Vlog Ep.53 - Big Algonquin Canoe Trip - Day 7 - Bring It On Home! (4K) This video is about the 7th day of our canoe camping trip in Algonquin Park's interior, where we canoe and portage our way from Happy Isle Lake back to where we started the trip on Lake Opeongo! Thanks for coming along with us! We've also been filming select, interesting moments throughout each day of the trip with a 360° 4K VR camera (there’s a link to today’s 360° video below), and today's clips are moments from our morning breakfast at our campsite on Happy Isle Lake, followed by some canoe paddling on Lake Opeongo as we wrap-up the trip! After the trip, we'll also post an unabridged version of all the 360° clips for those who would like to enjoy a longer VR experience in the park :)
__
There are several different ways to enjoy the 360° VR video linked below:
1. Select desktop web browsers like Google's Chrome, or Firefox will allow you to scroll through the 360° VR video by clicking / dragging the image on the screen left, right, up and down, so you can look around in the environment.
2. View the 360° VR video on your smartphone or tablet using RUclips's Mobile app (a free app on iOS or Android devices), which will allow you to pan and tilt your phone around in 3D space, almost as if it's a window in front of you that you can look through to see the VR environment around you - the RUclips Mobile app uses your device's internal gyroscopes to determine where you're looking... which is really cool!
3. View the 360° VR video through Google's Cardboard app (a free app on iOS and Android devices), and a relatively inexpensive head-mounted VR viewer, equipped with lenses designed to help you focus on your smartphone's screen. The app creates a stereoscopic version of the 360° video we filmed, which you can then put into a head-mounted VR viewer, which allows you to look around and almost feel like you're there inside the VR environment. The app uses your phone's own internal gyroscopes to determine where you're looking. Please note, your VR experience with this method depends on your phone's resolution and the quality of the VR headset you purchase. I personally own a "Merge 360°" VR headset which works with a range of different phones, and sells online at B&H Photo for around $79 CDN / $59 US, though you can find inexpensive VR viewers for as little as $15 - $20 by searching online. There are many to choose from - you generally get what you pay for though, and more expensive models will typically be more comfortable to wear for extended periods, or come equipped with more built-in adjustments for precisely aligning with your eye. Before buying any VR viewer, please ensure it will fit your phone. You may also want to enjoy this method while wearing stereo headphones.
4. View the 360° VR video through an Oculus Rift, or HTC Vive, which are much more expensive VR devices with their own software built-in.
Today's shots are of us paddling our canoe through the wind and waves on Lake Opeongo as we make our way home! Before you check it out, please don't forget to like, share or comment on today's vlog and let us know what you think! Thanks! It really helps us to create more content and moments like this :) ...today's 360° VR video link: • BIG ALGONQUIN CANOE TR...

P.S. Thanks for watching! :) xx
We (both just shy of 70) visited Ontario (and Canada) for the first time this September. We were determined to spend three complete days in Algonquin Park and to canoe and portage, also for the first time. We managed 1.2k on the longest. Now we've watched this trip of yours, we're coming back. You set a very high standard. Thank you for sharing it. As you say over there: 'Awesome!' We find the creeks the most fun, hauling over beaver dams and fallen log weirs.
So glad to hear Christina! Thanks for watching :)
Hi everyone! If you enjoyed following along and watching the trip, please consider sharing the trip's playlist link goo.gl/FThGXh with friends & family online - it's a great way to help support our channel and future trips! Also, we're going to film a Q&A soon, so we're collecting questions now via twitter using the hashtag #askjuliachris if you have anything that you'd like to have answered in the video. Hope everyone's having a great weekend, and thanks for watching - we've got some exciting new adventures coming up soon!! :)
Chris Prouse This was awesome! I so look forward to your videos, I’m sharing the whole playlist on Facebook now. How do you film when you are behind Julia and walking? Are you using a go pro or your DSLR? Xoxo
Thanks so much Dan! :)
Thanks so much Jai! I'm actually just holding the gimbal upside down and pointing it behind me :)
Julia & Chris - you are the best canadian 🍁 girls ! 🌺🐰
Hi with Etobicoke!!! 🍁

Such a great trip and as always, some of the best video production on RUclips.
Thanks Shawn! That means a lot - love your channel, and that cabin's coming together beautifully! Keep up the great work :)
Agreed!!!
I second that!
You guys should do a Joe, Shawn, Chris, Julia trip. Would be a classic video. For fun don’t forget Doug.
My daughter (4yrs old in 2 weeks) loves your videos. We watch one video before bed every night after her bedtime story. That's our routine now. Thanks for inspiring her! She just talks about camping now. Her favourite part is Julia's s'mores :)
+christopher chung Aww! We’re so glad to hear! Please tell your daughter that Julia and I say hi, and we wish her all the best on her future camping adventures! We have some fun new outdoor adventures coming up in a little bit that we can’t wait to share :)
Chris Prouse :) we'll be looking forward to the future videos! Keep them coming.
Just sitting in my backyard with a campfire watching your videos and planning a canoe trip .
Nice! Sounds like a great way to spend the evening - love planning routes in the park :)
I watched all the videos from this trip now. So relaxing on a cold winters nights. Sit back and watch the fun you guys had. Love Julia's kitchen! It all looks soooo good!
Really enjoyable series. Channels like yours is why I watch far more RUclips content than I do TV nowadays.

The quality of your videos are unmatched!...but the passion you girls have for the outdoors and each other is the main reason your channel is about to explode! I rate your channel right up there with Joe Robinet & Shawn James. Keep up the fantastic work girls.
+TheOgieone Aww! Thanks so much! That means a lot to us :)
Congrats on hitting 12k subscribers! Your videos remind me how great it is to be outdoors, rain or shine.

Awesome; I am holding you to it LOL. Peace and love to you both!
All of your work is incredibly well prepared and edited.
You guys are so impressive especially the ease with which you flip that canoe on your shoulders and walk off. Love your videos, great work!
Hello Ladies, I love watching your videos. The sound of nature. Seeing two people get along so very well. Everything is a lot of work, but you gals make it all look easy. Most importantly, you all know how to do stuff. Period. Chris, your voice is relaxing, soothing, and reassuring. I love Julia's sense of humor. Honestly? You two, put together, are magic. Please continue with this stuff, you have found a place to be. Very high quality stuff. Thank you! Randy
You two are the BEST!! Continued success and see you next trip!!
Page shared!!
Thanks so much Ed! :)
I must thank you for sharing your adventures, I had a smile on my face throughout all seven episodes. Friends and I have been paddling Algonquin Park's lakes and rivers since the very early '80s and your videos bring back lots of memories. Chris and Julia, you are amazing women and great examples of how to canoe trip wisely and safely. I hope our paths cross in the park one day. If you happen to see three traditional canvas cedar canoes pulled up on shore and accompanied by three old codgers, come on in for a tea and chat. Algonquin Park has changed a lot over the years, not all for the better, in this old tripper's view, but it still my favourite place to dip a paddle. I do hope I can run the Pettawawa from Lake Traverse to Lake McManus once more before I'm too old. The campsite at the gorge after the Natch is breath taking! Keep up the great work, I'm looking forward to seeing your next adventure.
Aww! Thanks so much Tim - will do! :)
I enjoyed this series immensely, good job.
Love your videos! Thanks again... can't wait to see where life will take you next. 😊 Rob
Thanks Rob! We've got a fun new outdoor adventure coming up in a little bit! :)
Great trip ladies. I hope it was as much fun as it looked to be. I'm really looking forward to this years adventures.
Awesome series again! Looking forward to the next one!
Thanks David! :)
Hot chocolate in thermos would help a lot on the portage trails, Moreno wool socks & cap for the sleeping bag will keep you warm. Rough going on slippery trails, you Gals made it look easy.
Another great trip! Love it , love it, Loved it!
Another awesome trip. I enjoyed watching. Thank you for sharing. All the best to both of you.
Thanks so much! :)
CP has the sickest shades! Well done ladies! Great trip 🙂
Great series Chris and Julia!
Thanks Pat! :)
Awesome series, I’ve enjoyed every minute, also it has inspired me to start saving for my own canoe so me and the kids can get out and paddle some rivers near us, and maybe the odd overnight camp.👍👍👍😎😎
Thanks Martin! So glad to hear! :)
Thank you for the opportunity to ask you two questions about your experiences in the park. Not entirely sure where to start, I have watched your vid on what to take ,how to pack etc but, I wondered about where to go. With a couple going on their first trip together, one with camping ,canoeing and outdoor experience and one with out ,wanting to have a few days in the park, getting away from the crowds, yet not an epic physical trip. Park access point, direction to head, what lakes etc?? I have gone in at Achray and Brent however it was with a bunch of guys experienced , fit and a lot younger than today, lol 😜😜. We have birding adventures planned for the future, so I want to get some trial trips in, pick some routes based on birding habitat, Warblers mostly, love the Warblers. Thank you for your time, Much appreciate. 🇨🇦🇨🇦👍👍👍😊 PS. Video editing is my next topic for you, steady as it goes building our RUclips channel , Bob V
Thanks Bob! We'll answer that in a little more detail in the upcoming video! :)
Chris Prouse beautiful, thank you.
You two gals have a neat show, I really like it. 🛶🌲😊
looking back at this in December makes me want it to be summer
Epic journey and great video. Cheers
Thanks Joe! :)
Really well done. I enjoyed your mix of shots, and editing. I've been addicted to a lot of videos of people's camping trips lately, and you both put a lot of hard work into making this better than the norm. Thanks for going that extra mile so we can all enjoy from our arm chairs. ... I hope there is a new 2018 Algonquin series coming. :)
Amazing videos. You two are awesome. I’d go to a theatre to watch you videos!
Aww! Thanks so much Sue! :)

H3 will come at 2018
Recently there will be other models more suitable, I think it is more suitable for your travel video. :)
Cool! Keep up the great work, and let me know if you'd like to have it reviewed! :)

Thanks Todd! Glad to hear :)
Im too busy to watch the video right now .. So I'll like it now and watch it later. Only because it's easy to like your videos even before seeing them .
Aww! Thanks so much! :)
We did our second trip to Algonquin last weekend to celebrate our ten year wedding anniversary. Our first trip was a single night out and back to check out drive times etc. (we are in Buffalo NY). Our multi day outing last week was wonderful with a mix of exciting and beautiful weather plus awesome fall colors. Your videos are motivational, inspiring, and educational in addition to being beautiful. The videos are the reason we have made four trips to Canada with our canoe (2x Quebec + the Algonquin trips) this year and are setting the plans for 2018. Thank you for sharing your adventures with us! We hope to cross paths with you and Julia someday in the park.
So glad to hear Phil! That's wonderful! Congrats on the ten years, and I hope you have some great trips in 2018! :)
Started the first one from recommended videos and ended up watching them all. Excellent series! It reminds me of trips through Quetico a few years back.
Bravo you guys very nice trip and videos 👍cool
Hi Chris: I continue to be impressed by the accomplishments of you two. I know that my days of a portage like that are well over & I've learned to have no regrets only appreciate your work. Thanks Brian 77
Thanks for your kind words Brian! I keep thinking about how fortunate we are to be able to experience it, and I'm sure you feel the same way about that place - you've probably got some great stories to tell! Always love to hear a great story if you have any to share :)
Thanks Chris (and Julia), another great trip .....can't wait for the next one!
Thanks Andrew! We've got another fun outdoor adventure coming up soon! :)
Nice work. I plan to binge watch all episodes during the upcoming holidays. keep on.
Your vids brighten up my day ! Love watching you two!
Would you ever consider leading a group out canoeing ?
Impressive as always!
Thanks Alexander! :)
You 2 Rock´s great trip...:-)
Thanks Frank! :)

+楊木易 Thank you! :)
This was absolutely beautiful... I love the way you brought this little series to an end. (The ponytail look was very cool too, BTW!) I can't wait until your next series.... ❤️
Aww! Thanks so much! We've got a fun new outdoor adventure coming up in a little bit! :)
That was a great finish to a great trip. It's always nice to show that it is possible to paddle Opeongo (at least, on some days).
As I said in my last comment on Day 6, you guys are definitely 'smoothing it' and making it look fun and easy. I do have a couple of tips or suggestions for you, though:
Both are related to the food barrel. First is the way you position it in the canoe. Once it is mostly empty, it matters less. But early on, when it is full and heavy, having it upright is going to shift the center of gravity of your canoe a little higher. I dunno if it is enough to matter, but in general the lower you can position things, the more stable the canoe is going to be. So, in the first half of a long trip, when that barrel is still full, it might be a good idea to lay it on its side. I know it is a pain to put it in and take it out that way, but it might save you from dumping on some future occasion.
Second, with respect to hanging the barrel: You guys obviously had no trouble with what you did. But the reality is that if you did get any critters who could smell the food in it and were determined to take a crack at it, having it positioned as you did is not going to help much. To thwart a determined bear, the barrel has to be much further from the trunk of the tree ... they can climb, after all. The same goes for the smaller nuisances like raccoons, squirrels, and chipmunks. If the barrel is right next to the trunk, access for them is no problem. So, if you are going to go to the trouble to hang it, it should be off of a sturdy branch and well away from the trunk.
I am looking forward to the Q&A and your next adventures!
Thank you! You're entirely right on both points - we get the comment about the barrel a lot... though we're frequently in & out of the barrel for camera equipment a lot, and to keep snacking on the go when we're tight for time (because I film too much sometimes, lol) so it's just more practical for us to leave it upright. Most of the heavy stuff is at the bottom of it, and the other (heavier) canvas backpack in the bottom of the boat offsets it quite a bit. I come from a competitive rowing background too where the racing shells are much more tippy, so the canoe feels like a barge in comparison. At the time when we put the bear hang up the previous night, we were dealing with mild hypothermia from being out in the cold wind and rain all day... our primary concern was to start warming up asap, and there just weren't many options unfortunately.
fantastic, i'll share as much as possible,, looking forward to the Q&A, mostly about video editing though HA! :0) great job again with the entire trip and video series. We look forward to future adventures.,, Bob,
Thanks so much Bob - we really appreciate it! I forgot to mention, the Q&A is going to be part of a recorded video (ie, not live), so please feel free to ask any questions you'd like to have answered for the video now if you wish :)
Great ending to an awesome week in the woods. Sad that we ahead to wait another year for your next long canoe trip ladies. Beautiful country up there!!!

I can always come back to these videos to lighten up my day. ^_^
Great footage ....

What a wonderful trip!
Well Don. Hard work i see. Nice video.
Thanks Jørgen! :)
Love the video. I would love to do canoe trip in Algonquin
Glad to hear - you should go for it! :)
Great video series! I really look forward to the Algonquin Camping/Canoeing and the photography/editing quality. Just a word of concern: Please be careful on the water - no schedule is worth your life (very much relieved to see the life jackets). Day 6 conditions were pretty bad. When I was younger I made a similar call to go out on the lake and later realized it was the wrong call (actually I figured it out halfway across the lake). You need experience to make the right decisions and usually, you get experience by making bad decisions. I really enjoy your videos nonetheless. Great work.
Great videos, your trips inspired us (family including 2 under 12s) to canoe. We recommend launching from Kiosk.. and making it to Gouinlock Lake (v peaceful despite Jeffs map notes saying risk of generator noise).
Such a great way to lift my spirits on this rainy windy day! Always look forward to your videos Chris.
Glad to hear Larry! Hope you're having a great fall season :)
A documentary full of adventure. Thank you for sharing Chris...
Thanks for watching Bera! :)
Wonderful video!

well chris ... i just can not believe it that you made it safe ...and me i though the canoe it was yours but soon i seen that end of this video it was a rental ...but i was amage that both of you longest portage the one she fell .. i was worry but thank god she is ok .. both of you are so strong very good shape to carry all that in 1 shot .. i m so proud of both you ...but me i think i love you both ..but oh well i guess i m to old lol ... anyway wtg ladies .. you did very awesome video ..take care and i hope you make more video in 2018 this year ...
Great job!
Excellent series Chris and Julia. Your hard work is appreciated :) Looking forward to your next adventure series. Maybe do a west-east Algonquin canoe trip for your next Algonquin series, similar to what Joe Robinet and Doug Outside did a few weeks ago 🤔
Thanks Manuel! We actually crossed the park from west to east a few years ago, over 8 days ( you can find our route here on Instagram: instagram.com/p/BIrPmT8hgZR ). We had a blast, and I'd love to do it again! :)
Amazing im watching from jordan
Once again another awesome video! So sad to see this series come to an end... I guess this means we have to wait until next year for another series eh? 😰
Thanks Brooke - we've got a fun new adventure coming up soon! :)

+Aubrey Maxam Thanks for watching Aubrey! We’ve got an exciting new adventure coming up in a little bit! :)
I'm your fan forever! Love your videos. Look forward to them!
Well ! I just found the time to watch your video , With out a doubt this has the one of the nicest feel good videos that you two have put out . Thanks again for sharing , and I just realized at the end of your video that it was the last in a series of 7 . Well I'm off on another 3 hour bike ride so when I get back home I'll be watching this series from the beginning.
Thank you so much! Hope you have a great ride! :)
Chris Prouse Thank you , I just made it home through quite a windy and wet storm , I lost 18 out of my 27 gears along the way but the wind at my back made it quite easy . Ok ! Now off I go to watch the first video in the series.
Nice - sounds like an awesome ride! Hope you enjoy watching them! :)
I just stumbled upon your channel and watched this series. You are quit a good filmmaker. Thank you for sharing a little of you life.
Thank you! Btw, your channel's really cool! :)
Thanks, I'm in the process of shifting the focus of the channel. I want to help creators understand how to best support their creativity. Our brains are amazing but we can be our own worst enemies when it comes to creating our best art.
GREAT video, as always. Enjoy your trips and stories. Love Opeongo, do a solo there every fall. Nice to see PFD's on. Ted B
Thanks Ted! Phenomenal lake with lots to explore - I can definitely see why you'd want to keep revisiting it :)
Chris, great stuff sincerely.
Thank Mark! You've got a great channel too - just subscribed for more! :)
Great series, enjoyed very much. Are you going to do any winter camping?
Thanks Andy! Yep - we hope to do a few! :)
Oh goody :) :) :)
Thanks for watching! :)
Finally, been eagerly awaiting this one. Great series
Thanks for watching! We've got a cool new outdoor adventure coming up in a little bit :)
Look forward to seeing it
Wow, this video is so smooth! What camera/tools do you use?
Thanks Sukma! This was filmed with a GX85 on a PilotFly H2 3-axis gimbal :)
Awesome finale Chris!
+Magnus Persson Thanks so much Magnus! Hope all’s well in Sweden :)
Sure is! The autumn wind, rain and frosty mornings is upon us now. ;-) Will be start doing backpacking stuff this winter, a bit excited over that. Hope all is well in Canada!
Great video! Do those sea/float planes belong to the park? I remember getting a photo of one landing near our campsite on a disposable camera about 15 years ago!
Thanks Brian! Yep! Nice - yeah, I keep wishing they'd land nearby, or do a fly-over while we're canoeing :)
Great video and music selection! Do you use a GoPro?
Thanks Billy! :) I used a GoPro for a little bit during some of the rain on day 6 of the trip ( ruclips.net/video/CvgrO5rBCaA/видео.html ), though the majority of these videos are filmed with a Panasonic GX85 on a PilotFly H2 gimbal. If you'd like to know more about my filming rig, I talk more about it in this video: ruclips.net/video/elxpysuSnWo/видео.html
Awesome trip ladies!! Enjoyed the whole series. When are you guys going to visit my neck of the woods, North and canoe the many lakes of the beautiful Killarney? Thanks, Doug
+Pinetree Line Outdoors Thanks Doug! Killarney is actually high on the list of places to explore - the views look amazing! :)
Chris Prouse Awesome!! You guys will not be disappointed. With your cinematic skills you can present like no one has. Thanks!!
Excellent trip Julia and Chris! We did a similar loop a few years back, but we went through Big Trout to get from La Muir to Happy Isle. Its more distance but you avoid those unmaintained portages, plus Big Trout... I just posted the first part of my Algonquin trip from this year. Its taken me a while to post, but the rest should be up soon. I'd love it if you check it out. Cheers, all the best!
Thanks Ian! I just checked out your video - fantastic work - really enjoyed it! Looking forward to part 2 :)
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
💞👍😊
Thanks Péter! :)
