If there's one thing we've learned over the past few years of sailing around the world: There's no perfect sailboat! The catamaran vs monohull debate is mostly hype and we've done our best to stay away from adding to the noise.
When we heard our friends from Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose are thinking of selling their monohull to purchase a catamaran, we invited them to come crew with us...and that led to talks of cruising life in a mono vs a cat.
We were talking about it anyway so why not film and share? In this video we're discussing price and performance.
We hope you find this conversation based on our collective experiences helpful. If you're in the market to purchase a sailboat remember the Mantra: Spend Smart and Stress Less. Monohull or multihull...in the end the best boat is the one you can afford to purchase now.
⭐ After you hit that play button we'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments below: What's you're preferred style of sailboat? Are you in the Monohull or Catamaran camp...or maybe you'd prefer to sail a mono but cruise in a cat? What's your favorite brand? It's always fascinating to read what draws each person to one type/brand/style of sailboat.

after watching few of these mono vs cat, i feel most start off with mono then upgrade to cat later when they want comfort to live aboard and have enough money saved to upgrade. either way you have the same experience when visiting islands and same experience sailing in storms.

When I used to ride motorcycles often I was asked what is my favourite bike. My answer was always the same; the one I am riding now. My sense is it would be the same regarding sailboats.
I own a monohull, a big fat bottomed girl, cutter rigged Bayfield 32 and for me, right now, everything considered, I love it. Either the boat suits my sailing habits, or my sailing habits suit the boat, but it works. I’m sure if I owned a cat I’d feel exactly he same.
That said If I’m shopping for my next boat, price is a defining factor and would probably take the cat out of the equation, but if the boat has sails and Mother Nature is giving me some wind, I’ll still be thrilled.

A discussion that never gets old! We bought our monohull (Catalina 42) instead of a catamaran, simply due to price. We just couldn’t afford to even consider a catamaran. But, all things being equal, we would have gone for a cat. Just for the room. Offshore, I’d rather be in a mono hull, but we just don’t spend much time offshore. Enjoyed your video!

Great comparison, looking forward to part 2. I noted your conversation on Antifouling and from experience we had a 51 monohull with a 7 foot draft and now a 48 foot Catamaran with 4 ft draft. We use less antifouling on the catamaran as there is so much less surface area below the waterline, even though we have 2 hulls. Keep up the great work guys and thanks.

The backdrop in your discussion about mono vs multi hull boats is just surreally outrageous. The cocktails are a multiplier.
The information about which type of boat allows my fantasy to go to the next level because any sailing in the South Pacific I do will be as a visual stowaway on your boat.
Great videos, stories. Lots of fun! Thank you.

The way I evaluate the relative values in comparing mono-hulls v. catamarans must include price per square foot and/or price per cubic foot. When you do that the catamarans often work out to cost less and are a better value.
Also, I believe that all categories are not equal; and therefore, a weighted average to account for which factors are more important than others must be used. This weighted average is highly personal but look to what you do most often and what categories contribute to increasing your confidence in sailing or enjoyment at both anchor or sailing.
Sailing Yacht Ruby Rose has videos which use five categories: safety & design, build quality, interior design, performance, and value for money. Their videos offer lots of valuable information. My issue is whether each category is of equal weight.
    Thanks for sharing.

I loved this video on the Monohaul vs the catamaran.. I agree it is the most asked question when someone goes and buys a boat.. for personally I would choose the catamaran owners hull only because of the separation from the guests or family... That wonderful keel on Ruby Rose makes her a my favorite monohull. I like heavy displacement mono and cat sailboats for their comfort in rough seas and their load carrying capacity, compared to low displacement ones. Speed is nice but it rates below a high displacement boat for cruising. If my choice was between a Southerly or a Lagoon of the same length, I would chose the Lagoon. This was an excellent discussion and I cannot wait for Part 2.....thank you, both couples!!!!

Not something I'm terribly interested in, mainly because I couldn't drag my wife on to a sailboat with a brace of Clydesdales, but informative nonetheless. Personally I think it's basically the Ford/Chevy debate. Everyone on each side thinks they have the better craft but you all did a really good job showing that the debate is really all about 10% and the other 90% is about equal. Good job you two, and keep the videos coming.

Having sailed a 36' McGregor cat in the Marshall islands, three things: 1. No bruise sailing. Boat doesn't heel over anywhere like a mono hull. 2. Most stable position of heavy keeled monohull is on the bottom. Most stable position for most cats is just upside down. We could fill our cat with water and sail away. 3. Speed 4. Watched a long term cruising family jump over the side and swim to shore at an anchorage during a typhoon. Their boat was pitching an rolling too much to allow sleep. (Of course being on the shore watching their boat didn't make sleeping very easy either). Our Cat was just going thru some more gentle pitching motion. No roll. TWO HULLS TO CLEAN. While we had seen 22kts under sail, the normal cruise speed was more like 9kts and even then on some seas you had to watch jumping off the back of a wave into the face of another, risking pitchpoleing. Didn't enjoy passages as they, even with the numerous squalls, were boring. We didn't have an autopilot though so constant hand steering was required.

My husband and I had this discussion for years. He was a 4th generation boat builder. Our first boat together was a small racing catamaran. The question of speed always made us lean towards the catamaran as our choice to circumnavigate the world. My best friend (husband) went to work one day & at the age of 50 died of a heart attack. My point is: do your homework... but, just go for it! These folks did and I loved their collaboration. ~ Love from a fellow Texas sailor💙

In a nut shell, cats sail ON the water, mono’s sail IN the water. Cats are faster, more spacious, better to entertain on. Monos are cheaper to own, safer in heavy weather, and Point marginally higher. They also cost less. After a Cyclone/Hurricane, you may see monos washed up on beaches, but you don’t see them flipped upside down like a turtle on their back. Cats are faster, much more spacious and deep down, I think 98% of us mono owners have a deep secret fantasy of owning a nice cat one day...

    • @ppumpkin3282
      @ppumpkin3282 5 лет назад +3

Pretty much it. But when I get my nice cat, it will be when my heavy weather sailing is over. Also Cats have shallower drafts. Also I've heard that Cats are not good upwind - and the difference is more than marginal - but I don't have my own experience on Cats.

We’ve only had Motor Yachts. I couldn’t imagine being healed over in a monohull while sailing, and/or rolling at anchor all day & night while listening to the rigging clanking & rattling. Plus I enjoy 20 plus knots to get while the getting is good...But hey that’s just me
Great Video as Always, and no fists were flying...😂😂😂

One thing that SV Delos found with their series on Cat vs Mono was the Cat sailors say you have to de-tune the sails a bit to keep the stresses down on a cat. With a mono it automatically spills wind by healing. The cat won't do that so the shrouds take on a lot more stress. This sounds like a wise discovery and ultimately it means the potential speed gap between a cat and a mono is less.

A conversation on which sailboat is best , Catamaran or Monohull , for that long and not turning into at least one call for a " Man overboard " is simply amazing ! Shows Sailors do have more fun ! I think for the question for survival is that a mono in a really bad storm , can flip all the way around and up again , were as a cat flips , and it is just holding on praying for help to arrive . Although very rare , thank God ! There was a movie about this in 2015 called "Abandoned " which took place near New Zealand . Your video was Great on a never ending subject !

It seems the comparison is always being made with both types being similarly sized....not fair. Of course a 43 Cat is superior to a 40 Mono except in deep water gale conditions. The comparison I would make is between a 40- 45 Cat and a 55-65 Mono. I think the " at anchor" space and comfort is similar in that context. As far as at sail? It depends on the type of motion you prefer. Regardless..nice video as usual by both couples and a interesting subject.

Nice to see you 4 crazy kids together. Good personalities on one boat. When I took ASA 106 one of the guys in my class said "there are plenty of boats to dream about but choosing one will get you out there before dreaming about the perfect boat, there are plenty of hunters all over the world, what does that tell you"... this was after a conversation about how hunters are pretty but we all feel like we wouldn't go off shore in one. We were on an Island Packet 40... that think was like driving an Abrams and we were in a gail for 3 days... It was crazy! But that was pretty good advice I think.
As for the storm... It was Wild and I was lucky to be part of the group. The school said they felt like we were about the best students they have so they didn't ground us. We set sail and all hell broke loose as we sailed out of the Chesapeake.

. Thanks for posting these, I loved sailingrowing up, but have been chained to the land because of employment. But it's time to start shopping. Thanks!
. How bad is the pollution around Oz/micronesia? The scientific journals paint a dourer picture. Is it bad from your perspective?

so buy a Monohull if you want to sail and be safe(r) in rough weather, big waves and strong winds and buy a Catamaran when you are more planning of living in a huge area in the tropics and pray there is no hurricane?
Cats have for sure more space but no, i just dont trust them on long hauls enough... thing is I actually never see a cat in the the North Sea or the Baltic sea but a lot here in Asia.
    Stay safe

im sorry you don't feel they are very stable. We feel they are very stable. The reason you don't see cats in the north sea orr baltic is because the marinas are not meant for cats. we have sailed over 10000nm in rough weather and big seas and run from hurricanes. Enjoy your monohull x

This was very well done. Thank you. I hope in Part 2 that you cover the differences in pointing between a cat with low fixed keels (like yours) and a cat with deep daggerboards or centerboards vs a mono.
