The Original Willy Wonka - Gene Wilder Interview (2005)

On 7 June 2005, Gene Wilder spoke to ITN's Tamzin Sylvester about his new autobiography, Kiss Me Like a Stranger. As well as discussing his acclaimed performances in films including Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, The Producers, and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. He also reacted to the then-most recent adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, directed by Tim Burton and starring Johnny Depp as Wonka.
Timothée Chalamet is the latest actor to portray the mysterious king of confection. Directed by Paul King, Wonka was released in the UK on 8 December 2023.

He is very lovely,kind and humble. He had such a tragic life Im sorry for him. Gene Wilder doesnt like shows because he didn't need shows. Mr Wilder had pure talent. He was a real actor. May he rest in peace

I was once rowing a boat on the river in Guildford. When I passed a guy sitting painting. He nodded, I nodded and I thought "he looks like gene wilder .. " he looked very content painting away.
Later as I walked back through town home I passed the theater that backs out on the river i saw a poster "gene wilder in......"
Rowing a boat down a river, on a summer's day, with my beautiful best friend, enjoying life in my late teens, as we passed by gene in his later years painting happily.
It was one of those. "Everything is right in the world" moments. I didn't speak just a friendly nod of acknowledgment as we passed each other.

Oh, what a lovely story. Gene was, and still is, my favorite actor. I lived most of my life in Connecticut, and if I had ever ran into him, I probably would have died happy right then and there 😂

I think he would have liked Timothee. He liked Johnny Depp too; he just didn’t really care for Tim Burton’s style.
