    That was definitely one of the BEST concerts I've ever been to. I have never seen a band that precise in their musicianship. OUTSTANDING!

    Tony Suggs. Very much Basie influenced. His light style and demeanor very much is a reflection of the Late, Great Count.

    No me voy a cansar de admirar, el swing de la Big Band de Count Basie, que al ejecutar Corner Pocket, y con el fabuloso ritmo de Butch y los solos de Winston y Lawrence, es algo FABULOSO!!!!!!

    For those concerned about the tempo put a metronome on Butch Miles. BTW it doesn't vary!

    There is another version of "Corner Pocket" which you can find by putting just "count basie" in the search box and it should come up as the first video ... it has trumpet solos by That Jones (Basie 53-63) and Al Aarons (Basie 61-69), tenor sax solo by Frank Wess (Basie 53-64) and drummer Sonny Payne (Basie 55-65). The video was made sometime in 1962 and the band at that time was playing a swing style. This video made in Switzerland in 2004 is a bit more "boppy" ... proof ... the tenor solo.

    @aVWgirl250 it was a while back, i can't quite remember, i know we did lil darlin. i wish we had learned sing sing sing before he came. i think I've watched the video of him playing sing sing sing a thousand times, and love listening and watching butch, not only a great musician, but showman as well, always has that querky smile lol

    Oh I concur. Whenever you get new personnell into any group, the style and tone of the music changes. I bet that the Basie Orchestra of the early 1960s with Sonny Payne, et al would sound much different than the Basie group of the '70s and so forth. (this from a bassist of over 26 years' experience)

    I believe this is also Wynton's main horn.

    I agree, the trumpet does have an affect on the tone. However, Mr. Barnhart has always had (even before his Monette days) an extremely velvety, luscious, dark tone. If you go to the Mr. Monette's facebook or the Monette website you can watch other people try out the Ajna II trumpet (the model Mr. Barnhart is using in the video above) and they sound nothing like Scotty, tone-wise.

  • @scottybarnhart

    Interesting comment. I've been in the orchestra 17 years now and if you know the entire history of the band, really know the history, and have seen us live more than three or four times, then you would have an entirely different outlook on how things really are today. When was the last time you heard us live?

    @djjas:I would disagree. The band seems to be pushing all the way, and the Basie band always sat so far on the back of the beat, I think Butch was trying to keep a rein on it, although though I think he was even pushing the tempo during his fills at the end. Well, at least they get a Freddie Green replacement. Like that's even possible.

    Butch Miles is a fantastic drummer - but this doesn't swing as hard as the original Basie band did.

  • @djjas79

    The Drummer's time keeping is way out on this one. It is practically crawling along by the end of the tune. Needs to swing more to make it sound good.

    • @TheSchlerm
      @TheSchlerm 7 лет назад

      Disagree... The band is trying to rush the tune... Drummer is doing an excellent job of keeping it in the pocket.
