Part of the reason for the extra buffer is it's really bad for the fuel pump to run the tank empty. The fuel acts to remove heat from the immersed pump, so you generally don't want to run the car under 1/4 tank, let alone to bone dry. Car companies probably know people wait until the gas light comes on, so have built in a buffer.

Wonder if its just a safety net. Like imagine your in the middle of nowhere with no gas stations in sight and your meter hits zero, now you've got 100km until you are truly screwed.

    • @Chris-th6wq
      @Chris-th6wq 3 года назад +12

It's not a safety net, it's a design safety thing. This is a diesel injected car, and running it dry will absolutely fuck the inner workings of the engine. I'm pretty sure Hamish later said they ended up having to sell this as a result.
You can run past empty for say 20-30km to get fuel, but anything past that and you're actively destroying the car.

I feel the reason why car manufacturers are telling you that your car is almost is gonna go on empty is becuase they dont want you to runnout of petrol and start pumping air into the cylinders at all csuse the bearings can be damged, so its a saftey feature to save your car from getting replacements.
On reasurance if you run out of petrol cause your car says it does, just know you still have at least 1 to 2 gallons left depending on what car you have so that you have time to refuel up your car with petrol.
So you can drive up to another 50 to a 100 miles

Keep in mind driving with low fuel is bad for the pump since it's cooled by the fuel. And you can't count on any specific empty range since driving conditions and weather have a big impact. City driving you might be lucky to go half that distance.

So I know this might be hard to believe, but I did a equation to figure out exactly what it would look like to leave a string representing how much fuel you use behind you as you drove forward. In my car that gets 30 miles to the gallon, that means whenever I drive I'll be leaving a string of fuel behind me the thickness of one normal head hair.

Have they never noticed that when they stop with 0km left per the computer that when they fill, they end up putting in 2 or 3 gallons (litres or whatever) less than the capacity of the fuel tank in the owner's manual? I think this is the way the manufacturer kind of builds in a virtual "reserve tank", like on a motorcycle. It keeps dolts from running out of gas on the freeway.

Coming home from a holiday last year driving a mazda cx 7, we were racing to get to a petrol station. But it stopped literally as soon as it told us 0kms left 😂😂

Do you think maybe the car had calculated the range for city driving which obviously is a smaller distance rather than on a freeway

I ran out of fuel in my BA XR6T because I trusted the machine. I ran out when it said I had 26km to go.

@Hamish & Andy try this. Full the tank. Reset computer (also consumption). Drive in city to empty (not empty but 0km/mile) and then drive in city to dry it. It´ll be maybe 30km or 40km with SQ5. :) You will get proper data and more accurate test. :) Have nice day

That's pretty cool. It could probably go only 68.9 miles so, 111kilometers is farther;)

To be fair, it first dropped from 10 km to 0 when you were on surface streets, where your consumption is much less efficient.

We did 30kms towing a large boat on an empty tank once. We were in the middle of the desert and had to get to the next servo.

All depends on acceleration and how much petrol you're using. Freeway it'd be barely any

Any poor student found out this secret almost immediately. The worst part is putting your last 5$ in on fuel after youve already been driving on empty for a day or two and the fuel meter never moves.
