Gives me chills. My daddy brought me up listening to Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs... the list is endless. When I really miss him I always turn on bluegrass.
My dad loved bluegrass and of course since I loved everything he did, I loved bluegrass and still do. He died in March and even though I rarely get through one song without crying, it still makes me happy thinking about him.
In my opinion, Ricky Skaggs, is the best choice to carry on the tradition that Bill started. There are plenty of bluegrass singers and bands, but I believe Skaggs best embodies what Monroe started, and is best suited to carry it forward.
I saw Ricky perform Country Boy at the Grand Ole Opry. You couldn't even see his fingers, they were moving so fast. I hope the audience appreciated how much they were blessed with these two legends being on the stage at the same time!
About '94 or '95, the wife and I saw Bill Monroe at Heartwood Acres at a free outdoor concert put on by Allegheny Co., PA. Between songs, Bill commented on the size of the crowd, which was quite large. He even, at one point, took photos of the audience during the show, something I've never heard of any other live entertainer ever doing. I made my way 300' or so to the stage and requested "In the Pines," which they played. Great show.
Oh gosh I love In The Pines! I heard Loretta Lynn sing that and I loved it instantly. Loretta passed this year and even though she lived a good long life I will miss her. RIP Loretta. You certainly earned it. God bless. 💙 😇
I saw Ricky in concert in Knoxville Tennessee in the early 80's. I remember it snowed that day but that didn't keep us away. It was a great concert and so much fun. My hubs and I went with my brother and sister-in-law. We hadn't been married long. I'll never forget that night. I'm a Tennessee girl and love some good bluegrass that I can tap my foot to. Always loved Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder! 💙 God bless 'em.
I had forgotten just how downright GOOD these men were (RIP Bill Monroe). I had to laugh at Monroe's expression at one moment: when they are crowding the mic, Rikki reaches up and tips Bill's hat away from his head in mid lyric. Always a pro, Bill finishes the lyric, then gives Rikki a 'quizzical' look. Wonderful gem!
I'm from Rosine Kentucky, my dad was born in Uncle Pens' cabin. I'm Still currently located here and would not have it any other way. My Grand Parents and Dad and other kin always said that Bill Monroe never wanted to work, and all he wanted to do was play music...Me being a musician myself have to politely tell them that music is work, it's also an art...I had to work to learn my instrument. We still have great bluegrass here in Rosine every weekend at the barn...I don't play bluegrass myself, I'm more into rock n Roll,or Blues but I still love being in Rosine Ky.
ABSOLUTELY 1st class performances from Ricky Scaggs singing this particular song Love Blue Grass music. Was brought up listening to it ,l am now 73 years old. And still listening to Ricky at this time of the early morning , over here in SCOTLAND REGARDS ELIZABETH ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
this is heavy metal folk, these guys, they were on something in the 40's man, wow, these sound came out of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this is as American as the 5 strings banjo.
In 1975 I saw Bill Monroe in Louisville Ky. in a club called The Great Midwestern Bluegrass Hall. ( I was told later Bill did not approve of alcohol). Late in the evening the crowd was getting loud. and he actually waved his band off midsong and told us, "IF YOU CAN'T KEEP TIME, DON'T CLAP. YOU'RE THROWING THE BAND OFF!....Spanked by the father of bluegrass. You could have heard a pin drop.
So glad my Papa introduced me to bluegrass as a boy. As I got older it was “our thing”. He’s gone on now, but I still have great songs like this to remind me of him.
I also grew up with Bluegrass in my Grandparents home! Mom played Guitar, Uncle the Banjo! Neighbors would stop in with fiddles and mandolins! Bluegrass is in my blood!
Last time I seen Ricky Scaggs was in my dad's basement Ronnie Smith aka (Butch) with Allison Krause and my uncle Pepper Smith gearing up in Mansfield Illinois for the town festival about 33 years ago or so. Then out of nowhere I heard ur name being called on stage last night at the covered bridge festival in Elizabethton TN. So I said what the hell and stuck around and glad I did. Ur still an amazing musician and wanted to thank you for bringing back memories I didn't know even existed. I've struggled so hard in this life that I can't remember half my life. I'm actually thinking about playing again and teach my boys the music I learned on the riverbanks of Livingston KY. With some of the worlds best bluegrass pickers. If ur ever in east Tennessee and need backup I'm only a phone call away. Thanks again.
Actually he was around 80 or better here. He was 84 when he passed in 1996. I'm not sure exactly what year this show was, but I would guess by looking that is was around 1992, 1993 or so.
I love bluegrass music myself and Bill Monroe is the man that took the blues coming out of Memphis and the country coming out of Nashville to play what is bluegrass music today, awesome!
Ricky Skaggs had done a tremendous job of carrying the torch passed on by Bill Monroe and that generation of bluegrass musicians. God Bless Bill Monroe and RS!
I met Ricky Skaggs backstage of the Oklahoma Philharmonic..I yelled out in the quiet....I LOVE YOU RICKY SKAGGS... next thing I know...backstage passes..I thought i was getting barred from the Philharmonic 1st cuz I yelled it...lol...my 1st love of music...always amd forever BLUEGRASS!!!! He was an amazing and kind man, and met his song writer of a few of his songs from oklahoma...an amazing memory.😊
I love brother bill. My pappy died in 1998. Timber cutter and worked in the zinc mill . He was tired and wore out. He took off his oxygen hose and fell asleep he was 82. He didn't complain and died like a man.
yeah, my dad played the banjo with Bill in the late 50s an he would not put up with drinkin, dad said he got into the bass player one time n said, you don't think I cant smell that ol vodika!
@kent12456 LOL that is cool. Wish I could have seen him perform, Im a young girl who grew up on bill and faltt and scruggs and ricky and so on, i was born in 1980, but im bluegrass to my roots for sure.
Here is a video of me playing the tune on the fiddle, with a link to the lesson, tablature, and practice MP3s: Uncle Pen played on the fiddle. Link to lesson!

You can hardly get better than these two singing a fabulous song loved it
You can't get more epic then the legendary Bill Monroe and Ricky Skaggs together on this great song!!
Music I grew up on! I still love Bluegrass Music and just turned 70! My whole life!
Same here. I have 12 years on you.
Gives me chills. My daddy brought me up listening to Bill Monroe, Flatt and Scruggs, Ralph Stanley, Ricky Skaggs... the list is endless. When I really miss him I always turn on bluegrass.
Tricia Clark I do the same when I'm missing family that's gone.....
Must have made you beautiful! All that beautiful music.
My dad loved bluegrass and of course since I loved everything he did, I loved bluegrass and still do. He died in March and even though I rarely get through one song without crying, it still makes me happy thinking about him.
Glad the music that helps you cope is the best music. Those are some fine names you mentioned.
My grandpa all them all too.
We need more of this now in 2024
Yes, sir!
Amen ❤❤❤wooooooo Johnny From Alabama

Agree on that.
The Keeper of the Key.
I've always loved that uncle Penn song was thrilled when it went to no one
Sorry I think Billy Strings bypassed Ricky a few years ago.
And now Carson Peters is coming up behind Ricky Scaggs. No disrespect to Mr Scaggs or Mr Monroe, but bluegrass music is alive and well!!!
I "met" Mr. Monroe backstage in Atlanta in 1973. Scared me to death to be so close to such a legend.
Great memory.
Can't beat this kind of music!!!! Especially with these two performing it. LOVE IT!!!!!!
Sandra you're right having those two performing together is beautiful
Rickey skaggs is one of the most talented musicians of many instruments. He is awesome
I saw Ricky perform Country Boy at the Grand Ole Opry. You couldn't even see his fingers, they were moving so fast.
I hope the audience appreciated how much they were blessed with these two legends being on the stage at the same time!
I love this song, it rocks it rolls it rings it sings
My Mom played this song on the guitar and her brother on the banjo, I grew up dancing and loving bluegrass!
About '94 or '95, the wife and I saw Bill Monroe at Heartwood Acres at a free outdoor concert put on by Allegheny Co., PA. Good ole Ricky. Cousin of mine and love hearing him pick and sing. My dad played with him and Keith growing up.
They all make it look so easy. I love watching this level of talent.
Done right it's legit legal $$$
I saw Ricky in concert in Knoxville Tennessee in the early 80's. I remember it snowed that day but that didn't keep us away. It was a great concert and so much fun. 2 good old boys from Kentucky... Proud to be from the Bluegrass State as well!!!! RIP Mr Monroe 💔🙏💔 😢
One of my favorites. God blessed and still does bless Bill Monroe .
Ricky Scaggs always treated Bill Monroe with great respect
on and off the stage.
Marty Stuart did the same.
Bobby Hicks you are a fiddle God! We love you in Montgomery TX Bobby!
Hicks is missed
Rest in Paradise Bobby! You were/are the best and you’ll be so missed! 8/14/2024 was a sad day.

if the good lord wanted bill to work...we'd have no bluegrass and that's the god honest truth of the matter.

I sure do miss Mr. Bill Monroe.
Greatest misicians!!!
this is heavy metal folk, these guys, they were on something in the 40's man, wow, these sound came out of the Blue Ridge Mountains, this is as American as the 5 strings banjo.
True of the 5 string but you do know the banjo's roots are African.
And bluegrass' roots are european! A true statement made then.
And heavy metal is British.
Just thinking about that feeling to share a mic with Bill Monroe.. 👌. Must be an happy Ricky!
ol school country ol school blues ol school rock n roll does not get better

Bill never put up with foolishness.
Wow! Amazing!
Bill would step out into an audience to "express" his point.
It's Feb. 21, 2024 and still love my
I remember my mom playing this with my Uncle Boog on the banjo, and us kids all danced! Good memories!
Good Gosh, I had breakfast with Bill Monroe and his band at the Union 76 Truck stop in Madison Wi

Ole bill was feeling good, that’s a pair of my favorites right there
So glad my Papa introduced me to bluegrass as a boy.
I saw Ricky at the Knoxville World's Fair in 1982. He was just starting out in country music, and I knew he would be a success.
Last time I seen Ricky Scaggs was in my dad's basement Ronnie Smith aka (Butch) with Allison Krause and my uncle Pepper Smith gearing up in Mansfield Illinois for the town festival about 33 years ago or so. I agree... saw them twice up here in Ontario Canada. Incredible!
@@RIDDYxMUSICH
If they were any tighter, they'd be one person. :-)
Classic! One of my all time faves!!!
Bill Monroe was about 70 years old here, but he was keeping pace with the rest of the musicians on that stage.
Actually he was around 80 or better here. He was 84 when he passed in 1996. I'm not sure exactly what year this show was, but I would guess by looking that is was around 1992, 1993 or so.
Bill Monroe is a bluegrass legend love Uncle Pen it's a great song
I love bluegrass music myself and Bill Monroe is the man that took the blues coming out of Memphis and the country coming out of Nashville to play what is bluegrass music today, awesome!

You can take the boy out of Kentucky (40 years ago) but you'll never take the Kentucky out of the boy.

Exactly! Still love a good hoedown on someone's front porch!
Amen to that brother!!! Even in big orange country!!!
Foot stomping for sure is what I'm doing.. love this.

If Bill Monroe said Ricky was 11, then Ricky was 11. No arguing. This is a good'un.
@Ricky Skaggs if your the real Ricky, which church does Dennis call home?
Yes he is! He lives in Marshall, NC.
I love brother bill. My pappy died in 1998. Timber cutter and worked in the zinc mill . He was tired and wore out. He took off his oxygen hose and fell asleep he was 82. He didn't complain and died like a man.

i love how the steel player is wearing a coat with an AT&T logo. I'm imagining that he worked his day job then came and played the gig.
That'd either lloyd green or Terry crisp
BTW, the peddle steel player is wearing an A-2 flight jacket.
Terry Crisp. You'd be surprised how many work jobs other than music. Music is their love however.
Mr Bill playing for Jesus.

They are probably a bunch of Justin Bieber fans.
