I've had my Martin D28 since 1972. I was 12. I am 61 now. Next year will be my Martin's 50th birthday! I've taken it everywhere. It has a few scars. Nothing terrible but it makes it mine. Martins are lifetime guitars. They take a piece of your heart and keep it. And in return they give you years and years and decades of inspiration. Even with all the age and a few scars, or even because of it, it is the most beautiful guitar I've ever seen.
I bought a Martin HD28 in 2008 Sean. Now 13 years later I'm still mesmerized and totally taken by the sound. And the smell of the wood through the soundhole is intoxicating. I'm so happy for you! The excitement from you in the video just reverberated through my screen!
It still smells after 13 years? Crikey. I bought a D-35 in July and assumed the smell would go within the year. Rosewood is a funny smell - like ditch water?
The Martin Guitar factory and Museum is actually located in Nazareth, PA -- not Bethlehem. Interestingly, the lyric, "I pulled into Nazareth...", from the song 'The Weight' (by The Band), is a reference to that town. P.S.: that's not an "extra" bridge pin...it's the strap button for the bottom of the guitar. Congrats on the new 'D'!!
Nothing better than new guitar smell! D-35! Congrats Sean!!! That IS a dream guitar! Your instrumental piece is gorgeous - really spotlights the resonance and “heritage” of the Martin.
I got my Martin D-35 three days ago. Impossible to put down. I own an Alvarez Yarri, the older Japanese version. Which is a great guitar. But the Martin D-35 is like a grand piano. Every note sings. Congratulations.
When I opened up my new Martin D-28 earlier this year, same sensual over load: The smell, the elegant simplicity of it, the fact Paul McCartney used a D-28 to record Blackbird at Abbey Road, the fact my first name is Martin (wanting to get the Mrs. a Martin Owner t-shirt). And the first strum…huge loads of big aural goodness filled the room! Enjoy man, months later, I’m still giddy over mine!
I found it! HOW did I miss this video?? (I cringed seeing the guitar hit the case twice lol!) WOW SO FUN!! I’m laughing at myself for being so excited for you hahah!
Congratulations on your newest addition. Lately, I have been particularly enamored of the sound of a D-chord played as a first position C-chord slid up two frets. It was cool to see that you apparently like it as well. Enjoy your videos.
That is Awesome! It sounds as beautiful as I expected! You will simply love it. My first real guitar was a Martin D-35. I didn't even know much about them at the time, other than I loved their sound. That set me on an adventure. Over the years I've been fortunate enough to pick up 3 more Martins, a J-16CE maple, a 000-15M, and a 000-28 Reimigined, the 28 is the only one I bought new. I love all things martin.
Sean my only complaint is I don’t have many more like buttons to press. Amazing brother. Having one of those to hold in my hands will only be a dream. I am so happy for you and them I could listen to it all day.
Very nice. I bought a new D-18 a few months ago. Mahogany back and sides rather than the D-35's rosewood. I already had a rosewood dread so figured I should try something new. I'm very pleased with it.
I also like dreadnought martins specifically because you can beat the hell out of it when you play and that big body always has something more to give.
I felt the tension when you didnt spill what model is in the box… especially because its in the title 😂 congrats on being sponsored by Martin you deserve it!
Would love a video on the difference between the "Martin sound" and the "Taylor sound" highlighting the new d35 and the taylor 8 series? Also how bout more breezin up tees in your videos?
I decided to upgrade from my Martin MMV and ordered a HD35. While at my local Guitar Center I played a D28. No comparison with the sound. I plan on bringing the MMV with me so I can hear them side by side. Thank you for an inspiring video you two!
I bought my d-35 in 2005. I feel your excitement. It's a great guitar. It has given me many great memories. I also have a hd-28 but the d-35 gets more playing time. My d-35 is the oldest and has mellowed out and sounds great.
I bought in 1986 a new D35 and I have loved playing it for all these years. In addition to being a beautiful looking instrument it also sounds wonderful.
My first guitar i ever bought in 1986..a used Martin 1973 d35 for 550$..had a pick up put in about ten years ago..play it every day..sounds great..will turn 50 in two years..🎸
How cool to see katie do a unboxing, actually she could just read the phonebook and I'd be happy and congrats Sean on that beautiful sounding guitar. Looking forward to hearing you and katie break this baby in......most excited I've seen you over a new guitar......You 2 need to get a room....funny..Sean the ever good guy hands it over to Katie, Sean your a good man
I remember getting a d-35 back in 67 costed me 400 dollars, and I was only 16 years old working in a mall. I’ve taken it everywhere and I still use it to this day, it’s definitely seen better days but still manages to make a sound every now and then
I spent a long time of the opinion that the Martin dreadnought sound didn't really do anything for me, and I was willing to wait until the right one came around. A used HD-28 pretty much fell in my lap when I went to have my Larrivee D-03 worked on and I'm eating crow and enjoying the sound. I'm still in love with my Larrivee, it's a wonderful example of a mahogany dread, but Martin dreads in Rosewood really are something special.

Great video Sean. I'm thinking about to purchase a Martin D 35 to play fingerpicking. Is this guitar suitable to play fingerpicking? My local store only have the series D16, 18, 28, 35 and 41. I played the D16, D18, and D28, but I found their sound low. Sadly, these are the only available models in the store. What guitar would you chose betwenn the Martin D35 and D41 to play fingerpicking and strumming?
Can't go wrong either way! I personally think the D35 is where it's at. I think it's best value model. The 41 is amazing as well, but for me and my style (and I do play a lot of fingerstyle), I don't need anything more than a 35.
Dang, I really want to hate you right now, but hard to hate a man with a D-35. Congrats and good for you, you've put in a lot of hours grinding away busking and making videos. Enjoy that guitar, it's a beauty.
I opened a brand new HD28 I bought in 1978 where the case was vacuumed sealed to a cardboard sheet for transporting to retailer. I spent the first few minutes just smelling the guitar 😂. D35 sounds great. 👍

The D35 was always my dream as well. Got one about 4 years ago. They are gorgeous, I love the 3 piece back and bound fretboard. I also like the sound better than D28, has more balance and not as boomy. Like yours, no pickup, but I can use one of several wireless pickups so as not to drill a hole for a jack. Or use a mic. I did grow one guitar old along with me. I bought a new Gibson J50 in 1971 and still play it. She has 52 years now and just keeps sounding better. Unlike me....
I just knew she was going to bang that guitar into the case and at 3:50 she did; to a brand new guitar. Good thing she did not hit the case metal trim. I have a D-35 and my now 4-year-old has dented it at least 6 places so I feel the pain watching this.
This guitar sounds awesome. I went to the Martin factory in Bethlehem PA a couple years ago and got a Sound hole cutout. That's about the only Martin i can afford ;)
Love Martin! I have a GP model, but for a GP it was their top GPCRSGT which is all solid wood, including the back and sides instead of laminated. First time I cracked open that case and saw and smelled it in that emerald green, I got a lump in my throat.
Katie is just so dang cool, she gets excited as well. Sean is over the top with it and yet what does he do ? He hands it to katie to check out ,so cool
You are a lucky dog SD!! I'm glad it wasn't an HD28 Shade Top!! 53 years playing guitar and I still can't have one! Seems like every year I have to have 1 or 2 new cracks fixed in my '67 LoPrinzi D28!! Despite the best of care!! It's only got 4-5 bazillion songs on it! LOL My '73 Guild D25M, with a newer neck re-set picks up the slack, but just doesn't have the rosewood tone. Oh and BTW, don't go to Bethlehem. Not sure whats up there since the steel mills closed? Martin is in Nazareth PA. Seriously though, huge congrats on the beautiful D35!! It's one of the few that make my heart go 'thump thump'!!! 8) Peace... --gary
OMG! All of your new "stuff" is free because of your RUclips channel? Geez dude, this is killing me. I'll bet you've worked hard to build this channel though. Awesome 👏
Sean your eyes even lit brighter than for the ladies so that Martin is really your deal for life. Its really a nice, knew it would be D-35 classic Martin dread. Wait until it really breaks in the coming months and loses some that stiffness in the top and then it will sound sweeter. Good score. Love to do the Martin museum and factory tour, someday. Hope you will do some video of the tour. Also they have an performance room there so you might want to do one of your songs and shot it there. Fun times.....
I picked up an LX1L at a flea market for $50 with the soft case. Even this one, which is a half size, but it has a full solid Spruce top and Mahogany veneer sides and back. I watch you play with those fingers you were blessed with. I'm pretty sure that your little finger is longer than my index finger. It is laughable when people on the web and probably even you will talk about using the thumb to play the bass string. I can't even do that with this guitar I'm talking about. What I wanted to say is even this little guitar the sound is surprisingly crisp. Even then the lower strings don't get muddy. Plus it plays loudly enough for the bedroom or even the beach. I was going to ask what strings does Martin put on their top of the line models? Are they the same kind you lean to, or do you have a favorite type of string? Do you play a lighter string or a thicker string. Answer if you want , but you definitely answer them if I don't ask them. Beautiful guitar. You are lucky you are not left-handed. That Martin sounds amazing. I expected it to be good but every open chord sounded like a song beginning. Definitely heard “Engine Driver” by the Decemberists. I share your love for heritage. There are many great guitars out there but heritage is important to ME. If it’s not a Martin or Gibson I have little interest in them. I like the guitars my grandad and other ancestors played. Not only for the history but because I feel close to them again. Like reconnecting ( I miss them dearly). Sweet guitar brother ! Hope your still enjoying !
The D-35 was introduced in 1965. Maybe pick a hit song from that year and make a video. Awesome guitar. Glad you finally tossed the Taylors in the corner.
Just doing a little research on the D35 and ran across this vid. I have to say she definitely looks like a keeper. Oh, you might want to consider keeping the guitar as well!
Love Martin and the factory is in Nazareth not “Bethlehem”. The tour is amazing! Enjoy! Also, I’m so glad you commented on the smell! There is nothing like the smell of the inside of a Martin. I have an HD28 and if I need something to lift me up I play it, but I also take a few moments to stick my large Italian nose into that beautiful peace of heaven and take a whiff! That guitar is going to bring out some new sounds and ideas in you - enjoy!
I’ve wondered about a D35,never played one but I’ve had a D18 but didn’t like the feel of it, I currently have a D28 that feels great to play I also have a HD28 that sounds good but slightly harder to play for some reason but my go to guitar is my D15 , I’ve also wondered about a D42. I’ll keep dreaming

WOW, it is absolutely beautiful Sean. The sound is beautiful too.
I’d like to see a shoot out with your Taylor 617 and your new Martin. Also, does the nut width of 1 3/4” feel more comfortable or 1 11/16?

The D 15M is my next purchase. I just picked up a Resonator I am enjoying at present.
I'm thinking Katie looks really great today, and the guitar is nice too. Something is missing, and I think it is a nice leather jacket.
Hopefully coming soon!
@@seandaniel23 if you're gonna play the tough guy in a soap you'll need it!
My favorite Martin is the 0000-MC-28 1980's with oval sound hole, only 800 made, fabulous guitar!
Just doing a little research on the D35 and ran across this vid. I have to say she definitely looks like a keeper. Oh, you might want to consider keeping the guitar as well!
I just got mine 2 weeks ago. I had the same reaction.
It's Fragile',,, Congratulations!! A bucket list instrument
Dude this D35 looks and sounds amazing ! I just bought mine two weeks ago
Someone loves you.....Taylor & Martin giving you freebies thats impressive!
Thanks so much!
I LOVE the D-35. I don't own one...yet. But I would legitimately choose it over a D-45.
It's amazing!
Not if you played them side by side
Girls and guitars 24/7
Just might be the way to get to heaven
Trying my best Rich!
No, that IS heaven!
Congrats. Since they made signature D-35's for Johnny Cash and David Gilmour you might want to do Ring of Fire or Wish You Were Here.
Good idea ;)
Last week the Taylor and now this !!!!!!
Sweet
It's been a good month!
Honestly, I wasn't impressed with the tone of the Taylor you unboxed the other day. This, however, sounded amazing straight away. Just perfect.
Thanks so much Duane!
