That was Berry Oakleys bass line spot on. Berry oakley was a distinct bass player that gave the original Allman Brothers their sound. That was the first time I have heard the original bass line which really kicks ass. Oakleys bass playing is still the melodic foundation of the original ABB and he was a big of a deal as Duane Allman.
I just had my 7th knee surgery Todd and I'm sitting in the hospital watching your video. I could watch you play bass everyday my friend! Thanks for putting me in a much better mood!!
Being from Macon n a bassist myself, God knows how many times iv played this, probably enough to get my own royalty check lol. That's got to be one of the best dead on versions of someone playing this. Get down bro! Saw where you did thorzaine shuffle too. Mule has been my favorite band since their birth. I'm a huge Woody fan n influenced bass player. Play load n proud bro!!!
Man thanks so much David! I just plug my bass into a Boss GT-10b for some compression on this one going straight into the camera. Stings were some 10 dollar Dunlops I had laying around. Thanks again brother!
You are playing with I think the proper hand positioning for the verses - it just sounds and feels right. I play it down at 5th fret on E string. I might have to rethink it. Thanks
thank you so much thriftdig. I'm not sure if that's how Berry played it or not but for me it's just easier to get that bouncy feel that way. Thanks again man :)
@thriftdig -- I play it that way as well! I saw a moment in a video of Berry playing it in that position too. He had such great dexterity and economy of movement that it appeared that his fingers barely moved.
Oh man dude your a awesome Bass guitar player, I am Pete dorio friend he recommended my to watch and follow you, did you study music or take lessons or something like that, how long have you been playing for? Thank you.
Thank you so much Scotty! I’m 53 now and started playing bass when I was about 15. I played up until I was about 32 and didn’t play at all for about 13 years. I started back at 45 and at that time started learning to read music and music theory. This year I started taking lessons from Anthony Wellington and I have learned so much in that time. Thanks for watching brother!!!
@@toddhamby , Hey wow dude, my mom and dad bought me a Yamaha Bass, back when I was a very young teenager, because my oldest brother Gary played the guitar and bass and took lessons he did not know how to read music but he just took guitar lessons,he played in several bands around here in Elizabethton Tennessee where I live and Pete dorio lives, but back when I was a young teenager I did not mess with the bass that much I learned very very little for my oldest brother Gary, because he left and moved out of state, but I am 50 years old now and the middle of this February I will be learning the bass guitar for 2 years the middle of this February coming 2019,I can tell when I'm in key or out of key and the right note or the wrong note in the song but I just don't know where to go from there I know all my major minor scales I know the entire fretboard on a 4 5 or 6 string bass,I know the numbering system and how it works inside the scale or major minor triads major minor Pentatonix Dorian mode mixolydian mode but the other modes I'm kind of lost with, I am playing with two bands right now or two different groups of people should I say, I did play at my church for praise and worship team and choir and all for about a year-and-a-half , I was like you I hadn't touched my bass or looked at it in what 30 years I guess due to personal issues and stuff going on back when I was young younger teenager so that's about a 30 year span not even looking or touching the bass until almost 2 years ago, when I finally did started to decide to pick it back up and start trying to learn it again from zero, it's been tough and hard but I love playing the bass guitar and I learn something everyday every time I pick it up I'm trying to learn something but thank you for your feedback I appreciate that, and would you say if I can tell if I'm in the right key or not in a song or in the wrong key or not in the song that I do have a good ear for music? I just don't know where to go in the song if they tell me a, A flat major I know what notes to play I just don't know what comes after the root note so I'm lost, unless I just sat there and listened to them play and I full around on the fretboard in the scale till I find the right notes where they're fitting in at and I can pretty much do that but a lot of people out there don't want to full with you doing that, some groups will and some people will but they're good people and that's hard to find anymore, thank you so much sir.
Yes... I picked up the bass again after a 29 year layoff! Life got in the way for many years, but I picked up my old '78 P-bass again last September (playing with some good old guys), and it feels like I found my center again! Thanks for your great vids! Berry Oakley is in my top 5 fave bassists. Tragic we lost him at such a young age, but man, what an innovative and natural talent he was!
Welcome back to the bass world! I took a 13 year leave of absence as well. However, I’m having more fun now than ever playing. Berry was truly a freak of nature, My wife, daughter, and me went and paid our respects a few months ago in Macon. Where are you located by the way?

I just don't get the 2 thumbs down at all. Excellent cover
Thanks Buzzy! I get told I’m stinky on the reg. I appreciate the kind words brother :)
0:30 The first A is low A, then immediately to the octave above. The second time it's all the high A.
Thanks for pointing that out.
Fucking awesome dude!!!
Thank you!!
Muy Excellente!
Thank you so much Daniel!
Oh my.
:)
Ur great!
thank you!
Kramer is bad ass
Hey Sir!
Oooooooooowwwwwwwwwwweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
thank you!
Nice interpretation! But the first note on the verse is a low A on the E String, followed by a triplet on the A one octave up on the D string.
Thanks and you are correct about the low A, however I'm pretty sure those aren't triplets but broken sixteenths and eight notes?
I stand corrected! :-) And by the way, that bass has such a wonderful tone!
Thank you sir! The very first bass that I ever got was one of these back In 1980. They are heavy as heck though! Do you play as well?
Yes... I picked up the bass again after a 29 year layoff! Life got in the way for many years, but I picked up my old '78 P-bass again last September (playing with some good old guys), and it feels like I found my center again! Thanks for your great vids!
