I have been “loosely” learning Spanish for the past two decades. My vocab is very strong, but I am far from fluent and do not feel comfortable speaking to natives. Though familiar with Tom and his work, I stumbled upon this specific podcast by chance. Boy am I glad I did. It has completely propelled me through the plateau I’ve been stuck at for years. I chose not to turn on CC from the start and it has paid off. If anyone is in a similar situation I strongly recommend sitting through these in Spanish only and watch the video! It will help you tons with context and words you aren’t familiar with.

This is genius! Totally chanced upon this video, and as a person trying to learn Spanish, it was so easy to follow the conversation because the speed of them talking was just perfect. And thank god for subtitles too. 🙏

    • @frontenac5083
      @frontenac5083 2 года назад

Subtitles will slow you down in learning another language. Particularly subtitled translation. Subtitles in the same language that is spoken are a little better and can help, but of course if you rely too much on reading, you won’t improve your listening skills as much... In my opinion, if you’re not yet fluent in understanding a language, it’s better to understand less of what is said but to understand all of it by listening the language itself, rather that understanding all the conversation because you’re reading a translation at the same time...
But what do I know! This is only my highly unrequested opinion of the day.

Man, now I know how I sound to other native Spanish speakers, hablohispantes. I can hear that their diction and syntax is all over the place just like mine. I grew up speaking nothing but Spanish for the first few years of my life but quickly transitioned to English and completely forgot how to speak Spanish. It wasn’t until I got married that I honestly tried to get back into talking Spanish because my wife’s parents only spoke Spanish and I told myself I’d really try to communicate more with my family in my native tongue. Even so, trying to get back into having conversations entirely in Spanish is a milestone I still haven’t reached and I can hear that I sound a lot like Tom where it doesn’t sound just quite right and other people can hear that I’m not a native speaker and sometimes they switch to English for my sake but I try not to give in and keep speaking Spanish to them. It’s so odd to hear Tom speak like I must sound to other people, lol

Hello from Canada. I'm sure this is common in many parts of the world. My dad is from an English small town in Western QC and my mom is from a very French western town in Eastern QC.
I spoke French to my mom and her family and English to my dad and his side of the family.
I was told I had a french accent when I spoke english but spoke perfect french.
Then we moved to an English town in eastern Ont. I didnt speak much French in High school and lost confidence. I could understand everything (which in of itself is alot of fun because they talk shit and you can call them out) Almost like a part of my brain wasn't exercised and got lazy.
It wasn't until I got older and needed to speak French at work that I slowly got it back. But the first time i went to France they looked at me like an asshole for wrecking thier language.
I enjoy this show because I have always tried to learn Italian and Spanish. I find Italian is more relatable to French so I understand it more. But I get every other word spoken without the CC on.
I'm curious. Does the the Spanish community notice dialects like the french do?

    Hola Tom,
