Lemme tell you the real 5 reason, 1 ,hurricane, humidity etc 2, unaffordable house compare with local income 3, high tax(15%) 4, high income tax 5, low salary ( probably the lowest in canada)
I think Halifax and NS in general needs to focus on one segment of the population and work to attract them to move to NS, if they want more people to come in. The issue the province is not fun for young generations for example No major shopping spots, no amusement parks, no great night ife … etc For seniors the health care system is enough reason to avoid moving. Even for students it’s not really that attractive choice. If you need more people to move to NS, the government need to focus on attracting one major segment of the population. That’s my advice Cheers from someone who lived in Halifax from 2011 to 2021 And those years were the best of my life.. I truly miss Halifax specially the moody weather 😄
Definitely a great perspective. I found that growing up here (on the peninsula) we had pretty great nightlife, there aren't any mega clubs but we certainly have our own brand of bars/live music venues. I would argue that the main factors keeping the younger generations away/unsatisfied are employment and the rental market. Spot on with the healthcare issue and I would say this is a pretty great university town honestly, I have a ton of friends who went to school in the city and loved it. The big deterrent/obstacle now though is once again the rental market. Really appreciate the feedback! Hopefully you'll be able to visit again soon,
It's a pro that you don't have high end designer stores or huge nightclubs, trust me. Fight to keep the charm of the place. It's one of 5 places in Canada that has history and authentic charm. I'd move there in a second but I'm a little scared of the storms, and don't want to leave my friends. Hope all the damage done by the recent floods has been patched up. Heartfelt sympathies to all the families affected. Sending love from the west coast.
NS is still in need of Doctors June 19 2023. I ran into people last Nov 2022 in Bridgewater, NS and they said they would move to Nova Scotia permanently but getting a doctor isn't allowing them. This problem has been ongoing now for years a good 5 years for sure with the large amount of people currently on a waiting list to get one. And the doctors online is sometimes out of the province where you have to pay extra for prescriptions. There may be free online doctors right in NS but any problem they can't solve online you have to visit one in person. Wait times aren't to bad but lets say Bridgewater hospital is busy with patients coming in by ambulance you could be waiting 8 to 12 hours in the ER easy. Even the hospitals in the HRM area can have long waits. Sometimes you can get lucky though and do 3hours and that's very good for Bridgewater. So yeah Nova Scotia isn't what you would call gravy. But there are some really good bonuses to NS. Many beaches throughout the province especially the east side! Summers have gotten warmer and usual a T will do in the evenings np! And radio Bingo every wed night CKBW lol
I lived there for 38 years. I grew up there. It was a great place to grow up but I felt depressed once I hit my 20s. That lasted into my 30 until I decided to move to Ontario. I think the weather may have had something to do with the depression. Lots of rain and fog in Halifax. Sometimes 3 or 4 months in the spring without a sunny day. I can’t say I miss Halifax. I have some fond memories of it but I do not think I’d ever move back. Most of my relatives have passed away which gives me less of a reason to return. Thanks for your review.
Thanks for the comment! The weather has changed pretty dramatically out here over the past 10 years or so. We still get a rainy spring but its certainly not rainy for more then a few days at a time. This past weekend (November) was 20 degrees for a few day which was crazy

First of all, I'm so thankful for your practical posts and information, I'm gonaa move in over there for 3weeks later but the thing that become my key concern is accommodation. I know rent prices increase so dramatically and I can't find a one- bedroom apartment in reasonable price. I really need help 🙏🙏
To add: Halifax is the only city in the province, and the province is a peninsula in the Atlantic, so it feels remote, and it's hard to get over this. The wind is 12 months a year, which is too much, and of course the rain, fog, clouds with dampness and cold makes it nothing like Vancouver: The maritimes have small windblown trees and baren landscape for a reason. Then culturally, well it's a very Scottish-Irish flavour, which can be great if that's your background. There's lots of Arabic now, so there's some big communities that have formed if you’re into that. Yes, It could use some industry and more jobs, and less big box stores that ruin the once great charm of the region. It's expensive to buy there too now… Dal is the only good university - Lucky there’s that.
For a salesman he is pretty good at discouraging people from buying his wares. You don’t often see a video where a realtor encourages you to avoid his home province.
I would add a 1 bed apartment is around the $2,000 mark the highest in Canada, Public transport not great, having trouble attracting bus drivers. One major drawback is the health care system is majorly broken. We have a suck ass Conservative Govt good if your rich not good if your on low income. Wages are low, disabled people not well catered for. Elderly people suffering. Crime rate high and rising. Young people studying sleeping on floors in apartments because they cannot afford to rent. Food is outrageously expensive. Taxes high. So Double think and check facts before considering coming here. Pluses are good climate over all, very nice people mostly. A very pretty province.

Tbh it’s hard to find a place in Canada that has a balance of everything. But hey each part of Canada is beautiful especially on peak of summer.
