    Despite being a Brit who loves all WW2 aircraft, i have to say that the Bf-109F,G & K models are my absolute favourite aircraft of all time! There is something so emotive in the engine sound (as good as a Merlin!) that makes my forearm hairs stand on end. I used to be an Aircraft technician in the British Army and though helicopters were fun, I'd have loved to have had the chance to have gotten my paws on a Gustav! What a machine - so functional, deadly and elegant. Well done Willy!!!

      +Ege Coskunsoy The same sound can be heard from the Italian WWII fighters like the Macchi M.C.202 and 205, the Reggiane Re.2005, or the Fiat G.55. This is because the Italians mass produced a licence produced DB 605 to power their already gorgeous and aerially masterful airframes. It really is a shame that nobody can hear one of those old birds running today. I hope that one day I could bring about the creation of an exact replica of at least one of those planes...

    I was an American soldier stationed in Germany for the last 1/2 of the 70s and early 80s. Met a German girl and married her. In Oct. of this year, we'll celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary!! Her grand father was a flier in WWII! He was shot down by the Russians twice!! He told me he flew transport planes, Stukas, Fiesler-Storch reconnaissance planes and a Bucker biplane. He died in 1986. In recent years, my father-in-law told me he got sent to a concentration camp toward the end of the war and that the Americans rescued him. He must have spouted off that the war was lost and the Gestapo heard about it! His whole family was excommunicated to Sonthofen, Germany. I wish I knew more about this story!

      That's an awesome story. Happy 34th wedding anniversary. I know it's a little late. I'm 34 now, and when I was in highschool one of my highschool teachers was the son of a German soldier. His dad fought on the eastern front and was captured near Berlin after his unit surrendered in 1945. The Russians executed everyone on the spot save for a few of them that knew how to work on tanks. He ended that war working on Russian T-34 tanks in Berlin. The first chance he had he escaped to the west and was brought to America. There he meet an American woman and they raised a family together. Their son taught me history in high school. I'll never forget the history I learned with him.

    Thank you very much, this being my favorite of the BF-109 variants. The G-10 was Willy Messerschmitt's attempt to get his crowning achievement back on track, especially after such negative opinion from the Luftwaffe 'experience" over the G-6 variant which so many disliked and said that it was a backward step.It still mounted a formidable armament in the MK-108, 3 cm through the propeller hub and the two,Mauser 131/13, 13 mm above the engine. Best of all was the increased power from the Daimler-Benz w water /methanol injection system. But we cannot gloss over the fact that the Tags-Flieger was doomed.

    There were different qualities of aviation fuel in Germany. Some DB605 variants needed C-3 (100 octane), most engines used B4 (87 octane). The 109s that needed C-3 had red paint on the main landing gear. So the ground crews could easily see from the distance which they needed to refuel the plane.

  • @TD402dd
    @TD402dd 9 лет назад +7

    Germany, Britain and the United States had their signature aircraft in WWII, and this was Germany's. It was a beautiful aircraft which maximized it's potential. It was small, light with a powerful fuel injected supercharged engine. The question I always had was the rear wheel being locked in place. The drag must have cut 10-15 mph from the speed, but the Spitfire had the same problem so maybe everything equaled out in the end.

    • @kubanskiloewe
      @kubanskiloewe  9 лет назад +3

      i think the sped loss of the tailwheel isn´t so high, i read about 10km/h at max speed. Sure th eF and early G models had retractable rear wheels but not completely covered like P51 or russian airplanes like Yak´s or La´s.
      The first and the last 109 with fully covered undercarriage front and rear was the K4 but it had problems with the rear cover so many were fixed again to stay out from the field mechanics. You have to imagine the K4 serviced from late autumn 44 till end of war. So it most times see wet, or snowy ground surface which spin dirt into the covers and wheel bay at start and landing and taxiing. Most german bases had grass runways and 109´s were supposed to take off on that.The groundcrews had really enough work to hold them in service than cleaning and lubricating these parts after any plane move. So perhaps they decided to fix the tailwheel outside and take care of the cover for the frontwheels which was certainly an improvement.
      But i agree, this prolonged tailwheel at the G10 disturbs much of it´s aggressive and aerodynamic look ! The K4 was more cleaner.

    • @mr_confuse
      @mr_confuse 4 месяца назад

      Another note to the ancient comment section: The retractable landing gear introduces mechanical complexity and thus an increase of resources required to assemble the plane. The added drag really wasn't worth it, which is a major reason the G10 didn't feature a at least somewhat retracted tail wheel like earlier variants.

      Despite tha fact, Germany lost world war II, they created the second part 20th century development, , with Wernher Von Braun, and the Peenemunde team inventors and engineers nobody had, at the level of Germany, as to Ferdinand Porsche, the Horten brothers Walter and Renhard, and designs as the flying wing, Stealth Fighter, nobody else as well, had...and through the paper clip operation, these scientists, not all of them, went to the US, and created second half 20th century US Superiority, regarding the rest of the world...

    @76RV The D series engines like what the G-10 and K-4 used (DB 605 D) were designed to run on C3 fuel (called 100 octane but tests show it was equal to 130 or 140 grade fuel). It was designed for higher altitudes. The g10 reached it's max speed at 7400 Meters (around 25k feet) the same height as the p51. And obviously performed well at these altitudes. I won't say one engine is better than the other because I don't think it matters honestly. both great pieces of engineering.

    And the Horten flying wing was even more advanced than the 262. It's seriously surprising that flying wings didn't really start showing up from other nations until the B2. The one good thing to come out of Nazi Germany was an incredible technological advance in so many different fields, not just aviation either.

    The BF 109 was is by far the most beautiful aircraft of them all. It defiantly is better looking than the Spitfire. I used to like the Spit better than the 109 but the 109 just grew and grew on me... I love the 109.. The G model is the best looking.

    • @hughes2397
      @hughes2397 5 лет назад

      @@UnknownPersononGoogle That's funny you said that, because I thought that very same thing! The Spitfire was known for originally executing that particular maneuver from after their first introduction. Afterwards, the 109 Pilots, and Mustang pilots started learning this maneuver, but I agree 100%, the Spitfire is the originator of that maneuver. It's such a clever, and graceful maneuver that has gotten many enemies off their 6 o'clock! Not all aircraft could pull this off, and even though the 109, and Mustang could pull it off, the Spitfire performed this maneuver the best of all.

    Wonder why they designed it with such narrow landing gear opposed to the FW 190 which has a wider span... beautiful Aircraft all the same

    • @chaosbreaker657

      From what I've heard, the Bf 109 was conceived as an interceptor and a dogfighter that follows Willy Messerschmitt's lightweight principle of aircraft building. A powerful engine available, fitted to the smallest airframe possible. This method of construction meant that the 109 was light, fast, agile, and a good rate of climb. The aircraft's landing gear was hinged at the wing roots, allowing for ease of maintenance (its wings can be removed for servicing without the need for additional equipment to support the fuselage), as well as simplification of the wing structure, since it did not have to bear the loads imposed upon take off and landing.

    • @messerschmiedt6007
      @messerschmiedt6007 4 года назад

      Because it had to fit into a train w/o detaching the landing gear. This made it very sensitive against bumps on the runway. Lots of crashes.
