Thanks to Jesse for making the intro and graphic for us to enjoy!!!
"...it definitely needs stripped down to nothing", as YOU said, Ray. Nothing, that's all that's left. Lauren, you gotta have a talk with that boy!
IF HE STRIPS DOWN TO NOTHING, HE WILL HAVE NOTHING. LOL
@@price103599 "IF HE STRIPS DOWN TO NOTHING, HE WILL "STILL" HAVE NOTHING." Basically its scrap right now but has potential.
Junk it.
He's reverse trolling
I wanna see an ice-cream truck😢
I feel like there's a good chance all the savable parts of that jeep will fit in a shoe box, but I'll certainly look forward to a future series on it
The broken stud removal on the Rubasu was child’s play compared to what you’re in for 😎
A great Father and Son project, and when it is completed, your son will be old enough to drive it !
With the help of my dad, I restored a 1952 Army Jeep. It took up two bays of his shop for a year. There is a seductive Siren’s voice that whispers in your ear that since you already have it this far apart, you might as well pull that component too, since you got it to this point. Not to mention the frame and body parts that looked ok until you took the sandblaster to them.
Just doing my resto on a 94 Cherokee and hear that same little voice,it just never ends😂
I agree with you Ray. I have restored many a vehicle from almost nothing. It takes time and money but a project worth while. There is nothing more satisfying than finishing a frame off. I look forward to watching your progress good luck wayne
the 1st thing the jeep needs is a one way trip to the crusher!
I concur!😊
Polishing a Turd
I agree! It doesn't have any good body panels to work with. A good chassis doesn't mean much when you can buy or fabricate one. If you want a basic racing style interior, then go for it, but it's nearly impossible to properly restore this interior. Crusher it is.
Why? I have seen worse starts for a nice resto. I guess he/you could buy a plastic fantastic new jeep that definatly wont be around nearly 30 YEARS later.
Throw it away!
Call Troy he'll take it off your hands Ray, because it's a Jeep thing😁
Ray could buy one of Troys jeeps for the 4.0l and use the 4.2 CJ7 crank to make a stroker 4.7L Mustang killer.
That’s awesome 😂
I miss Troy with his jeep jokes.
Parts list:
-everything
C&C Equipment sells every body part for stock jeeps. To the point you can kit a complete vehicle.
@@opendstudio7141 But there comes the old joke: “How do you get a million dollar car?” The answer: “You build it out of Spare Parts!”
@@opendstudio7141 My thought exactly. Clinton Chitwood's the man.
@@opendstudio7141 J.C. Whitney use to also. You could build almost a whole Jeep from their catalog.
He still has the lights 😂. Frame 😂. Well repaired frame probably unsafe too. 😂
Speaking from experience I can say that starting with a little better and more complete Jeep will save you tons of time but also money because you don't have to replace parts or buy missing parts. Looking forward to the resto!
No one tell him.
Wouldn't save time to just take the forklift and put the whole thing straight into the skip? 😉
You can do it. I was a founding member of the Atlanta four wheel drive club in 71. We rebuilt some badly damaged ones, but most of this one needs to be replaced. Collins Brothers jeep in Texas has every part available for cj's
The two white straps holding the tow strap…If you flip them over and pull on loose end, they come undone. Learned that when I had a paper route when I was a kid 😎
I was going to tell him that too! It's a lot faster and easier!
Yep. Learned that when I had a paper route, too.
i was going to say this as well
My favorite saying, experience is something you get right after you need it.
Yep, flip over and pull the end tab back across itself.
Ray, that thing looks like Bob Ballard found it when looking for the Titanic!
Your jeep needs a jeep, you can fix anything, all it takes is time and money.
Tons of time and money
This rust pile would consume way more money than buying a Jeep in WAY better condition requiring 2 box trucks less in parts.
JEEP, JEEP. IT ONLY IN 2ND GEAR.
Quadratec has all the parts including tubs and frame and replacement parts you will need for that jeep and the Cj7 Renegade are worth a lot of money restored.
You're a good mechanic. Fixing other peoples things and fixing your's after. Love your videos man!
It's going to take some time but if Lauren is willing to give her blessing, I say go for it. I would love to see what it becomes. good luck Ray!
Talking about putting one of those tow straps on the ball hitch. I was driving school bus one winter in Aberdeen , SD in the mid 1990s. I mis-judged a turn on a foggy morning and ended up sliding the back end into a snow drift and part way down the ditch.
The garage sent out a large 4x4 Jeep. Those guys did just that, hooked the strap to the ball. They pulled the bus out and also the ball sending it through the radiator on the bus. The boss had more than a few choice words about that one.
Ah good ole South Dakota winters.
I have absolute faith in your abilities to get this thing shiny again.
There comes a Time in Life when a Vehicle has Served Up it's Usefulness, this Jeep has done this, I See a Mega amount of Work to get this Old Timer back to it's Usefulness...
Agree. There MUST be 100's of other Jeeps that are worthy of restoration.
Go for it! Fix it! It would make a cool video series! I would watch it. I think it would be cool to see it come back to life. 😊
Hi Ray. That jeep looks more like a "retirement project" I can't believe that you are possibly serious about restoring this old beast. By the time you buy all the parts and the time you will need to work on it, you could have enough $$ in it y'all could have bought a new jeep. But I am guessing you are just playing with us. Cheers my friend and thanks for all you do!.......then again this project could be worth 10 years worth of content for your channel
To someone who just looks at the costs involved, as you are, it's certainly not worth it. To someone who wants it for the long term, (like his Silverado), it's the just cost of his new _hobby._ Some people spend thousands on golf. Others on PWCs. There are plenty of people who love building/restoring cars, and many who spend huge amounts on offroad toys that they take out, drive around, break, fix, then do it all again, because for them half the fun is restoring/fixing/customising the cars.
And then there is the satisfaction of bringing it back to life. Knowing that _I accomplished this._
On my old 327 Chevy CJ I put a fiberglass tub and a flip up front end . No more rust there and the entire front end ( including fenders grill and headlights ) just lifted up and rested on the windshield . The engine was wide open for working on and the front tires made for two nice fishing seats with the front end up .
Clint at C & C has complete replacement bodies when you are ready.
My 82 CJ-7 is my daily driver! Love it, over a million miles on everything but the engine. I built it and went a little crazy with it!
I got rid of the back seat, made for a lot of unable space to carry things
Troy should be proud
Reminds me about that one sentence Ray said to Troy once about Jeep things, guess Ray forgot it himself now 🤣
Troy infected Ray with the Jeep bug.
Nah, Troy is laughing his ass off!!!
When was just out of high-school had a CJ-7 late seventies. The frame was set up where it could hold a sb Ford engine with a change in mounts, 289 or 302 if I remember correctly . I had it fixed up pretty well and had a blast running around with it during warm weather. But being a young kid with a good income and still living with my folks my eye soon found something bigger and better. Now I wished I still had it. These new Jeeps just don't take what the old ones did. They're building them for family cars now. You can't just fix a fender or panel puncture with a piece of sheet tin and pop rivets. And use a couple of 4 inch steam pipe for a bumper.
A classic case for the radiator cap treatment.
Lift the radiator cap - and drive a new Jeep under it🤠
I get the joke, but new Jeeps are pretty bad.
The awesome thing about the old cjs is all you need is a solid frame. everything else is replacable. In fact, AMC literally used whatever they could get to build them. I had an 85 CJ7 that had a Chevy straight 6 motor, Ford three speed automatic transmission and transfer case, Dodge 4wd axles and Wagner lockout hubs from the factory.
Good thing you are single with unlimited resources. Strip every thing off the frame and start over. Easy peasy. Fun fun fun. And you'll have a true classic when you're done in 7 years.
He has a "Wife-Unit" and a few kids, so he's not single 😂
@@alexf.9224 I'm sorry, I'm not going to explain it to you if you didn't get it.
@@alexf.9224 If he's married now, the minute he puts a spanner to it, he might as well be single 🤣Coz wife unit ain't never going to be impressed no way 🤣
@@alexf.9224he was trying to be funny
@robertc5292 ah i see that i have missed the joke
I had (wife unit) a 1500kg camping trailer fall off the back of a hyundai tucson once, within sight of home. Our safety system is thattrailers over a certain weight need an E brake, and there is a cable linked from the E brake handle to the tow vehicle. Its a sacrificial system, the cable breaks but it is good to know it works!
That is a seriously ambitious project.
ambiguous might be abetter word....
I briefly lived in FL and am reminded of a co-worker who built a swamp buggy I once rode on. A 2WD bare bones rig with tractor tires on the front and huge airplane tires in the back w/chains for traction. Built on an upside down (Model A?) frame with a monster Cadillac engine, no body, no undercarriage, two seats welded in place, and no brakes. Rested his bare feet on the bellhousing while we were tearing about. Good times. Could be something similar is in the making here? I ain't sayin', I'm just sayin'. And here's another shoutout to Al Gor-Rhythm. :)
The JC Whitney catalog will be your friend here
They still around?
@@CheerfulTent-ww4hr they are indeed
@@treadhead1945 Kool
There are plenty of catalogs and companies where you can build a jeep from new parts. The only valuable part is the VIN tag - if you got just that and a title, you got a Jeep. Time & money will get you a show queen to a bush buggy. Build it to your purpose.
@shaneoneill1338 I called out Whitney because of the history. Back in the day it was the only game in town. As a kid I'd anxiously wait every quarter to dream about my ultimate Jeep
I had an 84 Renegade, Chestnut Metallic Brown. $10,200 new. I’m gonna love watching you build that!!👍
I believe YOU can fixer up for sure, but yea it's gonna take ALOT of time and money with this beast but it is something you are good at so im sure this will be a nice little project for you to do when you just wanna do something for yourself.
You said the word many times , you know what to do 😢 RIP
Life lesson number one.The wife unit is always right 😅😅😅
I don’t think even Eric at I Do Cars would touch that thing for parts! Good luck.
The Jeep is what is known as a brave restoration
I think the first thing we need to know is, what is the goal? Some sort of hot rod? Field car? Daily driver? Show car? Then we can really start to think about the way forward, if indeed there is a way forward.
A video series of you rebuilding it would be good. It needs a lot of work but the frame seems solid underneath so i think it is saveable.
Rainman Ray.. The only thing missing is a Jeep. 😂That thing is going to take a lot of money.
With the forklift grab that jeep and place it inside the scrap trailer, connect your truck and the Jeeps first trip (and last) could be to the scrap yard.
I’ve been catching glimpses of that thing forever!
Morning Ray. Project Jeep CJ-7. Let the fun begin.
Has double Nickle Air Conditioner. Awesome!
You have a serious project ahead of you Ray. Good thing there are plenty of aftermarket companies making parts for that buggy.
Hello! NUMBER UNKNOWN. Good Monday morning Ray and the wife unit. And a tip of the hat to the new employees. Not a fan of Jeeps, so I think you might know what my vote would be. I’ll just leave it at that. Roger in Pierre South Dakota
I'm 73 and love your channel, but not sure I'll be around to see the finished Jeep restore.
Thank you for saying not to use the ball as connection point. I taught off-road vehicle recovery for OHVA and this was a common mistake.
I watched a C10 try to snatch a mud stuck Blazer once. The C10's body bolts were rusted through. When he got 6 feet of slack and punched the 350 in the C10, when the slack got sucked up, the C10's cab moved forward 8 inches off the frame. Blazer did not move more than 1 inch.
Brave man, Ray. Where there is a will, there is a way.
That jeep needs to be scraped
You need to remove the radiator cap and drive a new jeep under it! 😊
Hi Ray the only thing worth keeping is the badge. Even Troy would not tackle this project!
It'd be really cool to see you restore the jeep. That being said, it's gonna be a lot of work, so it's up to you on whether or not you decide to do it. It definitely would make a cool video series watching you tear it apart and put it back together with new parts. But again, it's up to you on whether or not you want to dedicate the time and money to do it.
At 73 that is a project I'd pass on BUT you're young and employed so go for it!
Really enjoy your content is very rare to find an honest mechanic longer videos of better in my opinion great content
I'd call Dennis Collins in Texas! He's got plenty of drivable Jeeps.
As a classic car enthusiast, even the thought of one of these old things being put back together brings joy to my soul.
YUP. Perfect description of youthful exuberance 🎉😊
I can’t wait to see this project get started 😁👍👍
BUILD IT! and don't forget the dual transfer case!! and ya GOTTA SAVE that Sony cassette deck!!!
Wow my Tahoe has tow hooks on the front! A CJ-7 fiberglass glass body is about $3K Well at least it's a better start than Troy's 2WD ! The key inside the glove box I believe Is a differential lock. Had a 75 Jeep Cherokee (2 door Wagoneer) that locked
Yes definitely keep it and do a frame off restoration
I would absolutely tune in for a Project Jeep revival multi part series showing the rebuild from start to finish. But I also understand u may not have time or funds for the project. Keep us posted
The fiberglass top is very valuable and a lot of people would buy it! I have had so many offers for mine! I bet you can sell that top and made a profit! Next take the rest and put it in the scrap bin!
I'm definitely diggin on the Jeep build, can't wait to see how this progresses.
When I was stationed in the Carribbean, one of the guys there had an old CJ-6 in really bad shape. A bunch of us decided we'd push it off a cliff into the ocean, but it really just rolled down the cliffside and landed nose-first on the small beach below.
Ray this will be a part cannon build for sure and body work. There will be alot of videos out of this build and the wife unit understands so you are good Have a great day Ray
Ray you know a straight six never die's
You've got the tools, the skills and you don't have to listen to a boss who will use that place to something else.
It'll be good and the wife unit will love it. Have fun and make it a hell of a jeep.
I'll look forward to follow you on the way.
A good LONG TERM project, tons of work ,money, and frustration. Sure give it a shot why not.😊
Being the owner of an '82 CJ8, I feel your pain. 🤣Looking forward to more on this.
@Rainman Ray's repairs ooooooo looking forward to you restoring this jeep I have a thing for these I do like them 👍
Yes! Save the ol girl! Restomod!
It’s a cool project. I wish I had a good one like this.
This is going to be a great series
Good thing you parked it close to the scrap metal recycling bin!
Good luck with it... It's just time and money... As long as you want to its doable
May the Force be with you. You'll need it.
The chrome boat bar on the passenger side. It is commonly referred to as the “OH SHIT!!”
For when things go sideways off roading. Between 2 brothers they had 5 of the CJ’s from 74 through 85.
Morning, Ray it’s a Jeep thing. Just do it, I would if I had the chance to do it. It would be such fun to drive around jacked up, big tires and cool retro paint
6:39
This is how raymond moved into the shop permently just add sleeping cot.
Ray, I love ya and want only the best for you. That said, the jeep is a money pit you don't want or need! Kids are growing, one of them will need a ride they want to be proud of one day soon and that would not be a rebuilt jeep! Put the money into a classic muscle car to pass along to the offspring. Something they will take care of and cherish because you built it.
I am a jeep guy. You will end up replacing alot. But that said, it's worth it if you want it to be. I spent 3 years and alot of money on mine and I couldn't be happier.
That's not even a JEEP thing : It's a HEAP thing. 🤯
happy wife unit, happy family unit
As much as I love Jeeps, especially CJ7s, I wouldn't bother with that one unless you absolutely WANT a full frame off, replace everything project. And if you do that, is it really the same Jeep?. For what that Jeep is going to need, you might as well get a Quadratec catalog, and start ordering everything. By the time you get everything off that frame, you might as well order a replacement frame, and parts and build one from scratch. If I HAD the time, tools, talent, and money to do this, I still wouldn't. I'd look for a Jeep that has more to work with.
All that being said, if you do this project, I'll be here cheering you on!
That’s going to be quite an undertaking.
Build it!! So fun!
A few minutes with your Sawzall and it will fit in the scrap trailer nicely !😊
Money Pit!🌩🌀
I know you like a challenge Ray, but I would find a cliff and push it off.
Clint at C&C equipment in nashville Indiana is a heavy equipment dealer.I follow him on youtube. He also sells jeep parts, tubs, fenders and other parts. He has a warehouse full of them. He deals in military surplus too. Unless you have parts source closer to home.
The Tahoe sounds great
I think it's a sound project.
It just needs..:
*Yes.*
The Wife Unit is always right!
It’s said, that time and money can fix anything, but in this case, it might be a bridge too far.
Thanks!
