    In regards to Al Unser, Jr...I will agree with Mike and Dale...he is a great guy. I met him back in the late 80s in Michigan while he was there for the CART race. I recognized him when he pulled up to the dairy bar (ice cream stand) on US-12 and got out of the car. He was with a few other people. I went up and introduced myself, shook hands with him (big guy) and chatted for a few. He was so cool. He was racing for Shierson (Adrian, MI) at the time and was my favorite Indy driver. Awesome experience. I was also attending the race that weekend.

    Let me tell you about Mike Skinner. Louisville motor speedway had a race many years ago with Cale Yarborough, Mike Skinner and I think Buddy Baker. They rented three of the late model race cars and Mike Skinner ended up with the blue number 54 late model. Mike got the slowest of all of the cars. The blue 54 was always at the tail end of the race. Mike took the car out to test and brought it back in and had them make several changes. Mike was like a lightning bolt on the green flag. After just two laps they called a “phantom caution “to bring them all back together. Mike was half a lap a head after only two laps. Of course Mike won the race. What was so surprising to me was how short Mike was lol when he got out of the car I was standing right there in the pits by the car. I was taller than him lol he is still one of my favorite all-time racecar drivers.

    Dale Earnhardt had so many horrific crashes during his career yet never let off the gas pedal. His son had a few crashes and he suffered from concussions where he decided it was best for him to retire. That was a good decision for him and his family. You just couldn't stop ole IRONHEAD!

    • @badbooking3221
      @badbooking3221 3 года назад +3

      Dale Sr. had some really bad years in the latter half of the 90s (by his standards anyhow) because of his unwillingness to take a week or two off. Broke his neck at Michigan in 1995, had the injuries at Talladega in 1996, had a blackout spell at Darlington in 1997, suffered numerous injuries in the spring of 1998 (between burns and bruises from 3 hard crashes), and then in 1999 he broke his neck again in the wreck at Atlanta. So when I hear someone calling Denny Hamlin a wuss for taking himself out to allow himself to heal and/or not feeling well, all I can think is that Denny is protecting his investment (i.e: himself) in a way that can ensure success down the road.

      My favorite driver back in the day is/was/always-will-be Dale Jarrett. That man suffered injuries left and right, hell he broke his kneecap at Pocono in 1996 in a fashion that should have derailed his title bid. As he got older, and I point to 2001, he suffered some hard wrecks and got injuries that I believe it took him a while to overcome. Ricky Rudd is the exact same in that sense, got injured a bit and never took a week off to let himself heal.

    I will always have an appreciation for Mike Skinner. Dale never wanted a teammate so they never really worked with each other. But with them being on the same page going into 2001 makes it even more tragic. Being asked by Mr Childress to check on Dale and be the one to inform his boss how bad it looked must've been terrible. But even with that he was still competitive in trucks and was trusted to be good enough to evaluate young teams and run their equipment to get them up to par. I think Skinner was better than his stats show. Dude just had some terrible luck.

    Don’t get me wrong , Skinner could do it but not to the level of knocking off consistent W’s in The Cup
    He was good all the way up to trucks , which is darn good so I’m not hating, I’m just stating the fact that kid better appreciate the equipment he’s getting from an NASCAT Veteran who’s a legend in the sport.

      Ah yes! The days of Skinner, Dennis Setzer and others at Caraway Speedway! I remember well one night when Setzer and Skinner went after each in the pits after the feature! Before it was over, I think everyone in the pits was involved in that fight! Setzer’s “Orange Blossom Special” was always a fan favorite!

      Thomas AKA TommyOso Greg Marlow, Stephen Grimes, Herbie Poole! Arguably the best years in Caraways history! Skinner was around long before he went big time, but he made a name for hisself while he was racing at Caraway! Hard to believe now, but back in those days there would be so many Late Models on Saturday night that some wouldn’t make the cut and go home! That doesn’t happen any more!

    I think the majority of drivers retire with some mental injuries. I think guys are retiring earlier cuz they have more resources now and they know what's wrong with them. These cars now are so much safer than they used to be but they're still race cars at the end of the day

    @Dale Jr. race conservatively look up Carol Shelby. He had focusing disorders and heart issues yet still raced. He raced conservatively and had the mind set of “I have to stay alive for my wife (and kids).” If you race with that mindset I think you could do it. Don’t say you can’t do it. However I respect your decisions and am no way asking you to risk your life.
