Every time I saw Magcargo on the leaderboard, I’ve been wanting to watch this playthrough and my goodness this was brutal. Cheers to your resolve for seeing this through. The wall at Claire was painful as a viewer, so I cannot even imagine how it felt as the player. Also, that was a very unique final moveset strategy that played out impressively well. Phenomenal video, Squidgy!
Magcargo is so close to being a good pokemon, that speed Stat and typing is really going against it. Good job enduring this playthrough for our enjoyment :)
@@Squidgy they could have gave it attack too that way when it uses a non fire move It actually deals damage Mostly so normal n rock moves are good with magcargo Hp would have been great to take advantage of good defenses

Gary the underdog, first in all our hearts. Also I love that your runs include evolution. They're so much fun to watch. Congrats on the growth of this channel so far.
Gary and I had our differences at the start of the run, but by the end, I was rooting for that little snail! Unless it's a special evolution - like a Trade or a split Evo, I'll always start with the base form!
Magcargo was a toughie, but I'm proud of the little snail - it covercame a lot of hurdles but actually got the job done, which is something I didn't think would happen when I first started!

Mags isn't so awful. Needs a Quick Claw maybe. Probably. Sacrificing other stat boosts, but definitely helps. I'm surprised Rain Dance doesn't faint it though.
Clair was nail biting! You really had us on the edge of our seat! I really think the physical and special defense on Macargo should be evened out and it should have lower attack and higher special attack! When have you ever been attacked by a snail in real life! I also think it should have its own ability like flame body but instead called lava body where it takes less damage from super effective moves(water evaporates and you don’t wanna touch it) and maybe 50 percent chance to burn since punching lava IRL would probably suck lol
Instead of “less damage” maybe it raises def and spdef one stage if hit by a super effective move hmm idk I’d just like to see it get some love in later gens..
@@Squidgy it's such a shame it wasn't in crystal, the eggs were amazing using Pokémon you don't see often in common playthroughs, but gen 2 is still lovely.
This was the first time I'd been genuinely angry at a Pokémon game - that Clair battle made me so, so mad! I *wish* I'd have thought of Curse a lot sooner than I did - it would've saved me a lot of time at the end!

Thanks, mate! I'm building up a backlog of videos right now so that I can take some time off in early October and actually play some other games for the first time in two months!
@@Squidgy He really did! Have you done a run with Sneasel? I know you mentioned how unfortunate he is in Gen 2 because of his typing and special stat, but I'd love to see it!
Funnily enough, I had a failed run with Sneasel this time yesterday - I made a very, very major mis-play, though, and had to abandon the run at Bruno. He's one I want to get done as a matter of priority, though!

Magcargo is terrible, but it's terrible in the nicest possible way! It's such an endearing little Pokémon which I desperately want to be this solid tank which can take hit after hit, but it just keels over at the first sign of anything wet - Game Freak could do with giving it a Water-reducing ability and a bit more defense!
Their designs are top notch, I really rate them, but I just wish that they had something going for them to make them viable - maybe an ability which negates Water-type moves as they turn it all into steam because of how hot they are!
I knew this was going to be bad since MDBs Macargo RSE run was so challenging, I think he described Macargo as the only fully evolved Pokemon that's worse than its pre-evolution. But I honestly did not know that Macargo was a gen 2 Pokemon.
This run was rough, and I doubt there'll be one quite as tough for a very long time - Magcargo gaining a double weakness to Ground and Water made a LOT of battles harder. I'm not sure I'd say Magcargo was worse than Slugma, but he certainly wasn't miles better!
It's interesting how most gym battle signature moves are RNG in this game. Mud-Slap, Fury Cutter, Rollout/Metronome, Hypnosis, Dynamic-Punch, Iron Tail, and Blizzard Unless a Pokemon is particularly strong, though not particularly weak, they'll usually be able to make it through a gym battle with a few attempts.
I still remember my absolute first playthrough of pokemon silver, my first pokemon game. I didn't go with any starters, I used graveler as my main pokemon through the story. The battle with Clair is burnt inside my memory, oh my god I was there until I was lvl 60 something....
Oh, that sounds like it would be an absolute nightmare at Clair! Graveler will eventually get a run of its own (probably in several months' time) and I am not looking forward to the battle with her!

This was one of the very first challenges we did together here on the channel! I think you're right that Flamethrower would've done more! In the redo streams, we skip that step entirely by just running HP Ice instead of having random DVs, and that made the absolute world of difference to the Clair fight!
To be fair, Magcargo deserves an entire overhaul - a regional variant with a stronger typing, signature ability, and better moves would help it an awful lot!

hey man, your 7 rules don't say that you have to reset when you lose a battle but you seem to be doing that. Wouldn't that be a way to grind and level up? Great stuff though, as always!
Hey! It's become an unwritten rule, and something which really should be an eighth additional rule at this point - faint grinding would definitely help in a lot of situations, but the loss of power for Return, and losing half of your money makes it very situational, and not worth it in the lion's share of cases!
Just curious, when the hitmontop dug underground, you wasted a turn using rock slide, why didn’t you just use sunny day, to power up the flamethrower for the rest of the fight, would’ve killed Machamp easily
