Bone lengthening surgery is one of the most challenging surgical procedures, both physically and emotionally, as it involves breaking the leg bones to make a person taller, potentially resulting in a growth of up to 15 centimeters. PROCEDURE
In option number 1, an intramedullary nail is used, which is inserted into the bone, typically in the tibia, and secured with screws at the ends of the nail to prevent movement and stabilize the fracture. The professional then performs a controlled fracture and proceeds to separate the leg bone into two parts.
Meanwhile, in option number 2, a traction or external fixation device is used, which is embedded in the skin and bone using small screws. After fracturing the bone into two parts, this external device is periodically adjusted to stretch the bone in a controlled manner, allowing new bone tissue to form in the created space. In some cases, both techniques may be combined.
In both options, hospitalization is required for observation, with the administration of medications to control pain and prevent infections. This procedure extends beyond surgery; upon discharge, an intensive rehabilitation program is continued to improve leg mobility and strength. Additionally, the devices need to be adjusted daily for three months to achieve the goal of bone extension of one millimeter per day. Full recovery may take 7 to 9 months.
PRECAUTIONS
In the case of a patient who has opted for option number 1, the intramedullary nails, they will not be able to stand or walk until the healing process is complete as the intramedullary nail could deform or break. Meanwhile, for those who chose option 2, the external device, they can walk or move with the support of a cane or walker. However, the only downside is that they are less aesthetically pleasing and might be cumbersome.
It's crucial that in the case of having external devices implanted, special care is taken with the surgical incisions by keeping them clean and dry, and taking measures to prevent infections. A traditional infection can be complicated, but an infection in the bones is much more complex and dangerous, potentially leading to irreversible damage to the bones.
RESULTS
After 7 to 9 months, a person can gain an increase in height of up to 7 centimeters. Upon device removal, whether it's option 1 or 2, the person will be able to apply force and pressure to the intervened bone structure without assistance, gradually strengthening the new bone tissue. However, they will need to continue receiving physiotherapy to engage in more demanding activities such as running, dancing, and lifting weights.
Some individuals who undergo bone lengthening surgery aren't satisfied with just a 7-centimeter increase in height, so they opt for a second surgery involving another leg bone, in this case, the femur. This process is repeated, allowing them to grow up to 15 centimeters.
Although this procedure can fulfill the dream of many, it's not accessible to everyone due to its approximate cost of $175,000. Additionally, it's not performed everywhere but is available in countries such as the United States, Mexico, Peru, and Canada.

@@koobery_veteran It's the same like any leg fracture by injury. The risks happen because a lot of places don't follow up with the patients, and they lose muscle memory and muscle in general in the leg.

Running, jogging, extreme sports wise, yeah, which is understandable and fair, considering you'll be taller for the rest of your life + the fact that this is the same process that you go through if you had a leg fracture cause of an injury.
