Bob Backlund was robbed! We will never know if Bob could have slammed him or not, because when Bob stepped up for his try, as he went for the lift, Yokozuna took a step back. Bob was never given a clean opportunity.
Lex should've won the belt at SS 93 and dropped it back at Series or Rumble and you still could've done Mania the way it went to make Bret. I would've had Lex attack Bret after winning since the Lex express thing was over and let him work heel (which he was always better at) with bret for the following months!
As a kid, watching him celebrate a count out win like he just won the title buried him for me. He came off like an idiot. That finish was terrible. Especially with the no rematch clause.
Guy from the n east here: Yeah, Bret and Owen was like the main course being served first. Shawn and Razor was the expensive, exotic dessert. No other match was memorable lol.
Yeah Bret and Owen set such a high bar right off the bat that the only match that was able to follow it was the ladder match which had a lot more of the novelty aspect helping it. Nothing else was going to even be noteworthy after that. The only other spot in the entire show that mattered was Bret's celebration where Owen came out with the "What about me?" Moment
I always wondered in Lex could have gotten over as the top babyface if Hart weren't around. Bret was just so over and so awesome in the ring that there was no way the crowd would have accepted someone else over him.
This is my first memory of wrestling. My 6 year old brain thought it was a huge fucking deal. Like storming the beach at Normandy big deal. I thought Lex flew in on a helicopter to save America and body slam Yokozuna. I loved it
I wasn't happy. They promoted the guy all summer and I expected to see him win. The finish was an absolute rip-off. Terrible booking. If you don't want to serve a certain meal, don't advertise it. There's a reason they almost went out of business in the mid-90's.
Yokozuna volunteered his body to be body slammed and Lex takes some cheap shots at him. How is that not heel behavior? Also, I think it's weird when they try to turn a heel babyface and they're like "Man, this guy isn't getting over with the audience." Maybe they haven't forgotten that he was a narcissistic heel?
Imagine if Scott Steiner was given Lex's spot at that time. Only thing keeping early 90's Scott back was his mullet lol. But then again, back then, 90% of the wrestlers had a mullet.
Lex never should have taken a step above the mid-card, look alone should never carry anyone above that. That said, The Narcissist was the perfect gimmick for him, he had heel charisma.
Lex would've been serviceable if they had booked him properly. The WWF systematically buried all their own "main eventers" in that time period through idiotic booking. Bret, Yoko, and Luger all were getting beat clean and looking like cowards and morons in cheesy and stupid matches.
The way lex was being promoted they shouldve just let him win at summerslam 93.....survivor series stay the same at rumble 94 luger beats Yoko 1 last time....taker in the royal rumble him and bret fight off the final 4 then bret catches taker with a quick clothesline over the top and at WM10 Luger vs Hart and bret wins
5:47 When one of your marquee matches at Wrestlemania is making the fans chant "boring" at the action and "bulls**t" at the finish, you've done something seriously wrong.
Luger had the personality of a moth. But somehow he was over in WCW, come 96 all the way to 98. But then he turned heel, Russo and everything went down hill
Lex should of got the belt at summer slam. Even could off dropped it right back How can you expect the fans to stay behind him after a push like that. And not win. I mean they had balloons fall from the sky after the match.
@Michael C Bret was never as never at Lugers and stings level. Only bone headed fans like you think Chris Benoit or Chris Jerico can draw. Bret was a vanilla midget like charlie hass. He should have jobbed luger at Wrestlemania 10. The thing you are saying that lex luger wasnt over mainly came from jim cornettes crap podcast. The same guy has said Hogan wasnt great. No doubt that fool ran a promotion and it flopped. Because good in ring workers dont draw. Superstars do draw.
@Michael C WWF was a bigger draw than Bret. Bret was never a superstar. And if you aren't a superstar you cant draw. No doubt Bret had a cool attire and he looked handsome. His matches never connected with the crowd. Bret was absolutely boring to casual fans. Only teenage girls and a few kids cheered for him. Luger got much better reactions overall and was more over with the casual fans. No doubt WWF drowned during Bret harts reign. Saying Bret hart is a draw is equivalent of saying Kofi kingston is a draw. Because WWE would be the major drawing factor and not Kofi.
@Michael C Bret hart never sold Wembley. WWF sold it. Randy Savage and Ultimate warrior were the major reasons for its success. Davey boy Smith vs hart was the main event because Bulldog was from UK and WWF crowned him as the IC champion. Bret hart wasnt a draw even in Canada. He did slightly better business. Brets DVDs doing well doesnt matter. Its WWE propaganda machine that Undertaker, Shawn and Bret hart were great. Plus only a ton of hardcore fans buy them. Luger was a great physique and charisma. And if you think Lex luger didnt have charisma then you never went to school. Charisma doesnt necessarily mean mic skills. It's the presence that draws people to watch you. Bret was the exact opposite of that.
There's such revisionist history when it comes to Lex Luger's "Lex Express" run. He was INCREDIBLY popular going into SummerSlam 93. Go watch that match with Yoko. It was a great match for one, and he was white hot. They should have put the belt on him that night. He lost most of his momentum after the anticlimactic count out win in the main event of SummerSlam. To make matters worse, they had him celebrate like he won the title. It made him look like a blithering idiot. Gee, I wonder why he lost his momentum???
I have to disagree with JR m, he says that the ladder match only “came close” to following Bret v Owen.. That ladder match surpassed every match on that card and probably every match since Bret v Bulldog. And also saying Yoko had more experience than Luger.. Yoko was more skilled than 99% of the locker room but Luger had been at the top of the card in NWA/ WCW since mid 80’s
Lex should have never done the Yankee Doodle Dandy. It was corny and hokey even at the end for Hogan and was for Hogan as well in WCW. Lex should have been given a different Narcissist version. One edgier, funnier and nastier
Typical booking at the time throw the patriotic past it by then gimmick down everyones throats. Imagine that gimmick today with the state of that country now, liberal scum hating their country, flag, and anthem. Anyone doing the red white n blue thing would get CANCELLED FFS. JOKE COUNTRY.
I saw Lex Luger, and the lex express,,the afternoon before a house show he was at that I attended. He was not personable nor did he appear excited to see and greet fans (kids). I was never a fan after that.
Tbf, they made look him look like a geek for celebrating after winning by count out at SummerSlam 93.....should have given him the title and see what happens..."it didn't pan out" no shit....
