    Now with the launch of the Super Meteor 650 it's time to ask should you upgrade your Meteor 350 to the new bike? This video isn't really a press release on the new bike (there's plenty of those already), but specifically a comparison video between the existing Meteor and the new Super Meteor 650. Please let me know what you think about the new bike in the comments...

    I was out on my 350 yesterday and it was great for what I want. Do I lust after a super meteor... Sure I do. But I'm so happy with the 350. The Rebel and the Vulcan are ugly as hell compared to the Super Meteor. They're efficient rides, but don't have the romance of the Enfield. With Enfields however improbable they look, they are a real surprise to ride.

    I’m sure RE did not want them to compete with each other, two really different bikes, IMO. I see the Super Meteor as more of a long distance/highway bike. Whereas the Meteor 350 is ideal for commuting, back roads, and speed limits 65 and below.

      Hi HWY, agreed they look similar but they are different offerings. The Super Meteor probably is Royal Enfield's first long distance tourer. @andrewoh1663 Год назад +11

    I've been anticipating the Super Meteor for ages now and was thinking of upgrading from my Meteor when the time came. But based on what I've seen so far, it's unlikely to happen. My reasons are as follows:
    1. The additional weight is unacceptable. It will have a higher torque engine which will mean lower peak power at the top end. The result will be much degraded performance over the Interceptor.
    2. The Meteor has only a slightly feet-forward and really works but the Super Meteor is a full American-style cruiser. Be warned, this riding position isn't really that comfortable on long runs, at speed. Most people 'touring' on these bikes are only touring to the next coffee shop.
    3. The one monumental failure of the 350 Meteor is the screen. I've taken mine off because of the noise and buffeting it creates at ear level. The one on the Super Meteor looks the same. If RE were really serious about *actually* touring on this, they'd offer a properly designed top-half fairing like others do.
    4. Although the tank is slightly bigger, the range will be much less because of the higher fuel consumption. I can guarantee getting over 400kms on a tank with the Meteor, but the Super Meteor will be down around 250-300kms.
    5. The Meteor is underpowered for long term motorway cruising, but who wants to do that on a motorbike? Take the back roads and enjoy the ride! Speed limits are being reduced across the UK - the Meteor therefore fits the bill.

    • @MindfulMotorcyclist
      @MindfulMotorcyclist  Год назад +1

      Hi Andrew, thanks for your comment here some excellent points.
      1) The weight is a huge increase but if you were to fit 2-1 exhausts (as available on the Interceptor) you'd drop 15kg off and be down to 226kg. I'm sure someone will already be mocking up a 2-1 for this bike. In stock form yes I think it will be more sluggish than the Interceptor but it will be able to achieve and maintain higher speeds than the Meteor which I suppose is the point.
      2) That's a good point, totally feet forward creates a nasty arch in your lower back which isn't fun. I think the reason proper upright adventure bikes are now used a lot for touring is the neutral riding ergonomics. Perhaps its a Sunday cruiser that 'can' be used for touring and that's a better description. There was a rumour that the 'Shotgun 650' was a cruiser with mid postiioned foot controls but perhaps that morphed into the SuperMeteor perhaps it is also to be released at some stage.
      3) The screen is awful for me at 5'11'' I had to discard it after trying different aftermarket screens. However this isn't universal, people of different heights had no complaints. They have just taken the screen off the Meteor and bolted it to the SuperMeteor, if not in exact proportions then at least in design. The slit mid screen did nothing on the 350 to alleviate buffeting and I doubt it will here. I would order one without a screen 100% and listen to others experience before adding one.
      4) Yes the Meteor 350 is around 200miles before the fuel light comes on. It's a long way. The SuperMeteor will still have good range, you'll probably appreciate the stop to refill if your back is stiff 😊
      5) Agreed, pretty much any bike is dull on the Motorway, (Hyabusa an exception 😂)
      Thanks for the comments, I'm sure some considering this bike will find it useful!

      @Mindful Motorcyclist apparently that weight they quoted is for the base model: So add the backrest, screen and other bits for the top model and it will actually be heavier!

      @@andrewoh1663 I have seen the specs it has a new fuel mapping makes similar power and torque but at a slightly higher rpm than the int650, they did it to have a much flatter torque curve so it probably might feel the same or even better at the top end. It is heavy but the weight given in the specs is with 90% fuel and oil, the weight for interceptor in specs is shown without fuel, so the difference is probably only around 20-25 kg heavier than the other 650s.

    To start, either join an RE Meteor withdrawal self help group or run right out and get on a list for a Super Meteor! Like others I don’t see the 650 as an upgrade. The 350 Meteor offers a unique experience that, obviously, many people love yourself included. The 650 Meteor is more for someone who likes the current batch of 650s but wants a different riding stance. Now I could draw a parallel between ER and HD. The Meteor/Classic match the traditional Sportster model, not the new water cooled version. The 650s are like HDs big twin line. Now HD has been successful in getting Sportster owners onto big twins. However, there are also people who love their Sportsters and never jump to a big twin. They just like the smaller lighter bike and see no need to jump to a larger machine. I will also add I have traversed the US, traveling around 3,500 round trip, on bikes with no windshield, fairing, or hard bags. I currently travel several hundred miles a day on a bike with no fairing/windshield or hard bags, or even soft attachable bags. I throw on a water proof duffle and off I go. My last thought is please get yourself another RE Meteor, large or small, before we’re forced to do an intervention!😂

    • @MindfulMotorcyclist
      @MindfulMotorcyclist  Год назад +3

      Hi JW, I know it's a sickness. My personal affliction of Royal Enfield pervades this RUclips channel 😂, guilty as charged. Since you mentioned Harley, why do you think HD cannot make a simple cheap bike in the same vein as the SuperMeteor? The Nightster is terribly plasticky and here in UK its £13,000 (a princely sum!). The FatBob is nice but it's very expensive. Harley has the character, it just can't seem to deliver the quality at an entry price point. How fast are you travelling with no wind protection 50-60mph? I know people seem spoiled these days talking about wind protection when older bikes were always naked. I personally would much much rather a naked no screen rather than an awful windscreen that deflects turbulent air right into you visor... As far as ordering another Meteor, I will be at Motorcycle Live 2022 in Birmingham which is near to where I live. I'll have a look at the Super there and see what it's like in the metal!

      @@MindfulMotorcyclist Your enthusiasm for RE and the meteor is great. Seems the brand has that effect on people which is very good for ER! OK, HD and simple cheap bikes…..full disclosure I obtained my Masters Degree for University of Wisconsin Milwaukee (That’s a hint). I am not now nor ever have been an employee of HD. That being said is the reason is simple but many faceted. I can only speak for the US market directly but here goes. We’ll start in the 60’s. HD had the Sportster, priced competitively with British imports as it was designed to compete with them. It even started out with a right side shift! However these bikes were not cheap so they imported Italian bikes made by Arrimichi the largest was a 350 4 stroke. They one road races with these bikes and on the track they were highly success lol, so much so that HD bought the company. By the 70’s the 4 strokes were gone and only 2 strokes remained. There are many books on the subject but directly dealers didn’t like selling them - little profit as they had to compete against Japanese bikes and we know how that went for everyone. BTW they were actually very good bikes and the 4 strokes, singles, are no collectors items. Skip forward to the 80’s and the buyout of AMF. One of the things AMF was accused of by the HD “faithful” was polluting the brand with the small bikes. An important point. Then HD revamped the Sportster line and the new Evolution 883 had a loss leader version that was simple and cheap and sold like crazy! Single seat, single instrument (speedometer), well you get the picture. Then they came up with a great deal, buy one and within 2 years trade it for a big twin and get back what you paid….what a deal! Skipping the Buell single which was bare bones too, let’s go to the failed 500/750 of just a few years ago. I never saw the 500 but I did see a 750. Pretty bare bones, not particularly attractive but it wasn’t as bad as the press liked to make it out to be. These sold very well in Australia and a few other places but never gained traction here. They take up floor space…that could be occupied by $25,000 USD bikes with massive profit margins bought by people who by lots of other things. The new regime at HD considered the 5-/750s to be diluting the brand and so ended production. So much of this boils down to not diluting the brands image, dealers don’t want small inexpensive bikes and those that do sell other brands, and the “faithfuls” have no use for anything other then twins.
      I agree totally on the Nightster. I saw it and thought “plastic fantastic” but I’m not a marketer so who knows. The older Sportster’s sales were diminishing but I think this was more to do with the change in demographics of motorcycle buyers as a whole and that profit margin thing again. Oddly my local dealer loves the traditional Sportster as they sell lots of them: I watched them sell 2 in a 3 hour period when I was having service done this summer. Sportsters owners also buy lots of stuff. So to make a long story long HD simply doesn’t want to when they can make $36,000 USD CVO bikes and sell out in days, hours, why produce something simple?

    If your going to disparage the BSA water cooling radiator then by the same token the Kawasaki W800 could say the same about the ugly RE oil cooler. I think the RE biggest plus is the ability to easily do your own valve servicing (unless you have to use a dealer to service to keep your warranty).

    • @MindfulMotorcyclist
      @MindfulMotorcyclist  Год назад +1

      Hi Terence, I think the BSAs is the least pretty and the W800 being aircooled is very attractive indeed. They've had to go up to almost 800cc though to get 47bhp without liquid cooling. The W800 is also £8499 which I think puts it nearer to Triumphs T100 than the Interceptor. The oil cooler is small and fits inbetween the down tubes which I think looks discreet enough. I agree though servicing with RE is easier and especially for the singles which was what I had (Meteor 350). Cheers.

    The Super Meteor is a great offering but I highly doubt it can be compared with the Meteor. Here in India, the Meteor is treated as a heavy bike yet in my opinion it's pretty flick-able. The super meteor offers a lot more but weighs a lot more too. I also have a feeling it might not sound as good as the Meteor 350? I could be wrong.

      Hi Ankit, thanks for the comment. I think the Interceptor engine sounds wonderful so no reason to assume it wouldn't work in the SuperMeteor too. I hope the Super doesn't feel too heavy when I eventually get to throw a leg over!

    • @MindfulMotorcyclist
      @MindfulMotorcyclist  Год назад +1

      Hi Jim, well they did have the Classic 500 but that was discontinued leaving RE really with 2 main powerplants (the 350 single and the 650 twin) for the Interceptor, Continental GT, Meteor(s), Classic 350 and Hunter 350. The do have the 411 in the Himalayan but that's unique to that bike. Perhaps a higher displacement version of the 350 lump with it's balancer shaft and newer tech would be a good idea! Thanks for the comment.

    • @andrewoh1663
      @andrewoh1663 Год назад +2

      I'd like that too, but the problem is Euro emissions standards. If RE made a 500 single, they'd have to water cool it to keep the emissions compliant. This is why they have a 350 single and a 650 twin. 350 cc per cylinder is a sweet spot as regards emissions. It's going to get worse - the wombles running the EU will drive all bikes to be water cooling in the next few years. 😞

      @@andrewoh1663 Hi Andrew, you obviously know more than me, could you elaborate a bit more. I have heard about the cylinder size of 350cc displacement being one of the optimal sizes, hence when F! went to 3500cc they used V10s, but why can they get away with it on the himalayan which by all accounts is not as well engineered as the J platform. Would love to learn why. Jim

    • @andrewoh1663
      @andrewoh1663 Год назад +3

      My limited understanding is that NOx emissions are driven in part by high combustion temperatures. Atmospheric N reacts with Atmospheric O above 1500C to make NOx derivatives. As cylinder size increases so does the ratio of head volume to head surface area and air-cooled heads tend to run hotter so have more trouble controlling NOx emissions.
      Also, Daihatsu did a lot of work in the 1990's to establish optimum cylinder size for efficiency and they said that 300-400cc was a sweet spot.

    • @jimstewart2141

    There were a number things that put me off, even though I know the quality of the 650 is amazing, but I still preferred the looks of the 350. Another major consideration was the weight (I personally think 241kg is too heavy for a 650). I would also have to part ex my Classic 500 and I wasn't prepared to do that.

      Very interesting that you took a 350 over the 650 as a few 350 owners are 'trading up' so to speak. The 350 has a more classic look and they have deliberately modernised the 650, look at the USD forks and the engine case logos for example. You've saved yourself a chunk of change and if you aren't interested in speed then the 350 makes a lot of sense. I loved my 350!!!
