    I can tell you from experience with multiple concussions that everything he talks about is true. It’s been years since my last one and I still have lingering side effects from them. It’s scary and something that is not easy for someone personally to talk about at the time it’s going on. I can truthfully say that Dale is a big reason I quit football after my concussions. He had his in 2012 the same time I had my first one and I think that for me in that time of my life where football meant everything, rest of the world be damned it really opened my eyes to how serious it is. If my hero can be sidelined, understand the problems and know that he can’t do his sport then why would I? I can honestly say that I think Dale probably stopped me from screwing up my brain more than I already have and I hope that one day I can let him know that.

      Yes! When I got my last one I lost motor control. Couldn't walk or talk. Had memory lapses. And that was a relatively minor concussion. So glad Dale was man enough to walk away and not become a dead hero.

    It's pretty obvious to me that he has PTSD after his description of just watching the cars go by. I'm someone dealing with PTSD, anxiety, and depression from my military experience and I have to say, he sounds on par with what I deal with. Mental health is something I avoided for years, because as a man it's extremely difficult to admit any type of weakness. I'm now 36 and it took me 12 years after getting out of the military to admit my problems, it's cost me so much. I cannot stress this enough, if you are feeling depressed or you are having major anxiety, seek help.

    • @indycustommade3568

    As a lifelong racer and idiot show-off I have and many I have known suffered countless concussions. The future isn't necessarily bright. At 57 I am starting to feel the effects. I met Dale Jr. at Fast Trac driving school at Charlotte. He talked with each person that drove that day personally at dinner. I personally asked him about how crash avoidance effected his racing. He told me he waded up a hundred cars and never gave it a thought. He's thinking about it now. Love you Junior. Glad you stopped.

    What truly scares me is my daughter who is 10 now has had 3 documented concussions by the age of 9 (last one within days of her turning 9). First was falling the the shower and hitting her head on the tub, second was banging heads in PE in school, and the last was a car wreck, us getting rear ended. What is known today in that each successive concussion makes the next one that much easier and the symptoms that much worse. Yeah as a parent I worry about it.

    A good functional neurologist can really help and locate where the concussion damage is. They can also help your brain get stronger and rebuild. There are brain exercises you should be doing to rebuild your brain. Probably very difficult at first, but over time you should see improvement.

    Nascar is going to go through it’s own concussion issues similar to the NFL. Drivers are going to start getting together and suing and hopefully making enough noise to make positive changes that will help everyone active drivers retired drivers and those making their way into the sport in the future.

    I've had 2 confirmed concussions and maybe more. I had 1 that was really bad, brain bleeds in multiple spots, etc. Everything Dale says makes sense. The brain needs extreme patience when it is healing and in NASCAR, we need to see that more. I'm also worried that with the HANs device locking the neck in place, it makes concussions more likely as the spine isn't as mobile as it could be.

    When this topic comes up I think of two NFL players that gave the game their all. Jim McMann and Jr Seau are who I always think about. I’m so glad Jim didn’t commit suicide though he had suicidal thoughts. Jr Seau did kill himself. When I heard of his suicide it was heart breaking to me. His poor family was devastated. Both of their marriages failed because of the anger and personality changes that they nor their wives knew this was because they were suffering from severe brain damage. These men just changed and were no longer the loving husbands they had been. The wives needed to protect their children and themselves from this man they no longer knew.
    Both men at some point in time knew their brains were messed up. Jr Seau at only 43 shot himself in the chest and didn’t die immediately. There was a reason he wanted his head undamaged. Testing showed he had CTE. Dave Duerson who played for the Bears did the same thing. At 50 years old he shot himself in the chest requesting his brain be checked for CTE which tests showed he did have.
    NFL players with CTE in 2016 was 90 out of 94 tested. I’m so glad Jr stopped racing. I pray he doesn’t get symptoms again. Twenty to twenty five concussions is unbelievable. I’m glad he has medical care keeping an eye on him. Jim McMann has found some treatments that are helping him. Yes he most likely has CTE but he hasn’t given up on having quality of life for the rest of his life. Jr is a fighter. He loves his wife and daughter. I know he will do everything he can to enjoy his life with them.

    agree with JR. if a driver has a hard wreck it should be mandatory that they are fully gone over and a head CT. done. seems like the neurosurgeon is only there for looks so NASCAR can save it's own but in a law suit. and somewhere in the future there is a lawsuit coming just like football.

    He's exactly right, mentioning a bumped head and taking time off would kill your career, regardless of facts. The power of suggestion would cause others to think they are seeing something they are not. That, and people are not too aware of how susceptible to suggestion they are, how unable they are to control and understand why they think what they do. Clueless.

    This is my question , we see guys like Ricky Rudd , Cale Yarborough, Rusty Wallace , Ned Jarrett, Richard Petty , Harry Gant , Bobby Allison these guys took some serious serious licks and I'm not saying those guys may not have some issues themselves but it seems these younger guys are having a bigger problem with concussions, so why is that? What is different ? We have safe walls the cars and seats are supposed to be so much safer and obviously they are just looking at Ryan Newmans crash at Daytona if this happens 25 30 yrs ago the outcome may have been totally different . So this is where I'm leaning , I'm thinking the problem may lie in the head rest , these things are molded in the seat and I'm wondering how much give if any does it have? In a hard impact I'm wondering if the head rest stops the head too soon too fast and the brain ends up absorbing most of the impact. Where in the past they didnt even have a head rest but those guys by all accounts have never really publicly came out and said to what extent they may suffer from this or if any .

    • @pat36a
      @pat36a 3 года назад

      Simple, the cars of the past would crumple absorbing energy. Speeds were also lower. Cars 10 yrs. ago wear built Not to flex, front and rear area were strengthened for the bump draft. The car couldn't absorb and disperse the energy from a wreck, so the drivers body took it.

  • @galehess6676
    @galehess6676 5 лет назад

    This guy and probably a lot of other drivers would be better racers with a good therapist who understands the mind/body connection of how the muscles and nerves store experiences (This is new school therapy, not some old misguided psych stuff), and that's not a judgement, just the real deal. If you are going to have instant reflexes, you gotta be loose, the tension that comes after trauma hurts that ability. Anyone who's been through trauma would need a good therapist (Trauma, as in hard wrecks, life-threatening crashes, seeing your Dad killed....) There's a lot of new accepted research showing that the body, the muscles hold our mental health so to speak, and this isn't quack talk, it will get into sports psychology more and more over time, it's facts, fact based, based on unequivocal social research results unquestioned by any professionals, unlike global warming where there is room for discussion.

      Also what he said about NASCAR protecting drivers from themselves... The changes in the last year or so are amazing. Back then the only time you went to the care center (which then was staffed by whatever local doctors that were willing to come aboard, not knowing anything about the individual drivers) was when you wrecked and couldn’t drive it back to the garage. How many times did Jr wreck, or numerous others, and drive it back and go home with an undiagnosed concussion? More than anyone wants to admit.

    Somebody said you can tell it's hard for him to talk about certain things and I can definitely see why it would be especially to the public when you are known as a nice and decent person and you have that kind of persona and all the sudden your attitude and temperament changes and at the beginning you don't really know why and at the same time causing depression which could possibly lead 2 different addictions to say drugs and alcohol maybe even gambling I'm just throwing gambling in there I don't know his circumstances he does say he had like a bad temper and attitude and didn't know why all that can cause people to turn their back on you and they don't even know why you're acting the way you are and you don't know why you are either in the beginning again that can cause some serious depression and anxiety all of the above so then you start drinking and drugging trying to get that feeling to go away then you become an addict not that he did for me I did so now you're all alone nobody wants to be around you I can definitely relay in some ways to that so like I said depression anxiety can cause addiction then you also have a fact that depression anxiety is a leading Factor in the suicide rates that's really a no-brainer and that is sad so you know Dale is really lucky that he found the courage to eventually tell somebody and talk about it it was hard for me to talk about being a heroin addict sitting there shooting shit in my arms doing every drug and get my hand on and try to hide that for many years and people like us get very good at pretending everything's hunky-dory when it's not so there you sit in a room with a bunch of people who have no clue what's going on inside of your head that's why it's so important to talk about addiction when you're an addict it can be the very thing that will save your life I sit in groups and meetings sometimes every day at least once a day and notice so many people don't say a word they just sit there or if we're going around in a circle asking 4 then to share they'll pass all that does is prolong everything but when you don't know or you are not educated on it to certain extent that's when people hopefully we'll Reach Out to a person especially someone is going through the same thing or had went through the same thing they'll notice their signs are all the same as yours that's why I in my opinion just my opinion only I tried to tell people when I notice them I try to encourage for them to at least say their first name with addiction I also try to get them to just say how many days they've been sober I don't like to push the issue too much because we can run people who need help off Buy bean a little too pushy and when it's all new to them it's so important that you do not run those people off it's life or death for them I've got six and a half years and it's still hard and it's still life or death for me as well I'm no better than that new guy sitting there who doesn't want to speak you may feel embarrassed if there's anybody reading if that's dealing with not wanting to share what's going on I want you to know that people care and when people care don't be afraid to share think of it as a dare LOL sometimes that's how I'll encourage myself to step it up and speak more about what's going on in my life and when others speak about what's going on in their life I don't try to give them advice I do try to help them if I can in some way but again if you are reading this and dealing with something like this don't be afraid your life is at steak I'm just because things may seem bad at that particular moment that don't necessarily you know it's going to be that way forever There's Hope as long as I stay away from that dope LOL don't mean to make it rhyme just coming out that way so again speak up and ask for help most people at meetings or group dealing with specific things like this they want to do anything they can most of the time most of them can guide you towards A New Path and boy you'll start to feel free and some sort of relief guarantee you the first time you speak up even if it's just your name you will feel different in a good way and all it took was just for you to say my name is George nice to meet you all pass before you no it you'll be that guy wanting thriving to do anything and everything you can to help the new guy or girl sometimes I feel like I get more out of it then they do think about that I mean really so to all you out there going through similar situations I love all you people I wish you all the best of luck this may not make any sense at all but I'm trying I hope it does and I hope it relates to the topic of the vid with Dale I put all of it in the same kind of basket usually something happens in our lives that causes these issues for their head and brain trauma or relationships or just life in general beat beating you up on a regular the world we live in today is sad it's hard it's hard just to make sure you eat and have a place to sleep that can make people make bad choices as well anybody out there dealing with brain trauma if what I am saying makes any sense to you whatsoever stay strong and don't let something you do not have control over at the moment create more problems in your life such as addiction from being depressed we're having a bad childhood 4 anything like that man if you have faith in God say a prayer don't have to be long just a quick one for Dale and his family and others out there dealing with this kind of stuff I believe it works I'm not trying to push my religion on any anybody or any 4 that matter I only know what I believe works for me I also have a lot of faith not everybody does especially when you've been down the road that some of us have traveled but for me my situation it's better today cuz I open my mouth and it said hello my name is Dustin that one little thing changed my life and it gets better may take time so be patient sometimes good things may take a minute before they happen so don't give up that miracle that thing you need could be right around the corner so thanks and much love to all y'all and let's keep Dale and his family in our I think what would really help Jr is to reach out to his heavenly Father. I think the best anxiety killer out there is Psalms 23 .

    Why would you hide them that much is my question? Not worth it. I mean he is lucky he never got CTE. Smart to retire before he got permanent brain damage.

    I'm worried for him. He looks like he could end up another suicide. You can see the panic in his eyes. He seems off in this whole interview.

    Boy, imagine that, guys driving 200 mph and crashing in cars have concussions. Who knew? It's like the football thing, violent sports cause injury. this is common sense.
    Think about any job, you're gonna get some type of injuries if you do it long enough. Imagine how a mover's back feels after 25 years. Imagine how a mason's hands feel. Imagine how a foundry worker's lungs feel..
    This dude is rich, he made the choices even after seeing his father die on the track. Regular joes aren't rich and they got all kinds of issues. Rich folks need to stop playing the victim, its ugly.

      Actually, you'd be surprised at how common (and incredibly dangerous) brain injuries are among "regular people" - hopefully, the rest of us can see past stars' professions (and wealth) and learn from people like JR and his insightful candor

      Wrecking in a race car is not fun they are not playing victim people can get injured

      Athletes compete because of more than money. And the thing is his injuries didnt just hit once the wreck happened it was days after. How many football players or regular people have those symptoms and think nothing of it?

      @@1320crusier you are so right. It's not at all just an issue for athletes
