The first laminated glass put in cars had a layer that would darken and become brittle over time. In the late 1930s, manufacturers began using Polyvinyl Butyral (PVB) to make auto glass clearer and stronger as well as to help block sound and harmful ultraviolet rays. By 1937, safety glass became mandated for all cars. Changes occurred slowly throughout the years with innovations like the curved windshield from Studebaker in the 1940s.

Great to hear from the team themselves! I will say that this design intent is not translating to the end product, based on my experience with my 2018 Model 3 and 2021 Model Y. Even with the double-paned glass in the Model Y, it’s quite noisy in the cabin at highway speeds. Phone calls are not pleasant. It is still a fantastic product, and with further improvements it will get even better.

Having seen competitors car's insides (For example Porsche Taycan and other), being an engineer and designer, I must say WOW, there are worlds between Tesla's advanced cars and any other car manufacturer's chaotic, often dangerous attempt to put something together quickly. Nightmare to see a Taycan or VW ID3 or Ford Mach-E open as an engineer. Makes you feel both sorry for the future customer and the mechanic who has to bite his teeth when sorting out the nightmare Those companies made, trying to compete with any Tesla from today's excellent tech and quality wonders to even the first Tesla Roadster, 17 years back. TESLA and SpaceX function very similar. It's impressive, the speed of innovation and focus on safety and quality in both companies.
Like most other car manufacturers were already doing thermal and antinoise glass. But still people will be impressed when Tesla shows they do it. Power of hype. P.S. To all haters that will hate this comment: You hate it because it's true. Tesla is amazing car but you should not think they reimagined the car. They made it drive autonomusly and made very good bateries and engines. Everything else has been on a market for a looooong time. You just didn't knew that.
They really did lol. 2014, model S rated “best car ever” by consumer reports. 30k cars with laminated acoustic glass. They completely proved everyone wrong with the concept of an electric car. They made the first 5 star safety rating SUV and then went on to make the safest car on sale. They then went on to put sell the Toyota Corolla with the model y. Clearly, they are doing the right stuff
Interestingly I saw an Audi e-Tron with the 'rainbow roof' recently too, seems like others are still using that despite the colour it causes when wet. I think some would love it and some would hate it, probably why Tesla moved away from it. :)
I have always been windows down driver, since owning my Tesla I always drive my car windows closed after seeing this video now I know why, and it is bloody nice and quiet.

@@CanIbeFrank thanks for the infos. I hope that you are not trying to communicate, that the current technology level (that Tesla is also using) is nothing more than it was 80 years ago. :D

the only channel where viewers want more and more videos
I am all in for videos like this! Makes me appreciate Teslas even more. As a soon-to-be Model Y owner, this just a reassurance of what goes into those fantastic cars. Nothing is even close.
You have no clue what you're talking about. Laminated glass is exciting for your little brain?
Great to hear from the team themselves! I will say that this design intent is not translating to the end product, based on my experience with my 2018 Model 3 and 2021 Model Y. Even with the double-paned glass in the Model Y, it’s quite noisy in the cabin at highway speeds. Phone calls are not pleasant. There are a lot of variable factors, like location, temperature, tires, etc. but I’m happy to get in touch with the team to help determine how further improvements can be made.
It is still a fantastic product, and with further improvements it will get even better.
glad to see one realistic comment on this video. the whole time i’m saying to myself “teslas are not quite on the highway”
I just got 2023, so much quieter than my earlier model Y. Good to see Tesla continuously improving. Good to know they put 2 layers of films on roof.
The Model S is extremely quite.
Just got my 2021 model 3. Way more quite compared to all my 3 series bmws and my Mercedes gle350 on the freeways and city speeds.
I agree but wonder if it’s not the glass itself but all the connections/seams. My 2022 LRY isn’t particularly quiet either. It doesn’t feel “tight” And the top of my head gets very very hot March-October in Austin, TX
Crazy to see how far they have come from the first models. Tesla is lightyears ahead of Tesla
@its fine No it's not. Stop plastering this crap everywhere. Once is more than enough
Thanks Tesla for making just such an amazing selection of cars. Can't belive the amount of good engineering that goes in to Tesla vehicles.
the passion in these engineers are kick-ass 👊👊👊❤️❤️❤️
Literally they are working on each detail. 🔥
I love this informational Style video tesla! keep them coming😁
I love how he shows us how good the glass is while wearing a shirt with a broken glass print 👌
This is a great format. I'd love to get more videos of Tesla engineers explaining why their thing is cool.
Wow. This video alone just puts another "Pros of Tesla" on my checklist of potential EV crossovers for my next vehicle. ❤️👍🏼

W140 features included:
Double-paned soundproofed glass was a new S-Class innovation first fitted on the W140. This form of window glazing allowed for improved soundproofing, reduced condensation, and other insulation benefits.
Electrically-operated exterior mirrors could be folded by switch to ease driving in narrow spaces.
'Parameter steering' was a system which made low-speed driving easier by reducing the effort required to maneuver in speed-sensitive situations such as parking.
Rear-parking markers, or guide rods. These rods extended from the rear corners of the trunk lid when in reverse, providing the driver with a guideline for rear maneuvers. In 1995, this system was replaced by the sonar-based Parktronic system which measured the distance of the bumpers to nearby obstacles.
12-way powered, heated front seats, with 3 setting memory functions and lumbar support.
Windshield wipers with heated washer system. Later models also included rain-sensing windshield wipers.
Electrically-operated automatic-dimming inside rear-view mirror that tied into the seat and steering wheel memory.
Heated exterior mirrors. Later models also included auto-dimming driver's side mirror.
Orthopedic seats were an expensive option from the factory but consisted of several different air cushions in the seat that the user can inflate and deflate to find the perfect driving position.
Dual-zone climate control. Four-zone climate control on LWB models.
Reclining and heated rear seats on LWB models. V12 models also have the four-place seating option, which allows fully adjustable rear seats, lumbar support and rear sunshade control. The center seat has been replaced by a burlwood center console, allowing a 2 + 2 seating format.
The climate control system could be set to operate for 20 minutes after the engine had been turned off.
Electric rear sunshade.
Rear passenger illuminated vanity mirrors.
Soft-closing doors and trunk.
Leather interiors and burl inserts (optional; standard for 500SEC/CL 500).
In 1995 the S 600 Coupe became the first Mercedes car with GPS navigation system, designated Auto Pilot System APS. It featured CD-ROM maps and full color navigation display in the center dashboard.
In 1996 the Linguatronic voice control system and Parktronic sonar-based parking system were introduced
In 1997 the TELEAID emergency and tracking system was introduced in the US market.
Also, developed with the car, a Bose sound system was available as an option.
The attention to detail is incredible.

@@CanIbeFrank Good to know?
@@atlasdev they didn't create anything. They just steal things and give it new names

Reducing exterior noise with this approach to glass has been done for decades
More of this please
I love how they're wearing the shattered glass T-shirt.
Just a casual flex of how far ahead Tesla is of their competition … even down to their glass ✅ 💪 🚗
Acoustic glass isn't new. A lot of high end cars have it.

Bring back rainbow roof. Please 🙏
Is it not 50/50 anymore JJ?
Interestingly I saw an Audi e-Tron with the 'rainbow roof' recently too, seems like others are still using that despite the colour it causes when wet. I think some would love it and some would hate it, probably why Tesla moved away from it. :)
hahahah, 2017 Tesla model 3, you might find some on 2nd hand market :) ...2021 model is very different.
Had a leak on my middle panel, 2020 M3, they replaced it with a new old stock rainbow glass
