excellent adventures starring jwong confirmed.
Who wouldn't like that! He did do it a few times back in the day and did a good job on it. I remember he darn near beat someone with his Gouken on the one-button challenge.
SantosPhillipCarlo I love that you remember that lol
And now its actually happened.
Evo 2014 UVMC3 Champion and all-around fighting game legend EG.Justin Wong joins gootecks for a series of training videos to designed to help you step up your game. The first in our series is about combo efficiency. Which combo is best to do in different situations? Learn from one of the best in our new video: EG.Justin Wong Training Series #01: "COMBO EFFICIENCY" (@jwonggg)
Man Justin knows this game better than anyone. I'd love to see more of these kinds of vids with him.
Smart as always. Big thanks to all of you!
He's opened my mind. I've been playing SF wrong this whole time. I was always doing lw.f into Fb. It will get you wins against players who don't understand the game to well but doing this against people who've been playing for years will get you rekt fast. Thank you Goodtecks and Justice Wrong. :3
shuda said you're been playin wong :D.
***** i don't know man, wrong and wong are kinda the opposite :p
It was really just a quick intro to combo efficiency. Don't get stuck on jab jab shoryu now...
There's more to picking what combo you want to do. For instance, if you want to push your opponent to the corner, use tatsu.
He also only talked about the cross up, but Ken has tons of mixups. Use fake kick throw or cancel your fireball into overhead.
But really, the best way to learn how to choose : watch other players. If you're a Ken main, watch Momochi, playerjun, Michael Tan, etc. Go watch their matches and try to understand why they pick a certain combo every time.
I'm actually in a character crisis right now. So I'm still trying to find out which character suits my play style the best.
Angel Mandujano What are you looking for in a character ? Maybe we can help.
The way I found my main was kind of a "fuck them" pick. I got beat by rushdown characters with full screen moves, throwing reversals mid link and waking up with Ultra or an invincible move like assholes. I got beat by moronic players relying on cheap moves all the time. I wanted a character that had none of that. I didn't want to be like all these tools. I wanted a character that I had to play smart, that I couldn't win "cheaply" or "randomly" with. Found it.
Thanks gootecks for this informative video, good for beginners getting into the game .
that thumbnail picture of J Wong LOL. Like 20 years ago
This was really helpful. I play Ken, so for JWong to point this out is extraordinarily helpful. I am guilty of doing jab jab low forward fireball. I understand now that getting a knockdown is important. This kinda goes hand in with what KBrad was saying about practicing ways to guarantee more damage via setups.
im always preaching spacing and screen control to my fellow fighting game enthusiasts. now i have a go to link from one of the greats showcasing what ive been saying all these years.
JWong is like the grand sage of SF.
yesss
Dat Stereo Audio
i never really liked JW but after this i gotta give him some respect.
Nice video :) Thanks
He's such a beast
Gootecks, you and Mike should revisit the theory of these when approaching MKX
You got The Wong, you know you've officially made it now.
Justin was on excellent adventures years ago.
Mono the mics please, otherwise great vid from the best in the biz!
Great advice in Street Fighter theory. That's some useful stuff if you start thinking about how the game is played and why things are useful vs why not.I always have an internal struggle with a Gouken combo where you hit him with an ex. palm into hp palm vs ex palm into dash hk tatsu. The tatsu does more damage but depending on where you're at on the screen you'll end up right on top of the character vs finshing with the hp palm you fling the character across screen but can continue momentum. Sometimes the easiest isn't always the most effecient
Keep in mind that Gouken (and other zoning characters) play a lot different though. Especially in certain matchups, you want to stay away and zone them out as Gouken.
Let's just say you play against a Zangief. Why would you ever try to be close to him, when your zoning is a great tool to win against him. If you ever get Zangief into the corner and land an ex palm, just do whatever you can to do as much damage as you can, maybe get a reset if he tends to block a lot (or if you made him respect you), and end in sweep or another palm. After that, just backdash the hell out of the corner and start zoning again.
Even though this is a very specific scenario, that will most likely never happen, SF requires you to think about your opponents options and about what your best tool in a certain matchup is.
P.S: If you want to stay close as Gouken, you can dash twice and sweep after ex palm ;)
***** I guess it can be matchup based. Gouken can be used as a zoner or rush down. As far as being close to Gief I normally wouldn't recommend it but there are things you can do to bait SPDs and green palms while up close. You can condition them to block if your rush down is good enough. Also i've noticed reseting grapplers isn't wise because they tend to love to spam spd hoping that you mess up on a link or a reset. The great thing about fighting games is there doesn't need to script you need to read off of. Do this for x character, y for this character. If that was the case the game would becoming boring. My 2 cents
Mauldie Very well said :)
Im new to this. I dont get how to properly do a crouche jab-jab-medium kick fireball into one combo. Its like if the second jab or the medium kick doesnt want to go into one combo what am i doing wrong ?
"and here. we. go."
As a tekken player, I know all this. We do this all the time. But in street fighter, you dont have the time luxury as you do in tekken. This is way harder to put into practice in street fighter. And I find myself not doing it when I play street fighter as well. Great video.
I'm using the Hori Fighting Commander 4 fight pad, and the low forward to the HP hadoken doesn't always hit confirm.... any advice
where do we go if we don't want a private lesson with jwonggg?
Damn it I love ken!
gootecks can i book a training session with Mike Ross? I need to work on my up-forward into turbo button combos...
And what if I play Ryu and do jab, jab, fwd xx EX Hadouken?
what about it
It knocks down and gives more damage than the regular Hadouken.
Congrats you still spent meter
As a shoto your meter shouldnt be used to throw out stuff in a combo like EX fireball but instead you should focus your meter on FADC, pressure, or random EX move in case you're in a bad spot.
EX Hadoken is never an option
darkmario66 I wouldn't say ex Hadoken is never an option. Especially with Ryu, it's a great pressure tool once somebody is close to the corner and even in a combo near the corner it is great since it can lead into ultra1. You should end your combos in something like Heavy Tatsu, DP or sweep though, just to get the knockdown and the mixup situation.
this video is about setting up okizeme not efficient combos tho. efficient combos would be like not doing overly scaled combos that cost a lot of meter
I'd say this is more like.. "Combo Selection" rather than combo efficiency. But.. getting into choosing one combo over another based on damage/meter/situation might be a bit more advanced for what this series is trying to do. As far as I can tell at least. This almost seems like a clip from a much longer video really.
How about some Sim tutorials?
👍🏻

Jwong a fucking master
This shit feels more like a job/chore than a fun game! These nerds like J Wong know every little intricate detail, do they have a life outside of Street Fighter IV?
He gets paid to play and live stream video games and do well at tournaments. So yes its his job but he himself does it for fun as well.
Its like chess its fun to play it and pretend to know what you are doing, but when you are actually understanding its way more interesting and exciting.
People like J Wong like competing 1 on 1 with other people. He wants to win so he thinks of ways that allow him to do so. Then his opponent does the same thing and they keep thinking of what can work against what. Certain things tranfer between games so he can apply that as well and I think he's been playing fighting games for a longass time now so it's not like he spends 24/7 trying to find new things.
It's just that he finds it fun and had a lot of time to spend on his hobby. If you ask someone about a hobby/job they've had for 10 years and enjoyed it for that time chances are they know a lot about the subject.
That's why they are professionals. They get paid to know, and exploit, all the intricate details.
You sound like a moron.
Why does anybody spend all the meter for ex shoryuken and fadc air Tatsu and u1 .. With the ex you put the oponent more time in the air. I never ser this combos in a tournament.. ;(
I wish ken had knockdown on ex tatsu like everyone else
Well, I guess that's one way to get plinking down...cuz he's fucking plinking everything, haha.
gootecks, what's your height?
probably 6 foot. but mike ross is 5 foot with an extra 3 feet of ego.
Basic knowledge really.
dat one dislike
wait wut. who cares about this. the only combo you need is standing on legs > shoryuken ???
