    If you picked up the Samsung 2 TB hard drive or any hard drive and you have a plug-in you may need to go to disk utility select drive and then erase the new hard drive by format it as macOS extended journal and it should work find after that.

      Formatting to APFS may have some advantages over macOS extended journal (The latter is designed for platter style hard drives and the former is for flash based drives (SSDs) according to my information).

      The mini doc almost certainly blocks the WiFi signal since the antenna for that is at the bottom of the Mac mini. You might want to put the mini doc on top or use a stand to separate the two by six inches or so. That should allow enough space for the signal to get out.

    This video is very budget-oriented, which is fine for mainstream buyers of the Mac mini, but not for me. I’m the kind of Mac mini buyer who would seriously consider a more powerful machine if it were available without excess power and space usage, and who felt uncomfortable ordering just 16 gigs of RAM. I chose the 1 TB SSD in full knowledge that it was very expensive, and how easy it is to expand the Mac mini by hanging drives off the back, because I want to run large, serious pro audio/video apps, for which a larger SSD is very helpful, and I want the speed of the internal drive and the ability to run two displays plus a Thunderbolt audio interface simultaneously. With just two Thunderbolt ports, you’d need a second Thunderbolt dock just to connect two displays and a Thunderbolt interface simultaneously. Perhaps I’m an outlier, but I suggest that Mac mini buyers get as much storage and RAM as they can reasonably afford. I bought 1 TB because I believe it’s double what I need for pro apps, and I got 16 gigs because it was the max.

    • @skirata3144
      @skirata3144 3 года назад +4

      Sata is 6 Gb/s (Gigabit) so around 750 MB/s (Mega Byte) small b is always bit while capital B means Byte. Just mentioning it since it can get quite confusing if I expect a datarate that’s different by a factor of 8.

    •  3 года назад +4

      @@skirata3144 SATA hard drive is limited not a SATA BUS. This HD can write or read about 500 MB/s- 600 MB/s, but NVMe M.2 hard drives can read about 3500 MB/s and write about 2500 MB/s. It is 5 - 6 times more than classic SATA SSD HD.

    • @skirata3144
      @skirata3144 3 года назад +2

      @ NVMe drives can read up to 5000MB/s and weite up to 4400MB/s and yes they’re faster than sata drives in long continuous single operations. But those aren’t really common at all and is not a good measure of performance just look at how a system runs on a hdd vs a sata ssd, both have the about the same read and write speed but they’re significantly different experiences. That stems from the ssd having far superior latency and that doesn’t really differ between Sata ssds or NVMe ssds.

    The AGPTEK enclosure is not self powered, so it draws power for its internal drive and all the other ports from the Mac's Thunderbolt 4 / USB C port - it is basically a passive USB 3 hub. I wonder if there is any concern that the enclosure may need more power than the single USB C connection allows (also factoring in the power rating of the supplied USB C cable), depending on the number of devices plugged into the enclosure, including the internal SATA drive bay. That said, it does look cool and would be a handy addition to the M1 Mac mini if the power is sufficient.

    • @DEM94
      @DEM94 3 года назад

      No, you can't. The RAM is now part of the M1 chip (not even soldered into the motherboard, but part of the chip itself). That allows muuuuuch more efficiency in terms of speed (capacity though is the same, so maybe 16 GB is not enough for most of the people). In my case I use my Mac Mini in a Home Studio, with lots of plugins and stuff, so I'll stick with my 2018 Mac Mini with 64 GB of RAM.

    Are you getting the "disk not ejected properly" message when it goes to sleep?

    Can you help me find a portable monitor for the Mac Mini? My budget is low as $199 dollars. I'm not a fan of laptops because of the keyboard. I like a flexible set up. lol.

    There’s a “pro” version of the first dock you show, with a front type-C port, and a DP port on the back. Do you know much about that one?

    Im completely sold on this. My custom built PC is acting so wonky right now and my hard drive just crashed with the OS on it, with all my client work on there. I don't even want to imagine the price I'd have to pay to get it recovered

    A nice video and would love to see a performance review of the best hubs available - Satechi and Colori MC25 (which is in the 2020 silver color)
    - heat concerns
    - powered usb ports or not
    - clarify if the internal drive will disconnect when the Mini goes to sleep as some reviews say
    - performance of the slot and ports please
    Thanks!

      Yes, it would disconnect even when I set the Mac to not sleep. I sent the dock back, and have a 2TB external drive connected to one of the Thunderbolt ports for now.

    Great video. Thanks for sharing the information. If I’m buying this to get into the Mac ecosystem at a low price, will it connect to one of the monitors/keyboards I have around the house? How about Bluetooth keyboard/mouse? That hard drive in the drawer that I use for backing up a file?

    Don’t you want to go Thunderbolt instead of USB C for that 2TB drive?
