yes! that scene where the queen takes off her own head and puts another on a different one, holy shit, that scared that crap out of me as a kid. on the plus side, that was the first time i ever saw fairuza balk, and now i've seen all but a handful of the movies she's been in.

I was like is this how I learn bottle caps were discontinued? I guess I hadn't seen them for a while but then I looked it up and it looks like they are still made. But my memories of the video store are on the later end of it in the 2000's and we never would pay for a rental for ourselves, but one of the pharmacy chains that had a video rental section would give you free one day rentals every time you picked up a prescription with them. So I would always try to get us to go out of our way to another town to get my prescriptions as a kid and always get so excited when it would work out for us to. Its kinda charlie bucket vibes but for dvd rentals instead of chocolate haha.

The stance of Wonka as morally ambiguous was totally Gene Wilder's idea. It was his idea for the bit with the cane and the somersault. "Because after that you don't know whether to trust him."

It's a super interesting take on the character that really made him timeless!

I think Roald Dalh actually wanted the character even darker and wanted Spike Milligan in the role, who definitely had an acidic streak.
Personally (and may have been a little late for him to play a 'young' wonka) I'd have loved to see Paul Dano as Wonka think he has that weird mix of youthful fragility and wonder mixed with a lurking darkness haha

28:14 The big draw to Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is that it is much more faithful and accurate to the book whereas the original changed a lot to the point where Roald Dahl absolutely hated it.
50:30 "true art should comfort the desturbed and desturb the comfortable"

This reminded me of my friend who spent his first ever paycheck of his first job on lemon heads and sour patch kids. He ended up having to get his stomach pumped due to the acid levels of that much sour candy. His mom thought the doctors note saying he couldn't have candy was so funny she made us copies to give to his teachers so they wouldn't let him have more. for context he was 19 and we were seniors in high school.

when i watched this movie as a kid i always took the half-objects as part of wonkas eccentricity and weirdness, after hearing you guys talking and thinking on it, maybe it was his way of expressing that he's lost a side of himself? or taken further still a representation how people only see one side of things rarely willing to see or accept the other?

    Hi man,
Do you know someone who is a Podcaster?
You see... I`m taking my skills in a new direction and planning to help Podcaster fascinate their Reels/Shorts videos and retain audience in their videos.
So I was wondering if you know someone who could use my help just like I did to Café Con Podcast and Fast Break Podcast.
Thank you have a good day!

    Great video, as usual!
I probably watched this movie more than 100 times as a kid in the late 1970's, back when all you could watch was VHS tapes or 4 channels on tv lol. Gene Wilder is, and always will be, the best Willy Wonka!

The sequel book, Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator, has them go off into space and fight aliens. Really.

I have to know if you've seen the musical. If you haven't, I have to tell you the outcomes of the kids is....different. I had no idea and got to see it a few years ago and the outcome of Veruca made me shout "WHAT?!" and then cackle loudly (at a live performance!) as if I were watching a midnight cult movie. It was as insane as it was hilarious! Violet-turned-blueberry also has a very surprising result. I will warn though, that listening to the musical's version of Cheer Up, Charlie is just as interminable (at no fault of whomever is performing it, come on, we just want to get to some chocolate shenanigans.) Seriously though, if you can find a recording of it give it a watch. I'm seeing there's a bootleg put together by a youtuber, but maybe there's a legit version out there somewhere. Point being Veruca's ending is the single most shocking and entertaining thing I've seen in live musical theater and I've seen quite a few.
To the point on the original movie, the whole scene in the final office I think is top tier acting. I think they all have a valid viewpoint, but when Charlie gives back the candy and Wonka mumbles "So shines a good deed in a weary world" I gets the dust all in my eyes.
