As a yank, it has become a true pleasure to finally enjoy British and Euro videos featuring our cars as genuine competitors. Gone are the days of "yes but it will cry when it sees a corner" jokes. Our roads require extra "plushness", so the extra weight is understandable. Our fuel, thank f### is so much cheaper than what is paid across the pond, so a fat, heavier and lazier, V8 is possible. Never in a million years did I think I would see the day when American sports sedans would have more manual options than found in Europe. Very much enjoying your shenanigans on this side of the divide. Hats off.
Based on other BMW engine weights I've seen...I wouldn't be shocked if the B58 and LT4 are pretty close in weight, especially if the whole intake, cooling, and exhaust systems were laid out. The BMW 6s are sizable, especially the newer valvetronic engines. Only B58 weight I can find appears to be some incomplete definition (short or long block) with no details.
I found the fact that it got soundly "beaten" by a base M3 in this review pretty savage considering the 5BW's advantages in power and braking, MRC/PTM and the fact it was built and benchmarked to compete with M5 CS. The impression I took away is that it drives a bit like a European would expect an American car to drive on track - think Hellcat or a Challenger - i.e. boaty, difficult to control, bad handling. I can only assume Jethro was having an off day, doesn't much care for the blackwing, or most of the other reviews I've seen/read about it are wrong.
Did you see LS/LT based family irl? They're tiny, like literally tiny. Especially compared to giant wall of a straight six in BMW, with 1/3 of the car length. And check the weight as well. You'd surprised. No need to comment on lazier, you clearly have no idea how lazy turbo crap feels on the track compared to n/a V8.

As humanity struggles to use the blinker reliably, and would rather be surfing their phones while driving instead of driving, I'm concerned that in the name of "safety" humans won't be allowed to drive within a generation, let alone experience the joy of a manual transmission on the road...
@@VinceCannavaIIgood point, I think a manual forces you to adopt a more active driving style. So maybe people will pay more attention to the road and less to their phones when driving a manual!

Price is what determines what two items compete...oh, and Hagerty did a video on the CT5-V Blackwing and put it up against the M5 CS and the blackwing beat it around the track, so just to stop this little "argument" now
@@Kamran1025 1 sec on a 3 minute race course is not exactly "crushing" considering huge power difference in favor of M3 (real power difference, m3 is hugely underestimated). On the straight line yes, bmw is the king. Eurocars are consistently faster in a straight lines and slower in the corners for the past 10+ years.
Thanks for remembering why we like cars. It’s not all about speed. For miles per smiles, nothing beats a manual. Most of us aren’t going to track our cars. We are going to get those bits of road where we can run through a few gears and take a long while for our smiles to fade.
Well said. Unfortunately, less and less people are becoming interested in automotive culture. People praise electric vehicles just for the pure torque and speed it offers, but that's all it has. You step on the pedal and go. No sound, no manual, no fun.
It’s quite remarkable that the CT5-V Blackwing outperforms the M5 CS on the track. This really highlights the disparity in Top Gear’s reviews of American cars, often labeling them as ‘heavy’ and favoring the M3 as a superior track car - a view not commonly shared by other automotive channels. Moreover, it’s surprising that they overlook the exceptional transmission and chassis tuning of the Blackwing, which usually receives high praise elsewhere
A few things here. 1) Please contact Thomas Holland at Throttle House for some drifting lessons 2) What a great video that conclusively proves the superiority of the manual gearbox 3) either of these cars is the stuff of dreams that are probably not long for the world and 4) that Maverick Tremor is really all the truck that 99% of the world needs, maybe more than enough honestly.
The pain was obvious when you had to praise the Cadillac. It felt sooo heavy through the corners and underpowered on the straight but it lapped faster. Then you couldn't even control the non-comp M3 but the BIG 'OL Cadi had you grinning like a Ches cat during the drifts
There are certain types of cars where an auto-box is preferable - an M3 is not that type of car. As good as modern double-clutch affairs have become, and as nice as an auto is in city-driving or stop-and-go traffic, they'll never let you feel as involved with the driving as a manual. And that's a general problem with cars, these days, IMO: They've all become way more detached from the sensation of driving. The rise of the modern automatics is one factor here, the switch to electric power-steering is another. Just like with the autos, it doesn't matter how good electric power-steering has become, it'll never let you feel the car like a hydraulic system. The best option in this regard would be a car with *no* assisted steering and a properly sorted steering/front axle - like a Lotus Elise/Exige. The difference in feel between unaided and electric is about a large as the difference between sex with or without a condom.
The CT4-V BW is the competitor to the M4/3. The CT5-V is for the M5. Kind of an unfair comparison to a more nimble and lighter M3 on a really short track. Rigged as always to show the Euro cars not getting whipped.

Dual clutch is great for setting fast and consistent lap times. I don't do that. I drive to work and around some back roads for fun. And in those 2 environments, the manual is king. I dont need a coffee cup light on the dash and cameras watching my eyes to keep me engaged to the car and the traffic around me. I have a job to do. @@post-leftluddite The M5 is a better car. Cadillacs need significant extra power to be as quick. Lap times don't matter in this case, especially the Hagerty one, which is a stupid track with a configuration that proves nothing, and favors power and straight line speed, the M3 is a better drivers car and a better car full stop.
This is a holy grail among manual transmission sedans especially at a crucial time like this when the glory days of the car industry are slipping behind us...and to this think this gem would come out from America. Thankful.
As of this writing, a CT4-V Blackwing starts at $63,590. The M3 starting at $76,000. That is a $12,410 difference. The CT5-V Blackwing starts at $94,890, which is $18,890 MORE than the M3. So yes, the CT4-V and M3 do indeed compete with each other. Not just with size but closer to pricing as well.
This illustrates perfectly why manuals are better and it's because they require more of you as a driver. Hitting that 2-3 upshift is easy with knowledge and practice. This also highlights that power sliding is one component of drifting.
Manual gearboxes are probably better for NA and supercharged engines. The act of completely going off-throttle to change gear makes a turbo car lose a lot of steam between shifts, having to lose boost and taking time to get it back up. If both cars were auto, I think the M3 might have set the faster time.
Jethro and Chris are really the only ones keeping Top Gear alive. However, it's still not the same without Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and Richard Hammon.
I use to GAP m3's in my bone stock Cadillac ATS 2.0T .... The ATS-V its bigger brother will GAP a M4. Schmitty has done tunes on ATS-V with no mods and turned the car into a 10 second car....There not ONE bmw thats bone stock with only a tune running 10 seconds in the 1/4 so just stop it. And the blackwing....thats a whole another animal. But first you need to realize that GM doesn't show the actual power numbers of the V's so they decrease the V's numbers so they can continue to maximize corvette sales. After all who would want to buy a 2 door car when a 4 door car can do the same thing performance wise?!?! The blackwing is not only QUICKER but also FASTER than the M5 CS. The M5 CS does 0-60 in 3.3 seconds.... The blackwing does 0-60 in 3 seconds.... The top speed of the M5 Cs is 190...The top speed of the Blackwing is 200+!! Additionally the BMW ONLY has 627 HP with a TINY 553 LBs of torque. The blackwing however has 668HP and 659 LB of torque. THATS over 100+ more torque BONE STOCK than the M5 CS! LOL. Finally the M5 CS is $60K more.....So just IMAGINE someone dumping 60K in mods into a blackwing thats already QUICKER/FASTER than a BMW M5 CS to begin with. Finally... the Blackwing has a magnetic suspension 4.0 which again is superior to the adaptive m suspension.

@@G82Watts Hagerty did race the M5 CS, CT5V BW, and the Model S plaid around a "real track" the track is called Willow springs Raceway. It's a shorter track, but it still has its fair share of hard corners and apexes, and straights so as far as I'm concerned it's a "real track" on which the ct5 blackwing fairly beat the M5 CS and lost to the Model S. All three were driven on the same day (same conditions) by the same racing driver, Randy Pobst. So this is as fair of a showdown as it gets. @@G82Watts The caddy isn't about tenths of a second on track or quarter mile times, it's about fun and driver engagement. If you watch the Hagerty vid to completion that's what they mention about the Blackwing. It's a 668 hp RWD car and on an unprepped track it will suffer. If you care about all out performance in a four door package, I'd go for the Model S plaid over any BMW. That was another car that Hagerty reviewed, put 6 bus lengths between it and the BMW M5 CS completing the quarter mile in 9.3 seconds. Even on the Nurburgring it holds the record for the fastest production 4 door vehicle to lap the Nurburgring beating out all of BMW, Mercedes, and Porsches 4 door offerings including M5 CS, GT63, Panamera, taycan, M3, M3 Comp etc. My point is electrics like the Tesla plaid win in performance. The caddy is all about manual supercharged RWD V8 fun that BMW or no other European make offers. The turbo 3L 6 and the biturbo V8s maybe fast, but it's characterless and boring...especially compared to the glorious RWD supercharged V8s that power the CT5V Blackwing. 100% agree that automatic transmissions are the death of fun. I can’t stress this enough. Autos are now quicker and more fuel efficient, but more fun? Not a chance.
Need to stop pretending manual is superior. I drive a manual myself and I love the engaging factor of it, but comparing to auto its slower, less fuel efficient, and its mechanically a lot less sophisticated thus cheaper to make. There is no superior gearbox, there is only people who love cars. So stop pretending that manual is better and be more generous and let auto people into the community.
The gearing is so much more important than most people realize.. Most PPL are always looking at HP and 0-60 number's.. Granted that's all important But the transmissions have become more important and expensive than some motor's these days. PPL today have no idea just how good they have it when it comes to performance.. Not to sound old but it's true.. But neither are as quick as the 5VBW on the track. People saying that the test the Cadillac won on lap times were on a smaller track are so it would lose on the ring are also dumb. Smaller (lighter) cars have their strongest performance on small tracks. You put the 5VBW on the ring where it can unleash all the power without the constant struggle for rwd grip, it would stomp the bimmers. Every single track test has show this. Get outta here with these 0-60 times and 1/4 miles times. Get a Tesla or a Hellcat you want straight line
It is the reason why I own a manual 911. So much more involving than an auto. Plus, I'd gather I'd be quicker around a track than most drivers even if they were in an auto LOL!
Someone in fb group who rents out cars said; the manual cars he rents out have less incidents and less trivial things he has to help them out in comparison to the people who rent automatic cars. Which he concluded is because the drivers are smarter and better drivers.

That BMW would be great to own until the electronics, sensors, connectors and plastics start to fail, not to mention the inadequate A/C output for those 100F days.
I would absolutely buy a car with manual everytime IF it wasnt for the traffic jam. That makes you exchange your car right away right there. Just for pure driving i would prefer manual and be slower but with a smile on my face than quicker and with less emotions but just to brag about how fast you were. My dream car is a 911 GT3 Manual.
Why the Maverick? Why not a Durango Trackhawk or a Camaro/Mustang with a 10 speed. But these days a manual option is only available for the high end performance trim versions.
When you talk about clutch kicks and how an auto couldn’t do it, both vehicles with autos could power oversteer. Beemer wouldn’t have bogged with a zf , but it wouldn’t have bogged with a quick kick.
This is cool but my dad tried to buy a new M3 manual and it took a year and half for the dealership to say ehhh ur not gonna get it actually. Wish I could get my hands on one
I’m sorry for what I’m about to say. I work in the car industry and will tell you the cruel truth. Manufacturers are getting very greedy, they no longer want to pay anyone working for them, they want to take every single penny away from consumers pockets and the reality is that these “automatics/dual clutch” transmissions are meant to cost an arm and a leg to repair/replace. A manual transmission is relatively easy to replace although you really won’t need to replace one of built right and driven properly, contrary to these cheap autos that break often. Planned obsolescence folks!
My favorite is when they drive the cars at 110% and complain how you can't control them. Rode in a stock c7 z06 and the car would rip your face off in the corners and braking. It also was on the most invasive traction control setting and I heard traction control kick in less than a handful of times on numerous 20 min track sessions in 42 degree weather. I watch this and he's side ways in corners constantly and way into the throttle so early.....maybe you should not do that 😂. He also did the same with the BMW as well.
Nice attempt at spin but an M3 and CT5 are not in same vehicle segment, thus a Whack comparo. Put it up against an M5 Competition or AMG E63s and the outcome will look quite different. If I were to win a CT5-V BW, I'd take the financial hit and immediatly sell it. Then I'd purchase a very low mileage 3rd-gen CTS-V.

So true

5BW will destroy any bmw in existense on a racetrack (kinda obvious), short of m4 csl.
I find it hilarious that they mention price differences when it not in favor of euro. They always compare a 50k American sports car to a 150k euro car and act surprised that the interior isn’t as nice or it doesn’t have whatever new gadgets.
trying to import said american car bumps up the price to something like 120k, still not really a fair comparison whenever it happens though yes

German brands make good interior but rest of the car falls apart certainly aint no Toyota for quality
They cost about the same. A Cadillac in Europe would be more expensive.
@@Lemingtona-x5g Really? Which part of a German car falls apart? It's hilarious how your opinion is the exact opposite of the facts.

Underpowered? 570 vs 505 rwhp on a dyno (actually 505 is the comp)

Manual gear box is the best!
That third pedal is essential.
This illustrates perfectly why manuals are better and it's because they require more of you as a driver. Hitting that 2-3 upshift is easy with knowledge and practice. This also highlights that power sliding is one component of drifting.
The automotive industry needs to stop taking the driving out of cars.
Manual gearboxes are probably better for NA and supercharged engines. The act of completely going off-throttle to change gear makes a turbo car lose a lot of steam between shifts, having to lose boost and taking time to get it back up. If both cars were auto, I think the M3 might have set the faster time.

"I love the no lift shift" proceeds to lift
i'm doing my part - i have a 2020 Subaru STi and a 2024 Mustang GT which both are manuals
Qual é o nome da cor do BMW?
Que cor linda!
What is the name of the BMW color?
What a beautiful color!
The number of channels that Jethro Bovingdon is in there is just ridiculous....
This was hilarious fun. Loved it!
This drift test is a skill issue not the cars
I’m sorry for what I’m about to say. I work in the car industry and will tell you the cruel truth. Manufacturers are getting very greedy, they no longer want to pay anyone working for them, they want to take every single penny away from consumers pockets and the reality is that these “automatics/dual clutch” transmissions are meant to cost an arm and a leg to repair/replace. A manual transmission is relatively easy to replace although you really won’t need to replace one of built right and driven properly, contrary to these cheap autos that break often. Planned obsolescence folks!
Gearheads unite!
This was hardly an apples to apples comparison. Wildly different performance numbers, and fair bit different in price.
Brilliant work!
I love watching jersey plates in all this cars 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥jersey gang
Unless you’re racing for real, a manual is always a better choice.
The CT5 is the size of a 5-series BMW!!! Why do Journalists keep comparing it to the 3 series?
Nice attempt at spin but an M3 and CT5 are not in same vehicle segment, thus a Whack comparo. Put it up against an M5 Competition or AMG E63s and the outcome will look quite different.
If I were to win a CT5-V BW, I'd take the financial hit and immediatly sell it. Then I'd purchase a very low mileage 3rd-gen CTS-V.
Stop being afraid of the M3. Open up that motor and let it breathe baby yeah!
Float like a Cadillac, sting like a Beemer.
