getting our gear back lmao I’m hooked

I just figured out a good way to mine all the barnacles off the turtles or krakens. You don't even have to jump on your boat. Before he sinks relog. It resets it, even if you go in your boat and goes all the way down, it resets it back up. I tried to build on them but won't let me. Wanted to make a portal on it, but won't even let you build a bench.
I never seen anyone figure this out and I only told you. I got 300 shells or whatever they are in a few hours.
I used a second server to transfer goods and grab/repair items. I would travel around naked and empty bags till I found a turtle or kraken and then grab stuff I needed. Didn't want to lose any items 😂...
I like to pull it to the Swamp because the swamp creatures will kill it for me. But you need at least a fully upgraded iron armor, so you won't be the one being killed. These serpents can be tricky, they can turn their head very fast to the water and if their head is in the water the scales sink, since the itens drop from the head alone. Lucky you to find one so fast and close to the beach, sometimes I traveled for days in-game to find only one, and it's incredibly frustrating if you miss the scales. Also it seems you can only pull it so much inland, the rope always broke when I tried to pull the serpent too much inland to kill it more safely.

I marked my map when I saw my first one and they appear every time I return to the same spot

First time I found a Kraken I drowned. I didn’t know how to get back up on the boat from the water 😔
Raft has a ladder at the rear on left - Karve has a ladder in the middle on left handside :) (not sure about longboat as of yet)

Nice vid! I drug mine down the mouth of a river so that when he went back to the water, he still had to go down the river before he was back into the ocean. This allowed me to walk along the river bank and recover stamina without worrying about him escaping completely.

I freaked out when i saw the kraken for the first time because i realised
1. There's no land on the minimap
2. I saw a pair of eyes under the water
I didnt even get on it and simply gtfo but thankfully I marked it on the map in case i want to go back to it
Your viking neighbors see you come rolling in with a damaged ship, and drag a harpooned sea serpent up the hill to beat it to death. They decide they will avoid arguments with you from now on.
Not to spoil the game or anything but if you get iron armor and poison resist potions with the iron sledge, you're immune to the swamp biome. Add a friend also in iron armor with an iron sword and you own the swamp biome.
So this means you can just grab a cheap ass Karve, hook a serpent, slam that ship into the swamp and stab/crush it to death with ease.
he chased me on the ocean and i was able to crash-land my boat.
i managed to kill it quite easily with my Finewood Bow from the shore as he came close to attack the boat.
Is there a safe method to get chitin without a sea serpent showing up?
I got chitin from using the antler pickaxe, also you are able to get iron using the antler pickaxe.
I also killed my very FIRST sea serpent by leading him over to shallow water at the shore with the boat and killing him there, WAY before I had a harpoon, mine dropped the scales the meat AND a head, which I was able to dive off the boat and get because it was shallow
You don't need a bronze axe. I used the deer antler one but you can only harvest about 10 chitin at a time before you have to find another "island."
Ah ok. Info online said you needed iron, which I knew was wrong, so I assumed you needed bronze but thank you for this 🙂
Thats not a "kraken" those are called Leviathans
The only danger the Kraken poses is diving down while you place your priorities on your chitin harvest instead of your stamina, leaving you drowning in the ocean before you reach the boat. But that's a *you* problem
Another great video! Im so glad to have found your channel, you explain everything so well, and take the time to show how to do things with the minimal level of equipment. Its a heck of a lot easier to do things when you are kitted out in the best armor and weapons in the game. Showing how to do it with lower level resources is such a great help for new players!

3:27 this caused my first death in the game. I didn't know the turtle was gonna submerge so i just stood up there mining away.
I died just before reaching the ladder of my boat.
Took me a while to get back my stuff....
Dieing on the ocean truly sucks
i fought my first sea serpent while flying on the open water through one of the rough sea storms. i was all alone on a supply run and abandoned the rudder of the boat to shoot 30-40 obsidian arrows as i sailed right for a hidden coastline in the fog. Immediately after killing the serpent i jumped back on the rudder and turned as wide as i possibly could as fast as possible, and i kid you not, i missed a coastline full of rocks within inches of completely destroying my battered boat at the very last second. The harpoon seems more practical lol

So far the only complaint I have with Valheim is everything sinking. I've hit deer on land that just launch into the water and the same with necks.

I’ve killed dozens of these at sea and just assumed scales were rare drops because I have one …… now I know they sink 😄 and I’ve had the harpoon the whole time 😅😅
It might be a bit of work to make but you could drag it in to a gated area.
Exactly, build a pen just big enough to hold it and line the sides with stakes. Heck even a gauntlet consisting of 2 parallel walls lined with stakes would wreck one as you pull it through.
Big down side of such a system is just how long it could take for a serpent to spawn in the water off and your kill box and when it does spawn you have to pray to Odin that the wind is in your favor.

OK I tested the kill gauntlet and it works great.
1) Build a set of stakewalls parallel to each other and 6 meters apart, starting at the water line and extending 24 meters or so at a beach with good open sea access.
2) Line each side with sharp stakes, place them tight against the wall and angled 45 degrees away from the beach.
3) You should have roughly a 2 meter wide open path from the beach to the far end of your gauntlet.
4) Once you harpoon your serpent simply beach your ship and comfortably drag the serpent to the far end of your gauntlet and let it kill itself on the stakes.
5) Repair and repeat.
i feel like having a couple of these in my trench. if i can make it deep enough. unfortunately dont think the water level will suffice for it to swim around
literally the first time i tried a boat and i met this dude, naked with a bow on a raft and i got him. its not even hard but its still scary

@@Kysen hahaha well, didnt have any other choice. The first boat we built my friend decided to go afk on, I tried to get it off the shore but the wind was too strong. So I decided to hit the boat with my fists, and it worked, it worked a bit too well.. I couldn't catch up with the boat. So my friend who was afk sailed away into the ocean without even knowing it. He came back screaming because he had ran into the Serpent, we didnt even know it existed. He died, we built a new raft and went back to gather my friends stuff, he was still there so we killed him.
(my friend didnt have anything when we went back out so i killed the serpent solo while my friend was trying to loot his body)
i just ran into my first sea serpent lst night also killed it with a bow before it even took half my karves hp out.
Just a quick bit of intel, it's not a kraken, it's a leviathan. There is no squid or giant squid in this game. All kraken are giant squid.
wish there was more use for the scales like serpent scale armor or at least a helm
The shield you get from these guys works wonderfully even up to the planes biome. It with full iron can fully block deathsquitose and most fulings.(berserker,shaman,spear throwers exempt) but you won't need another shield until black metal. Bonemass and motor were relatively easy with it.
I just got off the helm of the medium ship shot it with a fine bow till it died then i got huge pieces of meat i still cant cook lol.

Interesting, I didn’t even think about this method. I’ll usually set the sail at half mass and whip the bow out, loop back around and pick up the goodies floating in the water.

you know what is even better.. make a mote and drag him in there and let him go he will swim around and attack things seen it

Oh, use a harpoon...
In my first serpent encounter I was screaming at friend to shoot at it but he was afk the long journey. When he did became active...he pulled out the torch instead of the crude bow and fire arrows he was showing off earlier. We crash landed onto a new island and engaged the serpent by the shore. We dealt a lot of damage but then the serpent ran away. I signaled my friend to get on the boat to finish it off but he didn't want to. Lucky I gave up on the idea: I later discovered that my boat was just hanging on one bar of life left.
Half an hour later I discovered my first Leviathan. Sadly, I left my pickaxe on the new island.
I usually fire arrows at it till around 30% then drag it to shore! Muahaha
Not kraken, its actually a leviathan, great tips otherwise.
@bbmnb It is in fact a Kraken mate. The Kraken comes from Norse mythology. The Leviathan comes from Hebrew folklore.

@@mouse7429 The Kraken from the Norse mythos was an ancient giant squid that was said to have the ability to take down a Viking ship. In game you are seeing the very top of said squid as it rests on the surface. Spend too long on that "island" farming chitin and you will hear it growl...time to get back to your boat! Then watch the "island" shake and submerge as it disappears into the deep once more.

Kraken is not yet I'm the game but is the planned Boss for the Ocean Biome. What you've found is the giant tortoise's shell, which is more of an animated resource node at the moment, than an actual creature. Thank you for sharing
This is incorrect. The creatures that appear to be floating Islands are actually Leviathans, as found in the game files, and regarding the creature's spawn ID. The devs have openly stated that said Leviathans are based on Krakens from Norse Mythology and are "faithful to their original appearance as a large creature that was mistaken for an island. The island is only its shell while the rest of the kraken resides inside".
It is a Leviathan/Kraken .... They are in the game already.

Using a Stamina Potion would probably make it easier. The Serpent Stew is to die for though ;)

It Is Not Called A Kraken It Is A Leviathan.
Theyve definetely made this harder. I've got late game food and I cant get him anywhere near land without running out of stamina and when it breaks free near land he just despawns.
freaked out when i saw one. nothing but broze armor and some arrows. i jumped to the first land mass and shot him down with some arrows. the meat was the only thin that floated to the top. no lie before it attacked i said...man... would suck if this game had sea monsters
Then the Sea Serpent said "Oh, like ME?!" Lol! That sounds like irony to me. At least his surprise attack wasn't effective. Seems like bow and arrows are super effective on him though. ;)

Question: with the latest update in March, there's a line about how boss drops will now float, does this include the sea serpent drops so you don't have to bring it to land?
Good question! The serpent isn't a boss so I assume they will still sink but I'll have to test it :)
As of today's 0.105.3 patch the serpent meat floats but the scales and trophy do not.
I've spent hours at sea exploring two seed maps. Still haven't seen either of these :S I'm gonna make the bigger iron nails boat tomorrow and go sailing looking for a new base location. Hopefully I will finally find a Kraken before I find a serpent :)

Me and my friend were gonna collaborate where I was gonna hold the serpent down on land while my teammate would bash it with stagbreaker but he got caught up with some greydwarves and eventually the serpent just drowned while I held it there
This game is such a chore to play. Literally feels like work. And there is so many stupid things in this game that are inconvenient and annoying. One small example is that there is a ladder only on one side of the boat.
The Longship has ladders on both sides.

If you slow the boat down ahead of reaching the land/kraken, you won't take crash damage.
lol, ya this guy made every mistake in the book . . might not be the best person to guide. Definitely don't suggest you use his guide on flying helicopters!
@@galadhlinn Lol! Well, yeah, I see your point. Like someone else said though, if he shows you can screw up this badly, be this badly prepared and still do it, it gives confidence to newer players who might be intimidated.

Good vid mate, enjoy watching you valheim stuff. I've spent 4 hours on a medium boat, about 2 on the larger one and only ever seen the one. And that was right at the start of my game. 😢
Not sure I'll ever get to kill the serpent. Been killed by it a few times and the last time I headed to land. It followed me all the way and kept smashing my boat. Luckily there was a troll and it killed it. Unfortunately, the loot went under the water. 😟

I’m not sure if it’s just me, but my game likes to crash while I’m pulling leviathans. Unfortunately the game spawned me at camp, so I lost my boat, but it did give me most of the loot (although I’m not sure if it would exceed weight capacity for this). Only time it ever happens.
Kinda sucks because the first time I tried this, I had a soundtrack playing and it was the middle of the storm, so the encounter and fight were seriously awesome, but as soon as I jumped off my boat onto land valheim.origin or something popped up and then I was on my desktop.
At first I was scared of it. Now when I travel by Longship I actively search for it because I want its meat.
So you want to kill a horrifying abyssal beast as large as your ship?
No problem, I've got just the solution for you!
You see, you start by sailing out and looking for the Kraken. It's huge, like an island, can't miss it! You're gonna mine barnacles from it's back!
Going full sail in circles and shooting with your bow is way faster and easy.
If you drag the serpent near other enemies they'll usually attack him. It can take a bit of finagling to make them aggro the serpent, but I find it easier than trying to balance harpooning and killing him myself.
One thing I'm absolutely shocked about, shocked I tells you, has nothing to do with sea or serpent. Tree trunks. You just leave them? Oh for shame! ;)
I know I'm late to the party here, but this was one of the clumsiest tutorials on sea serpent hunting I've ever seen.
Kinda necro-ing this video a bit, but early game before you even have the harpoon, kite the serpents to a nearby black forest if you can. Trolls will absolutely destroy the serpents. I had enough scales to make the serpent shield before I even looked at swamps.

I'm trying to sail to my second boss on a raft. landed near the marker on plains goblin runs up and one shots me in full troll gear. save was an island midway and i manage to make another raft but im naked now with nothing but a club. get back near were i landed to get my gear back and one of these sea serpents destroys my raft and kills me within 10 seconds of shore. now i know how to kill that bastard, thank you.

I find the serpents are way too easy
A friend and I started playing valheim blind
So we didn't know about the boats and started traveling the ocean on a raft in leather armor
It was a tricky fight but we got it without too much hassle, and without the harpoon, basically just the standard bow
I think at this stage at the game with the loot we had at the time, the serpent should have obliterated us and our raft

This definitely looks like an interesting idea but maybe if someone made like let's say a little pond you're pretty much dragged into would it like convincing to be like hey I'm in water so I'm now not going to be trying to run to the ocean when in reality it is just in a little pond
or can just throw few arrows to get his health bellow 50-30% and then harpoon it to the shore if u r so worried ab it leaving. the other u can do is if the serpant spawns somewhat close to the shore u can just slowly go with ur boat on the shore and it will follow you close to it and kill it there or harpoon it.
I guess I was more wondering what to do when boating and a serpent surprises you. Is a bow your only option, is that even possible to win that or do you just sail away as fast as possible?
I was on my raft when I first saw it I was AFK watching a video while going at o mph to another island I thought it was the video I was watching but as soon as I went back to the game it broke my raft and I was left to be eaten by this abomination.

I killed mine without a harpoon. I simply went to land, got off my boat and shot it with my bow till it was dead. Got in my boat and picked up the floating meat.

I got scared of this sea monster and when i finally found one it chased me then i found out the easy way that a troll is stronger after i got whacked in the back after i ported
